I’m not sure YOU read your posts.

Why do you say that? If being an optimist means thinking the Phillies suck every year until they hit you in the face with a 102 win season, then I guess I’m not on your level of optimism. In fact, absolutely no one on this blog is as optimistic and delusional as yourself. There is no gray area in that statement. ;)

raleighbravesfan – EXACTLY. The draft is what it is because of available money. The team is what it is because of available money. Changes are or ern’t made because of available money. People think that I’m a blind homer, but I may have more of a grasp of reality than most here do.

I’d love to draft Strasburgs and Harpers every year, but when you consistently compete for playoff spots and are a mid salry level team with little to no hope of boosting the money you have to spend, it isn’t going to happen. If you can’t afford to pay above slot, you go with what you CAN afford – apparently college polished pitchers. I’d just wait to condemn them and the choices AFYTER they actually prove to be bad moves and not before.

Efrim – All I said about the Phillies was that they could stumble, too and that the Braves weren’t without a chance to overtake them. Never said they were bad, just refuse to hand anything to anyone because they look good on paper.

And if you actually go look at what transpired the last couple of years, the Braves played over the Phillies or close to them for major portions of the sean and not fallen on their faces in Spring Training as many seem to think they would.

“you know who you are… wish to argue the ideal, or at least, the desirable, without regard to economic reality”

Well, I think some of feel as though the “economic reality” always seems to be less than realistic. The Braves say they are going to make changes to the team…and end up not making changes because they don’t have the money. But if said changes were made they might end up making more money.

Braves still need more offense if they want to go deep into the playoffs. If the goal is to field a team that has a shot at playing in a wildcard playoff game, then sure this team is built to possibly achieve that goal.

“idealism vs economic reality argument”

I think that in itself would be a great argument. Because baseball is probably one of the most unfair sports in terms of salary cap, large team caps vs small team caps, etc.

And to take that a step further…is it even possible to consistently compete if you don’t have the money to do so? Probably to some extent, but a lot of the rich teams have been great for years now…and continue to get better through free agency.

College players are usually finished products, yet they have no leverage so they are more signable where high school players can go to college if they don’t get there $ value.

I’m late to this debate. But I did see this and I’ve read it several times in more places than one. But when you listen to it, it doesn’t seem to make much sense on face value.

College players have no leverage.
High school players, if not offered a contract they like, can go to college.
That’s not really leverage… refusing a deal to put yourself in a position of no leverage to get a better deal.

That’s not really leverage… refusing a deal to put yourself in a position of no leverage to get a better deal.

TennesseePaul, it depends on how desirable is the player. If a team really wants that player, the threat of college may get him more dollars because, obviously if he goes to college, the odds decrease that that same team will draft the player next time he’s eligible.

We see this fairly regularly. Players fall in the draft because teams are worried that they’ll go to college. And often times players that go in the first round also are good enough to have college scholarships in other sports. This is leverage for the player. A team, if the team really wants such a player, will have to buy that player out of his scholarships. That’s simply what is meant by high school players having leverage and college players having less leverage. Obviously most college players good enough to be drafted have nowhere else to go but into pro baseball or into the “real world.”

I point that out and highlight what Wren said he would do at the beginning of the off-season and get piled on as a Braves hater with outrageous expectations.

Personally, I think the team could be improved. People are free to disagree. But accusations that my understanding of the GM’s comments and subsequent actions are “outrageous” is false and I will refute it as such. Claims that Wren “improved” the offense this off-season are also false as Wren hasn’t made a move. People hoping or believing the offense will be better in 2012 than it was in 2011 can believe so, that’s fine. I’m skeptical, but that too should be fine. It’s a matter of health and we all hope the players are healthy this season.

Sure, Ryan Howard is out for awhile…however the difference between the Phillies and the Braves….is that the Phillies can play through injuries and keep on winning. They have proven during the past 5 seasons that they can.

In 2011, Chase Utley: Misses half the season. Brad Lidge: Misses half the season. Jose Contraras: Misses most of 2100. At one point, for over a month….the Phillies were without their top three bullpen guys (Lidge, Contraras and Madsen)…all on the DL.

Imagine if the Braves were without Kimbrel, Venters and EOF for one month.

Ibanez had a Jason Heyward like season for a big part of 2011. Jimmy Rollins struggled like Dan Uggla did the first half of 2011.

All this..and the Phillies ran away with the division. Braves fans, we are the king of making excuses.

St. Louis were without their ace (Adam Wainright) for all of 2011. Imagine if the Braves were without Tim Hudson for all of 2011.

Difference between St. Louis and the Braves in 2011: Pujols and Holliday (#3 and #4 hitters) played every game down the stretch. Chipper and McCann (#3 and #4 hitters)……wore down, broken down, needing days off.

There’s something about Hamilton and Texas that’s… different. The team and organization has embraced him and all of his past issues… he’s like a son to many of them. The way they talk about him here in TX, it’s like he’s the second coming of Roy Hobbs.

The two sides have already had a few high level extension discussions. If I were a bettin’ man, which I’m not, except on chicken fights, I’d bet he stays with a 4 year deal.
