Francona’s earlier comment on Spring Training (courtesy of Rob Neyer)
We’ve all fallen into it in spring training, somebody has a great spring and it’s easy to fall in love with ‘em. But I think you’ve gotta go on track record, because you just open yourself up to make mistakes. There’s so many variables in spring training, and such a small sample size, that you can really get fooled.
I am getting the impression that Wren doesn’t have much respect for his manager, although I’m probably reading too much into things…
I don’t get that impression. The one I get is Fredi attempting to pull a Cox and promote all his players… And Wren being Frank and saying “X is how I built this team”.
You guys seem to think Medlen will go 4-0 if he fills in for Hudson, and one of the kids will go 0-4, LOL. I doubt the Braves expect any more than a break-even from whoever fills that spot for a month. If that’s their thinking, then Medlen in the pen is probably the smart move.
There you go again with this short-changing Meds talk. If Meds is to be a true “long man” then it stands to reason he is the guy filling in on spot starts…. not just the clown they pull in to pitch innings 3 through 6 of a blow out. If the Braves aim is to “break even”, then Meds in the pen is not inherently the smart move.
If the Braves aim is to “break even”, then Meds in the pen is not inherently the smart move.
it is, if the team doesn’t think he will perform significantly better than another option as a starter. Given equal starter performance between Medlen and Player B, the question then becomes, “which is better: Player B starting plus Medlen’s bullpen performance, or Medlen starting plus Player C’s bullpen performance?”
Unless you think Player C is a better option than Medlen, of course. But, in that case, maybe it’s Player C who should be starting.
scoots, I agree with everything you said except I believe Medlen can also pitch 3-5 appearances out of the bullpen also and allow them to carry another reliever in April. Player C might not perform that well out of the bullpen.
Bummer about Vizcaino, however it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Hopefully we get him back around a May-ish timeframe next year. As for his pitching career, he’ll be fine. Not the shoulder at least.
So what are we looking at for the rotation? Jurrjens on opening day? Followed by Hanson, Beachy, Minor and one of the two kids? I’ve been so out of it. Was hopelessly thinking Peyton Manning was going to be the QB of my favorite NFL team. All for not. Poor Niners.
After that glowing report on David Ross by Francona and Hershiser, I guess I finally have to move Ross ahead of Eddie Perez as my all-time favorite back up catcher for the Braves.
Maybe Braves should have traded JJ when they had the chance last year at the break. He looks awful. Heck, the year looks awful already.. Hope this spring training is not a sign of things to come..
Jurrjens won’t be traded, I think it’s safe to say. Who’d want him? He’s obviously either still hurting, ot he’s worried to death about getting hurt again. Weird how he goes from consistantly 91-94 mph fastballs and locating in 2010 all the way to 86-90 fastballs and not locating a year and a half later.
