I thing fredi is being stubborn in declaring that Medlen is still bullpen material. At least give him some props for his excellent spring like we still would love him to be in the bullpen but he is pitching so well…..
If Medlen started in Hudson’s spot he would still return to the bullpen when Hudson returns. He would also be nice and stretched out if JJ or Hanson break down.

I guess they are afrad of blowing out his arm again and a planning for the future (not this year)….because he is obviously one of the best starters on the staff at this current time. He just gets people consistenly out….no matter how hard he throws. Remember a guy named, Greg Maddox. Not saying he is a duplicate, but he sure is effective without the power ball….like Maddox.

I’m torn over Medlen. By all rights he’s earned the opportunity to at least fill in for Huddy. But, we also need another reliable arm or two in the bullpen to take some of the load off of O’Ventbrel. Vizcaino could haven been one of those guys, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be healthy. That leaves Medlen. Without either Viz or Medlen in the bullpen, we’ll have the same question marks there ahead of O’Ventbrel.
coastalbrave – wasn’t sure it was necessary since the games on the radio network and some TV (plus, I am actually doing some work on my computer right now)…
Lew….All those guys you mentioned for the pen have very little experience and haven’t proven they are ready for late inning, pressure situations. Are you going to feel comfortable using them in the 7th or 8th inning of a close game? Medlen is much more proven, and provides the Braves with auchincloss better option on days when one of the big three needs a breather. They have a ton of starting pitching, especially when Huddy returns, bullpen will be much stronger with Medlen in it. It’s really not difficult to see this.
Okay, this is going to sound kind of like a downer, but I mean it in a positive way. All this angst over who is/are going to win the rotation job(s)– Minor/Medlen/Teheran/Delgado (and my personal opinion is that Medlen should get one of those slots)– is not going to matter in the long run, because (a) someone, and very possibly more than one, is going to get hurt among the trio of Jurrjens, Hanson, and Hudson, (b) even if all of them stay healthy, the Braves won’t be able to sign both Hanson and Jurrjens to long-term contracts, and (c) Hudson can’t pitch forever. So, all of these guys, assuming they continue to pitch well, will likely be in the rotation at some point. That’s a good thing, folks! Means the Braves’ prospects for starting pitchers look awfully good for the foreseeable future. Few teams can make the same kind of claim. So, let’s count our blessings and be happy that the Braves have such difficult decisions to make!
njbraves – Well, Varvaro had a 2.63 ERA last year and a very low WHIP in 24 appearances (during a pennant race) and went multiple innings quite afew times. We did not have him in the pen for most of last year.
Asencio is out of options and was lights out in winter ball and had a sub 2.0 ERA and WHIP odf 1.12 in AAA
Guerrin’s minor league stats were very good, as well and he had some experience at the ML level last year.
Moylan should add depth later in the year when they need it most.
What you need here is someone to replace Proctor, Sherrill and Linebrink – any of the aforementioned should do much better than what we had last year. They should at least manage well enoug so Fredi (hopefully) doesn’t use the Big Three with a four run lead.
And if they use Medlen in the pen, I’m seriously doubting they use him after the sixth inning – his value lies in pitching multiple innings, which he likely would not do to close a close game. What they need is to give one of the big three a night off every night and use both Venters AND Kimbrel to close games.
I have Time Warner, in NC. Does anyone have any idea what channel it may be on, here? I rather not be stuck watching an American League baseball game, on MLB Network. Damn Red Sox and Rays.
Man, I can’t wait to get back to good ol’ Georgia, so I can head to the Atlanta Braves, this upcoming season. I also gotta head back to a Gwinnett Braves game, since I don’t live too far from them.
Minor is making a statement this spring. Guess he’s saying count me in for 12-14 wins, maybe more with some run support. Nice having a lefty to rely on again. Been a while.
Just having some brain far*s, but I keep forgetting we’re set five deep in the rotation when Hudson’s back – Huddy, Hanson, Beachy, JJ, Minor. You aren’t replacing any of those guys with Medlen, though he’s plenty good enough to start and do well. So bashing Fredi and the Braves for not going with KM to start the season in the rotation isn’t that big a deal.
