LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – As he put on his uniform for the Braves’ first full-squad workout of spring training Saturday morning, Martin Prado didn’t try to play it cool and act like it was just another day.
“Oh, man, I feel like a kid,” he said. “And I think when I’m not feeling that anymore, it’s time to quit.”

The memory of their 10-20 slide out of the wild card may linger with many outside the organization, but Braves players say they’ve moved forward and that the feeling in the clubhouse is as upbeat as its been in years.
“The page is turned,” catcher Brian McCann said as he slipped into his pulled on his cap and headed toward the field for the team. “Time to strap it on.”
(Let me take a timeout here, folks. Your Crusading Everyman would like you to know that I have strapped it on, so to speak, and subsisted for 11-13 hours per day at this Dark Star baseball facility the past week on nothing but gallons of coffee, small bags of peanuts, a few energy bars and cans of Red Bull. No other nourishment at all, as there is none available in the stadium and only overpriced mediocrity at the lone restaurant on the grounds. Oh, and I have to put out cigars upon entering. OK, carry on.)
♣ Bourn’s back: The Braves will open the season with a proven, speedy leadoff hitter for the first time since Rafael Furcal left after the 2005 season. But if you think that Michael Bourn’s presence alone is going to make that much of a difference, be careful.
If the Braves don’t get more production from key cogs in their lineup than they did for much of last season, then having baseball’s best base-stealer atop the batting order isn’t going to translate to significantly more wins.
Here’s how Chipper Jones sees it:
“He’s going to give us the ability to manufacture one run,” the third baseman said before camp opened. “Where we need to improve is the multi-run innings. We’ve got to have the guys who hit .300, hit .300. We’ve got to have the guys who hit the ball out of the ballpark, hit the ball out of the ballpark. We’ve got to have the guys who do both, do both.
“Michael Bourn can set the table and steal second, and Prado can move him over and I can drive him in with less than two outs. That’s manufacturing a run. But every once in a while you need the the big three-run homer to put the nail in the coffin, and it didn’t seem like we did a lot of that last season. We got a lot of solo home runs, which is the same thing as manufacturing one run, like what Michael Bourn provides us.”
This would be a good point for me, your blogmeister, to point out that those who use the axiom “speed never slumps” are only are half-correct. Because while speed might not slump, the hitter with the speed certainly can.
To wit, Bourn hit just .254 with a .295 OBP and seven RBIs in 30 games after Aug. 25, when the Braves went 10-20 to finish the season. He did have 14 steals in 16 attempts in that span. But also had 31 strikeouts against seven walks.
“He’s going to allow us to win a lot of 3-2 ballgames,” Chipper said. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s going to be nice having him. I enjoyed the amount of easy RBI opportunities that I got when he got here [in July 31 trade from Houston], for reasons I just explained: His ability to steal bases and be on third with less than two outs.
“Where we need to get better is the multi-run inning. We need to string things together. We need to have guys that are used to hitting .280, hit .280. You know?
“And if we all do that the offense will be great.”
♣ All eyes on Pastornicky: If Tyler Pastornicky had known that most Braves position players would be reporting so early to spring training this year, I’m pretty sure he’d have scheduled his trip to Jack Wilson’s house for a week earlier.
But just so everyone knows, that the kid got here later that the rest of the projected lineup was not a big deal with anyone on the team.

Tyler Pastornicky (right) chats with Matt Diaz (left) and Braves hitting coach Greg Walker. (Jason Getz photo/AJC)
When they scheduled the Feb. 18-23, neither Pastornicky nor the veteran Wilson knew so many Braves position players would be reporting at the same time as pitchers and catchers.
Or that the Braves would have their full coaching staff, along with some minor league instructors and special assistant, in uniform and ready to put the early arrivers through unofficial workouts.
Anyway, Pastornicky, 22, reported to camp Friday morning, the actual position-player reporting date, and went through a workout with the others. The first full-squad workout wasn’t till Saturday anyway.
“Not a big deal that he wasn’t here till now,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “He didn’t have to be here till [Saturday].”
His later-than-the-other-starters arrival was not a concern among Braves officials, who were pleased Wilson had befriended him when Pastornicky spent the final day of the 2011 season with the big club. Pastornicky was called up for the finale – he didn’t get in the game – because of Alex Gonzalez’s calf injury.
Coincidentally, it’s now the kid’s backup, Wilson, who now has a calf injury. The 34-year-old strained his right calf during one of the rigorous conditioning sessions with Pastornicky on Tuesday at Wilson’s home in Camarillo, Calif.
So anyway, some of you might have wondered what sort of facilities Wilson has at his home. All we had heard was he had a full, regulation infield built in his backyard.
Turns out, he’s got a lot more than that.
“Oh, yeah, he’s got quite the setup out there,” Pastornicky said. “It’s definitely a little boy’s dream out there. His son’s got it made, that’s for sure. He’s got kind of like a little league field, but he’s also got the regulation stuff for us out there. He’s got a great setup. Weight room, everything you can possibly need.”
Said Wilson: “It’s a full infield and basically I just put a fence behind it. So we do have my son’s team practices there.
“We’ve got a weight room, batting cage, everything you could possibly need.”
Wilson, a one-time All-Star and Silver Slugger with Pittsburgh, has seen his offensive numers slide in recent years but remains a slick defender. He’s also been cited as a consummate professional by teammates with the Pirates, Mariners and Braves, who got him late last season.
He spent a lot of time working with Pastornicky and techniques and showing him specific drills that could benefit him now and in the long term. Wilson also talked to him about approach, discipline, and just generally how to conduct himself as a young player.

Chipper Jones, soon to be 40, says he feels healthier this spring than he has in years.
They spent much of the days taking infield, and Wilson had friends – baseball people he knows – come over to hit them grounders and take throws at first base.
“We had a good time and got a lot of work done,” Wilson said. “It’s good to get that kind of private setting where you can really hammer at it, where I can really watch him. I told him, fielding is like your swing, it’s kind of your DNA. There’s nothing you want to change about somebody, it’s almost like you want to enhance it.
“And the things I’ve learned in my years from infield coaches, I kind of just passed them on to him. I’d tell him, there’s things I’ll tell you that might not work for you, just do whatever works for you. There were a couple of things he took on that he really liked, that we’ll continue to work on.”
Wilson worked alongside him for three-plus days last week before the veteran strained his right calf Tuesday. He said he made sure that Pastornicky still went through their scheduled drills Wednesday, while Wilson laid on the couch with his achy leg elevated.
Pastornicky flew with Wilson, his wife Julie and their three children from California to Florida on Thursday. The kids quickly grew attached to “Uncle Tyler” in California.
“He’s a great kid,” Wilson said. “I mean, my kids absolutely love the guy. For being a 22-year-old, not being married and being an only child in his family, he’s fantastic with kids. My son loves him, he was shooting basketball in the back with him.
“I’m really excited for his opportunity going to spring training. He’s going to have a bright future ahead of him, so I’m looking forward to see how he does this spring and gett this season started.”
Braves officials and players are saying all the right things to try to limit the pressure that Pastornicky might feel as a young lineup regular with no big-league experience.
“We want him to make all the routine plays and that’s it,” Gonzalez said. “We’re not looking for him to be in the ESPN highlights or hitting home runs. We’ve got plenty of other people that can carry the club. Just let him go out there and have fun, get his feet wet, mature and be a good major leaguer for a long time.”
♣ Quote of the day: “Our culture peculiarly honors the act of blaming, which it takes as the sign of virtue and intellect.” – Lionel Trilling, literary critic and author.
♣ Academy Awards bonus: OK, since the Oscars will be presented Sunday, here are my predictions in the biggest categories — who will and who should win.
Best Actress – Will win: Viola Davis, The Help. Should win: Michelle Williams, My Week With Marilyn.

Should be a big night at Oscars for The Artist.
Best Actor – Will win: Jean Dujardin, The Artist. Should win: Dujardin. (Actually, Michael Shannon should win for his tour-de-force turn in Take Shelter, but he’s not even nominated, and neither is the movie for Best Picture.)
Best Director – Will win: Michel Hazanaivicius, The Artist. Should win: Hazaivicious.
Best Picture – Will win: The Artist. Should win: The Artist. (Well, Take Shelter should win but as I mentioned, not nominated. How the H is Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close nominated and movies such as Take Shelter, Drive, My Weekend With Marilyn, Warrior and The Ides of March are not? Lame Oscars.)
♣ OK, let’s close with a classic tune by the great Guy Clark. You can hear Ryan Bingham do a terrific cover version by clicking here.

Ryan Bingham
“DUBLIN BLUES” by Guy Clark
I wish I was in Austin
In the Chili Parlour Bar
Drinkin’ Mad Dog Margaritas
And not carin’ where you are
But here I sit in Dublin
Just rollin’ cigarettes
Holdin’ back and chokin’ back
The shakes with every breath
Forgive me all my anger
Forgive me all my faults
There’s no need to forgive me
For thinkin’ what I thought
I loved you from the git go
I’ll love you till I die
I loved you on the Spanish steps
The day you said goodbye
I am just a poor boy
Work’s my middle name
If money was a reason
I would not be the same
I’ll stand up and be counted
I’ll face up to the truth
I’ll walk away from trouble
But I can’t walk away from you
I have been to Fort Worth
I have been to Spain
I have been to proud
To come in out of the rain
I have seen the David
I’ve seen the Mona Lisa too
I have heard Doc Watson
Play Columbus Stockade Blues
Forgive me all my anger
Forgive me all my faults
There’s no need to forgive me
For thinkin’ what I thought
I loved you from the git go
I’ll love you till I die
I loved you on the Spanish steps
The day you said goodbye

It seems like Chipper has penciled himself in to the 3 hole already. If the Braves are to contend, Heyward will have to return to the form he showed before the thumb injury in 2010 and Freeman will have to at least duplicate his rookie year numbers. If that is the case, the best lineup would be:
Bourn, Prado, Heyward, Uggla, Freeman, Jones, McCann, Pastor, Pitcher. It keeps right left balance and groups the speedier guys (with wrap around). If Heyward can put up 280, 25, 100, 825 OPS with 15+ SB or better, these are numbers Chipper can no longer attain, but are needed in the 3 hole (I will not argue with those who would swap Freeman and McCann, but like this lineup better predicated on the initial assumptions.)

Josh Hamilton in 2013….
So after Hamilton had a relapse 3 weeks ago, the Rangers broke off contract talks with him. He’s going to make $13.75M this year and then become a free agent. Hamilton is a LF…
So IF Chipper retires after this year, and his $13M comes off the books, and Prado moves from LF to his more natural position of 3B, might the Braves make a serious run at Hamilton?
Maybe.
Or what if Chipper can’t stay healthy enough early in 2012 and it is obvious that he won’t play enough games to vest his 2013 option… and what if the Yu Darvish experiment is a bust in Texas, and the Rangers collapse… would they consider trading away Hamilton’s remaining 2 or 3 months in exchange for a couple of Braves pitching prospects? (The Braves hopefully making a contract extension a part of the trade deal.)
Two months of Hamilton’s 2012 contract would cost about $4.5M and its been reported that the Braves have about $4M available to spend on payroll.

If Hamilton is such a risk that Texas has no interest in resigning him, why should the Braves want him? With their overall payroll they can’t afford to pay D Lowe money or more to a guy that could flame out and be a much bigger burden than Lowe ever was — and that burden became huge last year and again this.

Tomahawkin,
According to another article on this website, the Braves earn about $200 million in revenue each year, and only barely make a profit. It also states that Liberty Media believes they have an large unrealized capital gain in owning the Braves. Which means Liberty Media reinvests its Braves revenue back into the Braves organization in the hopes that the value of the organization will grow and become worth more.
So, no I don’t think Liberty Media is cheap. I think they are unemotional investors.
And if the Braves know that they won’t be paying Chipper next year and won’t be paying Lowe $10M to play for another team next year, then they will have enough money to pay someone like Hamilton.

I’m not surprised we lost to Duke. I am, however, surprised we hung around that long.
Anyway…
1) I put $1 on Hicks making the Opening Day roster with Wilson going down.
2) Someone of Hamilton’s caliber would be an ideal pickup for LF. But like many have said, Hamilton himself has shown to be injury-prone, and we already have a few of those…
3) We’re a little thin on top OF prospects, it seems.

There is a possibility that the Braves will have some cash to spend in 2013.
2012 contracts compared to 2013 contracts:
Dan Uggla’s $13M remains the same
Chipper’s $13M could be gone or could be as low as $7M
McCann’s $11.5M becomes $12M
Hudson’s $9M remains the same, assuming they pick up his option
Bourn’s $7M comes off the books, unless they sign him to a long-term deal
Lowe’s $10 exit fee comes off the books
Everybody else will probably get an Arb increase

I am guessing that Boras is going to try and work is magic on Bourn for a bit more than 60m in a 5 yr span. Bourn for 12m a year I think is a good deal for both. However if Bourn signs with someone else for around 14-15m a year the Braves will get ripped. Bourn IMO is not worth 14-15m a year.

Sounds like we have some consensus on Bourn’s worth… don’t get me wrong, he’s a good, solid player, and defensively it’s good to see him out there. But I’m a Moneyballer on the stolen bases– I think they are hugely overrated, and that’s his big statistical asset. He doesn’t have a great OBP and isn’t a slugger, so– where’s the value? Speed, which should get you some but not the big bucks, in my opinion. (Sounds like Chipper agrees with that assessment, incidentally, based on his quotes).

Arbitration raises won’t come close to $30M, maybe $10M. Plus, Terry McGuirk has already said that the Braves are $4M underbudget this year.

Kyle, you have no idea whata beat writer’s job entails in the Internet era. Including the hours spent waiting in the clubhouse for an interview or on the field watching workouts, taking Twitpics at workouts, transcribing a lot of interviews to be used for daily stories now and features later, etc., in addition to the time spent actually writing.
But I really don’t feel the need or desire to giving you a minute-by-minute accounting of my work day down here. Suffice to say, it begins at 6:30 a.m. with me online answering questions, checking around baseball and doing research for articles before heading to the ballpark at 7:30 a.m. (Except for two days this week when I got up at 4 a.m. to write a main blog before going to the ballpark.) I have left this ballpark to go back to the condo each day for the past week between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.
If you think any portion of that day is spent doing something other than working here, then you obviously haven’t been to ESPN’s Wide World of Sports. Because there isn’t anything else we’d be doing here except working. After I get back to the condo, I generally do another hour or two online, answering questions on Twitter or on my own blog, when there are good ones.
Now enjoy your weekend, Kyle.

Correct biggest weakness is the bench. Jack Wilson is already hurt and only has defensive value. Hinske hit like 190. last season as a pinch hitter, struck out a ton and is a statue in the outfield, Diaz has lost his power and seen his OPS drop 2 season’s in a row and is a singles hitter vs LHP.

This would be a good point for me, your blogmeister, to point out that those who use the axiom “speed never slumps” are only are half-correct. Because while speed might not slump, the hitter with the speed certainly can.
>>>>>>>>>
Pretty much correct. Doesn’t do the team any good when your lead off hitter can’t get on base. Nobody can steal first. Bourn should rectify our lack of lead off ability in recent years.

The communications processors I worked on back in 1979 with NCR-Comten were as large as a couple of fridge’s strapped together. The earlier systems had 64K of memory spread over 10 memory boards. I repaired to the chip level back in those days. Probably had 20-30 memory chips to account for that 64K of memory.

Some old favorites like Europe are back and got much heavier and harder and less pop – they’ve put out some good stuff the past several years.
George Lynch is playing with Lizzy Borden and Dokken went and got heavier, too, though Don Dokken will always be a pop star at heart.
Molly Hatchet still puts out some good saouthern rock every year or two, as well..

Braves talk a good game, but it is played on the field. this lefty stacked lineup is no match for any decent lefthander.
by July, the fans will know that a playoff spot is wishful thinking.

If you like Nightwish and melodic metal, check out the Limb Records site – a German company that deals exclusively with the genre and does some great, slick recording and packagig of their bands with exceptional liner notes and design. I think the Braves will not resign Bourn. The number of years will be the main reason I would not want to resign him. I do not think signing Bourn for 6 years would be a good use of the Braves limited funds.
I hate to say it but I think the Braves should try to sign Victorino for 3/$39M next year. Would Victorino sign for that? If not the other option might be to try and trade for Bourjos from the Angels. Bourjos had OPS last year, his 2nd season of .327, and an OPS of .765.
Victorino would give the Braves time to develop their own CFer, or Bourjos would be around for 4 or 5 years.

From what I read about Terdoslavish is that he is projected as a 1B/DH type and that he’s seen more as a Bench player. Here is the paragraph.
Terdo is the great hope many Braves fans have, due to his solid numbers, seemingly out of nowhere. However, defensively he profiles as not being able to stick anywhere other than 1B or DH. At this point, his bat doesn’t profile as being at the level necessary for a MLB 1B or DH, though he could be an okay bench bat or part time DH in the AL. But, he could pile on another year of solid offensive growth and surprise us by becoming an average MLB 1B bat. Certainly doesn’t seem to have the athleticism, defensive reflexes or arm to play a MLB 3rd base though, which many Braves fans seem to be hoping he will play as the heir apparent to Chipper at 3rd. He seems to sit in an awkward area of bat not good enough for 1B and glove not good enough for 3B. (FJR)
Also Keith Law on multiple chats has called Terdo a player getting too much hype and is just a extra guy to him.

Also about Andrelton Simmons I asked Keith Law on Facebook if a good comparison for him is Omar Vizquel (ceiling) and Jack Wilson (Floor)…. He said I was too optimistic and that those are too high. So the floor is most likely a Rey Ordonez type Shortstop. All Glove no bat type.

I know today was first day, but Terdoslavich looked very comfortable and at home at his old position at 3rd base. Bobbled only one chance and made very strong and accurate throws on all chances to 1st. Chipper made a high throw that sailed into the stands and hit an elderly man in the stomach. Man was fine as Hinske checked in on him and said 1st day Chipper has no clue where the ball is going. Funny stuff

Keith Law is a straight shooter. He tells you his true opinion regardless if your a big fan of the prospect or not. His beef with the Braves is how they been drafting the past few years. We have been taking players will low ceilings, guys who have a great shot to be major league players but max out as average players. Also our system doesn’t have any really good hitting prospects. We have tons of pitching and speed and defense. All of our positional players prospects question marks center around offense.
I really value his opinion and he’s right most of the time. He’s the Mel Kiper Jr. of baseball.

How do you think I get back and forth from condo every day, monorail? I have a rental car for the entire 47-day stay. But to get to the car in the parking long outside ballpark, drive to a restaurant (through what is usually heavy Disney-area traffic) and get something to eat in middle of the day would take more than an hour. Can’t just leave the ballpark for an hour in the middle of the day while workout is going on, and have to write once we get back up to pressbox after workout and post-workout interviews.

Terdoslavich did stand out during AFL play. That often bodes well. It is worth noting, however, that his performance in Arizona was way out of line with what he had done to that point
Terdoslavich did reasonably well at the high A level at age 22. That’s nice, but it’s a long way from the big leagues. He also struck out 2 and a half times as often as he walked – at high A-ball.
Lastly, though the nickname may seem a natural, when I think turds and the Atlanta Braves, noone but Bobby Cox will ever come to mind

Bourn can help the Braves win alot of 3-2 games? That’s providing the Braves can score the other 2 runs. With this lineup that may be asking to much. As for Bourn, where was he when the Braves needed him most last season. Maybe its because there was no pressure to perform in Houston and when the spotlight came on in Atlanta he had a case of stage fright.

i have been a die hard fan since the 80s. I collected all the ball cards, I listened to WSB everynight, etc. Being 52 yrs old and watching (or listening when they were not on TV) the Braves for a long time I just dont think they are putting a complete product on the field because they dont want to spend the money to compete. There is no way the Braves can compete with the Phillies with the pieces they have now. Maybe you are younger, but I have been around awhile and cant stand mediocre, and that is what the Braves have become. I will always be a Braves fan, but a diehard? Not until they spend the money and put a complete team that can compete. I live 150 miles from the stadium and I attended over 10 games last year. Not this year. Have a good day.

Braves at least will look sharp in their unis – classic whites and grays are top notch. I actually love the road alternate navy especially the totally navy hat (if anyone can find that alternate hat without a Medlen 5950 straight bill please let me know). New off white jerseys are very, very nice. Now spring training – love the BP jerseys and hat

It’s nine o’clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There’s an old man sitting next to me
Makin’ love to his tonic and gin
He says, “Son, can you play me a memory
I’m not really sure how it goes
But it’s sad and it’s sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man’s clothes.”
la la la, di da da
La la, di di da da dum
Chorus:
Sing us a song, you’re the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we’re all in the mood for a melody
And you’ve got us all feelin’ alright
Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he’s quick with a joke or to light up your smoke ****
But there’s some place that he’d rather be
He says, “Bill, I believe this is killing me.”
As his smile ran away from his face
“Well I’m sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place”
Oh, la la la, di da da
La la, di da da da dum
Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he’s talkin’ with Davy, who’s still in the Navy
And probably will be for life
And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessman slowly gets stoned
Yes, they’re sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it’s better than drinkin’ alone
Chorus
sing us a song you’re the piano man
sing us a song tonight
well we’re all in the mood for a melody
and you got us all feeling alright
It’s a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
‘Cause he knows that it’s me they’ve been comin’ to see
To forget about their life for a while
And the piano, it sounds like a carnival ****
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say, “Man, what are you doin’ here?”
Oh, la la la, di da da
La la, di da da da dum
Chorus:
sing us a song you’re the piano man
sing us a song tonight
well we’re all in the mood for a melody
and you got us all feeling alright

hard to imagine how anybody who loves music can say that song is trash. It absolutely nails the small time music business and especially small bars whether piano or not. Well, summer is supposed to start in three months. But considering it was in the 60s most of “winter” in Atlanta (70 when I left) and it was 86 here in Orlando on Friday, you probably won’t have to wait three months. Maybe closer to three weeks.

I believe this relationship Pastornicky has developed with Wilson will only be beneficial for him going forward. It seems like the kid has his head on straight, and for that matter most of the young Braves players (Heyward, Freeman, the pitchers) This is a tribute to the leadership of the players, manager, and organization. Not only developing baseball players, but good, genuine people.
I live in the Philadelphia area and have been calling in to 97.5 the Phanatic Radio show here and there bantering with these crazies up here. They believe the Marlins are the biggest challenge and the NL EAST has already been won. I cannot wait for the season to unfold because this Braves team has a unique bond and that can go a long way in a 162 game baseball season.

Parra’s a nice little player. Parra is viewed as a everyday player and is in a weird situation right now. I have zero clue why the DBacks signed Jason Kubel, makes no sense. With an outfield of Parra, Young, Upton its one of the best defensive outfields in baseball. I’m sure he could be a solid CFer, gold glover in LF and looks like a guy who could have 15 Homer 25 stolen base potential.

DOB, looks like the Lerners have decided it is finally time to pull out the check book and spend some of those millions they have made. A lot of National fans have been waiting for this time to come. I’m not sure Zimmerman is worth it but he is to the Nationals what Chipper Jones is to the Braves.
Still believe the Nats need a bit more pitching depth in their bullpen to overtake the Phillies but they have a pretty strong core of position players now, I would not be surprised to see them make a strong run at Bourn next year. They don’t seem to have any spending constraints any longer.

From NY Times story about Ryan Braun case. (Anyone who doesn’t think he used simply isn’t looking at facts and is only saying what they wish were the case.)
This was not a violation of protocol but rather the preferred approach, according to Travis T. Tygart, the chief executive of the United States Anti-Doping Agency. Any baseball player should prefer to have his sample in the custody of a trained professional — one agreed to by his union — than to have it sitting abandoned in some FedEx facility over the weekend, Tygart said. That way, the urine collector can be cross-examined about the chain of custody: What was the temperature of the basement? Did anyone else come into contact with the sample?
Lawyers for Major League Baseball argued there was no evidence that Braun’s sealed sample was tampered with before it reached a Montreal laboratory. And Braun apparently did not prove tampering had occurred. Nor, apparently, did he argue that the sample did not belong to him. Braun also did not challenge the science behind the positive test, Tygart said. Could the sample have degraded over the 48 hours in question to produce a false positive? “To say it degraded and created synthetic testosterone is contrary to logic and science,” Tygart said.
He added: “For synthetic testosterone to be in the urine, it had to come out of the body into the collection cup. Nothing voided would cause synthetic testosterone to magically appear in a urine sample. They never tried to argue that at all.”

I got a good question for older people who know laws and such better than me, im only 24. What’s the difference between killing a baby or an adult or hell even a dog in this country? I guess you’d have to kill a whole bus load of kids to get life? Or does that still not equal killing a police officer? Or I guess armed robbery is a worse crime than killing a baby? Cause I’ve seen people get more than 7 years? I know someone who just knocked out a pizza delivery guy and stole his car and got 12 years…. Or how about if a cop illegally finds cold hard evidence that someone killed someone but its get thrown out and the killer is let go? What in the world is going on? Super lack of common sense.. She shook her baby to death. But the whole sentencing in this country is a joke. I don’t understand it. How can robbery or gta land you more time than killing? I’ve seen normal people get in trouble over dog fighting and such and get around 5 years, but you can shake a baby and only get 2 more years.

http://baseballinstinct.com/2012/02/07/prospect-instinct-2012-tyler-pastornicky-ss-atlanta-braves/
This offseason, the Braves did not offer Alex Gonzalez arbitration and now have an opening at the shortstop position for the 2012 season. Jack Wilson was re-signed but he will primarily be used as a backup utility and defensive replacement. In December 2011, manager Fredi Gonzalez sent Tyler Pastornicky an early Christmas present when he announced that they will go in-house to fill the shortstop position. Of course, things can still change but we think that Pastornicky is the right guy and right move. So who is this guy? We will be looking at him in more detail today.
Tyler Pastornicky was a fifth round pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2008 MLB draft out of Pendleton High School in Bradenton, Florida. He spent two seasons in the Blue Jays’ Rookie and Single-A level before the Braves acquired him with Alex Gonzalez and Tim Collins for Yunel Escobar and Jo-Jo Reyes in July 2010. The Braves really liked what they saw in Pastornicky: a good athlete, a hard worker and a player who hustles down the line. They also saw a young guy with who could hit, which has worked out for the Braves. We have covered Pastornicky in the past with David Reiffer’s Southern League Top Prospects – Hitters article. He also appeared at #6 in my coverage on the Atlanta Braves’ 2012 Top 10 Prospects and came in at #188° on our Baseball Instinct 360°.
The Braves are fairly aggressive with prospects they like and Pastornicky is someone they believe in. After the trade, they aggressively moved the 20-year old to AA Mississippi (Southern League) where he was not quite ready for the challenge. After the 2010 season, the Braves wanted to see more from their newest addition and sent him to the Arizona Fall League, where he played well and was selected to the 2010 AFL Rising Stars game. Something must have clicked for him as Pastornicky’s batting average has not looked back since.
In 2011, Pastornicky started in AA Mississippi again. Same story, same level, but much different results. This time, Pastornicky showed more consistency. His bat was more polished and he no longer struggled to hit against more advanced pitchers. In 2011, he hit .299/.345/.414 with a .115 ISO in the Southern League, was selected to the Southern League All-Star Game by his peers, and then followed that with a scorching hot finale for AAA Gwinnett (International League). He tagged AAA pitchersfor a .365/.407/.413 slash line before a high ankle sprain ended his 2011 season.
The Bat
Going into last year, Tyler Pastornicky never had a batting average above .270 despite a solid walk-to-strikeout ratio. His goal in the offseason after 2010 was to drive the ball more consistently and he undoubtedly achieved his objective. In the 2011 season, he hit .314/.359/.414, with 15 doubles, 5 triples, and 7 HRs, and he stole 27 bases in 38 attempts overall. Although Pastornicky’s .314 batting average was fueled by a .315 BABIP in the Southern League and an even higher.398 BABIP in the International League, he was certainly more consistent making contact with the ball. He’s a player that has a strong work ethic and hustles on and off the field. His hard work is clearly evident just by looking at his 2011 offensive line.
Pastornicky has a good feel for hitting, a polished bat, and a compact, level swing that generates a great deal of groundballs and line drives (53% and 25% in AAA), which partially triggered his high BABIP. His plus speed also allows him to run out infield hits. Power, on the other hand, is almost non-existent. Pastornicky does not have a lot of strength and his swing is fairly level and flat (both unpromising), so he will not be a deep HR threat. He will need to work on driving the ball with more authority in the big leagues. He did however take a Kenley Jansen hanging breaking ball deep and then hit for the cycle in July 2011.
In addition to a good feel for hitting, Pastornicky has a good approach at the plate. He’s had a fairly even walk-to-strikeout ratio at every stop so he has good strike zone judgment. This year, as his contact rate climbed, his individual walk rate and strikeout rate both dropped at an even pace. Strikeouts should be rare for Pastornicky as his K% has declined from 14.8% to 9.4% after he was traded to the Braves. He has the contact skills, plus speed, and instincts to develop into a solid top of the lineup hitter, but he will need to get on base more and continue to put the ball in play. He definitely has the patience and plate discipline as he’s had walk rates north of 10% in the past three years.
The Glove
Defensively, Tyler Pastornicky has some huge shoes to fill. After a year and a half of Alex Gonzalez, Braves’ fans are used to his smooth, natural range and glove. Dreams of winning a Gold Glove will not happen but Tyler Pastornicky has sound defensive fundamentals. For starters, he has major league bloodlines; his father is former third basemen, Cliff Pastornicky, who played 10 games for the Kansas City Royals filling in for an injured George Brett in 1983. Tyler Pastornicky is also athletic and agile and his speed makes him a slick fielder with superb range. With soft hands, quick footwork, and good baseball instincts, we have no questions that he can handle shortstop. The only issue is that his arm strength is just average at best.
In the four seasons Pastornicky has played since being drafted, he committed only 75 errors in 1,628 balls hit towards his direction – a .954 fielding percentage. Pastornicky’s career minor league fielding percentage won’t stand next to Alex Gonzalez’s .979 with the 2011 Braves, but a .950+ fielding percentage is also nothing to sneeze at. In fact, the 2011 season was Pastornicky’s worst fielding year (.942), but we believe he will hold his own playing short, at least adequate enough until potential Gold Glove prospect Andrelton Simmons is ready. There’s a very good chance that Pastornicky will be a better fit playing second base because of his average arm. He won’t be flashy like Gonzalez but his glove should be ready for shortstop this year.
Our Instinct
All eyes in the Braves’ camp will focus on Tyler Pastornicky this March. Braves management will take a real look at Pastornicky during Spring Training. He has good contact skills and a solid approach at the plate. No tool stands out but he’s a jack-of-all-trade shortstop player who consistently hits line drives, hustles hard on the field, takes a walk, and is an adequate defender. We do not think he’s the Braves’ long term solution at shortstop but he will be sufficient. Second base may be more realistic.
Pastornicky also has very acute baseball instincts to pinpoint his weaknesses. He utilized every offseason to improve areas in his game that need help. Last offseason, he worked on consistency and making contact. This offseason, after his ankle sprain was healed, he bulked up 10-11 lbs, adding strength and more speed to his game. It’s a good sign of his work ethic but how will that translate next year? The strength may help him drive the ball with more authority but we’re still not sure he’s going to be a huge offensive force for the Braves. Neither is he flashy with the leather but we consider him a “safe” shortstop prospect with an attainable floor.

…in 1974, 25-year-old Bruce Springsteen played at the Harvard Square Theater in Cambridge. Although popular with the college crowd in the Northeast, Springsteen was not yet a star. That night, he and the E Street Band opened for Bonnie Raitt. The influential music critic Jon Landau was in the audience. Overwhelmed by what he heard, Landau wrote, “I saw my rock and roll past flash before my eyes. I saw something else: I saw rock and roll’s future and its name is Bruce Springsteen.”

Whether Bourn returns next season depends on who owns the Braves, If Liberty Media decides to sell the Braves, Which they might do then Bourn will be signed to a multi yr contract along with other needs that FW thinks the Braves need to compete with the Phillies and Marlins, New owners will change the way FW does business by allowing him to make changes that are not possible with present ownership, Lets hope Liberty Media does the right thing and sells the Braves.

Webster,
I’m in West Chester area…the hosts of a few of the shows are Mike Missinelli, Jonny Marks, Sean Brace, Phil from Mt Airy, Baldy and Mais to name a few. I’ve called in a few times when they were discussing the upcoming baseball season. The points I have made I feel hold much value. What the Phillies have on the Braves last year and I believe going into this year is the consistency in quality starting pitching. The Braves starters are quality as well, but do not go as deep into games as the Phillies studs do. We saw what effect this had on the bullpen, which I would take the Braves pen over any pen in MLB right now. I do believe this Braves line up is much more dynamic and has a greater potential to be effective throughout the entire season in comparison to the Phillies. It’s those nasty starters that allow them to maybe stay ahead of the Braves again this year, but that gap is much closer than these arrogant, obnoxious Philadelphians think. They are already assuming the NL East crown is won. And I do not think that is remotely close to the truth this year as the Braves have in my opinion a beautiful mixture of veterans and rookies/2nd year/3rd year players.
Needless to say, my expectations are high. That goes for you too, DOB.

I am serious. THe Braves need an ace to lead their rotation. THe runs are a given that we will need. I am banking on the fact that people will return from career worst years. No way can that happen 2 years in a row.
Pitching, as always will be key. We burned up our dominant bullpen due to young starters that did not go deep in the game. Hanson can be one of the most dominant pitchers in the game. We need Hanson to take over #1 with Huddy #2.
As far as how long Hanson will be with us….It depends on how he develops and the development of our young pitchers, especially the big 3. Way to early to declare outright that Hanson will not be here in 2 years

I don’t think Bourjos is to that level yet, Right now he’s mainly known for his top tier center field defense. At the plate he’s only a 253/303/423 career hitter so far. With an Effective Running Game, The Bourne Identity can steal 60+bases. J-Hey can steal 20 and Martini can steal a dozen…
Its on Bobby Lite (Fredi) to enforce that…The Roid era is over the team needs to stop relying on Ugg, B-Macc and Chipper to hit the 3 run homers…Especially for the fact the Ugg K’s too much and B-Macc and Chipper will only be in 135 games apiece, respectively…

I hear the train a comin’
It’s rollin’ ’round the bend,
And I ain’t seen the sunshine,
Since, I don’t know when,
I’m stuck in Folsom Prison,
And time keeps draggin’ on,
But that train keeps a-rollin’,
On down to San Antone.
When I was just a baby,
My Mama told me, “Son,
Always be a good boy,
Don’t ever play with guns,”
But I shot a man in Reno,
Just to watch him die,
When I hear that whistle blowin’,
I hang my head and cry.
I bet there’s rich folks eatin’,
In a fancy dining car,
They’re probably drinkin’ coffee,
And smokin’ big cigars,
But I know I had it comin’,
I know I can’t be free,
But those people keep a-movin’,
And that’s what tortures me.
Well, if they freed me from this prison,
If that railroad train was mine,
I bet I’d move out over a little,
Farther down the line,
Far from Folsom Prison,
That’s where I want to stay,
And I’d let that lonesome whistle,
Blow my Blues away.
The Man in Black woulda been 80 today! RIP!

I would also be happy with some quality at bats unlike those we got from Gonzo last year. Before I call it a night! DOB-You know how the hitters, are making improvements with Walker,as hitting coach. What about the pitchers, and bunting runners over, and trying to help the team like that? Are the pitchers working with bunting skills, and have they improved? Just would like to know, because that is important too? We need pitchers to bunt runners over in scoring position. Last year the bunting was pathetic.Peace Out!
