I’m not sure the Braves can really afford to pay McCann more than 15 million a season. You really don’t want to invest that much into a catcher where most of the contract will be on the wrong side of 30. You want to spend the big bucks on players who can be counted on to play around 150 games or more.

George

March 3rd, 2012

I guess because MLB makes fans that are out of range to hear local radio pay them for online radio, so they stop 680 from steaming game. It does not seem fair for the fans.

Molina is a solid, all around catcher. McCann is not. I’ll give Mac the edge with his bat, but Molina is no slouch and his defense and game calling are second to none in the NL.

The Braves will never cough up more than $15 million or more for McCann; they’d be better trading him off to the AL where he can DH or play another position.

Mac won’t be giving any “hometown discounts”. Remember JD Drew & Mark Teixeira?

Mac was voted in the top three defensive catchers the last three years, his offense puts Molina’s to shame. there is no close comparison in total value

Great, thought-provoking stuff here, DOB. I have to say, you’ve pretty much convinced me right here that the Braves will have to let McCann go after 2013. An AL team would probably offer him $100m, and the Braves at that point will be trying to extend Hanson, Heyward, and others. With zero chance that the payroll is going up significantly, this is looking inevitable.

Sad to think of him leaving, but the economics of baseball fall on the just and the unjust alike.

Glad spring training has started! Go Braves!

I love McCann and wish he could be a Brave for life, but thinking about the whole ballclub going forward I think it would be a major mistake to pay what it possibly will cost to keep him. If Molina can get 15 million and Mauer can get 23 million, McCann has to be in the middle of them.

No mention of McCann leading the planet in stolen bases allowed last year, eh? How long do you think he’d last in Boston or NY when giving up mad stolen bases? We know his ego won’t allow him to be a DH at the start of a new contract.

Once again, the Braves are better off with a good defensive catcher behind the plate. Besides the Braves could make up McCann’s offense at another position for less than $18-$20M guaranteed.

However, feel free to resign his noodle arm and see where it gets ya.

great blog and great start to the grapefruit season. Ownership would be crazy not to increase payroll $5 million per year to keep McCann with all he brings to the team in addition to his silver slugger awards. That is if the BRaves brass feels McCann will be productive for the 5 years of his contract. If McCann’s going rate becomes >$20 million, the Braves will have to let him walk
