We are in harmony 90+% of the time but we do feel differently about Chipper. Obviously he has done great things over many years but my biggest issue with him has been what I perceive as some selfishness and occasional slacking.
Regardless, out of respect for you, I will not post another negative comment or shot at Chipper on this blog.
@Ty Cobb’s Soul – good one….
Crystal, Chipper’s oldest kid is the result of him knocking up a Hooter’s waitress. His first wife, a pastor’s daughter, divorced him over it. He may be able to hit a baseball, or used to, but he is NOT, and never was, a roll model, just a country hick!
It’s not fredi’s fault that Chip is getting old. Chip KNEW he was getting old, but greed got in the way. I blame fredi for everything else, but not Chip
March 12th, 20128:04 pm
“likely” is the reality….
The national media doesn’t give 2 craps about Chipper.
I’ve been saying for years now that election to the HOF won’t be any sure thing.
DOB is simply stating something none of us like to think.
I well remember when Dale Murphy was being called a future HOFer….
March 12th, 20128:05 pm
I tell ya, the way the Braves are playing I am all a tither about this season. _ seeyaChump
You’re collecting tithes for the season? Oh wait, you meant dither , okay never mind, chump.
March 12th, 20128:06 pm
You’re kind, Larry. No need to feel any such way. He has been somewhat selfish but he did help us in recent years. He wasn’t dead weight.
But clearly, if he can’t play, he needs to retire and do it now.
Hang it up Cripper – l. Bourn CF, 2. Prado LF, 3. Freeman 1B, 4.. Uggla 2B, 5. McCann C,
6. Turdo 3B, 7. J-Hey/Constanza RF, 8. Simmons SS – Use the money saved to make a big trade at the trade deadline for the position needed most for the push to the WS.
March 12th, 20128:07 pm
Wow…. great insight into Chipper’s mindset right now. Honestly as a fan I wasn’t expecting this right now, in the spring.. brings a whole new dimension to it.
March 12th, 20128:08 pm
Silver bean – do boneheads like you EVER get past anything? No kidding what he did was bad, but good grief.
Nothing against Chipper but his salary would go long way to bring in some top players and can Braves use some players.
March 12th, 20128:09 pm
There have been enough Tithes for Chump, don’t you think? Maybe I should have used the word “excited.”
Silver Bean, That must have been before my time because I had not heard that. Thanks for info. When was this?
lol, look at all us, scrambling around like something might actually be about to happen because Chipper … SAID SOMETHING … Chipper just says stuff. What, is it your first day on the planet? He ain’t going ANYWHERE. In a couple of days he’ll get two bloop singles and declare himself fit as a damn fiddle. And then rinse, repeat. He won’t leave until he has to.
I ain’t saying I blame him; he has a contract. But Chipper’s pattern is easy: come out in the press and say some great big “man of the people, tells it like it is” thing, and then turn back on it when he has to face the real possibility putting that bat (and money) down for good.
He ain’t going anywhere. He’ll “explain”/ recant/ talk out both sides of his mouth within 48 hours from now. He’s a Brave, for better or for gimp, all year.
Gimme a Break
March 12th, 20128:11 pm
Yikes. Seems like I am reading about the Braves mid-season with all the injuries. Picked the wrong year to buy a multi-game ticket package.
You people that knock Chipper and make outright abusive fun of the man turn my stomach.
I’ve kidded about him being fat but in jest.
The abuse he takes here is really pathetic and sad. Get ready for what we’re likely about to be for many a year to come. It won’t be pretty.
I’m ashamed of most of you.
March 12th, 20128:12 pm
Heck, i’m ashamed of myself!
March 12th, 20128:13 pm
Not bad, but I’d pop costannza in right full time and move Prado to 3rd. We may have trouble scoring runs so with this outfield the competition will have trouble getting anything to drop in the outfield…probably the fastest three in the league with Bourne, Heyward and Constanza!
I’d really like to see what Bourne, Costanza and Prado could do at 1-3 in the lineup, followed by Freeman, McCann, Uggla, Heyward and Simmons, perhaps.
March 12th, 20128:14 pm
Best news i’ve heard all spring, hope it comes true.
March 12th, 20128:15 pm
Come Chipper! Hang it up and free up some money! Thanks for the memories but it is time to go.
Any normal person with no miniscus in a knee knows the pain everytime they take a step. Playing baseball with bone on bone pain is doubtful. Great career. Your next step is a ceramic knee replacement. Good luck chipper. You are a true pro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 12th, 20128:16 pm
Come on Chipper that is!
look lee i suggest you do research on chipper before you start runnin your damn mouth..chipper is a kegend and will always be known as one of the greatest ball players in mlb..he actually was goin to take numerous pay cuts just to get pitchin in our organization..he wants whats best for the braves and will play hurt just to coach younger players till he feels there is someone to take his pklace at third..like i said watch your mouth when it comes to #10…
March 12th, 20128:17 pm
My bet is, Larry, if you want to watch Biff play this year you’ll have to go to Gwinnett.
March 12th, 20128:18 pm
You lost me on “Biff.”
Phil, to Chipper, bloggers are all just losers living in their parents’ basements. Forgive me if I figure the man can take it. I’m sure he is as insulated from real public opinion as any yes-man-surrounded athlete alive. Except when he ventures out here just to have his ego stroked and it doesn’t work out.
The guy can play ball – my goodness can he play ball – and we’re not likely to see his like again on one team for this many years. But his personality is often dookie. And any “straight talk” declaration – which never really is – he utters in the press is free game for ridicule because of he doesn’t stick to his word.
March 12th, 20128:19 pm
Can we retire Heyward instead?
March 12th, 20128:20 pm
Can anyone tell me when that happened? I did not hear and Silver Bean must have left.
I just wish the Chipper would go ahead and retire so that it would free up the payroll space and let them get some stability in the infield rather than yanking Prado back and forth. The whole scenario that he is creating is wreaking havoc on continuity in the lineup.
I guess you are too mad to read your post first huh jc? I agree with what I could decipher from your post. But don’t act like he’s walking away broke. How much money does one man need anyway?
but he is NOT, and never was, a roll model, just a country hick! _ Silver Bean
Roll model, really …….. And he’s a country hick …………. Good grief
March 12th, 20128:21 pm
Probably right, I hope Bethancourt moves up to AAA and is ready to step in when Big Mac goes down which is ineveable.
Biff is Constanza, Larry.
March 12th, 20128:22 pm
In some of his spring training pics he looks like a pretty good roll model to me.
I hear you, Harsh and point taken.
Let’s think for a sec what often makes the truly great so great.
Giant ego. Or i should say, giant ego is a part of it.
A giant ego is what makes Bat a great blogger, for example…ha ha he he
I wish the best for Chipper and respect any decision he makes. We owe him more than that. If he wants to continue with bad knees, pain, soreness, and back issue’s. FINE by me, because we owe him much more credit than he is getting. This is freaking CHIPPER JONES people, not some nobody or never could be. He as accomplished so much and he is still a great asset to this team and organization. I will pick on him and joke about him, but I respect him and think he is are best 3b option PERIOD…
March 12th, 20128:23 pm
Its funny how Chipper quits the roids and all of sudden his body falls apart the past few years. I really believe he was on the needle to help heal up faster. The rapid decline simply confirms it….sad.
What Chipper actually said:
“The big reason for me coming back was my teammates wanted me to come back”
What Chipper actually meant:
“The big reason for me coming back was the money”
Retire already, we don’t want your final season to end like this…
March 12th, 20128:24 pm
Chipper can PH.Defer his 13 million over the next few seasons. After this season he can join the coaching staff. Now package some of these overrated arms for some lumber. This could have a happy ending.
In some of his spring training pics he looks like a pretty good roll model to me. Harsh Marsh. Now that’s funny. True, but funny
LOL at roll model! Dear lord…
Is this a case of “show me the money?” I’m assuming that per his contract once he showed up for spring training he was due the $14 million regardless of how the year pans out. Does anybody know how that works? If he were to retire before the end of the season does he still get the money?
March 12th, 20128:25 pm
Phil, I can’t deny that giant egos have a strong, strong correlation with greatness. Not just in athletics, but in just about everything.
March 12th, 20128:26 pm
I just re-read my comments.
In one blog I put Constannza, followed by Constanza, and finally, correctly, Costanza.
We can agree I’m a poor typist!
McFann :Ô: :Ô: :ô:
I really hate to hear this. I love Chipper, and the Braves. It’s hard watching a lifetime Brave struggle.
Would someone PLEASE answer my question?

March 12th, 20128:28 pm
He will be a big detriment this year. Hopefully he will quit before the season starts so he doesn’t cost us any games.
March 12th, 20128:30 pm
Crystal – what IS your dang question? Lol
Everything Is Horrible
March 12th, 20128:31 pm
I’m sure all the self righteous losers criticizing Chipper are perfect little angels in their life but I doubt it..
and for the idiots complaining about him honoring his contract, I’m betting you do a half assed job at your work, and should just quit so your compnay can hire someone who will give it his all and not have an ego..
you know, practice what you preach..
Oh Chipper!!! You are our legacy. It would be sad and different without you!!! Maybe he can play well some this season.
Frank Wren: get Baltimore on the phone and make a deal for Adam Jones (LF) and Woodstock, GA native Nick Markakis for RF !
Do something BOLD for once and put this team back in contention !
I don’t know about all that but I just call him Biff because I’ve never bother to learn how to spell his name. I was surprised he lasted as long as he did.
March 12th, 20128:32 pm
Well sure, Rick.
Roids is why Chipper doesn’t use sunscreen. The sun bleaches the roids from his body….
I guess all those years of chasin hooters waitress finally caught with him…….
I heard…Wrenn wants to stuff him, and have Bobby Dews wheel him around on a handtruck. Really…I heard that. Think it may be true?
March 12th, 20128:34 pm
Prado on 3rd; Adam Jones in LF; and Nick Markakis in RF
I LIKE IT !
March 12th, 20128:35 pm
I want to know what year did he knock up the waitress. I had not heard that. It must have been awhile ago.
The Braves will at least 10 games behind the Phillies and maybe in 3rd place. Im just really disappointed in this franchise at this point.
“Wrenn wants to stuff him…”
Chipper ain’t that kind of switch hitter.
March 12th, 20128:36 pm
If Chipper retires to his Texas ranch that means no fewer than three Atlanta area Hooter’s restaurants will have to close and hundreds will lose their jobs.
Hang in there for one more season, Hoss. You deserve one more ring!
March 12th, 20128:37 pm
Listen to all these fair weather fans crying their woe is me song, again! Listen, this team was not and is not built around chipper. This team will win based on pitching and defesne first and wil be supported by their hitting. Remember, we have a new CF who will change things hopefully and can’t imgaine Heyward playing as terrible as he did last year. There will be some gives and takes on the offense but overall I expect them to hit good enough to contend for Division and or Wild Card.
Chipper has been great for this city and has earned the right to play as long as he desires in my opinion. We destroy players who leave for more money but don’t give them credit enough when they stay. I want Chipper to retire a Brave and if that means part time then oh well.
Go Braves! Gonna be a good season!
March 12th, 20128:38 pm
Crystal, good Lord, yeah, it was a while ago. But you never heard Chipper knocked up a Hooters girl?
By the way, Kennedy was shot, the stock market crashed, and they moved the Dodgers to L.A. You should be caught up now.
I am having a hard time not laughing at the terms being thrown out for this guy…Hero?..Role Model?…
Anyone read a paper? the guy is makin babies with waitress while his wife is trying to start a family. I guess larry was tryin harder than she was.
As soon as the steroid scandal in baseball starts Larry all of a sudden can’t stay healthy for 15 minutes?
He was juiced. Now he can’t ride the roids and he cant play.
And to think people call a baseball player an athlete? No. he has a skill, 40 year old guys with bad knees cannot do something a athlete does.
March 12th, 20128:39 pm
Chipper thank you for everything in advance,I hope that what ever you decide you will be happy. The real fans need stay by the team now this is going to be a rebuilding period with some rough seas ahead. Go Braves
Jurrjens, Heyward, Vizcaino, & Miner to the Orioles for Adam Jones & Nick Markakis
‘96 or so was the incident. Many moons ago.
March 12th, 20128:41 pm
Silver bean would cry if he knew his mom may have dated the Atlanta Falcons after maybe dating the USS Enterprise. Ease up Silver bean until you know your own family tree.
I second the motion,
I haved ben telling you about Wren for over a year now., He does not have the Braves ar heart. He is just going through the motion. He does not care about the Braves.
March 12th, 20128:42 pm
“Hang in there for one more season, Hoss. You deserve one more ring!”
Unless Chipper is traded to Texas where he can DH, he’d better appreciate the ONE
World Series championship he did participate in. Atlanta won’t be in the WS any decade soon.
Man in Black
Hank & Chipper are the 2 greatest Braves ever – and they both won a ring.
March 12th, 20128:43 pm
Trader Jack for GM.
Thank you sir, I was only 4 so that is why I didnt know. He can still be my hero because everyone makes mistakes.
Afflicted with some sort of brain-wasting disease…
March 12th, 20128:44 pm
And that goes for the rest of you maroons that are bashing Chipper. Bash your own families for keeping secrets from you.
March 12th, 20128:45 pm
You bet, Crystal. I have enough sense to have realized you were young. Unlike some.
If Frank Wren doesn’t make a trade soon to address the holes in the outfield, he needs to be let go, and Fredi should be on the same bus heading out of town !
Heyward is heading back to the minors and we are going to have a Diaz/Hinske platoon in RF !
March 12th, 20128:46 pm
Rick is a self righteous maroon..
March 12th, 20128:48 pm
It may be that the “T” man or Prado may be the 3bman on opening day. If Chipper is hobbling and hitting below the Mendoza line the end has come. He needs to be remembered for how good he was, not watching him end it badly. Maybe he would make the year as a DH in the AL, but that would not be a good way to go out. Add him to the coaching staff now and move on.

“Rick is a self righteous maroon”.
Did you mean, Mo – ron ?
Every time Chipper enters a game this season he is taking a chance on becoming
a permanent wheel chair or hospital bed candidate. Money ain’t worth a future like that. He should cancel his contract and walk away now, while he still can. The Braves should give him a few mil to do it. All great careers come to an end. His is here now.
March 12th, 20128:52 pm
Love Chipper Jones–my favorite player. Hope he can play but if not I understand. Braves should make him a coach .
I know it’s only the pre-season, but can we get an occasional “w” guys? Thanks in advance.
March 12th, 20128:53 pm
WOW WOW WOW I can’t believe this at all, but then again of course we all knew this day was coming. I hope he makes the decision at the right time and doesn’t leave the team hanging.
Some of these idiots made me cry. My roommate told be to be careful when I came in here.
March 12th, 20128:54 pm
We are facing the probability of a Diaz/Hinske platoon in RF for God’s sake !
Prado on third, and Adam Jones in LF & Nick Markakis will give us three bats in the lineup that can actually hit above .280 !
Frank Wren, come to your senses and make that trade with Baltimore !
Ty Cobb didn’t have a soul.
March 12th, 20128:55 pm
Watching Chipper run to first reminds me of my grandmother playing softball at the family reunion.
March 12th, 20128:56 pm
Enough with the wheelchair stupidity. He can get a knee replacement done and will before long.
How dumb are some of you?
March 12th, 20128:58 pm
Adam Jones? Nick Markakis?
I prefer guys that are old, slow, cheap & hit about .240 or less.
Chipper is just letting off some steam. Pencil him in for thirdbase in 2012.
As for Heyward, Fredi says he’s been tearing it up in batting practice and is ready to cut loose.
March 12th, 20128:59 pm
Can’t wait to read tomorrows headlene “CHIPPER SAYS YESTERDAY WAS MY LAST DAY”, Hope he has better luck in the Deer Stand.
Then retire so the Braves can spend that money on someone who can contribute . . . oh well, it is too late for that now!
His fat butt should have retired after last season; but there was no way he was going to turn down that guaranteed money.
