VaBraves – I’m confident in Matt to hit LHP, just wonder where his power went to. However, the power argument is like as with Prado in LF – Uggla at 2B makes up for it. Still……..Maybe the new hitting coach hels Matt get back to where he was when he killed LHP. If that happens, we’re good to go.
January 21st, 201211:58 am
Can’t wait to see what Cody Ross, JD Drew, Wilson Betemit and others sign for. Still think we missed out on Andruw Jones, perfect fit for what we needed. He completly mashed LHP and would have been a RH power bat off the bench opposite Hinske.
Blind Squirrel ( AKA CB)
Lew, I really never wanted a trade of Prado. I could accept a trade of JJ for someone who was young and could fit into LF. I really thought the easiest way would have been thru free agency, signing the best player you could afford. Willingham would have been a great fit, obviously the budget would not allow that thought process. It seems we really are locked into the team we have and might as well learn to live with it. I just dread the thought of where we will be if Chipper goes down.
Tomahawkin (The Godfather)
“Well, I’m not so concerned over Pastornicky. He won’t hit as bad as Ginzo (and Wislosn won’t be much worse – if at all – minus the power). Wilson ahs also been tutoring Padtornicky this winter, even though he didn’t even have a contract. We’ll be fine.”
Co-Sign…I Like The Pastor/Wilson Platoon
I want The Pastor To start Games and Wilson come in from the 7th inning On as a Defensive Replacement
Mora Like The Blauser/Belliard Platoon from 1991-1993
January 21st, 201211:59 am
THawkin – We’ve had Thunder Snow up here. That was weird and very surreal.
January 21st, 201212:01 pm
Yeah, MATTY D may be on the downhill as a baseball player, not a skier.
January 21st, 201212:02 pm
Squirrel – Yeah, Martin is a very valuable player – especially for the Braves. I have no concerns with him playing third, but we should definitely lose offense when CHipper is down, unless that above mentioned LF platoon comes through.
Still…… I really believe Prado comes back with a vengeance, Heyward turns it around and Uggla hits better early on. I think we’ll be fine.
Now if NEXT winter, with extra money, we don’t get a t least ONE impact player, I may join Disgusted on The Dark Side.
And not the norm I’m assuming by your comment on the thunder.
January 21st, 201212:05 pm
richbrave – Nope, hardly the norm. Never before heard of it until last winter. We might actually have it this week, with the weather vsarying from below zero to 40+ degrees almost overnight. With snow forecast, it coud well happen.
Very, very bizarre feeling. Totally incongruous.

Co-Sign…I see it as it reminds me of the Blauser/Belliard combo from 1991-1993…
Start The Pastor from innings 1-7 and use Wilson as a Defensive replacement in close games from the 7th inning on…
January 21st, 201212:10 pm
Is Disgusted the same guy that commented as Powder Blue?
January 21st, 201212:12 pm
THawkin – I could see Wilson coming in as a defensive replacement for both Patornicky and Chipper – maybe Uggla, too. Of course that would be if there were no more scheduled ABs in late innings from Chipper and Uggs and if we have a decent lead.
I’m about to draw some new Braves stuff for Spring Training. Got a Prado and an O’Ventbre planned. Any other requests from the Peanut Gallery?
January 21st, 201212:14 pm
Bat – No idea. Both are very negative, though – and seemingly unhappy people.

Checking out for a while y’all. Got some art to get done. Glad to send anyone some stuff to get signed for ST – all you got to do is ask and I’ll send prints for y’all to get signed.
January 21st, 201212:17 pm
Lowe’s 10 mil off books, Bourn’s 7 mil, Hinske’s 1.5 mil, Diaz’s 2 mil, Wilson’s 1 mil, Ross’s 1.6 mil, Moylan 1 mil
24 million for sure off the books.
Then Hopefully Chipper’s 14 mil will be gone, I see us trading Jurrjens and his possible 9-10 mil salary and I don’t see us paying EOF around 4 mil.
Around another 28 mil possibly off books
Then we have Options for McCann 13 mil and Hudson 9 mil I’m sure McCann will get a new deal but Huddy possibly could be gone with all the starters we have.
So another possible 9 mil.
All together a possible 52 million off the books, that’s before Arb raises of course.
m about to draw some new Braves stuff for Spring Training. Got a Prado and an O’Ventbre planned. Any other requests from the Peanut Gallery?

“THawkin – We’ve had Thunder Snow up here. That was weird and very surreal.”
Agreed…I saw Thunder with Freezing Rain in 2009 when I was In NW Arkansas…The area got an Inch and a half of Ice, It shut the City Down for damn near 5 days…
January 21st, 201212:33 pm
I think the lineup should be
CF Michael Bourn
3B Chipper Jones
RF Jason Heyward
2B Dan Uggla
C Brian McCann
LF Martin Prado
1B Freddie Freeman
SS Tyler Pastornicky
January 21st, 201212:35 pm
Lew, I really do hope you’re right about SS this year. I have no clue about Pastornicky other than I’ve typed this persons name waaay too much – too much for a player I’ve never even seen play the field or hit. I saw a shot of him in the dugout late last year and he is blonde headed. That’s it.
But anyways, I hope what’s been said about his defense is either a little exaggerated, or he improved it over the offseason.
January 21st, 201212:39 pm
I like it Jack!
January 21st, 201212:40 pm
Disgusted–that is what Hudson has always been, good but not graet. In Oakland he had 2 great seasons. — Webster
Seriously, this offseason has gotten way too long for some of you. A new hobby might be in order for the final weeks before spring training.
Webster, you’re talking about a pitcher with a 181-97 record and 3.40 ERA, who spent half his career in the American League. If you look at Baseball Reference.com, the first five names that come up as “Similar Pitchers” to Hudson statistically are CC Sabathia, Ron Guidry and Roy Halladay. The first five in “Similar Pitchers Through (Age) 35″ are Kevin Brown, David Cone, Andy Pettitte, Dwight Gooden and Bret Saberhagen.
Are you familiar with those pitchers?
January 21st, 201212:42 pm
“Is Disgusted the same guy that commented as Powder Blue?”
I dunno, I think Disgusted was The Dude who Ran Onto The Field In A Wedding Dress??? Rock On!
Disgusted: That’s one way to go through life, having the Braves’ September collapse influence your entire existence for at least the next six months.
January 21st, 201212:45 pm
Tim Hudson career record (13 seasons): 181-97, 3.40 ERA.
Roy Halladay career record (14 seasons): 188-92, 3.23 ERA
No, I’m not suggesting Hudson is the equal of Halladay, because clearly he’s not. But some around here need to get a little more perspective if they think Hudson is just another “good” pitcher.
January 21st, 201212:48 pm
Yeah Hudson is pretty good, reasonably priced, too. At least in the economics of MLB.
January 21st, 201212:49 pm
Okay, very, very good.

I still say Tim Hudson is on the cusp of being Hall of Fame material. However, Huddy will have to remain effective for another five to six years. But what few realize is that excluding 2009 which Hudson lost to injury, the man has averaged fifteen wins every year for twelve seasons.
January 21st, 201212:57 pm
O yea, Huddy’s career .651 winning percentage is better than Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz.
January 21st, 20121:08 pm
Give Hudson a potent lineup to work with and he’s a 20 game winner.
Partner him with a trio of a Maddux/Smoltz/Glavine on a consistant WS calier team for years running and he’s everybody “1st ballot HOF” like those three are.
Sometimes thinking logically helps me make friends.
January 21st, 20121:26 pm
Yep, Huddy should have won twenty games last year.
Again, they should have made the playoffs in 2011. However, the offense tanked. Why? Does anybody realize that our 2010 offense led the N.L in walks, OBP and doubles…..and we didn’t have Dan Uggla in the line up.
2011 saw the offense fail. Mainly because they were ranked 8th in walks, 14th in OBP and 4th in strike outs with 1260. Simply put, we could not get on base nearly enough.
Why? because Terry Pendleton should have kept his job, hiring Larry Parrish was a huge mistake and the fault lies in the mistaken judgement of our venerable GM…….Frank Wren.

I wonder Has Huddy Mentioned if he wants to play another 4-5 years…He’s Financially Stable, Is a Leader in the Community and has a Family…Thats a lot of Ifs…
The Dude is a Pitcher like Maddux/Glavine was he doesn’t have to rely on overpowering/dominating stuff to get hitters out like he did early in his career…
For some Reason Unless he has a serious injury again…I think Huddy will pitch another 2-3 years to try to get a Ring! Not to mention he is a great overall athlete
January 21st, 20121:31 pm
@Coach and @D.O.B.
Why Did Pendleton get moved from his hitting coach position? Despite the Great Patient offense we had in 2010 and TP was very well instrumental in Developing J-Hey as a hitter in 2010

Maybe so, but the fire TP crowd was large and vocal.
and to all you chipper bashers you can go somewhere to
get a grip sure he aint the player he was 10 years ago
but he’s still chipper and still a feared and respected hitter

I don’t even know what the point of arguing over whether the Braves or most any other baseball team will have a successful year or not. Of course teams like the Astros, etc. most likely wonmt be successful, but … Some of ya’ll need to remember ANYthing can happen at any time in this nutty game. That’s what keeps people coming back for more, to see how it all plays out. It’s almost always the same title with different plots, twists and turns – and in recent memory the endings have been crazy different. ‘10 Giants?
January 21st, 20122:05 pm
Again, I was one of the few who supported Terry Pendleton. The rest of the 80-85 percent were out to lunch on this issue. So was Frank Wren.
January 21st, 20122:32 pm
Well I don’t know that it was 80-85% but whatever it was, they were loud and adamant.

Refreshing comment from the co-owner of the Rangers. When if ever will we hear something like this from Liberty or McGuirk?
When it comes to the club’s finances, Simpson talked about a strategy to make the Rangers a “dynasty.”
“We’re writing checks to make this stuff happen, but at some point it’s got to sustain itself and we understand that,” Simpson said. “Winning comes first and then support comes. You can’t ask fans to come to every game while you’re losing and have them help you increase your revenues. You’re trying to take it to a new level, a sustainable level, where it is a dynasty franchise like the Dallas Cowboys achieved. Then in the off-years, and inevitably you’ll have some, they still support you.”
No one who owns the Braves is saying this and more importantly acting like this… We need to think about it before we chastise people for not going to games…
January 21st, 20122:43 pm

January 21st, 20122:45 pm
Interesting post. Hard to believe we weren’t able to bring in a more solid 4th OFer option. When your team can’t afford pieces like that I believe that’s a issue. With all the money we expect to come off the books after the season, increasing payroll this off season would have made alot of sense. Another 3 to 5 million would have helped Wren a ton for improving this team for the 2012 season.
January 21st, 20122:47 pm
The Texas Rangers’ payroll was a couple million more than the Braves last year. I know having Liberty as the owners isn’t the best, but it could be a lot worse. We’re a middle market team with average attendance and an average payroll.
Besides, we’ll see how the Rangers or the Angels or these other teams dishing out huge contracts and huge payrolls are doing in a few years. Didn’t work out for the Dodgers or Mets.
January 21st, 20122:50 pm
We need to think about it before we chastise people for not going to games…. _ Klaus
2.3 mm plus go to the games year after year, longest such streak in MLB. Maybe we should stop claiming people don’t go to the games.

In regards to Hudson and those thinking he is just an okay or decent pitcher, learn some facts. Hudson is ranked 3rd in wins among active pitchers. ONLY Wakefield, Halladay are above Hudson. yes Wakefield has more wins than any other active pitcher. Bottom line is Hudson is a baller. He is among the list of top pitchers. He simply goes out each year very quietly win you 15-18 games.

January 21st, 20123:05 pm
Yes many on here bashed TP. Saying it was his fault on many occasions. Saying we need a change,we need a change. (Sound familiar?) Be careful what you wish for. So we got Larry Parrish, that didn’t work out. Same as those that wants new ownership. You want new ownership that KNOWS what they are doing. P Angelos, does not know what he is doing. Look at the Mets. I would rather have LM than Angelos any day. The Braves are fortunate enough to have solid baseball people running the show from JS all the way to the scouting department.
January 21st, 20123:08 pm
@rich, I have no clue and will not pretend to have a clue. My only point is, Hudson is and has been and is one of the most consistent pitchers in baseball. You can pretty much count on him to get the wins. I would doubt that his back is going to cause him problems once he is done with rehab and strength and conditioning.

A week ago Cody Ross was in the rumors, and now nothing again. Would be nice to pick up Cody Ross……..
January 21st, 20123:49 pm
Cody Ross or someone like him would be a great and much needed move. Clearly would be a upgrade for our 4th OFer spot. Prado is gonna spend alot of time at 3rd, Ross would be perfect fit to play LF during that time. Good defender who can play all OF spots. The bench would be much improved.
January 21st, 20123:53 pm
VaBravesFan-Like Cody Ross a lot, when he played for San Fran.I’m going to keep campaigning for him to be on the team.
January 21st, 20124:00 pm
my 337 post is awaiting Moderation…
January 21st, 20124:04 pm
Cody Ross is solid. I think he’s a improvement over what we have right now. I think Ross will sign where ever the most playing time will be offered. I really think he’s dreaming if anyone see’s him as a starting outfielder. He’s probably gonna have to settle for a 1 year deal with a possible option. He won’t get close to last year’s salary of 6+ million. I think if he signed here he would log around 50 to 70 starts in the Outfield. I’m figuring that Prado is gonna play at least 30 games at 3rd base, and Bourn and Heyward get around 10 days off a piece. He’ll also get some pinch hitting in too.
January 21st, 20124:05 pm
I’m not High at all on Cody Ross, Never Have been, I’d Rather we stand pat and Trade for Someone During the Season…or Sign a player who gets released from a team that does roster cuts out of S. Training, ya know right when teams have to cut down their rosters to the 25 man limit and release players
Tomahawkin-What did you say?
January 21st, 20124:07 pm
I don’t like UGA’s grey home unis.
It also looks like UGA’s got their own Zaza Pachulia
January 21st, 20124:11 pm
Well, I’m strickly talking about Cody Ross as a bench player. Thats a good point about players getting released and such. Might be able to add someone that way.
January 21st, 20124:15 pm
Cody Ross, would be the best fit to me,and great “D” in the out field too.Fredi, Uggla reunion. I like it a lot,but we will have to see what happens from now to Spring Traing. Hopefully it is Cody Ross.Talk later got some house cleanning to do,and peace…….

Rockies working on deal for Scutaro from Red Sox, would start at 2B for Colorado. Yet another sign of how unlikely it’s becoming for the Braves to trade Prado this offseason. (Rockies wanted him as their 2B, but talks cooled a while back and have never really gotten any traction since.)
January 21st, 20125:50 pm
Prado can stay. I’m fine with that.
January 21st, 20126:08 pm
Attendance is down to 2007 levels which is the wrong direction but the comment about winning versus expecting fans to show up when you are losing or in the case of the Braves face planting yards from the finish line was the key point.
With the TV contracts in TX and LAA, managers and staff they should be fine. ATL is clearing 20mm/year in net profit and acting like they are losing 20mm a year.
That is the difference. TX and LAA want to win or as they said in the article “create a dynasty” of winning.
Liberty and the ATL FO just want to get by and win if things break right.
Which description above will bring out the fans?
January 21st, 20126:10 pm
Prado is staying b/c Wren over values his players and he has no 3B option in his entire system (major or minor leagues) to back up Chipper except Prado.
