I hope that Freeman and Haywood can come out swinging and keep on developing into dependable hitters.
I believe that the Braves will hit better this year, especially with RISP(heck they almost have to, after last year), hoping so anyway.
I think that their young pitchers are going to develop into strong contenders, and that there will be more than just 3 0r 4 dependable bullpen guys.
I didn’t rate Wren, that was someone else, but I would give him a B to B+, for fielding a competitive team, and raising a good farm crop.
hey jeffrey d, didya wash the j i z z smell outta yer chearleader unifor yet? gonna go back to the spirit fingers this year or ya goin’ back to pom pom’s? don’t forget yer knee pads!
Listen, I’m not an economics teacher and I’m not going to spend my day explaining “supply/demand” to you or DAP. The numbers prove my point, and not just for 2011, but if I were to bother looking up prior years’ attendance figures, I’m sure I’d find much the same. Feel free, yourself, though:
I’d be willing to bet the Mets are thinking they, too, built a stadium too large for their market – and they ARE in New York.
The more intimate fan experience (going to a game where people are actually in seats around you) is the more enjoyable experience. Painting the picture, through the televised game, that the stadium is rocking and that a Braves’ game is an event not to be missed, and that “seating is limited” (ever year that pitched in advertising? It’s done on purpose) creates more urgency to want to be there.
jeffery d, i agree with you, the upper deck seating isnt bad, especially for the price. the skyline seats are pretty far away, but when you get those, you dont sit in your seats. the skyfield over in left field is a cool place to watch the game. i love turner field. actually, i think its underrated.
Murph and McCann – my in-theater movie list is not much better for the year-
1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II
2. Breaking Dawn Part I
3. The Smurfs
4. Alvin and the Chipmunks – Chipwrecked
thanks for the list DOB for those of us who don’t get out much to movies due to kids – now I know which ones to look for on PPV or one of the movie channels
Why, exactly, should Wren trade minor league talent that – obviously – he does not want to let go (likely cause we’ll need them in the future) to get an impact bat when they can get one next year with the extra payroll coming off the books and a much better free agent class to choose from?
Because paying prices for expensive free agents in their 30’s has never really been the Braves way? And because they will still need financial flexibility to pay several young players making arbitration dollars, as well as extending Brian McCann? I think we may get one bat from the free agent market next year, but quite a few guys may re-sign between then and now and the Braves aren’t the only team with a need in CF or LF. I think it’s likely that they go the trade route for a bat next winter.

It also may be true that people that don’t come out during the week and can not get tickets on the weekend because of lass supply might not come at all.

Supply and demand is an economic model of price determination in a market. Jay Dobu – they were paying KK $7 million last year no matter what. The Braves did not release him (and pay him $7million) or pitch him somewhere closer to Atlanta because KK blocked a trade back to Japan which would have gotten him off the Braves hands and saved a few million bucks.
The Braves have no room for Lowe in their rotation and they saved $5 million by trading D.Lowe. The Braves had no desire for a $15 million long reliever or even a $5 million/year non-closer

ron roberts im not an economist either, but i do know a little bit about advertising and media, and i also know alot about how things that work in places like new york, dont work in places like atlanta. the fact that the mets and phillies built smaller stadiums does not support your argument. that doesnt work here, is what im saying. very different cities, different customers, different culture, ect.
not to mention, the braves have had thier huge stadium for almost a decade and a half, and attendance wasnt always a “problem”. (it isnt really much of a problem now).
guys really what’s to argue about, the stadium is clearly too big for the size of the city, and it sits in a lousy location, last year, it has been a while since I’d been and my wife was driving and we followed Turner Field road signage and it led us right back out onto 85! we wound up adding like 20 more minutest to the drive getting back around from the other direction on 85 and all we had done was follow the signs pointing to Turner Field. The stadium being to big in relationship to the population size is perfectly legitimate and coherent, stop being so harsh just because you disagree…

Guys, if our SPs put up more than an average of 5.6 innings a game then we will have a great 2012 with that 4 headed bullpen (tail) and hopefully a stud hitting SS with RF and LF (back to 2010 levels)
predictions: IF we see Heyward come out of spring with the same swing as last year, uh oh…IF Prado gets juggled all year long between 2-3 postions, uh oh…IF JJ doesn’t grow a pair and stop whining about a Barry Bondsesque “sore knee”, uh oh…IF Hanson comes out of spring with that same ridiculous arm motion, uh oh…IF Uggla has a typical year on D with a rookie of dubious defensive skills right next to him, uh oh…IF McCann has to catch more than 130 games and isn’t even skinnier than he was last year in spring training, uh oh…chances of all that happening: pretty good, results: well, let’s hope they finish ahead of the Mets…
Atlanta is not a mid-market. The only thing that makes it so is the words of the Braves’ front office and their approach to the team. This is the #8 or 9 media market in the country, depending on the week. That puts us with DC, Houston, and right behind SF and Boston. Now, Atlanta is a sprawl, and most people live in the suburbs, but in now way is it a mid-market. You want mid-market, go to Raleigh or Pittsburgh.
As to an individual owning the team changing the outlook, I’m not saying it would. Anyone who remembers the Ted Turner of the 80s or Rankin Smith can attest to that. What I am saying is that it might inspire people to renew their passion for the team. Seeing that an individual is committed to a franchise can make people commit as well. That wasn’t a comment about success, it was a comment about support.
I also think that the general perception of all the Atlanta pro teams right now is that they are built merely to make the playoffs, not win championships. And until people believe that the Braves, Falcons or Hawks have any chance of even competing for a championship, fans are going to stay away. Making the playoffs just isn’t enough anymore.
Murph, I dare say yours is the only top 5 TV shows list I’ve ever seen that includes both Boardwalk Empire and My Little Pony.
I have limited resources to draw from.
Used to be a big fan of The Office, but this season has been terrible. So terrible that, even though I’ve been able to watch it, I can’t help but rate it lower than My Little Pony.
Are those new jersey’s yellow? They look yellow to me, but my wife tells me I can’t identify colors well.
Anyway, I don’t want the Braves dressing out in yellow — Skeezix
jeffrey d, you came outta nowhere immediately insulting me without entering the conversation with anything constructive and yet you are taking the “high road”, hmmmm…
Here’s what I said, BFS80….
I sit in those seats all the time and love it. You can see the whole field. I’m not sure what you need binoculars to see, unless you’re wanting to get a close up of someone’s complexion. And they’re cheap
Whew…I sure ripped you a new one! I can completely understand why you’d say jazz with an I.
we followed Turner Field road signage and it led us right back out onto 85! we wound up adding like 20 more minutest to the drive getting back around from the other direction on 85 and all we had done was follow the signs pointing to Turner Field.
Thee has some untruth to it…APD does an excellent job blocking and directing traffic around the stadium. If you are traveling I-85, you almost have to be a maroon to get lost. Exit, and let APD direct you. Not difficult.
jeffrey d, I apologize most humbly and ask for your forgiveness, I would never say anything that rude if it weren’t warranted, I got a little bit of an attack sequence thrown at me, which you were sort of a part of, but in reading back it was some idiot calling himself zwacky who insulted me, once again, sorry for the rude comment, it won’t happen again…
I think that the Braves will contend this year.
Uggla did pretty good fielding his position last year, but the defense probably won’t be as good up the middle this year.
I believe that Prado’s infection hurt him more than anything last year, but his approach at hitting in the 2nd slot needs to improve(if he does bat 2nd).
Hanson’s arm motion isn’t going to change.
I can’t feel JJ’s pain, so I won’t say anything about that, perhaps he can pitch the majority of the year healthy(if he has a good 1st half, I think that he will be traded for a hitter).
McCann will most probably be worn down by the end of the season, but I think that he will contribute greatly, close to the end.
That’s just my opin., but whatever happens, I predict that the Braves will finish ahead of the Metros.
ease, total truth, for whatever reason, there wasn’t much of that done before that game, but plenty afterwards, on the way out, we had not trouble getting back through everything, but being from NC we’re not very familiar with the city anyway which I’m sure doesn’t help…
And by the looks of it, the Braves will have the lowest payroll in the National League East for this upcoming season – although we’re talking a few hundred thousand under the Mets and only a few million under the Nationals and Marlins, depending on how the Fielder situation ends up.
BF80, I am sure it doesn’t help too that Turner Field intersects the two major arteries into and out of the city. That, tackled with rush hour, can make for a confusing drive. I will concede that.
Hey, little kid shows cann be funny! When I had my wisdom teeth out, I saw an episode of PEEP and the Big Wide World and I loved it! Have been watching it on YouTube and even bought a DVD of it…now I’m working on knitting the three main characters…
I always thought the royal blue jerseys with redpiping around white lettering from the early 80’s were the coolest jerseys Atlanta ever wore, I have the hat from those uni’s and wear it more than any other…
BFS80s@2:25……..”there wasn’t much of that done before that game”(i.e. APD directing traffic), maybe they were all responding to a shooting or a robbery in the local neighborhood that day.
BF80’s – You’re actually using Lowe and KK as your argument. Were you watching the Braves in 2008. Did you want to continue with the likes of Buddy Carlyle, Chuck James, Charlie Morton, and JoJo Reyes? A MAJOR overhall of the pitching staff was called for. Lowe was the best pitcher available. (Mets signed Oliver Perez, the second best available). He had to overpay some for Lowe to get him, and we got 2 pretty good years out of him. KK was a reasonable gamble that didn’t work out. He got a great year out of Vazquez (who he also signed, but you didn’t mention), and then worked a pretty successful trade to the Yankees…Vazques had a terrible 2010, by the way.
AS for McLouth, that trade was universally praised. NO ONE, not even a genius like you, could have predicted that Nate would crash and burn.
I had chalked up your comments to a simple difference of opinion…Now I will disreguard your comments as drivel from someone who obviously doesn’t know what they are talking about.
skeeterleg, have you ever been to an MLB game? it ain’t like it used to be in old Fulton County Stadium, there are attendants and personnel EVERYWHERE and the days of slipping closer to the field are all but gone, you get busted pretty quick unless you get really lucky so most people don’t even try that anymore. the argument being made is that the stadium is unrealistically large for the population of the city and if it were x amount smaller, would project better attendance numbers in relation to stadium size…
What I would love far more is if this became the replacement for those ugly as sin blue tops on the road uniforms! And bring back the scarlet red billed caps on the road!
The Giants and Tim Lincecum have agreed to a two-year, $40.5MM contract extension, avoiding arbitration, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports on Twitter.
DAP, the ones I’m talking about are just like that without white sleeves, they only wore ‘em for like two years I think, I’ll look for a picture of one and post it, those in your picture were used for a pretty good while in the 70’s, Hank wore those…
Yes. I go to about 10 or so a year. I’d understand what you were saying if the seats were far away from the field(like Fulton County), but they aren’t. SO what does it matter if the stadium is 8 miles across as long as you can sit close and see well…which you can. I don’t get the logic that tearing a few seats out will make make more people come.
Whatever happened to four year contracts? Teams have little control anymore. It seems like its either 7 or 8 years for a good player or they take one year for something astronomical.
Nationals are now officially better than the Braves with the Fielder. I don’t like the guy one bit, but he is the definition of “run producer”. Phillies/Nationals/Braves is how I see the east. Marlins could be serious threats to the Phillies as well.

The stadium being to big in relationship to the population size is perfectly legitimate and coherent, stop being so harsh just because you disagree…

predictions: IF we see Heyward come out of spring with the same swing as last year, uh oh…IF Prado gets juggled all year long between 2-3 postions, uh oh…IF JJ doesn’t grow a pair and stop whining about a Barry Bondsesque “sore knee”, uh oh…IF Hanson comes out of spring with that same ridiculous arm motion, uh oh…IF Uggla has a typical year on D with a rookie of dubious defensive skills right next to him, uh oh…IF McCann has to catch more than 130 games and isn’t even skinnier than he was last year in spring training, uh oh…chances of all that happening: pretty good, results: well, let’s hope they finish ahead of the Mets…

Thee has some untruth to it…APD does an excellent job blocking and directing traffic around the stadium. If you are traveling I-85, you almost have to be a maroon to get lost. Exit, and let APD direct you. Not difficult.
