Thank you. We’re fine, our house is in tact, but we didn’t get through it without a hitch.
Our beloved Lightning Tree—an oak tree just on the other side of our fence that was struck by lightning back in 2002—fell down. It was a small tree, but a great tree. The worst part of it is that a pair of Brown-Headed Nuthatches has been working hard for almost a month now making a hole to nest in. They were so much fun to watch, everyday getting deeper into the tree, poking their heads out every now and then to spit out some sawdust…
So we’re VERY thankful that we didn’t get hit as hard as so many others, but we are quite sad about the Nuthatches’ home.

Not worried about the bullpen unless they get overworked again, which can only happen if the rotation doesn’t hold up. The two go hand in glove. So I would hope for good health from our starting five which goes toward helping our bullpen to be even more effective in 2012.

• Cole Hamels isn’t the only household name in Philadelphia who’s a year away from free agency. Let’s not forget Shane Victorino. According to FanGraphs, only one center fielder in the National League was worth more wins above replacement than Victorino (5.9) last season: Matt Kemp (8.7).
So Victorino could find a healthy market next offseason if he makes it to free agency. But will he? After arriving in camp last week, he told MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki: “I don’t plan on going anywhere.”
I envisioned his agents, Seth and Sam Levinson, heading straight for the emergency room the second they read that quote. So I asked Victorino if he meant that quote the way it sounded. Was it so important to him to remain a Phillie that he’d stay at just about any price?
“What that statement was saying,” he said, “was that I’m willing to give up free agency. A lot of guys won’t. In the game of baseball, free agency is what every major league player dreams of. You want to maximize your value, and of course I do, too. But what’s important to me is, I want to be here. I love playing here. My family loves the city. I love the city. So when I made that statement, that’s what I meant.”
Has an impending free agent ever let a club know he’d take a hometown discount more clearly than that? Next thing you know, he’ll rent a billboard.

There was a tremendous amount of damage about 5 miles from where I live. My son had to drive through some of it to get home last night and he was quite shaken by what he saw.

McFann: I am glad you and your family are safe except for the tree with the bird’s nest. I was not making light of the weather last night and I apologize to you if I offended you in any way. I was just referring to cab’s comment about “weather” during the Daytona 500. The storms were very bad in Cobb County and my Daughter and her family were right in the middle of the tornado line for a few scary moments with extremely high winds, rain and hail. Everyone is safe and that is all that counts.
