Honeybee, even with offnesive woes last year, as bad as it can be really they still almost won 90 games, There’s no way they are going to win less than 81 when they actually employ a centerfielder that can actually play on opening day for the first time in years.
Hanson did not have rotator cuff surgery and has changed his workout regimen and delivery to remove the cause for his pain . Jurrjens foot issues leading to the knee issues have been resolved.
Truth. However, “knee issues have been resolved” I’d amend to “addressed.” Only a full, healthy season from him will verify that the knee issues have been resolved.
Likewise, Hanson’s new delivery and rest have to be tested to verify they are an improvement.
But going into camp, this news is good and certainly better than the alternative… aka The Wren Roster Approach: No actions were taken and all hope is based upon a flip of the calendar.
As far as the other teams gettting better. The Nats have a bunch of pitchers that throw fastballs and that’s about it. Good luck with that over 162.
The Marlins are going to be one of the most facinating slow burning fuse to mid year explosion teams you’ve ever seen. All those personalities, all that pressure, the worst uniforms and worst centerfield display of all time. It’s going to be a trainwreck of Jersey Shore proportions.
This is the year for Hanson to step up and be our Ace. Hopefully the whole shoulder concerns are solved… I’m projecting Hanson to pitch 220 Innings and go 18 and 10 with a 2.80 ERA
Assuming that the Braves won’t score as many runs while the other teams will score more is just that- an assumption.
Braves suck and anybody else in a uni is better. Standard blog fare, setting the low bar of expectation reduces the possibility of disappointment.

So, in one off-season Burnett was courted by the Atlanta Braves. He opted to sign with the AL East Yankees for a large stash of cash. The NL East Braves turned to Lowe for a chunk of change.
In the same off-season several years later both pitchers are salary dumped to struggling teams in the Central Division of opposing leagues.
I don’t think that level of symmetry happens often.

Pretty bold prediction for a pitcher that is changing his mechanics and coming off of surgery.
Much as “Linsanity” has gripped the NBA, “Freemania” will take over MLB this year. I really do believe that Freeman is going to have a tremendous season… he’s been in the league, he’s shown he can make adjustments, and he seems to have a really good head on his shoulders.
Women all over America will swoon as Freeman steps up to the plate and strikes his “Blue Steel” pose, unibrow tilted ever so slightly.
I think the innings workload on the bullpen will be reduced by a combination of 3 things starters pitching more innings, offense scoring more and a couple of better arms in the pen.
Hanson, JJ, Beachy, Minor should all pitch more innings and deeper into games than last season. Uggla, Heyward and Prado should all improve at the plate. Hopefully this will decrease the number of close games where Fredi needs to use the main three bullpen guys. And with Medlen, Varvaro, Ascencio, Moylan, Martinez and maybe Vizcanio… the pen should be deep and solid so Fredi will use others besides O’Ventbrel in stressful innings.
The bullpen was historically good last season… so I don’t think we can hope for a repeat on the stats, but hopefully the wins come even with reduced numbers….
the pen should be deep and solid so Fredi will use others besides O’Ventbrel in stressful innings.
I don’t think I’d hang my hat on that one. And, frankly, I’m not all that sure that I want Fredo to use the other guys in high-leverage situations. I mean, it’s not a dishwasher, you don’t have to evenly space the load.
My hope, shared by many (I think), is that there are fewer high-leverage innings late, but, what of them there are, I want those two back-end beasts throwing ‘em.
Whatever you say Raleigh, You have your opinion but frankly i have my right to disagree. Its been fun guys but have to go to work fo now See you tommorrow.
Bat was kidnapped by and made a sex slave of a coven of midwestern retired school teachers one day on the beach and is still in captivity trying to earn has release.
10paul why the reds? they really took a step back last season offensively
So did the Braves. Seems to me, if it is reasonable for the Braves to take a step forward offensively this year with essentially the same exact line up, then it is just as reasonable to suspect the Reds offense could bounce back.
except in 2010 when the reds led the eague in scoring, they had some players haveing career years to get it done. last year was regression to the norm.
i was only questioning them being among the best teams in the NL, with offense only being part of it. the braves and their offense have nothing to do with that, so im not sure why you are comparing reds and braves offenses.
on the braves rotation, every braves pitcher except hudson is healthy, and thats only temporary. im not worried about the health of our pitchers any more then a i ever would be about any pitcher.

Precisely because the other extreme of this blog is that all the breaks will go the Braves way and zero will go the opponents way. It is always somewhere in the middle.
So why did I mention the Braves? As I stated in that initial post: if it is reasonable for the Braves to take a step forward offensively this year with essentially the same exact line up, then it is just as reasonable to suspect the Reds offense could bounce back.
10paul if it is reasonable for the Braves to take a step forward offensively this year with essentially the same exact line up, then it is just as reasonable to suspect the Reds offense could bounce back.
hm, ok. well i think the 2011 reds WAS their offense “bouncing back”. they regressed to the norm after some players had career years in 2010. if the braves regress to the norm, they will be better. im saying last year was more normal for the reds. we will see though.
Lol. I dunno, after this whole off-season, only really disappointed about not getting Beltran, that’s about it. Didn’t want to get rid of Jurrjens or Prado, and there weren’t really any other Short Stops or Outfielders to be had.
If the team rebounds and can consistently score runs they could win the division. If everyone plays up to last year’s standards this team could be battling for 3rd or 4th in the division.
Ten Paul – I’ll go along with that. What I’m really saying is that it’s one thing having problems and another when you have problems that seem to have been addressed.
Same with bullpen overuse – they have a much deeper pen this year. The problem should be addressed.
VaBravesFan – [This is the year for Hanson to step up and be our Ace. Hopefully the whole shoulder concerns are solved… I’m projecting Hanson to pitch 220 Innings and go 18 and 10 with a 2.80 ERA]———————————————————————————–
“Pretty bold prediction for a pitcher that is changing his mechanics and coming off of surgery.”
Co-Sign…Not To Mention That Big Red has gotten Sh=tty Run run Support his whole career…18 wins is a stretch!
Hanson has Ace stuff. The guy has the best upside of our 5 starters. All comes down to health. He owns a 32-22 career record with a 3.28 ERA in 460 Innings with 431 K’s.
If Brandon Beachy could develop a better breaking ball to go along with his elite fastball and solid change he could be much much better than all the guru’s think. Beachy has one of the best 4 seam fastballs in all of baseball.
Take It To Vegas People That The Braves will Have a Winning April since we have a Cake Schedule the 1st month…
How we fare in April will determine a lot on weather we contend for the division title or the Crappy Wild-Card…Because Our Schedule From May-The All Star Break is Brutal!!!
BB’s Stuff is already there…He has the composure of a Young Kevin Millwood…
BB only won 7 out of 25 decisions last year due to Crap Run Support as well…And BB had a slight problem with giving up the Big Inning in a lot of his starts which resulted in a lot of No Decisions, that is another ripple effect of when the team behind you doesn’t give you a few runs to play with early in games….
Carroll’s story on Greg Walker was right on! Greg is a super person that I’ve know for last 25 years. Looking forward to see him in dugout working with players. Go Braves.
Thanks carroll!
To revive the convo from the a.m. about FISH, MOYLAN, ASENCIO and MARTINEZ being the last man standing in the bull-pen to start the season.
As I pointed out before on the blog, the BRAVES continue a search stretching back to last season with SHERRILL and FLANDE for a third lefty reliefer. Only FISH among the above referenced reliefers is a lefty, and right now, I think that’s a spot he has with a decent spring.
ASENCIO had a light’s out off-season right into late January with the exception of three or four outings when I think he tired a bit from not having much of an off-season. I believe he’s ready to contribute in ATLANTA.
C-MART has certainly proven his abilities in ATLANTA, but at this point I can’t say I prefer him to JAIRO. They’re pretty even in my estimation going into ST.
MOYLAN will have to recover in AAA I’m afraid, and be ready for ATLANTA injury relief in 2012 only.
Yes I agree that it is probable that Moylan will be in AAA to start the season, and I’m pretty sure that Delgado and/or Teheran will not be in the pen no matter what Fredi said a while ago that got some here angry
April 3 Braves vs. Braves prospects game will be shown on MLB.tv
Given that fact that Fredi has expressed an interest in having every single prospect in the system in the Braves bullpen I’m not guessing this will be a very good game.
The Braves vs Gilmartin and The Terd. Actually, might be a better game than I thought.
Other Than seeing who makes the Final Spot in the rotation…The biggest S. Training battle will be who gets sent down or cut (Out of otions release or trade) from the bullpen…And That won’t be decided til late March…
And Watching The Pastor During the games for those who are lucky enough to be in front of a TV during the working hours will be someting to watch as well, especially how he fares in the field…
Using Vizcaino in relief is really stupid. A young pitcher with that kind of ability should be given every opportunity to start; it’s way better to have a really good pitcher going 200 innings a year instead of working 70.
not a waste when there are so many listed ahead of him, if he is ready to help at the major league level, not taking advantage of that would be foolish. as others have said, they can always make him a starter after Jurrjens and perhaps Hudson leave
A young pitcher with that kind of ability should be given every opportunity to start; it’s way better to have a really good pitcher going 200 innings a year instead of working 70.
And with Hanson, Hudson, Jurrjens, Minor, Beachy, Teheran, and Delgado also being starters, where does Vizcaino fit?
Man the arms are really piling up for the BRAVES. Getting really crowded in the pen as well as with the starters.
Does anyone see CHRIS JONES making the PEARL RIVER roster because he’s a lefty? His record has been pretty spotty with the INDIANS being advanced then struggling at both the A and A+ levels. Originally a starter in ‘07, he slowly was shifted to relief by 2009, and has been exclusively used at KINSTON in that role for the past two seasons. He projects to the HILLCATS pen at this point.

BEACHY needs to cut down on his pitch to out ratio. He wears himself down by not getting guys out early into counts. Maybe a bit more pitch to contact rather than balls and strikes.
Lew,
I misspoke. Tommy tore his rotator cuff and did not need surgery. But I would think it’s quite obvious that as far as our vets are concerned, there is at least some concern with each–plus Hudson is getting up there.
I hope JJ and Big Red stay healthy, but I wouldn’t bet a lot of $ on it.
Would you?
It’s just too bad we don’t have that one in his prime ace to anchor the rest of the group. Hanson could be that if he slightly turned the corner. Maybe this year.
“BEACHY needs to cut down on his pitch to out ratio. He wears himself down by not getting guys out early into counts. Maybe a bit more pitch to contact rather than balls and strikes.”
Co-Sign and Good Point, Big Red Had that Same Problem as well. The dude was infactuated with the strikeout which leads to both of them having 100 pitches by the middle of the 5th inning…

So why did I mention the Braves? As I stated in that initial post: if it is reasonable for the Braves to take a step forward offensively this year with essentially the same exact line up, then it is just as reasonable to suspect the Reds offense could bounce back.

hm, ok. well i think the 2011 reds WAS their offense “bouncing back”. they regressed to the norm after some players had career years in 2010. if the braves regress to the norm, they will be better. im saying last year was more normal for the reds. we will see though.

“Give it an inning, you’ll think of something.”

Co-Sign and Good Point, Big Red Had that Same Problem as well. The dude was infactuated with the strikeout which leads to both of them having 100 pitches by the middle of the 5th inning…
