Huh. Just read a Peter Gammons article where he talks about the Braves now having the lowest payroll in the NL East. Is that really true? Did the Marlins and Nationals jump over us? I need to do some checking/math, I guess. No matter what, though, things have sure come a long way since 1995 when the Braves had the highest payroll in the majors. Crazy baseball weekend. Glad I wasn’t around the ol’ blog… have yet to go back and read, but I’m sure Teheran and Delgado are now seen as overrated hacks by many. After their first ST appearances.
At least they make Minor look like an early Cy Young candidate.
DOB got some quotes from Ross on what happened with Teheran and Delgado. Good read and pretty much what you should expect. Both guys were getting behind (Delgado walked two I think).
Early ST, wind blowing out, young pitchers didn’t have their full arsenal of pitches and were lacking command. Fastball down the middle … crushed.
Scherzer (the Detroit starter) was a veteran and probably didn’t have to stick with the FB when behind in the count + Braves brought few ML hitters to the game. By the time Scherzer was out, so were the Braves starters. I also have a feeling that, once the Braves got down 11-0, most of the Braves were just ready to get out of Lakeland.
The only Brave pitcher that did well was Ascenio who got ahead of the hitters and set the line up down 1-2-3. Every Braves pitcher that struggled was getting behind.

I will be the first to admit he came out of the gate strong and did well… much better than I thought he would have. But, much as Teheran and Delgado’s first spring starts are not indicative of where they’ll be come April 1st, I’m guessing Minor is due for some adjustment as well.

Hi DOB,
Saw on Twitter (I don’t tweet) that you have started Dexter. Do not miss season 5. Season 6 was really weak but starting episode 3 season 5 picks up the pace and the rest of the season is awesome.
BTW … did everyone see how Houston lit up Strasburg? Astros might set the Braves with their third straight exhibition game loss. Who knows, maybe the Astros won’t be the worst team in the NL this year (based on one ST game).
Can someone tell me, how many straight games did the Generals lose to the Globetrotters? Maybe the Braves can push that streak.
Chone Figgins and Adam Dunn are really freak cases IMO, nothing really indicated before they signed there new deals that they would just fall off a cliff, at the worst they thought they would maybe climb down the mountain over the course of the contract.
Vabrave, Dunn has IMO always been 1 tool player, power. Figgins never passed the eye test, again simply my opinion. No doubt there is always a risk in any FA signing, injuries for one especially pitchers.
“…………BTW … did everyone see how Houston lit up Strasburg? Astros might set the Braves with their third

Chuckle. Made me think of the WIZARDS, sorry………..all ’round.
Man, I just read that the toddler who was found in that field after the tornadoes died… so very very sad.
When I lived at the northern edge of Tornado Alley I was always a mess when severe storms came through. Had a couple of very close calls, one that included losing part of our roof and having our garage door pushed in on top of the family truckster. My wife always wondered why I’d stay up all night, watching weather reports… I think she gets it now.
Hope everyone on the blog managed to escape the destruction.
Chone Figgins and Adam Dunn are really freak cases IMO
Really think so? They are extreme cases no doubt, but it seems to me high profile free agents bust all of the time. You end up paying for past performance and by the time these guys reach free agency they are moving towards the decline part of their careers. But just off the top of my head Barry Zito, AJ Burnett, Jayson Werth, Carl Crawford, Alfonso Soriano…Some of these guys could turn around and put together a few more valuable years, but a lot of others are just sunk cost.
Man I hope the doom and gloomers stay away today. How obnoxious, ignorant was phil yesterday. I have read some DOB responses to him and DOB is not a big fan of phil. Sad sad sad
Let’s hope the team, win or lose, gets through practice today and no one gets hurt.
Murph, I’ve tried a few things and nothing seems to correct the issue. I’m guessing it more coporate updates, I’ve had numerous issues sinces they last installed updates to my computer. Got to love coporate.
That is why I stayed away yesterday. Plus I was a little busy. Those like phil, quite frankly it would probably be better for all of us to just not comment to any of his or those like him posts. If they get no attention they will probably go away. They are not intelligent enough to know that their over the top comments just demonstrate their ignorance.
Boscan I believe has a career 606 OPS in the minor leagues, hard to believe he’s been employed by teams so long, they can’t find anyone to replace who might actually have a shot at being a mlb player at some point? Or hell what about someone who can actually help the minor league team win more haha
DOB just said Chipper’s legs are sore and that’s why he didn’t make trip and they will take it easy with him. And we’re off…if Terds keeps it going and Chipper needs rest maybe we’ll see the kid sooner than expected this year. Not looking forward to seeing Diaz in LF for any extended period of time. I know Murph is however. I see he grounded into 1 double play already.
As bad as Alfonso Soriano has been he would have actually had the 2nd highest SLG% and 2nd most homers on our 2011 roster only 1 point behind Chipper and behind Uggla in homers.
Jason Werth did smack 20 homers and had 19 stolen bases
AJ Burnett was terrible but he did give the Yankees 190 innings which would have been 2nd best on our club.
Zito, Figgins, Dunn are complete waste for sure. They didn’t do anything well or provide any positive production.
I don’t understand the disdain for Matt Diaz. The guy basically over-bulked up last year and it messed up his swing. He is a perfect guy to platoon against lefties and has had some games where he has carried a team offensively with his unorthodoxed approach.
Starters BA so far (off the top of my head, so there will be errors)
Bourn 0-3
Prado 2-6
Chipper 0-2, BB
McCann 0-2, BB
Uggla 0-3
Freeman DL
Heyward 0-3
Pastornicky 0-8 (although his double was scored an error)
Bench
Diaz 0-ST
Hinske 0-2, BB
Sutton no idea
Constanza 0-ST (one ball should have dropped for a hit but the LF was playing at little league depth)
Durango 2-3
That’s like one half of one bad game. How many games last year started with the first two times through the order going hitless?
I’m pleased though that Durango looks to unseat Constanza for the back-up OF. True CF and he’s hit the ball out of the in-field.
Just cause his numbers have declined over the past 2 season’s. Also he is a below average defender in the outfield. He might have bulked up but somehow that caused him to lose all his power. Only bright spot is he hit around 290. vs LHP
I’m going to Turner Field for the first time this summer. I’m from out of town so I need some help from the locals…What are a few fun things I have to do in Atlanta? Also, what is the best BBQ place and local brewery in ATL?
I’ve got nothing against Diaz personally, but I do think that with only 25-roster spots available I’d like to have a guy with more flexibility than someone who can only play corner OF and hit lefties decently, not great. If you are only carrying one guy like that it’s not a problem, but with Hinske already on the roster (and the far better hitter), it’s hard to justify Diaz taking another spot.
“He might have bulked up but somehow that caused him to lose all his power.”
Does anyone listen to the interview or games? Yep pretty much what happened is that he got stronger in order to hit for more power, it threw off his timing and bat speed and ultimately caused him to hit for less power.
The guy is lethal against lefties and he is a decent outfielder in left field. I expect his numbers to get better this year if they give him a decent amount of playing time.
I’m probably alone in this, but I wouldn’t bother with trying to visit a local brewery in Atlanta. We have some decent ones, but there is nothing special about actually visiting them.
As for BBQ, my personal suggestion would be to go to Daddy D’z on Memorial Drive. It’s about a mile from the stadium, and fantastic BBQ. Don’t let the shabby looking exterior turn you away….it’s really good.
Diaz also turned 34 two days ago….it seems much more likely to be that he will begin to decline in power as opposed to increasing it. He’s worth monitoring through the spring to see if the power is back, but I’m at least concerned about him.
We didn’t want to pay him 2 million to stay after the 2010 season, he went on and seen his numbers drop again, we still traded for him and now are paying him 2 million anyway.
When I stop and think about it I realize that the true target of my angst isn’t Diaz, it’s the Braves for not getting someone better than him to fill that bench role. It’s not his fault that he’s on the wrong side of 30 and declining… I’m sure he’s doing the best he can with what he has left in his baseball tank.
I am holding out some hope that he’ll be beat out for the job, but I know given his salary and history with the team that it isn’t likely. Even if Gartrell comes in and hits .500 for the spring he isn’t likely to find a roster spot.
Anyways, I’ll try not to let my anger cloud up the blog with a bunch of anti-Diaz statements all spring long. Y’all know how I feel about him and we’ll just leave it at that.
“I’m going to Turner Field for the first time this summer. I’m from out of town so I need some help from the locals…What are a few fun things I have to do in Atlanta?”
“Man I hope the doom and gloomers stay away today. How obnoxious, ignorant was phil yesterday. I have read some DOB responses to him and DOB is not a big fan of phil. Sad sad sad

“I’m going to Turner Field for the first time this summer. I’m from out of town so I need some help from the locals…What are a few fun things I have to do in Atlanta?”
I’d Go to Six Flags more often in the summer, but when its Hot as Balls outside it makes you want to stay inside or near a lake
“Oh, My! Greg Norton…That second season…We don’t need that reminder…”
Wasn’t really even Greg’s fault. That season was when I truly knew that Bobby Cox was not sane. That or the rumors of the donkey photos were true. The guy was just completely lost at the plate and Bobby played him like he was the MVP of pinch hitting.
Born in Huntsville in 1938, Mincher was 73. The 12-year major leaguer was a two-time American League All-Star (1967 & ‘69). He played from 1960-72 for the original Washington Senators, Minnesota Twins, California Angels, Seattle Pilots, Oakland Athletics, the new Washington Senators, Texas Rangers and again the Oakland Athletics.

I guess the dreams of a trade for McCutchen can be put to rest now after signing his 6 year extension… another one bites the dust.
At least we have Diaz from the Pirates…just as valuable with the unorthodox ways he carried the team offensively in games.
We might be able to trade Pastornicky or Simmons to the Pirates to get Nate McLouth. He is their power hitting right fielder with speed. Heck maybe we could even throw in Delgado or Teheran.
So far it is a pretty close race for the Braves 5th spot in the rotation. Too close to call in my humble opinion. Both have not pitched up to their potential, but the future looks bright for these two superstars.
If the Braves have a few injuries, maybe these guys could be our 4th and 5th starters.

Only bright spot is he hit around 290. vs LHP

MFin04,
I’ve got nothing against Diaz personally, but I do think that with only 25-roster spots available I’d like to have a guy with more flexibility than someone who can only play corner OF and hit lefties decently, not great.

RSpill,
I’m probably alone in this, but I wouldn’t bother with trying to visit a local brewery in Atlanta.
