Hello everyone! Read the article on Chipper not using streriods, and I believe him.Didn’t commit on the one who wrote it,but it was a good honest article on Chipper. Just goes to show there are a few guys in baseball who don’t cheat their career.
Don’t know if Braun cheated, but he does have that guilty look like he did,and got away with it? Still Braun’s word against theirs, and will leave it at that?Still wonder if Braun can rebound with all the damage to his name though?Only time can tell.
Great story on “The Terd” starting 3rd base at AA,and he’s enjoying being back at 3rd base too. Switch Hitter, and He was taking ground balls during work out at 3rd base. “The Terd” will be the next 3rd baseman after Chipper, and the reports are postive one too.Looking forward to see the “TheTerd” at 3rd when that happens. Look for him at 3rd base after Chipper.Nice to have prospects.
Also good to hear about J.J.and his knee. It’s going to be interesting to see how he pitches. I expect J.J. to have a big year in rotation. Braves could use an Ace.
Soup-thick fog today at Dark Star. I can’t even see the water on Lake Bryan. But supposed to be sunny and temps in low 80s later.
Early clubhouse opening today (7:30 a.m.) because of a team meeting (they have a few of those early in camp, like all teams do, with visitors coming in to talk to the team on subjects ranging from drugs to umpires.)
We are a wing gulag down here in SoFla, cab. DOB usually knows the lay of the land in all of the MLB cities when it comes to food. Foodie DOB, what is the best wing you’ve had down here in SoFla – Dade or Broward. Also, with the games in Miami being played further south into Miami, that does change your logistics from your usual Ft. Laud. stays. You’ll score great cigars from the excellent mom-n-pop makers on Calle Ocho, but have you laid out your new, if any, plans for eating in Miami. I know you do like Cuban food, but there is way more. Lotsa great eats in Dade County, building a rep as a rising foodie destination. What say you? – MiaBchBravesFan
Real quick, because I have to get to the ballpark. I lived in Fort Lauderdale or Hollywood for 13 years. Yes, move to ballpark in Miami means I won’t be staying anymore in Fort Lauderdale area when covering Braves down there. Moving to accomodations in Miami. Downtown for at least the first couple of trips.
Wings ain’t my thing. At all. Yes, looking forward to getting some good cigars while there. No, I haven’t laid out plans for eating, nor do I ever do that in advance of a trip. I go where I’ve got time to go, you know what I mean?
Yadier Molina’s extension is great news for Brian McCann(as well as Mike Napoli, Miguel Montero and Russell Martin). Molina is turning 30 years old this season and will make 7 million. A five year extension worth 70-75 million will take him through his age 35 year old season in 2017.
Minor’s last seven starts last year – 3-1 record, 3.54 ERA in 38 IP, and four of those starts he gave up one run or less. I’ll take that from a number five starter.
I also love how on MLBTR there’s a comment from John Heyman saying Minor’s comments last week annoyed Braves people. What the hell does that mean? Depending on your definition, I’m Braves people. The concessions people at Turner are Braves people. Were they annoyed, and that was what Heyman was referring to?
I’m not an old, wise person by any stretch of the imagination. But I have been around long enough that in this media-saturated society we live in, that if I could give one piece of advise to young folks out there, it would be to READ CAREFULLY. Pay particular attention not only to the overall context, but also the specific words used. At face value, you could glance over Heyman’s comments and immediately think that Wren, Gonzalez and Schuerholz are upset with Minor. But by throwing in the very generic phrase “Braves people” he could be talking about anyone and no one at the same time.
Minor flopped last spring, and was outpitched by Delgado in September. In my opinion, Delgado is in the lead.
Well, in the opinion of Frank Wren (and he says Fredi Gonzalez and Roger McDowell), Mike Minor is in the lead. I’ve got a feeling their opinions mean considerably more in this matter.
I think McCann deserves a better contract than Yadi Molina. Personally, I start to get a little flustered when I think about McCann making 16-17 million a year 2017-2019(age 33-35). If your McCann’s agent, why in the world doesn’t he get a guarantee through 2019 after seeing what Molina got?
With all the “issues” the Braves’ project starters are having, I view the season’s project pitching line up to be pretty wide open. Pitching is so much a head game, there is no telling who will shine and who will bomb in the next six weeks.
Best indicator of who really has the best shot is looking at who still has options among those who pitch relatively well. Giving up a few gopher balls during the spring has little correlation as to how well a kid is pitching unless it is associated with a dramatic drop off is speed too.
Look to see is there is life on JJ’s fast ball in the final two weeks of the spring and if Hanson can keep from reverting back to bad habits.
I don’t think Minor’s fate will be determined in ST. With Hudson being out until May, he should be in the opening day rotation regardless. Now what he does with those April starts could determine his fate.
Minor’s last seven starts last year – 3-1 record, 3.54 ERA in 38 IP
His first start he got smacked around. In his following 14 starts he went 10-4 with a 3.79 ERA. That’s really good for a fifth starter. In his last 10 starts he went 7-3 with a 3.51 ERA.
I still have my reservations about a soft tossing polished college lefty, but he should fill in nicely as a fifth starter. And I think he easily breaks camp with the team. No way both Teheran and Delgado take the two open spots out of Spring ahead of Minor. He’d have to be hit by a Heyward bomb for that to happen.
That was the case when he was drafted, but he added a couple of mph during his stint in the minors, much the surprise of…well everyone. He now tops off around 94 but usually sits in the 91-92 range.
Lem,, I think the only way Minor is not with the club is he would have to be awful. Specifically, he would have no command of his pitches, lit up practically every outing. Appear to be over matched. And then 1 of the 2 kids just be completely lights out forcing Fredi’s hand. Do I see that happening no. I think Minor will more than hold his own.
No way both Teheran and Delgado take the two open spots out of Spring ahead of Minor.
I’m not even sure that either will take any spot. Figure four, maybe five, starts that Hudson will miss (and I’ve not looked at the schedule, so I don’t know how many fifth starts the team will need in April. Might be fewer), so I’d just as soon throw Medlen out there for those and then send him back to the pen.
I’d rather the kids get their disappointment early, get over it, and get to work. The likelihood is that the team is gonna need them for at least spot starts later on, and it would be nice if either were a little more savvy when they do get the call.
I don’t think all of his fastballs were 92-94 when he came up though he might have thrown some that hard. so is 90.9 “soft-tossing” or not?
I do think if he is healthy Minor starts the season in the big league roation
Buster Olney rated and posted AL teams early schedules. Apparently Indians have one of the easiest first part of the schedule. The Twins play the Angels in 3 series by mid May.
I’d rather the kids get their disappointment early, get over it, and get to work. The likelihood is that the team is gonna need them for at least spot starts later on, and it would be nice if either were a little more savvy when they do get the call.
That’s one way to approach it. Another way would be to let them fight it out with Minor in the majors for that month during Hudson’s absence and see who really blongs. Use Hudson’s absence as a big-stage position battle, so to speak, rather than just see which one of them can retire the most non-roster invitees at the ends of ST games.
Number of earned runs given up by Minor in his starts last year. Good start, bad start, good start, bad start… a little consistency would be nice. At least he went from giving up 5 in his bad starts to just 4… maybe this year he’ll go between 4 and 3, which would be a darned good performance for a 5th starter.
Yes, 3 runs allowed in a game is bad. 4 runs atrocious.
He averaged less than 6 IP a start, which I would like to see improved upon. But he did keep the team in there when he did pitch. Only had two “bad” games with regard to earned runs surrendered. He’ll be a fifth starter. Not the ace of the staff.

fan graphs pitch f/x has him at 90.9mph on his fastball.
I’m just spitballin’ here, but that looks like a “nearly” 91.

Minor was being clocked in the 92-93 mph range during his late season call up last year. I think he hit 94 mph a few times.

I can see if from that angle, sure. I don’t believe I’ll puff up if that’s the way it goes, LOL.
The kids could always change my mind with their performance in the spring, certainly.

Buster Olney rated and posted AL teams early schedules. Apparently Indians have one of the easiest first part of the schedule. The Twins play the Angels in 3 series by mid May.

Did anyone watch the Daytona finish last night? At least Danica was there at the end.
It’s been quite awhile since I last watched a bunch of guys pushing a broom.

DLowe will help make sure they don’t finish that easy part of the schedule above .500 at least.

Could Medlen ever change your mind about him? Hell, the kid had a 0.00 ERA and 0.429 WHIP last year. ( :

Yes, 3 runs allowed in a game is bad. 4 runs atrocious.
He averaged less than 6 IP a start, which I would like to see improved upon. But he did keep the team in there when he did pitch. Only had two “bad” games with regard to earned runs surrendered. He’ll be a fifth starter. Not the ace of the staff.

Good point, and one I hadn’t considered.

If he gets a growth spurt and 3 MPH on his heater.

I didn’t say he was atrocious, but giving up 4 when you pitch 5 isn’t going to get the job done.
Like I said, some consistency would be nice.
