Grading the offseason: National League By Jim Bowden
Atlanta Braves – Grade: D+
Key Transactions: Acquired LHP Chris Jones from Cleveland for RHP Derek Lowe and cash; signed SS Jack Wilson, one year, $1 million.
Bowden’s Take
The Braves decided to stay pat, making fewer moves than any team in baseball. However, when a team boasts one of the game’s strongest farm systems and a plethora of young talent on the 40-man roster, the team’s improvement can simply come from within just as much if not more than they could from trades or signing free agents. This deep farm system will help at the July 31 trade deadline to acquire the impact right-handed bat in left field they still currently lack.
Take note BRAVES fans of EPHRIM’s BOWDEN post. Pay particular attention to the fact that a LHP is acquired in the LOWE trade. The rule 5 pickup ROBERT FISH is a lefty. Last year’s get for pitching back-up – FLANDE is a lefty. GILMARTIN and MINOR are both left-handers. Do you see a pattern?
Good news that they are going to pace themselves now, because come April, they are probably going to be needed nearly every single game with this offense.
I think Bowden is correct. Lest we forget, with a rash of injuries, significant offensive slumps, and an over-taxed bullpen, the Bravos still won 89 games. Actually, pretty impressive, given the obstacles.
It would be awfully bad luck for the Braves to slump offensively this season like they did last season. And we can only cross our fingers that key players stay injury-free.
Coach – Cristhian Martinez is on the bubble? Where the hell do you come up with this stuff?
Dude had a 3.36 ERA in almost 78 IP, a WHIP of 0.96, 6.5 H/0, 6.6 K/9 and a 3-1 K to BB rate and went as many as 6 IP in a game.
You do realize that when compared to relievers not named O’Flaherty, Venters or Kimbrel that he put up some pretty damned good numbers and kept us in a lot of games? And why woulkd Asencio make the team and Martinez not, when CM is the long reliever (and Medlen is being considered to start) and Ascensio ain’t?
“Good news that they [relievers] are going to pace themselves now, because come April, they are probably going to be needed nearly every single game with this offense.”
– PMC
Not.
McCann – healthy – hits. Freeman gets even better at the plate. Uggla – freaky if he has an extended slump. Pastornicky – who knows? Chipper – healthy, he hits. Prado – healthy, he hits. Bourn – contract year, he’ll hit and run like Superman. Heyward – too much on the line not to get his act together, though he has to stay healthy.
Dadgum – I’m picking the Fish and the Nats to fight it out for 3rd place, and favoring the Nats if Stras is healthy. Would not surprise me AT ALL for the Marlins to be 4th in the division, unless they pull some pitching out of their , well, you know. Now, if Josh Johnson has a strong comedback, that would be a big help to them.
By the way, I’m not conceeding 1st to the Phillies.
Coach – Cristhian Martinez is on the bubble? Where the hell do you come up with this stuff?
Crowded bullpen. Medlen will probably be long relief. Plus with Vizcaino and maybe even Teheran/Delgado in the pen and Moylan coming back in a month or so, Cristhian isn’t exactly guaranteed a spot.
Nick Lowe was on Marc Maron’s podcast WTF earlier this week talking about his career. If you don’t listen to that podcast you might want to check it out. It was pretty interesting.
It is a crowded bullpen down there, a couple of these guys could be trade candidates in spring training especially if Braves are really considering adding Viz or Teheran to bullpen.
“But it’s also clear that Venters and Kimbrel are learning something about pace and preparation.”
Isn’t that what the coaches are for? Shouldn’t McDowell or Mr. Magoo Fredi Gonzalez have been pacing these guys since it was natural for these young guys to go all out?
FIRE FREDI GONZALEZ!!!
FREDI WOULD RATHER PITCH DEREK LOWE THAN JULIO TEHERAN OR RANDALL DELGADO EVERY FIFTH DAY!!!
[...] wet last year. So this year, they’re taking it a bit easier heading into spring training. From the AJC: It’s easy to suggest their first-half workload is what caused Kimbrel and Venters to struggle [...]
Coach – Cristhian Martinez is on the bubble? Where the hell do you come up with this stuff?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Kimbrel, Venters, O’Flaherty, Medlen and Moylan are pretty much locked in if healthy. Leaving two bullpen spots up for grabs.
Varvaro, Vizcaino, Fish, Asencio and Martinez are in the mix. Fredi Gonzalez also mentioned two weeks ago that either of the top starting pitching prospects, Julio Teheran or Randall Delgado, could begin the season in the bullpen. Then when considering that both Cristhian Martinez and Jairo Asencio are out of options along with Asencio’s outstanding winter league season….Martinez is on the bubble. He’s a great young arm, out of options and no guarantee to make the bullpen. Hell, the Braves could lose Martinez or Asencio in waivers or be forced to trade one of them.
10paul Man, to read this blog one would get the impression that Kimbrel and Venters were “over worked” or “worn out” by the end of the season… DAP? That isn’t true, is it?
nope! top relievers ought to be able to handle a load like that.
Perhaps I missed something, Coach (2012 Fredi’s beisbol fandango). Where do you get that Moylan is “pretty much” locked in? Pete “Major Injury” Moylan? If healthy? I’ll take Martinez over Moylan because Martinez is surer to be healthy and his numbers were good last season. I think Pete is headed for Gwinnett.
Jeffrey d – Considering that their goal this year is to save the back end of the bullpen extra innings and that they are considering Medlen for starting as well as relief, they will need an innings eating long reliever and that’s Martinez. And also let us not forget that Medlen is coming off of surgery and they may not be able to ride him like a draft horse quite yet.
Although I like him as well, I’d say the one on the bubble is Anthony Varvaro. And just because Asencio has no options left and had a good winter, doesn’t negate his poor showing when he was up last year.
Coach – Moylan won’t be ready for the start of the season and is coming off of his third surgery in three years. I think the jury is out on him althogether and – best case scenario – comes back and helps later in the season.
I will say that it is an embarrasment of riches when it comes to our pen. Deep, excellent and the best in baseball. Just not sold on Asencio, though. Options or not, he hasn’t excelled when called up and we’re not even sure who he is.
A lot of talk about the bullpen, but hopefully we don’t need the bullpen as much as we did last year. This team has got to get on base and score runs or the bullpen isn’t going to be able to save this team.
The bullpen can’t score runs. Well unless it’s C-Mart coming out of the bullpen to hit (.833 OPS)
top relievers ought to be able to handle a load like that.
Could you grant a list of “top relievers” who did that, minus of course Kimbrel and Venters, as they fell apart at seasons end due to apparently, a virus, or their family members being held hostage without word getting out to the masses.
jeffrey d Medlen will probably be long relief. Plus with Vizcaino and maybe even Teheran/Delgado in the pen and Moylan coming back in a month or so, Cristhian isn’t exactly guaranteed a spot.
i dont see any way that martinez doesnt get a spot, just like i dont see a way delgado or tehran end up in the bullpen. kimbrel, venters, o’flarety, vizcaino, martinez, medlen. those 6 have their spots, i think. 1 spot up for grabs between guys like fish, varvaro, ascencio, or maybe hoover. guys like that. fish actually probably has the edge because we lose him if he isnt on the team.
Saw Ascencio pitch in a couple of Gwinnet games last year and BJ and the other announcer were raving about him and he looked very impressive to me. Obviously he a has good stuff just needs to take that next step, though its a small step,(about 6 inches between the ears), it’s sometimes the toughest one.

Crowded bullpen. Medlen will probably be long relief. Plus with Vizcaino and maybe even Teheran/Delgado in the pen and Moylan coming back in a month or so, Cristhian isn’t exactly guaranteed a spot.

Well unless it’s C-Mart coming out of the bullpen to hit (.833 OPS)

i dont see any way that martinez doesnt get a spot, just like i dont see a way delgado or tehran end up in the bullpen. kimbrel, venters, o’flarety, vizcaino, martinez, medlen. those 6 have their spots, i think. 1 spot up for grabs between guys like fish, varvaro, ascencio, or maybe hoover. guys like that. fish actually probably has the edge because we lose him if he isnt on the team.

A solid point, but, they don’t necessarily lose him. They must offer him back for $25K. That offer could very well be rejected or passed upon.
Nevertheless, I’d imagine he’d get a thorough viewing this Spring.
