If Robert Fish doesn’t make the Braves he can sign with any team as he becomes a free agent because this is his second time as a rule 5 selection. Braves are out the $50,000.00 investment.
I think its a given that Pastornicky will be a overall upgrade over SeaBass with the bat. Pastor has a much better approach at the plate and has a knack for putting the ball in play. Also he has really good speed which should help on the base paths. I think he could steal around 20 bases. Batting 8th will limit that tho. But he could get a good amount of chances when the pitcher fails to move him over to steal a base with 2 outs and Bourn batting. It’s safe to say he’s gonna be a downgrade on defense, but hopefully he will solid.
Furcal made the team in 2000, as a Rookie, backing up staring SS Walt Weiss, and when Wiess was injured in May, with a hamstring pull, Furcal took over as the replacement. Injuries limited Walt Weiss to 192 at-bats last year, his lowest total since 1991. Weiss’ strained hamstring in May, sprained thumb in June and strained knee ligament in July and August meant rookie Rafael Furcal saw most of the activity at shortstop for the Braves.
Ray that is a decent prediction of 21 errors for Pastor. Elvis Andrus had error seasons in the ladt three years in minors of 32, 30, and 32 and was called up and only made error totals of 22, 16, and 25 in his first three years in Texas
Alex Gonzalez had 12 errors, which is two (2) errors per month. If Pastor has 21 errors that would be three (3.5) errors per month
Never know Pastornicky could slide to 2nd base in the future and Simmons goes to short. Uggla might could handle Left Field. Simmons defense is so good right now and is faster than Pastor. Could make a great double play in the future.
Several points about Pastornicky and his defense (I have NOT seen him, so this is speculative, but could be how it shakes out).
One – AA fields have notoriously terrible infields and awful lighting and many decent defensive players had atrocious error totals in the minors because of this.
Two – Few minor league teams have Freedie Freeman and the reach of a 6′5″ firstbaseman who can dig throws out and save many errors.
Three – Jack Wilson, while a not good offensive shortstop, can pick it with the best of them and has taken Pastornickly under his wing and is tutoring him. That should help considerably.
he is taking a nap but I’ll give it to him when he getes up
it was awesome…there is another kid on the team pushing the bottome end of the age bracket and every time he would field a ground ball ran over to the fence to high five his mom
right now little tiger is projecting as an all stick no glove 2B with average speed/range but its still early
Once the Braves signed Jack Wilson, the shakiness of the decision to start Pastornicky become significantly less. If The Rev stinks it up, Braves have some time to find a replacement (or give Pastornicky the time to work on the yips). It’s not like they’re putting Brooks Conrad or Martin Prado out there.
I hope so about Pastor. Defense is key at shortstop. I really hope Simmons continues to improve and show he can hit enough to be a everyday guy in the big leagues too. IMO Pastornicky seems like a better 2nd baseman long term and we could have something with this 2 kids going forward maybe.
I miss playing little league. I played for 7 years. I was a all glove no bat kid. I played Centerfield and batted last lol. I was voted the best defensive outfielder in 5 of those years. Out of roughly 15 guys. I bunted alot and used my speed lol, my final year at 18 years old I was our lead off batter. I miss it a ton and regret not trying out for highschool.
Carroll has written a very good article on Greg Walker, his assistant Scott Fletcher and the use of video for hitting analysis and instruction. Chipper’s comments about being a visual person and needing to see something rather than listen to someone explain it was very interesting. I believe this would apply to many of the younger players. Scott has come up with some video techniques to overlay old and new video to show an old swing and new swing at the same time. I think the addition of Greg and Scott will be more important than most people believe. It may have as big of an impact as the big bat that many people wanted.
If Robert Fish doesn’t make the Braves he can sign with any team as he becomes a free agent because this is his second time as a rule 5 selection. Braves are out the $50,000.00 investment.

bryn – at most academies they use big time video analysis of the swing for kids. The MLB program also has swings of many, many different players and you can put the kid and the player (whose swing they may resemble) side by side. Very cool technology. Easy to break down the swing and focus on different aspects. Wish I had that growing up.
The North Carolina Baseball Academy uses that technology
Being a Georgia grad (my freshman year was the year of the Harrick scandal/us being on probation), I enjoy seeing other basketball powerhouses and big matches (ie Duke/UNC)

I ’spect Wren will cross that bridge in 2 years, if he has to. Let’s hope he has to. It would be a nice problem for the Braves to have, don’t you think?
Brandon Hicks has always had the glove work to play in the big leagues, and did have a decent season last year in triple A (.252 BA – 18 HR’s – 50 RBI – .779 OPS).
However, his career .241 BA in the minors doesn’t translate well to the big leagues. Dude might make it one day as a bench player, but nobody is expecting him to crash the party anytime soon.

I have it on while I’m in the house. I really get to work on the upcoming songs when they give you a hint (like how many songs starting with, “magic”). Unfortunately, my vacuuming wiped a lot of that out.
I liked the way Tom Boswell closed his column today:
For weeks, friends and even strangers have asked me, in essence, “Is it safe?” to start investing allegiance, rather than passing interest, in the Nats.
It’s never safe. It’s baseball. But it’s time. That window is finally open. A new Nationals era, joyful or otherwise, begins this weekend.
I should let him know how many people here have conceded second place to them…

I am not listening as obsessively as I have in the past – I was sorry I missed Mack the Knife and Madman Across the Water…

I have it on while I’m in the house. I really get to work on the upcoming songs when they give you a hint (like how many songs starting with, “magic”). Unfortunately, my vacuuming wiped a lot of that out.

This station wouldn’t play, Margaritaville, would they? It doesn’t seem to fit within their genre.

DOB: Has Bubba gone down to be with the team this spring? Don’t you just want to give him a big hug every time you see him?
I’m looking forward to joining your fun times at Dark Star for a week the middle of next month…… Xing off the days!
