LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Even as Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez was in the dugout Tuesday praising first baseman Freddie Freeman’s defense, Freeman was headed to the the clubhouse with an injured knee.

Freeman has a sublux (partial dislocation) of the right kneecap after being injured during a fielding drill near the end of Tuesday’s workout. He’s scheduled to be reevaluated by a specialist on Wednesday.
The Braves said the knee was stable after the injury, which is similar to one that Freeman had in May 2010 at Triple-A Gwinnett. He was out nearly two weeks with that injury.
Freeman hadn’t had problems with the knee since 2010 until Tuesday, when he reached to field a low throw and felt the kneecap slip out of place.
He was the 2011 National League Rookie of the Year runner-up — behind Braves closer Craig Kimbrel — after hitting .282 with 32 doubles, 21 homers and 76 RBIs.

First baseman Ernesto Mejia swung a big bat in Double-A. He's a on-roster spring training invitee. (Jason Getz photo/AJC)
Gonzalez wasn’t aware of the the injury during a post-workout interview with reporters, when he lauded Freeman and former Braves shortstop Alex Gonzalez for being the biggest reasons the team set a franchise record for fielding percentage in 2011.
In a brief conversation with a teammate after Tuesday’s workout, Freeman didn’t seem overly concerned and said he thought he could be ready to play in a week or two.
In Freeman’s absence, veteran utility man Eric Hinske and versatile journeyman Drew Sutton could get more playing time at first base along with non-roster invitee Ernesto Mejia, who hit .297 with 26 homers, a .375 on-base percentage and 99 RBIs for the Braves’ Double-A Mississippi affiliate.
The Braves don’t play their first spring-training game until Saturday and already have two infielders and a starting pitcher injured.
Backup shortstop Jack Wilson is expected to miss four to six weeks with a strained calf, which he hurt during a conditioning drill last week before reporting to spring training.
Pitcher Tommy Hanson missed the first week of camp after suffering a Grade 1 concussion in a one-car accident on his way to the opening pitchers-and-catchers workout of spring. He has eased back into limited activities the past three days.
Starting pitcher Tim Hudson is recovering from back surgery and could be out until May.
Hanson nears return
Hanson could return to full activity by Wednesday and pitch off the mound for the first time all spring on Thursday, provided he passes the ImPact concussion test. He was to take it a third time either Tuesday or Wednesday.
On his second test, Hanson’s results nearly matched the baseline test he took three years ago. He said only one of his responses failed to match the baseline results, and he thought that might have had something to do with a faulty computer mouse he was using. He was to use a different computer when he took the test the third time.
Hanson said he’s felt normal and headache-free while steadily increasing his workouts the past three days. He did a little more running and throwing on Tuesday than he did Monday.

Jack Wilson’s injury, though not headline news, is important. If Pastornicky is not ready, wasn’t Wilson supposed to be able to step in? Now our first baseman is potentially down? At the very least, an inauspicious start to the spring, for the infield anyway.

As good as FF was at saving infielders from throwing errors last year, perhaps they could strive to do better so as to not put him in those spots where he could get hurt?
That said, I would have some concern about that kneecap. The ligaments that hold it in place have now been stretched twice and those things tend to stay stretched so it is not if it will happen again but when.

Dave: I agree with your comment about “fans’. I don’t understand those that read here that aren’t fans. Sometimes it comes across as a bunch of negative idiots.
The only serious injuries to date are Wilson and Hudson. Freemen needs to visit the doctor before we know what’s happenning and all the news about Hanson is good (an effectively in the past). Wilson knows how to field, and will be okay in a few weeks. Hudson is expecting to start on the DL and miss maybe the first month.
No one is lost for the season. I do wish we had some depth but who does? Nobody has a bench of starters. Budgets and the contract rules don’t allow the stockpiling of players.

Calm down everyone. The injuries aren’t helping anything, but are hardly fatal at this point. Let FF heal properly and bring him along slowly. The bigger worry is Hudson’s injury because the Braves really need him at the top of the rotation. Experience counts. And stop the really stupid steroid and position shuffling comments. Worry more about the missing RBI bat in left field. Think!

I went to several Spring training games two years ago. It was very obvious to my untrained eyes that the J Hey kid could NOT get to low and away fast balls. I hate to hear that about Freddie, unlike the other rookie phenom I think this kid has a real chance at being special. All in all it is tough to get excited about this year. There once was a 2nd year player who had a very nice rookie year, and was hurt
in 2nd season. This 2nd year player stunk up the joint after forgetting
how to hit ,after being rushed back by people who questioned if he was injured, lazy,
overrated,a bust, and anything else negative. So now we have another 2nd year guy
who had a very nice 1st season.I hope FF doesnt be out long, and I hope he comes
back with a good year . My question is if he takes to long to come back, will he get
rushed back, and if so,what if his mechanics are messed up from getting rushed back?
Will he get the same negative treatment as the previous 2nd year guy?

For all the bodily violence that goes on in football you don’t find 12% of the players dealing with injuries before meaningful practices have taken place. And what’s with the thighs, calves, ankles, and knees of baseball players? You don’t find start-stop-start-stop tennis players falling all over the place with leg injuries. That’s because the sport itself keeps the players in shape.
There is NOTHING about the activity and movement in the game of baseball that promotes a well conditioned body. It requires faithful and rigorous training habits to keep a baseball player in top strength and in A+ condition. And I doubt most players take training seriously either in season or out of season.
It’s a subject worth writing about in-depth, but I’ve never seen a writer take it on.

Some of these comments are ridiculous.
I’m here in sunny Orlando and the Braves look good. They DO stretch, they are working hard in drills, and on the whole are serious concerning their coaching and work ethic. The chemistry is fantastic.
David Justice is adding something most coaches can’t – confidence born of the experience of a winner. He even took about 45 minutes after workouts to sign autographs and have an honest, sometimes funny, and really insightful interaction with us fans. Thing is, he listened, responded, and cared what our thoughts were. Very refreshing and I learned a lot about the story from his point of view. Truly a class act

I didn’t realize until reading this blog that this was something that Freeman has had to deal with in the past, so let’s hope that it isn’t recurring.
Is there any word about the extent of the injury in broader details at this stage, or is it still being evaluated more fluently? I suppose a partial out-of-joint kneecap is better news than a full one. 3-4 weeks rehab?

So why is Adam Jones not wearing a Braves uniform right now? Martin Prado and Mike Minor would get that deal done. Love you Prado but…Adam jones is 26, bats right-handed, hits .280+, 25 hr’s, 80+rbi, plays cf, can play left field, and is under team control until after 2013. That’s an upgrade in left field, less money, AND gives us insurance if Bourne leaves. Hell…Baltimore gets two starters out the deal…where is the downside to either side?

Hey Chipper did it. You are the reason why people say Atlanta fans suck. Your probably some fat guy and calling someone other than you names makes you feel better. I also have a feeling you were cut from the ninth grade team as well. Chipper is one the best switch hitter to EVER play the game. He will be in the Hall of Fame one day. I can’t stand so called fans that don’t like the Braves. Being critical of a player is one thing but being downright mean is another. Quit giving Braves fans a bad name and grow up.

God Dawg4Life I hope your a MSU fan because I would hate to think a GA fan thinks that guy is funny. Thats far from brilliant he’s a the problem with Braves fans. If it’s not Chipper it would be some other Brave. Chipper isn’t fat and has done so much for the team he deserves more respect than that. Ripping on our players is not what fans do. The season hasn’t started and people who have it out for Chipper are proving how sad they are and other people are accusing the team of using steroids. These are our fans? Ive been a Braves fan my entire life and criticizing play or decision making is fine but devoting what is probably most of your life to calling Chipper fat makes all of us look bad.Come on real fans lets put these guys in there place. You know in between our real lives. You can find the Chipper Hater in his Moms basement coming up with new hateful words for out future Hall of Fame 3rd baseman. You can find JJ coming up with conspiracy theory’s in his dorm room were no ones stopping by.

Gee, Skip. I suspect Frank will be calling Troy Glaus as a possible backup plan for firstbase. I remember what Troy did for us back in May 2010. I think the kid can still hit.

Hey CHIPPER JONES- You obviously never played baseball or you would know that 1b is not an easy position to play if you have never played it. Prado is no better at 3b than CHipper.
coach- The tigers are not going to trade Cabrera, especially with Fielder hitting behing him.

Braves’ fans can only fantasize about having Miguel Cabrera or Prince Fielder in their lineup. Maybe Frank Wren needs a little “stimulus” to get the fans excited about the 2012 season.

STERIODS! STERIODS! EVERYBODY’S USING THEM! IF YOU DON’T THINK IT’S TRUE THEN YOU STILL BELIEVE IN THE EASTER BUNNY! Dumbest thing you have read in awhile? You obviously aren’t very well read! Let’s say you are a salesman, and every other salesman in your area figures out a way to sell more widgets than you and they constantly out perform you and then one day another salesman tells you that all you have to do is cheat a little bit and you too can have great sales numbers like everyone else, you are telling me that you aren’t going to do what everyone else is doing? Why? Because of your ethics? Because you are afraid you’ll get caught? The MVP got caught and guess what, he got off! And come the home opener he will be allowed to hit two bombs against us. Oh….Oh….but wait, that’s just THOSE guys, NOT US right? OUR TEAM doesn’t do it, we’re too ethical and good for STERIODS! JJ and the rest who don’t believe me are IDIOTS!

Good news on Freeman so far this morning, woke with his knee feeling better, bruising and swelling not bad. He’ll play with a knee brace on from now on, hopes to not miss any time though he knows Braves will probably be cautious and keep him out at least a few games. He’s seeing a doctor now just to make sure original diagnosis of suplux in patella (partial dislocation of kneecap) was correct and nothing more is damaged. Knee is structurally sound and he was walking without crutches today (said the first time he did it in 2010, he was on crutches for a few days).
He returned to DH after one week when he hurt it in ‘10 at Triple-A, but needed nearly another week before they cleared him to play first base.

I am a BravesFan and a Steriod fan, I want them hitting the ball as far as possible, throwing it as hard as the body can allow. Just tired of all you idiots living in the dark and honestly believing that 98% of these guys juice!
Oh, and “message to BravesFan” guy, thanks for the advice, I am sure you are very familiar with pills especially since you know Freeman so well! Hahahahaha, what an idiot! “Freeman is a good kid” hahahah, “I know him on a personal level, and I can attest to his character and I know for a fact…A FACT BravesFan that he wouldn’t take steriods!” What a TOOL you are! Freeman went from benching 165…which is PATHETIC to something like over 260 in the offseason…..no steriods my FOOT!

I don’t think the Adam Jones scenarios would have been worth it. Despite the increase in HR and RBI (the latter which is also a factor of where in the lineup they hit and who is in front of them), Prado actually has a higher career OPS.

Thanks DOB for all the updates, I appreciate all the news I can get on the Braves! I can’t believe all the nay sayers on here, about how we are going to lose, even before we’ve played a single ST game. I’m looking forward to watching every game I can and showing my support. Hope you get healed quick FF and looking for you to have a fantastic season. See you in Atlanta on opening day! GO BRAVES!!

Rick, Adam Jones has never put up an .800OPS. Prado has done that 3 of the last 4 years. Why would the braves downgrade their offense even more and include a #3/4 starter?
