If Robert Fish doesn’t make the Braves he can sign with any team as he becomes a free agent because this is his second time as a rule 5 selection. Braves are out the $50,000.00 investment.

I think its a given that Pastornicky will be a overall upgrade over SeaBass with the bat. Pastor has a much better approach at the plate and has a knack for putting the ball in play. Also he has really good speed which should help on the base paths. I think he could steal around 20 bases. Batting 8th will limit that tho. But he could get a good amount of chances when the pitcher fails to move him over to steal a base with 2 outs and Bourn batting. It’s safe to say he’s gonna be a downgrade on defense, but hopefully he will solid.
February 18th, 201212:59 pm
Bye everyone heading for Florida.See you Tuesday
February 18th, 20121:01 pm
I am projecting that the kid will commit around 21 errors for the entire season.
February 18th, 20121:09 pm
We can only hope PASTORNICKY will be anougher FURCAL, able to step right in to starting role at SS as a rookie. It does not happen often.
February 18th, 20121:23 pm
Furcal made the team in 2000, as a Rookie, backing up staring SS Walt Weiss, and when Wiess was injured in May, with a hamstring pull, Furcal took over as the replacement. Injuries limited Walt Weiss to 192 at-bats last year, his lowest total since 1991. Weiss’ strained hamstring in May, sprained thumb in June and strained knee ligament in July and August meant rookie Rafael Furcal saw most of the activity at shortstop for the Braves.

Darlington -re Elvis albums, don’t sleep on King of America. Not a bad song in the bunch. Really great.
February 18th, 20121:42 pm
Ray that is a decent prediction of 21 errors for Pastor. Elvis Andrus had error seasons in the ladt three years in minors of 32, 30, and 32 and was called up and only made error totals of 22, 16, and 25 in his first three years in Texas
Alex Gonzalez had 12 errors, which is two (2) errors per month. If Pastor has 21 errors that would be three (3.5) errors per month
February 18th, 20121:49 pm
Andrelton Simmons could be in the Omar Vizquel mold with the glove and bat. Hopefully not Jack Wilson or Rey Ordonez.
February 18th, 20121:59 pm
I’m going to measure Pastornicky’s success on whether or not he gets a standing ovation
February 18th, 20122:04 pm
Sure hope the youngster is ready, be nice to add a little more speed for a change.
February 18th, 20122:14 pm
Never know Pastornicky could slide to 2nd base in the future and Simmons goes to short. Uggla might could handle Left Field. Simmons defense is so good right now and is faster than Pastor. Could make a great double play in the future.
February 18th, 20122:27 pm
well I just got back from watching the most awesome baseball practice EVER!!!!!
February 18th, 20122:29 pm
McCann hit a single and do a cartwheel from home to first?
February 18th, 20122:32 pm
Several points about Pastornicky and his defense (I have NOT seen him, so this is speculative, but could be how it shakes out).
One – AA fields have notoriously terrible infields and awful lighting and many decent defensive players had atrocious error totals in the minors because of this.
Two – Few minor league teams have Freedie Freeman and the reach of a 6′5″ firstbaseman who can dig throws out and save many errors.
Three – Jack Wilson, while a not good offensive shortstop, can pick it with the best of them and has taken Pastornickly under his wing and is tutoring him. That should help considerably.
February 18th, 20122:34 pm
no but little tiger sure had a blast…
February 18th, 20122:40 pm
High five, little tiger
February 18th, 20122:48 pm
he is taking a nap but I’ll give it to him when he getes up
it was awesome…there is another kid on the team pushing the bottome end of the age bracket and every time he would field a ground ball ran over to the fence to high five his mom
right now little tiger is projecting as an all stick no glove 2B with average speed/range but its still early
February 18th, 20122:49 pm
Once the Braves signed Jack Wilson, the shakiness of the decision to start Pastornicky become significantly less. If The Rev stinks it up, Braves have some time to find a replacement (or give Pastornicky the time to work on the yips). It’s not like they’re putting Brooks Conrad or Martin Prado out there.
I hope so about Pastor. Defense is key at shortstop. I really hope Simmons continues to improve and show he can hit enough to be a everyday guy in the big leagues too. IMO Pastornicky seems like a better 2nd baseman long term and we could have something with this 2 kids going forward maybe.
I hear McCann does that after practice too
February 18th, 20122:53 pm
I miss playing little league. I played for 7 years. I was a all glove no bat kid. I played Centerfield and batted last lol. I was voted the best defensive outfielder in 5 of those years. Out of roughly 15 guys. I bunted alot and used my speed lol, my final year at 18 years old I was our lead off batter. I miss it a ton and regret not trying out for highschool.
I still play little league. I dominate those suckers

Carroll has written a very good article on Greg Walker, his assistant Scott Fletcher and the use of video for hitting analysis and instruction. Chipper’s comments about being a visual person and needing to see something rather than listen to someone explain it was very interesting. I believe this would apply to many of the younger players. Scott has come up with some video techniques to overlay old and new video to show an old swing and new swing at the same time. I think the addition of Greg and Scott will be more important than most people believe. It may have as big of an impact as the big bat that many people wanted.

bryn – at most academies they use big time video analysis of the swing for kids. The MLB program also has swings of many, many different players and you can put the kid and the player (whose swing they may resemble) side by side. Very cool technology. Easy to break down the swing and focus on different aspects. Wish I had that growing up.
The North Carolina Baseball Academy uses that technology

Linebrink reported to Cardinals camp today, after signing minor-league deal and getting non-roster invite. He told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
“I feel like I played a little bit of a part in that … collapse we had over in Atlanta,” Linebrink said while unpacking his Braves duffel bag. “It was crazy. It was like a three-week car wreck, watching it in slow motion. … We ran out of gas, and it was hard to watch knowing how good we were for 5 ½ months.”

DOB – what are the top 3 things you will look for in spring training?
In no particular order: Pastornicky, Heyward, and health of Hudson/Jurrjens/Hanson (along with Hanson’s new delivery).
February 18th, 20124:36 pm
The Cardinals had a man on the inside !!!!!!!!!!

I just opened mail from, “Lawn Dawg”. They’re trying to solicit my business.

February 18th, 20124:47 pm
Read where Jurrjens will be pitching with the leg brace again to start with. That combined with JJ’s own estimate of being at eighty percent, will make him worth keeping an eye on during spring training.
February 18th, 20124:48 pm
Hey Tom O’Hawke,
I am just chilling till time for the wake tonight, then funeral tomorrow.
HOW DARE THEY CUT GRASS TOO!!!!!!!!!!
February 18th, 20124:56 pm
We cut our lawns to give them an Estate appearance. All our lawns are hand cut using surgically sharp hand scissors. The advantage to that is we will still be there cutting your lawn, when it needs cutting again, so no need to call us.

Yep, combined with the concerns surrounding Hudson, Jurrjens and Hanson, along with what should be a battle for three bullpen spots, one rotational starter, and two bench players…..this should be one unpredictable spring training

Hello everyone! I sure hope Pastor doesn’t have a bad Spring? Some times you can have bad Spring, but still have a great season after.Braves could put Drew Sutton in at SS.Just incase Pastor has a bad season to start out with, but I think Pastor will be fine.
February 18th, 20125:37 pm
I would keep an eye on Drew Sutton. He could be one of the key bench players this year?

IF Brandon Hicks starts hitting he could make it very interesting for the infield positions this Spring?
February 18th, 20125:49 pm
Let’s say Pastor lives up to his name, and meets all spectations? Simmoms has a great two seasons in the Minors, and is ready in 2 years? Do you trade some of the other talent for out field bat in two years?

IF Brandon Hicks starts hitting he could make it very interesting for the infield positions this Spring? Ward
And if pigs had wings…..
February 18th, 20126:03 pm
Let’s not jump on the kid at ss if he starts off a bit slow in ST. It will be natural if he is a bit nervous and it may take a short period of time to stop his head from spinning a little. In regards to his defense, yes Wilson is helping him. I remember a few off seasons ago, there was a particular 2nd baseman Hubbard worked with on defense. There was a lot of concern on that players defense as well.

I ’spect Wren will cross that bridge in 2 years, if he has to. Let’s hope he has to. It would be a nice problem for the Braves to have, don’t you think?
Enquiring Minds Want to Know-If you see car that goes down the Highway? Could you please step in front of it.

February 18th, 20126:24 pm
Brandon Hicks has always had the glove work to play in the big leagues, and did have a decent season last year in triple A (.252 BA – 18 HR’s – 50 RBI – .779 OPS).
However, his career .241 BA in the minors doesn’t translate well to the big leagues. Dude might make it one day as a bench player, but nobody is expecting him to crash the party anytime soon.

February 18th, 20127:27 pm
Tom- Seattle could be interested in Matt Flynn?
February 18th, 20127:28 pm
It would be a nice problem to have if Pastornicky and Simmons both prove ML ready in the next couple years. Ugla might become a third baseman. I think he could transition there better than left field.
Tom- Is it Ryan Flynn?Anyways Packers could lose their back up Q?
February 18th, 20127:31 pm
Matt Flynn, Ward. And, yes, I suspect many teams would be interested. GB can only keep him if they label him a franchise player…. or something like that (see, cab).
February 18th, 20127:33 pm
Uggla at 3rd? That’s interesting… I never gave that a thought.
February 18th, 20127:39 pm
How about Pastor SS,and move Simmons to 3rd.Just an idea their? When that time comes.Never thought Uggla at third either.
February 18th, 20127:43 pm
From the defensive range standpoint, Uggla at 3rd sounds doable. Of course, changing positions in the ML is no easy task. It’s an interesting idea, though.
We’ll have to run it by nolie. If anyone will poo-poo the idea, it’ll be nolie.

I liked the way Tom Boswell closed his column today:
For weeks, friends and even strangers have asked me, in essence, “Is it safe?” to start investing allegiance, rather than passing interest, in the Nats.
It’s never safe. It’s baseball. But it’s time. That window is finally open. A new Nationals era, joyful or otherwise, begins this weekend.
I should let him know how many people here have conceded second place to them…
Tom – I think not…
