The reason why attendance declined is because fans saw collapse after collapse in the 90s-00s and no one was held accountable. Biggest loser in Fielder deal, other than MILW: the Reds. Joey Votto now in line for $250 million-range deal after 2013. Good luck with that.
Yup. Votto will be the star of that free agent class.
So, who’s left to bid on Votto in 2013? Seattle and the Nats? Do the Cubs boost payroll by then? Seems that most of the teams with that kind of cash are covered at first.
I don’t believe Fielder would have gotten the contract he received if Victor Martinez had not gotten hurt. Perfect storm for Boras who had not had a good off season up until then.
Lew – “if” Cuban owns the Dodgers in 2013, consider them favorite in the Votto hunt.
Man, just read the overnight post. A few sparks flying last night.
And I missed the Tom and CABrave Show!
But I did spot a couple of members of the Numbnutz Club.
Off the top of my head, I think Votto, Lincecum, and Ellsbury will headline the 2014 free agent class. Can’t really think of anyone else significant, though I’m sure MLBTraderumors will be coming out with that list within the next few months.
It’s always fun to read the other teams’ message boards after a giant deal or FA signing. My comparative unscientific study concludes that there is a core of fans who are convinced that:
1. Their manager is an idiot who doesn’t want to win and just draws a check to be liked by their players
2. Their General Manager hates the fans and wants to lose as much money as possible.
3. The organization is mean not to spend more money than they have.
4. Their players are all terrible and should be cut or traded for players with similar stats but are somehow better than the ones we already have.
5. Tickets, parking and concessions cost more than Newt Gingrich’s consulting fees, but they should still spend millions on a 39 year old superstar who hit 93 home runs ten years ago.
6. I feel better reading other team’s message boards than my team’s message board.
Efrim – No doubt he’ll have suiitors – I was just not sure who was left that didn’t have a good firstbaseman AND had money. Lots of variables before then, I would imagine. Not so sure we’d see the Giants fork over that kind of cash, though.
I think there will be plenty of teams with money to make a strong offer for Votto. Reds don’t have a chance to keep him, imo. But they are doing the right thing in going for a World Series title over the next two years.
And I can’t imagine that V-Mart has a future with the Tigers beyond 2012. He’s owed 26 million 2013-2014, and he can’t catch at this stage of his career. I don’t see Miggy Cabrera being able to handle 3rd base long term, so it’ll probably mean they will be selling off V-Mart next offseason and probably having to eat some of that dough to get any sort of value back.
Braves front office: Please leave the uniform alone. Take that replica jersey away, along with the red alternate (looks like Dairy Queen) and blue alternate with it. Spend your time putting a competitive team on the field and you’ll have a return of the fans. This slashing of concessions does not reach the average fan, so a lot of smoke and mirrors there. Stop the gimmick approach and get back to fielding a winning team.

Prospects emerging from winter
Near-big league ready prospects who were helped by a strong offseason showing
By Kevin Goldstein
Baseball Prospectus
Christian Bethancourt, C, Atlanta Braves
Bethancourt is one of the best defensive catchers in the game, if not the best. His arm is a pure 80 with one scout reporting a pop time of 1.68, the best he’s ever recorded in his decade-plus of work. Offensively, the 20-year-old Panamanian has been a mixed bag, hitting for a decent average but showing little in the way of power or patience.
The approach still needs work, but after hitting five home runs in 72 Arizona Fall League at-bats, there’s hope that the raw power might come around, and the Braves hope he can show enough this spring to earn a Double-A assignment.
I think Bethancourt should of been higher on the Baseball America prospects list. He came in at #9 behind Zeke Spruill….. I’d bet Goldstein and Law, who value upside more, will rate him higher on their lists.
Pretty big deal with PF headed to the Tigers, not WSH. Good, didn’t need that, though I still don’t think it’d have put them over us. It’d have made them a lot better though. LaRoche just doesn’t scare anybody.
Teheran, Vizcaino, Delgado and then 4-8 is probably a toss up – Simmons, Bethancourt, Salcedo, Pastornicky and Gilmartin. Probably a big drop off after that with Lipka, Drury, Ahmed, Milligan, Terdoslavich, Cunningham, My. Jones and La Stella for hitters. Spruill, Hoover, Carlos Perez, J.R. Graham, Cody Martin for pitchers.
There was some talk about the Blues Brothers last night, has anyone seen “The Last of the Blonde Bombshells”? Judi Dench plays an old lady thinking back to her days in a all girl swing band in London during WWII, and decides to “get the band back togerher”. Sort of like the Blues Brothers meet the Golden Girls. I loved it.
It’s actually a little sick how many prospects Atlanta has called up in the last three years (counting 2012). Very young ML team.
Also, in order to bring folks over (even on short contracts at the trade deadline), Braves have sent a lot of prospects out the door through trade.
Hopefully, Braves will start restocking their minors this year so that some folks are ready to take over when some of the current Braves are ready to go to Free Agency.
Although, if the Braves lock up McCann, Heyward, Freeman, Hanson, Prado, some of the young pitchers, to extensions, they might not need alot of replacements at those positions for more than six years.
cheap ass owners forces the organization to rely very heavily on prospects panning out. If they do not you have a mess on your hands. Attendance isn’t as big if a deal as some of you think when it comes to payroll. Must have an owners or owners willing to spend their moneys on the product. Attendance is a small little piece to this issue. I realize somebody needs to point the finger and attendance is an easier target than high up, cheap owners, but those are the facts. So stop with the attendance argument once and for all. MLB attendance is down across the board anyways.

I call shenanigans. Everything I’ve said is that they are drastically underestimating the time that this type of injury takes to recover from, and he could be out till June.
Also with Puhols and Fielder out of the NL the National Fan Vote will be a lot heavier for Votto and Howard than for Freeman. IMO. He doesn’t have the national press as much as those two do.
Re: Attendance and salary and the contracts being given out – LIke they just said on XM Home Plate – wait seven or eight years and see if mid level teams are in better shape, or teams like the Tigers and Angels who are paying $30 mil a year for the production of someone who makes $5 mil.
And y’all think Chipper’s pay vs. performance is bad now? Wait until Prionce and Albert are putting up the same numbers (or less) making twice the money. Unless they have four or so WS Titles in thei respective cities by then, there will be some pissed fans.
Opening day and end of April… that’s a big gap in their estimation.
Missing 1/6th of the season may not sound like much, but it’s kind of a big deal. Knowing that he’s trying to spin this to make it sound like Howard is strong like bull, go ahead and add another couple of weeks and you’re looking at mid May before Howard is back in the lineup and performing with any consistency.
Every little bit helps, but if the Phillies play like they did last year when they had guys go down to injury, 6 weeks without Howard won’t impact them much.
Saw Braves minor league CF Todd Cunningham double and make a great catch in an Arizona Fall League game, came away impressed. Now I see he has other talents: Check out this video the would-be rapper and some friends put out a couple of days ago:
Also with Puhols and Fielder out of the NL the National Fan Vote will be a lot heavier for Votto and Howard than for Freeman. IMO. He doesn’t have the national press as much as those two do. — JRW
Fact remains, Freeman finished fifth last year with relatively little exposure to national fanbase. Now he’s had a full season and finished second in the NL Rookie of the Year ballot, so you’d expect more people to know about him. Votto is a given, but if Howard misses first month or more of season, it’ll severely reduce the number of votes he gets from fans for the “Midsummer Classic.”
Berkman moving to 1B this year with Cardinals is another big potential vote-getter, however.
FF is better than Heyward. He seems to also have a greater passion for the game. Jason is a big mess at the plate and I was disappointed in his defense, I thought he was a better defender with a better arm. Not hatin’ on JHey, I just think FF is more polished and is blessed with that durability thing.
It seems as if a handful of folks here have constructed a circle so tight around your clique, you get offended when the old blog moderator even offers modest approval to someone from outside it. Feels a bit like high school. Oh, well.
This place is really silly at times. I read a lot and some of these “adults” are so territorial and fight you to the death if you even remotely come close to disagreeing with them. They know who they are and all I can say is they need to get a life, or grow up. Probably both.
Saw Ides of March last night….thought it was overrated. Solid but not one I’ll see again.
I don’t get the constant looking ahead of who will be a free agent in 2013. It’s not like the Braves will spend big on free agents. If they did, they’d lock Bourn up now before he hits free agency.
Just not the philosophy this regime uses. If you cite Lowe as a guy they signed, remember that Wren was taking over and that staff HAD to be re-made. Lowe was all that was left.
I don’t get the constant looking ahead of who will be a free agent in 2013. It’s not like the Braves will spend big on free agents. If they did, they’d lock Bourn up now before he hits free agency.
Because I’m also a baseball fan, and not just solely a Braves fan that could care less about the happenings of other teams like some here do.
tommyp It’s not like the Braves will spend big on free agents. If they did, they’d lock Bourn up now before he hits free agency.
i dont get you logic. youre saying if the braves spent on free agents, they would sign bourn before he was a free agent? huh?
i think there is a good chance the braves will make one significant free agent signing next offseason. there are lots of free agents, many needs for the team, and plenty of money (presumably)
the braves sign free agents when they have a need and the money. derek lowe is an example.
If you cite Lowe as a guy they signed, remember that Wren was taking over and that staff HAD to be re-made. Lowe was all that was left.
thats not really correct. Lowe was the best among several free agent pitchers that offseason, and he wasnt the last one available. at the time, wren had already traded for vazquez and sign kawakami, so i also think its false to assume he was desperate to get lowe. Lowe IS an example of the braves getting the best available free agent at a given position.
“I don’t get the constant looking ahead of who will be a free agent in 2013. It’s not like the Braves will spend big on free agents. If they did, they’d lock Bourn up now before he hits free agency.”
Yep, free agency is really just a time to dream for Braves fans. Nothing really ever becomes a reality. Too cheap…and too content to be a mid-level team to wild card caliber team.
There were only 15 hitters with an OPS of over .850 in the National League last year. 2 of them(Fielder and Pujols) have moved to the American League and another may be suspended for 50 games to start the season(Ryan Braun).
when it comes to free agency next offseason, i think the braves will get at least one. i would expect it to be a 2nd tier guy, not hamilton. swisher, ethier, upton, quentin all seem like possibilities.

The reason why attendance declined is because fans saw collapse after collapse in the 90s-00s and no one was held accountable. Add the fact that the Braves went from being a multicultural mix in the early 90s to a predominantly caucasian team in recent years, they didn’t appeal to other ethnic groups, so they’re depending on the die-hard fans and don’t get the additional support from casual fans. Best thing they can hope for now is that Heyward becomes a superstar, Teheran becomes the next pedro, and the team gets sold to someone with deep pockets. Otherwise, expect more of the same.

Lowe was all that was left.

i dont get you logic. youre saying if the braves spent on free agents, they would sign bourn before he was a free agent? huh?
i think there is a good chance the braves will make one significant free agent signing next offseason. there are lots of free agents, many needs for the team, and plenty of money (presumably)
the braves sign free agents when they have a need and the money. derek lowe is an example.
