What a great story . I hope this kid keeps up the good work and makes the club , I know he a catcher now maybe try him at first base ?

Not sure that would be in the best interest for the kid Gattis as I think 1st base will be occupied for many years to come for the Braves by some guy with a #5 on the back of his jersey.

If anything I would throw him in LF as it would probably be the easiest position for him to learn given his size.

The problem with many of the young kids in the Braves organization is that many positions are locked down for a while … catcher, 1B, RF (hopefully), starters #1-5, closer, set up man, maybe SS if The Rev is “all that,” …

This is a young team.

I would love to see us carry 3 catchers on the 25 man roster. Then we could pinch hit Ross or Gaddis and still have a reserve catcher if needed. Both Ross and Gaddis are RH with power, something we need. Has he ever tried playing LF? This could help too.

That would reduce his positional value quite drastically. Providing offense at a nominally defensive position is the thing that raises the stock of someone such as Gattis.

Since the pitchers are only going 2 and 3 innings the first two starts, it doesn’t matter who starts and who relieves. Once the starters go 4+ innings, then the innings Teheran, Delgado, and Medlen get as a reliever will be diminished.

The order Jurrjens (3), Medlen/Hanson (4), Beachy (5), Minor (1), Delgao/Teheran (2)
probably works out to fix the opening season rotation.

Good morning everyone, Are you on cabravesfan?

brian

March 1st, 2012

cabravesfan – With McCann and Betancourt ahead of him, the way Gattis gets on the Braves 25 man ML roster in a FEW years is to learn LF as well. He could be LF and an emergency/3rd string catcher. Agree that no NL team will carry 3 catchers except maybe when playing an AL team and they want to use one catcher as the DH. The BRaves and Gattis will want to keep his Cattcher skills up to date to keep his value as high as it can be

cabravesfan

March 1st, 2012
1:59 pm

brian-

I understand that. That is not what the other poster was implying (or if it was, it was not how I read it). I said yesterday that I can’t imagine Gattis’ future with the Braves will be as a catcher.

Murph

That would reduce his positional value quite drastically. Providing offense at a nominally defensive position is the thing that raises the stock of someone such as Gattis.

If Gattis moves up and is equally impressive with the bat I think the conversation has to be had at some point, though… He has increased value as a catcher, sure, but if his bat continues to progress I’d imagine the team would want to find a place for him in the lineup.

From DOB’s article he strikes me as the kind of guy who wouldn’t care much if the team moved him to LF… sounds like he just wants to have fun and play some ball.

An on another note what a great asset David Ross is to this team, everything I read has some quote from him about helping the young guys. Even though he is the back up catcher you can’t put a price on having a guy like that in your clubhouse.
