Another issue that complicates the Hall of Fame voting as it relates to steroids and PED’s is that we’ll never know for sure which players used and which players did not. And there are sure to be some that get in that used. Maybe we’ll find out they used and maybe we won’t.
The response by some voters is to keep players out that look like they used, like a Jeff Bagwell, without any sort of evidence that they indeed used PED’s.
Then what is going to happen when the voters vote someone in and it comes out, after he’s already in, that he used PED’s?
The whole thing is just going to turn the Hall of Fame into more of an absurdity than it is already. If the overwhelming indication is that a player would have been a Hall of Famer, with or without PED’s, let him in. If a player is barely above the standards and he used PED’s, and there is reason to believe PED’s pushed him over the line, don’t let him in.
I think we want to over-do the outrage over PED’s in large part because extremely basic statistics overshadow how many of us judge players. Bonds broke the homerun record but he used PED’s, so his record means less. Well, when it comes down to it, who cares about very basic statistical records anyway? What it should come down to is what a player was worth in terms of wins, contributions that increase his team’s chances to win. An extremely crude and basic statistical record shouldn’t be the basis for Hall of Fame enshrinement anyway. Statheads get criticized for using in-depth statistics. But if more people would get beyond really basic, crude statistics and dig deeper into what the game is really about and what really leads to wins, we wouldn’t need statheads.
No one would argue that PED’s were a good thing and that baseball should have continued to turn a blind eye and players should have continued using. But how many of us do harmful things to get by? How many of the same writers who vote for the Hall of Fame, also rush around and live on diets of coffee, soda and fast food in order to write that best stories possible. How many of us load up on cold meds when we aren’t feeling well, to get us through a long day at the office? But we are going to judge players who tried to get an edge as cheaters lacking character and integrity? How many of us would dabble into something that would give us an edge if it meant a little more fame, fortune, winning? The writers have decided to apply standards to the Hall of Fame that they themselves wouldn’t meet if they were in a similar position or haven’t met throughout their lives and in their line of work.
Is the game ruined if Bonds, Clemens, McGwire, Bagwell, etc. get into the Hall of Fame? If so, the game was already ruined when they were allowed to have 15-20-year careers. We should hold it against players because they have the same shortcomings as most of the rest of us?
What is it all about? Is it about setting an example for the kids? Because I don’t know many players, PED users or not, that I would want my kids to look up to. Is it about ethical standards? Because most of us don’t and wouldn’t live up to the standards we’ve set for players. I just don’t know what keeping PED users out of the Hall of Fame solves for baseball.
ChattTownBrian (CTB), nah. I just like to go back and forth with people who are stubborn in their own views but can’t seem to back them up with anything other than, “everyone else thinks this way.”
So is a guy like Dale Murphy penalized then because he was the best player on the worst team? I’m just using him as an example, not opening this up to a debate on his HoF credentials… in fact, forget I said Murphy. Let’s say the player’s name was Merle Dunphy. And Merle’s stats are good enough when compared to other HoF inductees who played the same position, only his team lost 100 games multiple times during his career.
Should Merle’s HoF credentials be put in question because he played for a losing team?
So, for the forseeable future, the Braves will be kept by Liberty Media, will spend the next two decades not benefitting from a crappy local TV deal done pre-Liberty (thanks, Time-Warner, for another brilliant screw-job!), so say nothing of the fact that Liberty will take a cost-effectiveness approach to setting payroll for as long as they own the Braves.
I just like to go back and forth with people who are stubborn in their own views but can’t seem to back them up with anything other than, “everyone else thinks this way.”
y’all do know what a contract means, right? the whole idea is that you can’t back out unless something untoward occurs. what in the world makes you think there should be a way out?”We was dumdums when we signed it” is seldom a valid reason for getting out of one
Writers get paid to explain what is going on with teams, explain what happened in last night’s game, get the scoop on the latest free agent signings or trades, etc. — Shaun
DOB, got that? — Ease in Sandy Springs
Yep, I’ll pass it along to the other beat writers. Shaun has defined duties today for all of those inside baseball, as well those of us who cover the industry. Now we can move forward into a new season without any confusion. Whew.
Murph, I assume your last post is in reference to my point that the game is not about crude, basic stats but about what a player did to add wins, increase his team’s chances to win.
No, what a player does to add to his team’s chances has little to do with his team’s win total because he may play on a very bad team. This is something that comes into play often in the MVP voting. Many voters think a player can’t be most valuable if his teammates were not very good. Hall of Fame enshrinement is about the individual player and what he did, just like the MVP is an individual award. It’s crazy to judge a player on the basis of how good or bad his teammates were.
If Murphy played as well and contributed as much as Jim Rice (and there is evidence that he did), why punish Murphy because his teammates weren’t as good most seasons?
*Murphy had 44.2 WAR while Rice had 41.5. Murphy also had more seasons of 5 WAR or more.
It’s insane how people address me and criticize me, instead of actually responding to the issues with a reasonable argument. This is how I know many of you just don’t get it.
It’s not about making your case and presenting a strong argument from your side of things. It’s about sticking it to, criticizing and making fun of Shaun. That’s how I know you have no where else to go and you’ve lost the debate.
y’all do know what a contract means, right? the whole idea is that you can’t back out unless something untoward occurs.
Contracts get renegotiated every day. It happens. Usually for a better reason than “well, the Angels have a good contract and we want one too” but it still happens.
The Nationals built in a check every 5 years to make sure their TV deal is competitive. Doubt the Braves did that. The Dodgers just tried to renegotiate their deal with FOX but it was rejected by Selig.
If it would take $50mil in legal fees but net the team $500mil over the next however many years… well, I’m no economist but that seems like an easy decision to me.
Shaun, I just ran a couple of errands, drove through rush-hour traffic back from Piedmont Road to my house, etc., and I see you’re still somehow managing not just to rant and rave and spend a third of a work day going on about a subject (the HOF) that you insist is nothing but a “joke” to you, you’ve actually lengthened your soliloquies to a mind-numbing eight paragraphs (5:14 p.m.). That’s about 6-7 more paragraphs than most of us are going to bother reading at this point, but it deserves an A for effort.
You don’t play well with others, but definitely an A for effort (if not effectiveness).
The Dodger deal (which is back on, by the way) was not about contracts. Selig rejected it mainly because Frank McCourt was going to use the upfront money to pay off his divorce settlement and various other personal debts. Selig didn’t like that idea
I love it that the last few seasons McCann has been voted in the top three in defensive catcher but guys like MF04 keep repeating that same old “bad catcher” crap. He is as good as most defensively, and better than almost all on offense. Pretty sure he will stick around a while
The interview with Mc Guirk set some light on the direction that we can expect from the Braves not only for the forseable future but for another 20 years. Wow!!!!
And there is no forseeable hope that we will be rid of corporate ownership.
We are already at mediocrity, but in a short time, a 90 or so million payroll will be in the bottom third in a few yrs with other teams negotiating better TV deals than the Braves.
I see little hope and even if the far mystem does great, they will only keep these guys for so long. If they ever win anything it will be because they are lucky. No way they compete over the long haul, if you do not think that this is not a competitive disadvantage, you are believing fools gold.
At least we heard some perspective from their side as trite and unlikable as it is.
Hey, I can’t wait 20 yrs, so I am a MLB fan. Poor Braves fans, dial one eight hundred U R Screwed.
I will go to some games to support MLB in this city but I cannot really be a heartned fan of this team anymore. What ever happens happens. Just hope the best team wins whoever it will be.
I want to start a new HOF. Ryan Seacreast to host a show, The Tango Hall O’ Fandango. Players are voted in by calling a phone number on the screen. Callers are selected by submitting to extensive psychological tests to prove their analytical abilities. “Why don’t you like Siamese cats?”
At the induction ceremony, Bud Selig, callers and the players not voted in, will have a large cocktail party with hidden cameras and microphones. “I’ll show you bias, Mother——-!”
A true HOF with a demographic reach fit for a TV Network.
cab, that’s interesting… gotta love McCourt. Or hate him.
Regardless of why it was rejected, though, the fact remains that the deal was renegotiated… right? I’m not trying to be snarky, I don’t know enough about their deal to say it was an actual reworking of an existing deal or something else.
I don’t play well with others when the others can’t make a coherent and reasonable arguments, and instead bash me or simply accept that the voters are correct simply because they are the BBWAA.
It’s insane how people address me and criticize me, instead of actually responding to the issues with a reasonable argument. This is how I know many of you just don’t get it. — Shaun

business contracts get renegotiated only if both sides are interested in doing so. why would the TV station be willing to pay more money than they have to when they already have a guarantee that they will get what they want at the already existing price? sheeesh,
Sounds like the deal is expiring, but FOX had exclusive negotiating rights for 45 days:
” That contract gives Fox an exclusive 45-day period starting in October to try to negotiate a contract extension with the Dodgers. The contract also prohibits the Dodgers from talking to other potential buyers of the media rights before Nov. 30 and gives Fox a limited right of first refusal on competing offers received after that date.”
Bethancourt at C and Simmons at SS. Two automatic outs, yet defensive wizards. I bet they’d last a week with folks around here.
In CHRISTIAN’s case prolly.
But in AL’s case, I would put up the stop sign, and say I was most impressed with his development in A+ this season, and said so on numerous occasions. The strength I like most about him is his ability to listen, and apply what he’s heard from coaching. If you will note at the end of 2011’s season, I said his AB/H and BB/SO ratios improved significantly over the course of last season as his BA improved from .304 in the first half to .319 the second. This kid is not just holding on, and wishing and hoping. He’s accelerating his level of improvement. Maybe AA will knock him back a peg or two, but I wouldn’t want to bet on it. I wish I had eye-balled him last season in LYNCHBURG. That’s not a mistake I’m going to make again, God willing.
Get ready PEARL RIVER, thunder [SIMMONS], and lightning [TERDOSLAVICH] are coming to JACKSON-town.
Mc Cann owes it to himself to get the best deal possible, gone are the days we keep the Chippers, the Smoltz’s and seeing Andreuw sign a 6 yr deal for a hooetown discount.
The future is that we are a future farm system for the big market team.
Thanks alot TIme Warner. This one you cannot blame Liberty on. I am glad some light is shed on this and a different owner might not do much better,.

I see you carry the heavy burden of enlightment which most here lack. You’re wasting your talent belaboring these carping misanthropes.
why would the TV station be willing to pay more money than they have to when they already have a guarantee that they will get what they want at the already existing price? sheeesh,
The Braves get a certain amount of money from Peachtree in exchange for their television rights. Peachtree then sells advertising time as a main source of their income. I don’t know this for a fact, but I’d guess that ratings (and revenues) are lower when a team is 62-100 than when that same team is 100-62. Less people tuning in equals less ad revenue for the network.
As I mentioned earlier, the Braves could also do things to sweeten the deal for the contract holder to help ease the pain of renegotiating the deal. And no, I’m not talking coupons for free hot dogs for all Peachtree staff members.
Well Dave, its pretty hopeless that the Braves will be the franchise that they once were. At least for another 20 yrs.
Good luck Texas, Miami and the LA Angels.
At least I am not one of those yelling for people to boycott he games but a slow start like 2006 or 08 and would not be surprised to see the attendance go to 1.8 and that would worsen things.
I hope that does not happen, but……….
The baseball universe across the South is being invaded with locusts and posionous frogs. LOL.
Shaun, why are you obsessing with the HOF and the process to get there? (OK, stupid question) You have some compelling arguments but that is not going to change how the writers vote. In general, life is not fair. We all have to be held accountable to higher standards because of the folks who take advantage of people and or situations. Personally, I would like to see them change, what appears to be the PED standards, to apply to those who tested positive after they were deemed illegal. But I don’t have a say and can accept whatever happens because there are things in life that are far more important.
And as for your opinion on the stats and what you believe to be the real measurements for a baseball player. The basic stats used have been around as long as baseball and are a huge part of the game. They are easy for everyone to understand and a huge part of the history. So unless you expect MLB to start playing 5 inning games or 100 game seasons, you shouldn’t expect them to start a new measuring system just for numbers geeks. Most of the other stats are neat but not necessary for the average fan.
sounds like J.D Drew will retire wish we could get him cheap could be a great pickup he batted well in Atlanta. He only wants to play part time but I think he could slide into full time if anyone falters this year.
It’s insane how people address me and criticize me, instead of actually responding to the issues with a reasonable argument. This is how I know many of you just don’t get it
Hasn’t the entire blog responded to Shaun and refuted his points with evidence? Is he not seeing those?
Sheesh….this guy makes Mitchell say “Give it up, man!”
(Robert Hegyes, the Jersey-born actor who played Jewish Puerto Rican wheeler-dealer Juan Luis Pedro Phillipo de Huevos Epstein on the 1970s classic “Welcome Back Kotter,” died from an apparent heart attack after suffering chest pains at his Metuchen home this morning. He was 60.)
I step away from the blog for a day and I read some of this stuff and my head is simply spinning. I won’t even comment on all of the HOF stuff, enough said. But how do we according to some, have become mediocrity and the future is completely doom and gloom. May be some people have stood outside in the rain too long today.
Reading through the Prospect Handbook – RHP’s J.J. Hoover, J.R. Graham, Cody Martin and Navery Moore all relievers in the 12-20 range in the BA Prospect Handbook. Seems like they believe Martin may have a better chance to stick in the rotation than Graham, which is pretty interesting. RHP Billy Bullock also listed in there at #24, Erik Cordier at #26, Cory Gearrin at #29, both right handers as well. Lots of relief prospects.
richbrave, I’m sure that Shaun is waiting for you to give us better stats on the guys in the minors.
I doubt that. The level of enlightment SHAUN has should dictate that he has abilities to divine the gems amongst our minor leaguers without any guidance from me.
jfp: The mental side is there with Pastornicky, nothing to worry about in that regard. The rest, we just have to wait and see. Had a real nice season in 2011, though, and thrived in Triple-A before his ankle injury. Still, let’s see how he does against big-league pitching as spring training progresses and then, presumably, when the season begins.
Are you surprised at McGuirk finally giving a team salary amount for 2012? I know that you have been asking that question for a few years with no real answers given.
It seems strange to keep those numbers quiet for so long and then announce a specific number.
DOB, thanks. This is probably one of the best off seasons in which the Braves seem to do the least on the surface. But sometimes the best deals you make are the ones you don’t make.
I think Pastornicky is going to win over a lot of fans. I think its going to be a safe bet that he is going to run out every ball put in play, he is going to give it full hungry effort. And with just a little bit of success, the kid is going to win over a lot of fans.
I do think it is ia bit worrisome that analysts other than Braves are still saying it is more likely that he will be a sub. that has been the consensus all along outside of Bravesland

Fingers crossed. The BRAVES are not known for patient development once they’re convinced a young man can handle the job.
The Braves are going to do exactly what I predicted in November of last year. They are going to wait and see if the young guns are going to work out. I know they had more money to spend and the ability if needed to, to free up more for a trade or two.
Spring Training is going to be exciting this year for the Braves. All the answer to these questions should be answered then.

I think it was a preemptive strike at fan unhappiness with payroll. The reasonable estimates here were not far off at all. I think much of it was about setting up the excuse for future payroll levels

As much as I would love to see my grandson as a pro and in a BRAVES uni, I certainly wouldn’t try to steer him away from BORAS’ organization if that’s what he wanted. You just can’t argue with the results. It’s strictly business after all, and BORAS is very good at what he does.
I don’t Care about the Money Bora sshole gets its The Years of the deals he gets teams to sign…Unless You are WhineBrenner or the Red Sox, Those Stoopid long term deals can set Franchises back years if they go bad. Look at The Jayson Werthless Deal, Among others over the last 10 years

Oh I’m with you all right. I do think those retirement contracts really hurt if too lengthy. Our latest one is costing us 10 mill this season.

Interesting discussions today on the old blog.
In terms of the HOF, I would love to have specific statistical levels that players have to achieve before they can get into the HOF.
To me, you add a third way to get into the HOF. Guys whose stats are above certain levels get in automatically.
The next group would be the writers doing their vote like they do now.
The final group would be the Veterans Committee.
If you have the stats and were not found to be cheating while you were playing by MLB, then you are in.

Seems like they believe Martin may have a better chance to stick in the rotation than Graham, which is pretty interesting.
