Why do some people think the Orioles are just going to give up their position players to the Braves? Hello… they want to win, too and the season hasn’t even started. How would you feel if the Braves traded Bourn and Prado right now?
So, Chipper is retiring again, huh! That’s all BS, he likes getting his name in the paper and the 14M for playing a few games each year. He keeps pulling this crap but it means nothing. He’ll keep going out there even if he has to use a walker.
Wow, not good news about Chipper. I hope he can grind through the season because, as cheap as the Braves have been this off season, I’m afraid they’d just stick Terdo at 3B and drive on if Chipper retired. Wouldn’t surprise me at all in light of the Pastornicky decision.

It is H getting old and Bones Jones is trying to be honest about this. Really sounds like he needs to play part time and coach part time. Or get out while he can WALK.
I am/was a big Chipper Jones fan, but this season is nothing but a huge ego dragging down the franchise at this point. Most of these guys don’t know when to bow out gracefully.
Maybe it’s the money, maybe it’s the women, probably both. Can’t say I wouldn’t do it.
Chippy should have retired last year, move on because i don’t want to hear him crying all year, but then again i don’t watch baseball so i don’t care at all.
I have a solution for both Chipper and the team: Chipper has knee replacement surgery in both knees, OUT FOR THE SEASON, Insurance pays his salary. Chipper gets his 14 mil and two new knees and the braves have 14 mil to improve the team.
Rick, I won’t get into the name-calling that you so richly deserve. But your “evidence” of Chipper’s steroid is the fact that his body’s falling apart… Really? A 39-year-old athlete’s body falls apart, and that’s proof of steroid use?

I posted the day Chipper showed up for spring trainer he looked really soft and probably 20lbs overweight. How he convinced himself he was in top condition is beyond me. I’m 55 years old and I don’t carry that kind of goo around.
I know it’s hard to push that 4th dounut away but the man is being paid 14 million dollars of fans’ money just this year. He basically stole team money by being too lazy to prepare well.
Chipper must be really hurting to have said that..In ESPN interview last week he was talking about what he expected this year and it was all good news. I was a catcher for 9 years and I’m now in my 60’s and can hardly walk because of it. Chipper has had 5 surgerys and he to will not be able to walk in few years.
I agree with what someone else said, “Make him a Coach” and lets move on..We’ll still have Chipper and we’ll have $$$ to spend on 3rd baseman etc.

I have never been a big Chipper fan but the guy was put on the earth to play baseball. Tremendous talent and intellegence as a hitter. I just wish he could have stayed healthy the last 6-7 years.
Sad to see Chip, a sure fire dead lock first ballot HOFer, wear out. BUT, I’ve said it before; his hanging on, especially with statements like this being published, makes him seem extremely selfish. I know he wants to play, I get that. The Braves, however, have several fairly big needs and his money could come in really handy in enabling FW to fill the holes when they pop up during the year.
The way he put the team on his back time and again over his career has been fun to watch, but now it is time to help the team in a different way……say goodbye. At least, say ’see ya in the batting cage when I’m coaching the hitters’.

We’re a newspaper, I’m a beat writer. While I know Chipper is going to be a Hall of Famer, probably a first-ballot HOFer, as a reporter and not a columnist, I have to write what is factual, what we know to be true, etc. Can’t say “future Hall of Famer” as thought it’s guaranteed, etc. Not as a beat writer. In a blog, yes I can and do. Our columnists can. But not me in a straight news story for the paper (that’s what that was, though also posted on the blog page as a blog).
Busch, it ain’t cynical to think Chipper would bow out instead of playing for a losing team. Hell, that’s downright romantic compared to the truth: he. is. not. go. ing. any. where. He just let some words fall out of his mouth that he will be grumpily clarifying over the next few days.
I was really hoping that Chipper would get to 500HR, 3000 hits, and .300 average. No switchhitter did all those. Just love the guy but sadly it sounds like it’s time.
Boy we are going to be awful this year. 74-88. I still can’t believe JS sent that letter to season ticket holders and then we did NOTHING to improve the team. If I were a season ticket holder i’d be pretty irate.
I haven’t been this pessimistic about a season beginning since the late 80s. Last year was our golden chance. We may not be that close for a decade.
I don’t want Chipper to retire. Braves baseball will not be the same with out him. He has been my favorite player since his first year on the team. I know that he has to reitre at some point, I would just love to see him play in some games this year and do well.
I am at a loss for words. I knew this day was coming, but I remember Aaron, Niekro and Murphy, and put #10 right there with them. Aaron and Murphy had 10,000 people show up just to watch them hit a homerun, and if they did in the first part of the game, you were lucky to have 1,000 people in Atlanta-Fulton County at the end of the game. When you think about all the faces that have rolled through that clubhouse since Larry Wayne came into our lives, it make you feel real old. As for you haters, the world would be a better place without your sorry _sses. The next time any of you real Braves fans meet these people, ask them:
1) Explain the infield fly rule
2) What college did Bob Horner attend and what position did he play in college?
3) What major pitcher signed with the Braves, won 300 games, but never pitched for the Braves?
4) Who was the first black General Manager in MLB history?
I hope Chipper can finish the year. He deserves to be recognized and thanked for what he has meant to the Braves. He reminds me so much of Mickey Mantle. A sure Hall of Famer and he was what the Braves needed to get that first World Series Championship.
If people havent notice chipper has been hanging out with hinske way to much. he looks like he has been deer hunting all off season(totally unexpected)…. right? the hinske joke is because he has adapted his vegetarian diet…LOL… hes fat.. that is y his knee is shot, i understand you’ve had 6 million knee surgerys but you also have to take into consideration that he doesnt do anything in the offseason to prevent or avoid these issues….. so far ive seen 4 pictures of chipper and they all look like he swallowed hinske
Sorry for being honest but its the truth this man has no drive left in him, his motives are collecting a check and spending his offseason at bass pro shop and cant ferget deer hunting…..
It has been an incredible privilege to have watched Chipper’s entire career. Cooperstown is calling and so is retirement. Larry Wayne Jones .Jr is no longer an everyday player, and that coupled with the Braves mid market budget, then Chippers contract. Leaves this fan with a great deal of nostalgia knowing that the ride is almost over. God how I’m gonna miss seeing Chipper in uniform.
I do say some ridiculous things, but being concerned about chipper getting in isn’t one of them. In my opinion.
Don’t you watch these boneheads on ESPN wanting to debate the issue several times a year? Why a debate if it’s so damn definite?
I hope to heck i’m wrong. Dead wrong. But i’m not saying he’s in til he is. We got burned with Murphy thinking that way. Not this time for me. And i know. Chipper put up far better overall numbers.
It’ll be a sad day when ol’ Chip hangs it up… he’s been such a fine player and has such old school honesty. But time waits for no man, as they say. Hell, I’m 38 and am hurting today just from attempting a diving catch in a softball game yesterday… can’t imagine having to go through MLB pounding day in and day out at this “ripe” age. He’s got to be one seriously tough dude.
and please people stop being so considerate in the things that chipper has done and how sad its going to be when old number 10 isnt at the hot corner…… i like chipper but i like the braves more the fact of the matter is we are paying 14 million for hope instead of assurence… come on people open ur eyes…….
To me,it’s a sad feeling about Chipper. He has been a true Brave from day one and I know he is torn on what to do.He will handle this with class because he wants to do what’s best for the organization. He is truly a natural athlete and a hitting came as a science to him.No matter what,he was born to be a great baseball player and he took advantage of the opportunity.Best of luck,Chipper, and thanks for the memories no matter what decision you make.
Cancer to the team? Lol. C’mon, guys. Hyperbole much?
As DOB pointed out, even the old, tired, worn-out Chipper is the 3rd-best 3B in the NL. It’d be one thing if he’d just been sucking… but think about how crappy our offense was and looks to be this year; losing Chipper–even old, injured, fatigued part-time Chipper–would be pretty bad. You think The Terd is going to come up and rip it? Or whoever would play LF if Prado is moved to 3B? Y’all are dreaming.

A big reason Chipper keeps coming back is his need to please us fans. He’s a true lifetime Brave. Though I live on the west coast, I have followed Chipper his entire career. I dread the day he says those words but he also really needs to do what is best for himself and his health. LONG LIVE CHIPPER JONES!
Love the Braves… Love Chipper..he has been around a while, but sometimes itnismjust time to go…I am 20years older and believe me the pain does not get less. Blessing on you and yours…do not wait till they want to get rid of yo.
Not surprising news. Chipper has been a phenomenal talent. I hope that the HOF takes note of his drug-free career and compares his stats to his clean predecessors. Names like Bret Boone, Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa are insults to the history of the game. At least one man fought the temptation and stood for what was right.
Having said that, the Braves could use the $14M in salary to find some bats. In the mean time, let’s recognize Chipper for his acomplishments and enjoy what is likely his final season.

The Orioles need young, starting pitching, and the Braves got it !
Adam Jones in LF & Nick Markakis in RF , with Prado on third, would give our lineup some needed balance and put us back in contention for the NL East.
Look at the Orioles division. They won’t be contending for anything anytime soon.

Chipper’s in the wrong line of work.
He should have been a broadcaster. Chip Caray is 47, he looks 15.
Hey, that’s my .02. Thank you. Goodnight!

DOB,
I am at a loss for words.
A true Braves fan get 4 out of 4…

Well, all there is left to be said is this……..

Okee dokee, Dave.
