I don’t think DOB is cranky. I think he is allergic to ignorance and stupidity.
February 25th, 20124:14 pm
Lew, their violinist was great, it is one of the things I still remember ahout their shows..
I know you have seen alot of good bands over the years.. My fave would still have to be Thin Lizzy..
One band I would have given anything to see, was Rainbow, in the early days with Dio, do have all their live stuff though..
talking about the internet, logged on in 95…
February 25th, 20124:15 pm
Ray,probably why he doesn’t hang around here as much.
Coach (2012 Fredi's beisbol fandango)
My first computer was a Vendex 8088. Had those huge five inch floppy’s. About all it could do was run DOS and play donkey Kong and Pacman by inserting the floppy’s.
February 25th, 20124:17 pm
I saw Thin Lizzy open for Queen in Hollywood, Fl back during the Day At The Races Tour. That was a great show never to be seen ever again with Freddie Mercury and Phil Lynott both gone.
Never saw Rainbow, but did see Deep Purple with Blackmore – also saw them with Tommy Bolin and with Stever Morse on guitar. Never saw them with Satriani finishing Blackmore’s last tour, though
Wow Coach…i thought i was old…..Thanks for those memory
I’d hate it if people who have little idea of what goes on most of the time criticized my profession too.
Oh wait…people do that all the time
February 25th, 20124:18 pm
8088, with what 360k of RAM?
huge Thin Lizzie fan, a shame they are not in the R&R HOF. liked Kansas a lot too
Blog mon I saw rainbow with Dio in the fox Krocus opened Sraight between the eyes It was awesome four way King Tut awesome
I enjoyed listening to my CTRON 800 growing up

“No other nourishment at all, as there is none available in the stadium and only overpriced mediocrity at the lone restaurant on the grounds.” DOB
Surely DOB, the AJC can afford to spring for a rental car.
Been online since 1991….can’t believe twenty years have gone by already with PC’s.
beats 4K in VW size anyday
February 25th, 20124:21 pm
Lew, I saw Thin Lizzy in Reading England, never got to see them here in the US, always something bad happened to cancel their tours here..
Did see Black Sabbath with Dio though, their Heaven and Hell tour.. also saw them with the Black and Blue tour, with Blue Oyster Cult…
just don’t have those quality of bands anymore..
What were people doing online in 1991? Playing Q-Bert?
ARPANET or NSFNET coach?
February 25th, 20124:22 pm
February 25th, 2012
I honestly don’t remember. Of course that was before I figured out how to tear computers apart and upgrade them.
I wonder if in this new age newspapers are making more or less money. I mean…I read it for free. I know they make a lot of money off advertisements but don’t know if that’s more or less than the subscriptions lost
Once whilst playing in FLA this dude got on stage and sang with me for an hour when we took a break I said You can sing your — off he said I just got off the Road I said who with He said Kansas That dude could sing
February 25th, 20124:23 pm
well you said 1991, so IIRC ARPANET was already decommissioned
Are you guys just all-capping letters and adding numbers at the end? I feel like some of you more wise bloggers are just playing a game
February 25th, 20124:24 pm
After Lowe, I don’t think the braves are going anywhere near a player with a drinking problem.Forget Hamilton.
Nolie, there are a lot of good bands that should be in the R&R hall of shame but aren’t, it’s a joke..
Thin Lizzy, Rush, Heart, Deep Purple, KISS, just to name a few..
February 25th, 20124:25 pm
February 25th, 2012
ARPANET or NSFNET coach?
I dunno, I was in the military at the time. They had some sort of intranet networked around the world. We had a BBS board up and running back in 1991. I could chat with other military folks all around the globe. Come to think of it, the system was the precursor to today’s modern blogs.
oh c’mon Jeffrey nobody here is all that much wiser than you are, and you can sing too
Blog Monitor – There’s still some good ones out there if you get into hard rock. The new Lillian Axe cd is good and there are some European rockers like Cornerstone, Tarot, Ram and a bunch of others you’d probably like.
Some old favorites like Europe are back and got much heavier and harder and less pop – they’ve put out some good stuff the past several years.
George Lynch is playing with Lizzy Borden and Dokken went and got heavier, too, though Don Dokken will always be a pop star at heart.
Molly Hatchet still puts out some good saouthern rock every year or two, as well..
February 25th, 20124:26 pm
DOB: Thanks for the great info. you and Carroll provide about the Braves. I like some others have said, suggest you disregard posts like the one Kyle made.
I know, but I used wise as a nice way of saying something else
first PC I used was in 85 I believe, they weren’t much at the time…
February 25th, 20124:27 pm
KISS has more Gold Albums than any other American band, 28 I believe
February 25th, 20124:28 pm
same bat channel
same bat station
we get to hear play ball
Tomahawkin (The Godfather)
If I’m Not Mistaking…?
The Blog started around May of 2005…?
Because If I remember correctly…? The Blog wasn’t around for the 2004 NLDS, The One Where Chris Reeksma Imploded against The Astros who had Carlos Blowtran show Out on us?
Hamilton played A ball here in Charleston SC- he was and is an incredible player but Braves tend to shy away from those who have strayed or are controversial – maybe Sheffield was the exception- hopefully Hamilton can be strong and hold off his demons
I’ve always wondered why ABBA should be in the Rock and Roll HOF and Deep Purple isn’t. Makes no sense.
I don’t think anybody was making stuff up
Before The Blog All there was on here was The Vent and old TBS
February 25th, 20124:29 pm
Yep, 2005. The beginning of this blog.
Lew, yes there is, ever heard of Nightwish? Female lead singer, they have some good stuff, check out their song Nemo…
I mean, when I think of Rock and Roll anthems, I always think of Dancing Queen before Smoke on the Water..
February 25th, 20124:30 pm
anyone ever heard of c & m traveling show
Just picked up a Nightwish CD (not sure which one) and only had a chance to listen to a couple tunes. If you like them, check out Ancient Bards from Italy.
now early 2005 sounds more like it to me, when I first started reading it didn’t sound like I had missed all that much time.
February 25th, 20124:32 pm
Bet you’d like Dragonforce, too. Great, really fast and proficient guitar work from a couple of very good guitarists, Sam Tottman and Herman Li. Good singer, too.
February 25th, 20124:33 pm
I don’t remember exactly when the blog started, was reading the AJC online well before though..
just remember in the beginning getting “clowned” by DOB, because my name (different at the time) was too long to type when he replied to me..
cut and paste wasn’t invented then..
February 25th, 20124:34 pm
2005 sounds about right. I know I was here pretty early on, but there were others here before that back in the dys of Letwan Anthony and his Mama’s pies.
Also was to be in the Fulton county Stadium early and listen in the radio Skid/Johnson/and the Profesor to updated.
Listening to some Nightwish now. thanx for the mention
February 25th, 20124:35 pm
MLB’s response to Braun in Star Wars opening credits form
least of the east
if Bourn plays too well, we’ll have 0 chance of keeping him. if he’s mediocre, we will have a 10% chance.
Braves talk a good game, but it is played on the field. this lefty stacked lineup is no match for any decent lefthander.
by July, the fans will know that a playoff spot is wishful thinking.
Liberty Media couldn’t care less. MLB shouldn’t even allow a disinterested owner like that who is based hundreds of miles away.
February 25th, 20124:37 pm
If you like Nightwish and melodic metal, check out the Limb Records site – a German company that deals exclusively with the genre and does some great, slick recording and packagig of their bands with exceptional liner notes and design. Their stuff is a bit on the high end for cd’s price wise, but you get a very good prodcut and some good music that is NOT mainstream. like Ancient Bardss, Magic Kingdom, Excalion and Ghost Machinery.
February 25th, 20124:39 pm
Nolie, didn’t think you were the Nightwish type, and Thin Lizzy too, awesome…
yeah I like melodic metal, some others has just gotten too much for me now days. I’ll try those you mentioned above. Thanx
February 25th, 20124:41 pm
Lew, thanks for the suggestions..
February 25th, 20124:42 pm
With a bit harder edge, Storm Warrior and Iron Fire are good, too.
Been listening to some old Heathen and Leatherwolf, too.
February 25th, 20124:43 pm
Lew, with those names, you just know they are European bands..
February 25th, 20124:44 pm
I like Buck Cherry a lot, too. Was the oldest person at their show in Orlando at the Huse of Blues at Downtown Disney.
electric blues (Muddy Waters invented electricity) Southern Rock, most all rock til the mid-90s, not so much since then and what I do like such as Gvt Mule and Black Keys heavily influenced by older stuff. I have liked some of the singer-songwriters that DOB has mentioned too though
February 25th, 20124:47 pm
since I’ve always been more of a single song guy, though usually the album cut, and less of an entire album guy the digital age off the web is heaven for me. amazing what you can get off YouTube and other places with Audacity
February 25th, 20124:48 pm
Blog Monitor – Yep, Scandanavian, but not like the Norweigian Death Metal dueds like Dimmu Borgir – I don’t really like extreme gutteral vocals – though have been known to get into bands like Trivium and Children of Bodom every now and then.
You might also like White Wizzard (don’t let the name turn you off), Stratovarius, Avantasia, Ed Guy and Jon Oliva’s Pain (offshoot of Savatage and Trans Siberian Railroad).
February 25th, 20124:49 pm
yeah, you can really go off on different directions on youtube with the other songs on the side bars..
I think the Braves will not resign Bourn. The number of years will be the main reason I would not want to resign him. I do not think signing Bourn for 6 years would be a good use of the Braves limited funds.
I hate to say it but I think the Braves should try to sign Victorino for 3/$39M next year. Would Victorino sign for that? If not the other option might be to try and trade for Bourjos from the Angels. Bourjos had OPS last year, his 2nd season of .327, and an OPS of .765.
Victorino would give the Braves time to develop their own CFer, or Bourjos would be around for 4 or 5 years.
February 25th, 20124:50 pm
nolie – Check out Blackstone Cherry – southern metal. Think Skynyrd channeled through Zeppelin Two.
The NFL combine on, some things just stupid. I do not care the vertical jump is for QB’s. Its like in baseball tryouts, I do not care how fast a kid can run the 60 in a straight line.
February 25th, 20124:51 pm
Hit send too quick. The 60 that matters to me is how fast can the kid get from home to 2nd. 1rst to 3rd or 2nd to home. To me that is the only 60 that matters.
February 25th, 20124:53 pm
luv Seger, used to go see him in Cobo all the time
February 25th, 20124:54 pm
thanx for the Blackstone Cherry too. like it so far
February 25th, 20125:00 pm
DOB, treat yourself to a really good meal somewhere in Orlando!
February 25th, 20125:06 pm
nolie, February 25th, 2012, 3:39 pm … “they just said the other day that the Braves are losing 6 mil this year right now, …”
Braves lost 6 million last year because of retroactively book-keeping Lowe’s 10 mil. It’s an accounting gimmick to get a tax break.
February 25th, 20125:09 pm
Wake up Heels.
O'BRIEN THE KIDDER
February 25th, 20125:13 pm
dave — if this is all you come up with in 12 hrs a day, it might be time to look for another job, must be 11/2 hrs on baseball. 101/2 hrs on some goofy list of songs, (that you like), i care nothing about your taste in music or motorcycles- give me 4 good hrs of baseball stories—. or just 10 min,
and copy mark bowman.
i musta misread that
February 25th, 20125:15 pm
copy Mark Bowman? you gotta be freakin’ kidding. Mark Bowman????
just go read the idiot yourself
February 25th, 20125:19 pm
Here come all the cuckoo banana people.
Because there’s always tons to write about during the first full-squad day of spring training…
February 25th, 20125:21 pm
DOB, thanks for what you do.
Kyle, eff you.
February 25th, 20125:23 pm
DOB, or anyone else… I know this isn’t exactly a measurable thing, but has there been any talk about the return of that crazy loud “thwak” Heyward had two years ago returning? I remember Bobby likening it to the sound Mantle’s swings made, and Chipper talked about trying to get it back.
I just wonder if it is.
come on squits come on….
I love the people that spend all this time complaining about how DOB does his job. If you don’t like it, why do you bother reading? There are plenty of other sources to find baseball news. Besides- you many stories have to be written that would take 4 hours to read through????
February 25th, 20125:24 pm
O’BRIEN THE KIDDER
Nobody forces you to come here, don’t like it, don’t let the blog door hit ya on the way out..
How many… Not you many…
February 25th, 20125:25 pm
cuckoo banana people, I ♥ it
February 25th, 20125:26 pm
Oh, and @ O’BRIEN THE KIDDER, eff you too. And while we’re at it… eff Phillies fans, gas prices, the White Stripes’ breakup, and original sin. That’s all I can think of right now.
February 25th, 20125:28 pm
And the show Whitney, on NBC. Now I’m done.
February 25th, 20125:30 pm
50 cents per use, nolie polie.
February 25th, 20125:43 pm
The blog has come to a halt as we all root on our Cavs… (NOT Cleveland)…
February 25th, 20125:46 pm
“DOB, thanks for what you do.
Kyle, eff you.”
lol, But that dude deserved it…Obviously the people who rip D.O.B. don’t follow him during his season, with flights Xtra inning games, late rain delays etc…
The dude Has the extended schedule of a baseball player minus the pay
Now back to old Metallica
February 25th, 20125:51 pm
DOB’s boys have cut the 13 point deficit to 5…
February 25th, 20125:55 pm
Becoming the Archetype – the founders of whom I graduated HS wih – is the only metal band I like (at least I think they’re classified as metal)
Here’s one from their newest album, which sounds different than their older stuff since they added another guitar player who sings and they added more clean vocals and harmonies
February 25th, 20125:56 pm
Good win, Soph!
Not a great game for UNC but a win’s a win.
PS – I don’t know what you mean by “too much” but there’s screaming.
buuuut the lyrics are Christian
February 25th, 20125:58 pm
Thanks, VJ. The next month is going to be fun.
February 25th, 20126:00 pm
Glad to see that I should be home and able to watch next Saturday…
February 25th, 20126:03 pm
Dave, I read you often. I was about to accuse you of being full of a four letter word that ends in T and is not the word dirt. But I bought 2 Sunday editions of the AJC today (Saturday) in North Georgia and there was hardly enough newsprint there to start a week’s worth of fires. (To be honest, my only reason for buying them.) It was about as thick as our local Clayton Tribune! But, an expense paid trip to Florida and living in a condo?? I would hardly be complaining. Many of us Braves’ fans would have to hitchhike down there and sleep under a bridge at night to watch our team. I enjoy your articles, but please, let’s keep things in some sort of perspective here. Thanks!!
VJ, how about those Panthers too?
February 25th, 20126:04 pm
What about UGA beating #11 Florida by 14?
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
