DOB – it is amazing to see the power of your word for many of us here. A post from you saying good post or that you agree can has us walking tall, but a post cutting on us can make us feel like idiots. Then again there are some people who seem not to care about acting like idiots…
swisher, ethier, upton, quentin all seem like possibilities.
B.J. Upton is probably going to command too much money. If he has a good year, I could see teams overpaying for him – especially given the amount of teams who could potentially need a CF. If Ethier gets back to hitting 25 home runs, he’s going to command a 5-6 year deal for 15 million or more per year, I think.
However, I do think we might have interest in Swisher. And I think he’ll be in the 3-4 years, 11 or 12 millon dollars per year range. Wren may be willing to do that to get his bat in LF. Last three seasons for Swisher: .267/.368/.486, 122 OPS+.
Guys, I’m late to the party here, so I want to know who are ya’ll talking about about Dave wanting them to stay? I’m confused cus I went over all his posts this morning and …?? Nuthin
I think Ethier is worth closer to $9-$10 million, but I’m not totally sold on him either. But I agree that some team will probably overpay for him, and I’m betting it won’t be the Dodgers new ownership. With Kemp locked up, they will (or should be) looking to go after a guy like Votto

cab, I agree. He can’t hit LHP, at all. He’ll be playing somewhere else in 2013.
I think Hamilton is really the only position player guaranteed to be locked up prior to free agency next year. Perhaps Matt Cain, for starters. Cole Hamels won’t be pitching in Philly after this year, imo – and I’ll be rooting hard for that.
Rumors have been circulating out here that Hamels will be one of the targets for the new Dodgers owners. He’s a Southern California native and people seem to think (rightly, in my opinion) that the Dodgers will have plenty of money to spend. They new guys will want to make a big splash, especially with the Angels going all out and taking away so much of the attention

Not sure what the debate was but fine, I lose, I am a looser and I am sure there are many here will back it up (ah the humility). Still think you were a baton twirler in high school.
So, you’re saying, pay a ton of money for season tickets, bring the food and beverage prices down to where they SHOULD be for everyone? And doesn’t include beer? Does the marketing department get the fact that gimmicks don’t draw fans… MAKING THE PLAYOFFS and not flopping at the end of the season DRAWS FANS, not gimmick discounts. Look at what the Giants did. On their FB, they’ve already announced a really nice giveaway (https://www.facebook.com/ajax/sharer/?s=2&appid=2305272732&p%5B0%5D=43225541827&p%5B1%5D=9336886). Braves need to follow suit for things people like to get. How about another bobblehead series? Or some really nice giveaways? OR HOW BOUT JUST MAKING THE PLAYOFFS AND WINNING ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP!?!?! GIMMICKS DON’T WORK IN ATLANTA!!!!!
You are not alone. Signing Cespedes to anything close to what he is supposedly asking is way too big of a risk in my mind. And it’s not even so much the money as the idea that he wants 6-8 years. No way I invest that much that soon to someone that has only played in the Cuban leagues and against not so great WBC competition. But you and I and everyone else knows that some team will do it…
I thought ol’ Ron was handled a little rough for what he brought yesterday. But, I remember the history of Captain Calabash, and anybody with that history’ll be treated similarly.
As to the main argument, I stayed quiet ’cause I’ve never been to Turner Field, and don’t know its layout or orientation well. But, I remember Braveheart saying the same thing a couple years back, and I find when I disagree with Braveheart, I’m usually wrong.
I think tearing down that upper deck area could make sense, if it showed off the downtown skyline. But, then you arrive at Ron’s objector’s very real issue that the whole thing is probably cost-prohibitive.
I guess I’m sayin’: Ron was an ass in the past. Reap what you sow, and all that. Also, that it’s increasingly clear ‘OB doesn’t hardly read the comments anymore. The occasional skim, is all (understandably). But, following this mess from an occasional skim is impossible.
Ease, I believe that Shaun was debating the merits of Hank Aaron being in the HoF, saying something to the effect that Hammerin’ Hank didn’t belong because he wasn’t of the same character as Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb.
Murph – I think it had to do with their character. And that if Bonds wasn’t voted for (becuase of the ‘roids), then you had to apply the same standards to Ruth and Cobb. Some kind of crap like that.
Speaking of stadium gimmicks and Cespedes, how about this. Sign Cespedes and the first 500 people through the gate each game get to be clear jumped by the Cuban.
Ease, “rebuttal” implies an opportunity to refute a previously stated position. Shaun does not allow refutation, and thus he cannot be “debated”.
All of that’s OK with me, anyhow. If you don’t get sucked into The Shaun Vortex, you do not have to endure the Chinese-water-torture repetition of his posts. You can read the one, realize that it’s probably something said many times before, get that cozy feeling that the world is in its place, and move forward.
Rather than debate the validity of your grievance with me, I’d like to once again point out that the top of your head looks like an old chimpanzee’s ball sack.
This is obviously the ramblings of someone who feels inadequate about his own intelligence compared to the intelligence of whom he is making fun of. Either that, or this person is incapable of rational thought required for intelligent discourse. Or, could be a bit of both.
Ease, I believe that Shaun was debating the merits of Hank Aaron being in the HoF, saying something to the effect that Hammerin’ Hank didn’t belong because he wasn’t of the same character as Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb.
…this is further evidence that he is incapable of rational thought.
The Hall of Fame argument was about those voters who apply the “character and integrity” clause. That clause has never been applied until, all of the sudden, PED’s became and issue. All of the sudden now voters want to apply the clause. They didn’t want to apply the clause for drunks, cheats and racists, but they want to apply it for PED users.
I don’t think the Hall of Fame voters should be in the position of moralists. If a player is eligible and he performed to the standards of the Hall of Fame, the player should be in the Hall.
It doesn’t mean that PED’s shouldn’t be taken into account. If a player is borderline or slightly better and that player used PEDs, and a voter thinks PED’s helped push him into Hall of Fame territory, I can understand not voting for that player. That’s different than saying a PED user shouldn’t be in because PED users are less moral than other Hall of Famers who had their own moral failings.
This is obviously the ramblings of someone who feels inadequate about his own intelligence compared to the intelligence of whom he is making fun of.
Bizarre, I totally understood it to be a comparison of a chimps rear-end (which is not pretty by any stretch of the imagination) to that of a balding head. Maybe I just read that wrong.
In all seriousness, things do get a bit tense here from time to time. I’ve said some things I’m not proud of, myself…usually due to a perceived attack of a personal nature, or a misunderstanding.
It would be better if we could all keep it civil. I love a good discussion, but hate an argument.
DAP, I saw your position yesterday. And, I saw Bat reinforce your point that just ’cause folks can’t get in on Sunday, doesn’t guarantee they’ll be there Monday. Both y’all were persuasive.
But, I don’t think it’s an issue so black/white that we can’t bicker over a little grey. You mockingly call him a genius in your first response, and it’s off to the races. I though he made a couple of cogent, if overly long posts. Shame it devolved the way it did.
But, for a guy with his history to start throwing out “keyboard jockeys” and this:
“Drivel like that is what keeps me from chiming in on this thread very often, anymore; the inmates run the asylum too much for coherent discussion to carry the day.”
Well, that’s just a whole lot of pot/kettle right there.
The fact that I’m the focus of posts instead of building an argument and a rationale against my positions when you disagree is a sign that you can’t intelligently refute my positions. You just have to move to criticism of me or making fun of me instead of addressing the positions and why you disagree. I guess that is what our Jersey Shore, Jerry Springer, Ricki Lake, trash culture has taught us over the last 15-20 years. You don’t have to make intelligent, convincing arguments with evidence and reason to win people to your side. You just have to make fun of people, criticize people and convince people you are cooler. Anti-intellectualism and trash is a big part of our culture these days. I’m optimistic because I think eventually things like reason and evidence and thought will make a comeback. I see flickers of it in our culture. But we aren’t quite there yet.
Anti-intellectualism and trash is a big part of our culture these days. I’m optimistic because I think eventually things like reason and evidence and thought will make a comeback. I see flickers of it in our culture. But we aren’t quite there yet.
And what part of our culture is the one in which someone states the same position over and over and over and over again, often when nobody is even refuting him, and then ignores or belittles the few who make reasonable counters to his repetitive posts?
I find it kinda funny (in a hahaha sort of way) that the ad at the top of my page is about the Marietta Facial Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics Center regarding hair loss. Not saying anything by it just point out the irony.
Cheating on your wife, drinking, and being an a** are not against the law. Using PEDs is. Big difference.
So it drinking and driving, yet I’m not hearing anyone say they will fight to keep LaRussa out of the Hall. The argument isn’t a legal/illegal issue. Maybe against the rules of the game, but that is separate from the law.
I think we’ll look into free agent outfielders next year, however if Heyward has a strong year, then I think Wren will consider an extension for him as well as McCann. Perhaps Freeman too. Contractual control of some of our many arbitration eligibles would be a good idea – if it makes sense, of course.
I don’t believe I rambled at all, in fact, quite to the contrary. I was very blunt and to the point when I compared your hair coverage with that of a dead monkey’s scrote.
As many have mentioned, getting into a debate with you is not in the least bit desirable. I know you’d like to think that it’s because people can’t debate you, but it’s not that. It’s because people choose not to debate you.
So, while my responses to you may seem immature or lacking in intelligence, they have had the desired effect. I have and will continue to get under your skin, to make the blog a place of torment and ridicule for you every time you return.
Ease, pretty easy to be “full of yourself” when quite a few others who comment are simply making fun of others, criticizing and are not adding anything intelligent. Many take their cue from the worst of the sports talk radio crowd and things like Jerry Springer, Ricki Lake and Jersey Shore. That’s what wins the day with a certain group of people. Eventually the chickens will come home to roost and reason, evidence, logic will win out and the trash will be given its proper place in discourse and will be accepted as what it is.
I should have said the rules of the game. I agree that the voters should not be “morality” police, simply because the Hall of Fame should only be about on field performance. But PEDs ARE illegal in baseball and do affect on field performance, therefor, to me, are fair game when one is voting on a player’s candidacy.
Ease, I can’t take you seriously without the trademarked location. It’s like some lazy impostor has taken over. Doesn’t post enough, no location… C’mon, man.
think we’ll look into free agent outfielders next year, however if Heyward has a strong year, then I think Wren will consider an extension for him as well as McCann. Perhaps Freeman too.
I’m sure Wren would consider it. But they players would have to be willing to consider it also, and a player of Heyward’s pedigree might decide that he’s willing to take his chances on making it to the free agent market.
I guess that is what our Jersey Shore, Jerry Springer, Ricki Lake, trash culture has taught us over the last 15-20 years
Because we’re all huge Jerry Springer fans on here (maybe Tomahawkin)
I think we’ve laid out the argument pretty clearly – they were proven to use performance enhancers to give them an edge over other players. Hence, their numbers are tainted. Cheating on your wife doesn’t give you a competitive advantage (that I know of)
“Eventually the chickens will come home to roost and reason, evidence, logic will win out and the trash will be given its proper place in discourse and will be accepted as what it is.”
Uh… We’re still talking America, right? The U.S. version?
I’ve been a braves fan since they moved to Atlanta, but lived in Atlanta only twice in that time span – once finishing school in the late 70’s – early 80’s (when they weren’t too good), and later from ‘94-’03… when I was in college, you could get in for three bucks and pick a seat after the 3rd inning… concessions were reasonable…We went to the games A LOT…
Next go-round, I wanted to go as much, and was even making decent money, thinking I’d be able to… Last game I went to I had a ticket given to me by a friend and still spent sixty bucks… Concessions, parking, etc., etc. are TOO EXPENSIVE, especially for a sport with so many games… Most just can’t afford it…

Cespedes has now established legal residency in the Dominican Republic. So, I guess he will be the next big FA signing.
I know I’m in the minority, but I don’t see dropping millions on this guy not knowing what he can do in MLB.
And the Darvish signing is just plain stupid. He only impacts the game every five days, and we don’t know what that impact will be. He is not Koufax.

I think we’ll look into free agent outfielders next year, however if Heyward has a strong year, then I think Wren will consider an extension for him as well as McCann. Perhaps Freeman too.
