Colonel Maximo Aybar Baez, a spokesman for the Dominican police, said on his Twitter account that Carmona, whose actual name is Roberto Hernandez Heredia, was arrested after leaving the U.S. Consulate in the Dominican Republic on Thursday.

Authorities said Heredia is 31 years old and not 28, as he has claimed.

Man, I miss that guy. I love baseball, and I watch ‘em all. But, that guy in CF made the game better viewing. I was kinda hoping Bourn would bring some of that wow-factor. I didn’t really see that. Not to say he’s not a great defender, just that he ain’t Druw…

nolie,

What about an older ‘puter with an older TV? I was an earlier adopter, and my TV’s only got one HDMI, which I use. Any way to get that signal through an older input? Component/S-video/composite?

good to know nolie. Man, I’m like a kid on Christmas Eve! I can’t wait to get home and try out this ‘puter to TV thing. I’m 90 percent sure my laptop has an HDMI port, but good to know there’s an alternative. To me, this is better option then Extra Innings package, because then I could watch baseball on any TV, not just the ones hooked to DirecTV in my house. Means the man cave could be a baseball haven and the wife could still enjoy her “girly” shows on living room or bedroom TV. I got this all planned out now. How much is the MLB.com plan again, can someone post? And is it all MLB games, or do you buy team-by-team?

In fairness, Hosmer’s quote was in response to someone asking him if he’d be happy making a big jump from ~70 wins to ~90 wins, and finishing second in the division.

I imagine his tune would change with a 2-game WC lead in September. :-)

It’s under discussion. There remains a high level of confidence that MLB will use the new 10-team format for the upcoming season.

And as soon as they can cram it down the paying public’s throats, they’ll add two expansion teams to dilute the talent even further and have 4 division per league. That will lead to 6 playoff teams (4 division winners, two wild cards) per league and maybe the World Series in November.

tiger297

January 19th, 2012

maybe we should go to two leagues – a 6 team league for the big money teams and the other 24 teams are AAAA. Then we can quit complaining about playing against the higher payroll clubs and have fewer teams. Heck we could also cut games at that point and have a shorter season with fewer playoff games and rounds as well.

The Rangers are crazy imo. I don’t expect Darvish to do much better over here than Dice K has since he arrived.

Maybe not, but I think this is as much about exporting the MLB Brand as it is importing Yu Darvish. Read some of the MLB International press releases…

Sales of licensed merchandise in the U.S. remain sluggish, although the NBA says domestic sales at its NBA Store in New York and nbastore.com are up this season, but overseas sales have steadily increased the past decade and now represent roughly 30% of total merchandise sales. – Jonathan Clegg, Wall Street Journal, March 23, 2010

ncscoots, I don’t expect a player to say he’d be happy to finish in second place and win a wild card berth. Does this mean it makes sense for baseball to consider geography as much as record in playoff seeding? Not really.

Look at 2010. The Yankees would have played the Red Sox in a one-game playoff. The Yankees finished 1 game back of the Rays. They finished 6 games ahead of the Red Sox. And neither of the other division winners won more games than the Yankees. The Yankees also played in the toughest division in the league. According to all the in-depth measures of team quality, based on run differential and strength of schedule, the Yankees and Rays were clearly equal and the best teams in the league. Yet, because of geography, because they just happen to play in the Eastern Division of the AL, they get punished in the playoff while a 90-win Texas team and a 94-win Minnesota team don’t have to worry about a one-game playoff and can cruise in.

This is not so much about fairness, although certainly it seems unfair to me. It’s about wanting to give the best teams as much of an advantage as possible in the postseason and decreasing the likelihood of a fluke World Series champion. Of course we all want excitement and playoffs. But I would also like to see some sort of balance so that regular season success is rewarded and the better teams have at least a slightly better chance for a ring than the lesser teams.

If the Braves were the second best team in the NL in a given season, and clearly inferior teams got a pass from having to play a one-game playoff, while the Braves were forced to against the 4th or 5th best team in the league, I would be none to happy. And it would highlight the joke that is the new MLB postseason structure. But maybe you prefer geography to be a major factor in postseason seeding. Or maybe you haven’t through through the fact that randomness has placed Atlanta in the east while other, weaker baseball teams are lucky enough to happen to be further west, therefore they would get a pass in terms of playing that one-game playoff. Maybe you prefer regular season success to mean less than what division a team happens to have been placed in.

The Rangers are crazy imo. I don’t expect Darvish to do much better over here than Dice K has since he arrived.

Why not? What are we going on? Dice-K is Japanese, Darvish is Japanese, therefore they are the same? Seems odd that Darvish is getting a bad rap already, for no other reason than he came from the same place as Dice-K.

nolie

January 19th, 2012
5:32 pm

Darvish is somewhat atypical for a Japanese player, he fits the “ideal” pitcher’s body profile a bit better than most Japanese do. Braves scouted him while he was in junior high/high school back around 2003 or so IIRC

Darvish 6′5″ some are saying he is between Beckett and Burnett in ability. If that is the case then that is not bad. Chances are he is not the head case like AJ. One of the the adjustments that is difficult for Japanese pitchers is they don’t travel as much as the MLB teams.

I have Dish and “Hill Street Blues” is on NUVO (Spanish oriented, but it’s in English) Channel 159 a couple of nights a week. The prints are very good, I had watched this show somewhere a while back and it had that washed out 1970’s look, but these have sharp colors and no jagged cuts. They also show “NYPD Blue” the same night.
BTW, for all those folks complaining about finding the Braves games on TV, I’ve had Direct TV and Dish Network in the past couple of years and there is no comparison as far as sports and the Braves go: Direct TV is terrible, they constantly fight with the providers and black out events with no notice. Dish has all the Braves games with no blackouts or blocking networks due to disagreements.

If the Nationals sign Prince Fielder, it could be like opening Pandora’s Box in terms of consequences for the club. Prince is a great hitter, and he would be a wonderful left-handed presence in their lineup, but…

(1) The Nationals would have to trade Adam LaRoche, coming off a major injury, and would be forced to eat a major portion of his $8 million 2012 contract. He also has a $1 million buyout for 2013.

(2) Signing Fielder could negatively affect extension talks with Ryan Zimmerman, who is scheduled to be a free agent after 2013. Could the Nationals afford three position players (Werth, Fielder, Zimmerman) each making over $20 million a year for multiple years? Werth, signed through 2017, will make $20.571 million in 2014, and his salary goes over $21 million a season in 2015, 2016, and 2017.

(3) Signing Fielder would leave OF/1B Michael Morse, who hit 31 home runs and had a .910 OPS in 2011, without a position. The Nationals essentially have three corner outfielders: Morse, Werth, and Bryce Harper. The team says that Werth will play center field in 2012, and in 2013 they will sign a free agent center fielder. In 2013, with Werth and Harper in the corner outfield spots and Prince at 1B, Morse (under team control through 2013) would be the odd man out.

(4) Strasburg is making $4.875 million this season in the last year of his four year / $15.1 million contract. He will expect big raises going forward, especially after the extension the Nationals gave to Gio Gonzalez.

To be honest, I don’t much care. A good team should be able to win on the road, regardless of who they are playing, and especially if they are playing a team they are clearly better than. And there is really no reason to act so condescending. (whether you meant it to or not, it was).

CTB, dogs are cool. Especially a stray or a rescue. I got a rescue choc lab. He is 4 and still thinks he is a 1 yr old puppy. onward with baseball talk. We have 1 month before spring training.
