The Braves will never be able to sign McCann, Not as long as Liberty Media owns them, Remember they bought the Braves for a tax break not to win championships.
Ralph, relax, it’s not the end of the world, that’s not suppose to happen until the end of the year, after the season is over.
1st game of the Grape Fruit.
For the record, I don’t think the Braves will resign McCann. Nor do I think they should. He will command a salary and ask for a length of contract that the Braves should not give. He will not finish his career as a catcher and the Braves have 1st base locked up for a few years (I hope) with FF.
This is about the Braves as a team and not Brian as a player and individual. That’s how I see it anyway. Maybe wrong, but that’s my position.
I love McCann and what he has done for us, but it is a decision about the welfare of the team, not him.
Fols proves my point from earlier. He lumps anyone who doesn’t live on this forum as a cave-abiding moron. How you can form such a detailed picture of people based on a few lines of text is amazing. Actually, it isn’t; it’s run-of-the-mill forum-nazi schlock. Thanks for reminding me why I don’t typically hang out on forums. OK, I was joking earlier, as I’m sure most of you know, but I cannot believe some are actually professing gloom and doom after the very first game of Spring Training. Come on, people, give the guys a chance to get their timing down. I mean, if you really think today was indicative of the rest of the season, why on earth waste your time following the Braves? When we’ve witnessed a week of 1or no hitters, I’ll start to worry. Today was not a big deal. Our pitching and defense held the Tigers to two runs. Not bad in my book.
Great blog, DOB—loved the comparison between Molina and McCann.
But as someone who has spent a little time in St. Louis, I think you underrate Molina a some. The dude is SO underrated. First of all, he absolutely shuts down the opposition’s running game.. Forget it, you just don’t run on Molina. He is, hands down, the best defesive catcher in the game.
And in the last few years, he has started to hit too.
Plus, Molina plays almost every game! Hardly ever takes a day off. He is worth every bit of $15 million/yr. And now with Albert gone, he is their leader.
So, no it did not surprise me he got that contract. What DID suprise me, though, was what they gave Rafeal Furcal.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Braves fan and love McCann. But he is sub-par defensively, and is NOT good at throwing out baserunners. And now, in this post-steroid era, the running game (or keeping it in check) is important again.
McCann, of course, will get more than $15 million when he re-signs. He would be a perfect fit for an A.L team where he could DH too. But I would hate to lose him
I was gone all day and just now caught up on David’s new blog and the 6 pages of comments; great blog btw. I was MIA off supporting my college bball team in their conference tourney in Hartford, CT. MIxxo well “my” team hasn’t done well the past few years, so I’ll take a win to the semis. Even if they win their conference tourney because they were the 4 seed and don’t have a great RPI we’d probably be in one of the new play-in games in the NCAA tourney.
see where the Braves started where they left off and that would be losing…..this team is destined to finished 3rd or 4th in their respective division, no division crown this season, no wild card (even with 2 chances now), no promise for the future (at least 2 maybe 3 years away), no hope for the fans, except for the die-hard on here, good luck, carry on…..
steals are not all that big a deal, fairly low positive correlation between team steals and team runs scored. lows of low scorong teams steal a lot of bases and lotsa high scoring teams steal few. If they were all that important there would be a direct progression in runs scored and there is not
I agree, but if a great offensive team has a great base stealer that a huge plus. We have a lineup that has the potential to be great. Speed is important on the bases. Huge difference when you can score from 1st on a double or from 2nd on a single.
Mac’s offense has been more valuable than Molina’s defense most of their careers. If Molina keeps hitting as well as 3011 then he will be more valuable, if he regresses closer to his mean he won’t
