Uggla, Terdo heat up; Chipper, Freeman injury update

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – For the Braves, Monday’s 10-5 win against the Astros was like a salve after a rough opening weekend.

Dan Uggla had a home run and a double and third-base prospect Joe Terdoslavich had a pair of doubles for the Braves had seven more runs and six times as many extra-base hits as they had in their first two games  combined — a pair of losses against Detroit over the weekend.

Shortstop prospect Andrelton Simmons and center fielder Michael Bourn added RBI triples and catching prospect Christian Bethancourt had two sacrifice flies and a strong throw to cut down a base-stealer and snuff out an Astros rally in the sixth.

“Good offense all up and down the lineup,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “Lot of exciting stuff. I haven’t seen a guy throw out a runner like [Bethancourt did] that since Charles Johnson back in his heyday [with the Marlins] when he’d just shut the running game down. That was nice to see.”

The switch-hitting Terdoslavich had a double from each side and drew a bases-loaded walk, after going 2-for-2 off the bench Sunday against the Tigers. He filled in Monday for Chipper Jones, who was scratched from the trip with a sore leg.

“I call him J.T.,” Gonzalez said of Terdoslavich, whose name is pronounced Ter-DOSS-lavich. “Couple of doubles switch-hitting, made a nice play, he’s been nice to see. He really hasn’t played much third base. He played first base most of the time last year.”

McCann went 2-for-3 with a walk, and Jason Heyward had a two-run, two-out single in the opening inning to give the Braves their first lead in three spring games.

Freeman, Chipper updates

Gonzalez said Jones’ situation was not serious and that they just wanted to make sure to bring the soon-to-be-40-year-old third baseman along slowly at the beginning of camp. Gonzalez said catcher Brian McCann would also DH some early in camp to ease the workload and prevent him from getting banged up….

First baseman Freddie Freeman is scheduled to start and get two at-bats Tuesday against Washington, one week after partially dislocating his right kneecap. He hit a tape-measure homer that broke the window of a car parked beyond the right-field fence during a workout Monday back at Champion Stadium….

The Braves will start Kris Medlen against newest Nationals left-hander Gio Gonzalez, and planned Atlanta relievers include the “O’Ventbrel” trio of Eric O’Flaherty, Jonny Venters and closer Craig Kimbrel in their spring debuts.

Bourn triples over Schafer’s head

Bourn stopped by the Astros clubhouse to say hello to old friends Monday, but there were few there. Many of his old Houston teammates are gone, some traded away like he was last July

“It’s totally different now, lot of different people,” the Braves center fielder said. “But there’s still some that I know, though. I went and said what’s up to the people I know that were over here when I was.”

Then he helped beat them.

Bourn had a standup RBI triple in the fourth inning. The three-time National League stolen base leader sped to third when his hit sailed over former Braves center fielder Jordan Schafer, who was traded to Houston in the July 31 deadline-day deal for Bourn.

It was the first time Bourn and Schafer faced their former teams since the trade. Bourn was 1-for-4 and Schafer went 1-for-3 with an infield single.

Mike,

Chipper will play just 123…the exact number of games that automatically trigger his absurd, team crippling paychecks for 2013.

Chipper’s never been in it to win it…his only interest now is feeding his deer at the fan’s–and his teammates—expense.

AMEN LARRY, they had better keep Terdo around, they are going to need him and they need to keep Prado in LF full time and they don’t have anybody else To play 3rd, I know they want Terdo to play everyday but he will get lots of playing time filling in for Cripper plus he could fill in for Freeman when needed also coming off the bench as a switch hitting pinch hitter.

We picked up Joey T and his dad at the airport when he was given a Rookie of the Year award at the Braves 400 Fan Club’s dinner in Jan. Joey told us to make a sign for “Terdo” so he could find us, so we did, and he found us! I personally like “Joey T” as his name but we’ll see how it turns out. He seemed like such a nice young man. We took them to The Varsity for their first visit. We’ll be at spring training games tomorrow, Wed, Thurs and Sat and hope to see him. GO BRAVES!!

I would expect Chipper to drive to very few spring training games. He doesn’t need to earn a spot. He just needs to be ready for opening day. I’d put his games played this year at over 125. Fredi needs to give him regular days off, and keep Prado sharp at third. That also allows Diaz and Hinske to get some time in left. Play them all and keep them sharp and healthy.

Terdo needs to play every day at AAA, and get used to third again. I’d also like to see Gattis also try playing third so we have some depth there.

“Seriously, Chipper’s been at spring training what a week? Ten days? And ALREADY he’s hurt? This is a joke, right?”

Most players have to deal with nagging injuries at varying times. Given that it’s spring training, it isn’t necessary for Chipper to play every or even most days as long as he is ready for the season. The more rest he can get now, the better for the actual season.

Great, CJ feeling pain already. I’m throwing my money in the hat for about 100 games max for him. What does that come out to per game, if he’s “earning” $13 mil? He’ll get paid $130,000 per game if he makes it to 100. Awesome. Couldn’t think of another player we could find to play part time for that chump change. And of course there’s next year, when we need the money for McCann but there’s Chipper wanting to hobble around for a big paycheck.

Hey Dave, just saw Varitek’s retirement speech. Pretty emotional. I took a public speaking class with Jason at Tech. Will miss following him. Thought about Chipper and that he has been with the Braves like 10 years longer than any other current player. The Braves should put a “C” on his chest and make him captain this year. He’s due it and it would likely mean the world to him. Who else has been “captain” of the Braves and what do you think of this idea?

Mike

March 6th, 2012
12:23 am

You people are hilarious. Raleigh-seriously that was a great response. Those complaining about Chipper’s money that he may make next year talking about how it is too much the base of it is $7M. If he plays 123 games it vests at $9M. Which he would he then earns $1M for playing in 128 games(last 5 years he has averaged 126), 133, 138, and 140. That is a cut in his current salary. Those saying he is staying around for the money; as he says “Have you seen my bank account lately”. I applaud the man for making his incentives contingent upon playing the game and not performance or something like that. People worrying about McCann he has an option that will surely be picked up but do not count on him being around forever if Bethancourt is ready after next year(which seems to be the belief).

aaa

March 6th, 2012

Yeah, we know, CJ is rich, thanks to the Braves. Mike, what is your point? If it’s to say he’s a team player, ok, maybe so, but he’s also eating up salary by playing part time on a team that has a strict budget. If he’s not playing for the money, he could go into coaching or something else so that the Braves could do some things for a full time player. I’m guessing that the union contract doesn’t allow for contract restructuring, otherwise that would be a wonderful way for Jones to prove he’s playing for the love of the game and not the green. After all, he’s the one who gets to look at his bank account.

There is no way the braves will be able to afford McCann and people who think Bethancourt can replace his production as a whole are crazy. He might be better defensively but it’s not even close with the bat and will never be. It’s not like the Braves have a ton of good hitters in the organization. Removing their best from the lineup and inserting a “defensive catcher” isn’t a positive.

All of you saying Chipper is not a team player are retarded and clearly not braves fans. Joey

The truth is Ben, nobody can “guarantee” anything about what Chipper wants. I’ve been a Braves fan since the 80s, and I’ve seen Chipper get serious injuries, torn ACL (twice), and I ‘ve seen him sit on the bench for days at the time with injuries that most MLB players play with, to the point his own future HOF teammate (Smoltz) scolded him publicly – which Chipper responded to by re-inserting himself into the lineup the very same day.

So was Smoltz “retarded” too?

I doubt you know this, because it seems to me that you dont like to research before you run your mouth, but Chipper, the very one youre trying to say is “eating salary and not producing,” was in the top 5 in almost every major offensive category among third basemen, minus strike outs. So, no, he’s certainly not the Chipper Jones he used to be, but he is STILL producing better than almost every other third baseman in the league, and im sure plenty of teams would still love to have him, even in his current state. So I hate to burst your bubble, friend, but Chipper Jones is not even close to hurting this team just because he wants to sit out a PRACTICE GAME. Gimme a break
