The Mayan Calendar Company was nice under private ownership. Nice 401K, good benefits and a relaxed atmosphere. The company was bought in 493BC by Quetazocoatl Media & Stone Tablet, a conglomerate with no heart.

I’ve been watching TV since I was a kid in the 50’s and I agree with you, it’s never been a better time for quality shows. The traditional Networks have some very good shows, premium Cable channels are getting better, but the leaders in this “Golden Age” are channels like FX, TNT, and AMC…they really have set the bar for top quality shows.

My biggest concern for 2012 is SS. As the Braves stand now, the only SSs on the 40 man roster are Pastornicky & WIlson. From all credible sources last year, Pastornicky was at least 1 more year from being ready. WIlson, who was just resigned, is a solid defensive reserve, but not a starter and clearly deficient at the plate. Do you think the Braves will go into the season with such a hole in the roster?
Wren says they will take the team pretty much just like it is; there has been general knowledge for months that the shortstop position would end just like it is now, only question was which super cheap backup would they sign.
The Braves have had rookies starting as position players coming out of spring training three years in a row–Schafer in 2009, Heyward in 2010, Freeman in 2011. In only the first case, was there really someone else competing for the spot in Spring Training, and let’s be honest Josh Anderson was not exactly great competition. In the case of Schafer, when he started struggling early, Wren pulled the trigger quickly to obtain a veteran replacement. With Pastornicky, there is a veteran already in place to back him up, if he does not transition well. Wren has already announced that he is keeping some money back for mid-season trades/acquisitions. With Wilson board, there is not much need to worry. The Braves can give Pastornicky a shot and make a trade for another starter, if he does not pan out. Going into spring training, there are always questions about having a rookie penciled in. It would be worse to go and pick up a contract, find out that your rookie is ready and then have him blocked by the contract that was just signed.
Hard to say that Wren had the shortstop situation planned out well in advance. I think it’s a matter of the market not being able to meet the Braves’ needs (a quality veteran shortstop at a reasonable cost as a one-year bridge to allow Pastornicky or Simmons to develop).
Much prefer Pastornicky playing at Gwinnett in 2012 (or for a better part of the season there); that beats on the job training in Atlanta. We really still don’t know if Pastornicky has strong defensive capability. Unfortunate if the kid starts making fielding errors; fans and some local media can be merciless. Rather Pastornicky make his mistakes in AAA, where there’s some leeway on performance.
But Wren’s playing the cards he has. Pastornicky is getting the shot unless or until he proves he can’t handle the job. Wilson is a capable shortstop… no flash and his bat isn’t strong, but he can help fill the gap.
“The Braves can give Pastornicky a shot and make a trade for another starter, if he does not pan out.”
Easier said than done, Moe. Who would be available, and what would that player’s price be? I tend to think that if Pastornicky isn’t ready for prime time, Wilson gets the job by default.
Frankly, I’m higher on Simmons now than Pastornicky (not that Pastornicky doesn’t have the potential to be a good player: I just think Simmons can be better). I think Wren would want to get through 2012 without getting tied up by bringing in a shortstop whose contract may not suit the Braves’ plans for 2013 (either Pastornicky or Simmons, projected). We’ll see.

Baseball America Top 10 Detroit Tigers prospects -Efrim
Two Razorbacks on that list…nice. James McCann always struck me as a future-pitching coach type of player. He’s not going to wow you with statistics, but he’s got that Field General aura. And Smyly was strong at High A and AA last year. Good debut season for him.
I actually think Pastornicky is pretty close to being ready. Yes, he could probably do with two months in Gwinnett to start the season, but he’s pretty much ready, imo. And I don’t think him hitting 8th will really disrupt the team.
It’s what I aspire to, Lew. If I don’t get out of Florida though I’ll probably end up in a condo and how will I get to yell at kids to get off my lawn.
I agree it’s the Golden age of drama on TV. My personal favorite is The Closer, and I will miss it terribly. That said, I still love some of the old ones…Perry Mason, Original Law & Order, Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue, St. Elsewhere just to name a few.
Modern Family is one of the best comedies of all time….That said, most of the rest can’t compare to shows like I Love Lucy, Andy Griffith, Both Bob Newhart shows, Mary Tyler Moore, Mash, Seinfeld, and Friends.
I don’t think it would hurt anything for Pastornicky to be up in the majors out of camp if there weren’t so many question marks throughout the lineup. With any other team who has balanced power and players that can hit .300 throughout a season, then batting Pastornicky wouldn’t hurt things one bit. But with many question marks throughout this lineup every spot 1-8 in the lineup is crucial.
As for Pastornicky, one could make the argument that the kid is getting an opportunity because of several reasons. Payroll, youth movement, lack of an off season trade, necessity etc.
Pastornicky could use another year in the minors or not, only time will tell.
I’ll feel a lot better about having Minor and Gilmartin if we just focus on filling the lower levels with prospects this upcoming draft. Even if they stay true to converting J.R. Graham and Cody Martin, those two and Carlos Perez are the only ones to even get halfway excited about. I don’t have enough information on the DSL kids, but most international prospects are big question marks anyway until they get to the GCL and perform.
Yes, I have enjoyed sitcoms over the years from I Love Lucy, Andy Griffith, to SCTV. I like a couple of current ones such as 2 Broke Girls and Suburgatory, also cable shows such as Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Larry Sanders Show. And I love the British comedies on Saturday night especially Are You Being Served? I guess I lean toward quirky and irreverent shows.
Bat – You could always m9ove to Vermont. I have very few neighbors and the only kids are a year old. NO one to yell at and I have 30 acres of lawn. Far cry from Floridian conditions.
Raleigh and Patio, not looking at things through rose colored glasses and recognizing potential problems, does not equate to being extremely negative.
Granted:
All four of our five starting pitchers who are coming off injuries could possibly return to being great — but is it likely -???
And Chipper could all of a sudden play most every game, return to having great production as a third place hitter, and suddenly have acceptable defensive range at third base — but is this proabable – ????
And the rookie Shortstop could have a great year and be both productive offensively and do an good job defensively — Will this happen ????
And our Second Baseman could in the middle of his career start having an acceptable batting avarage and on base average — Is the going to happen????
And the Right Fielder could start adjusting to major leage pitching and be productive offensively – Is this probably going to happen????
And all of a sudden, all of the injuries of Starting Pitchers that we have continuously had since Leo left as Pitching coach could stop – will this happen???
True, perhaps all of this could happen. Let’s hope that it does, but what are the odds.
WE WILL SEE —– REMEMBER TO EVALUATE THESE THINGS AT THE END OF THE SEASON – We will see.
One of the cable channels shows Hill Street Blues now and I had not seen that it in years and it was my favorite at the time it was out. I went to IMDb to look it up and was amazed by how many well known actors were on that show as a regular or semi-regular, and not even counting tons of guest stars.
Plus most of the main cast are still alive and active as actors and/or directors…it’s really amazing if you compare it to other shows of that time and what happened to their casts.
Hill Street Blues was and is a quality show and one of the all-time greats.
Yeah—ya can’t beat those old shows! I’ll be honest, other than I Love Lucy and Andy Griffith, the only show you mentioned that I’ve heard of is Curb Your Enthusiasm, and I couldn’t tell you what it was about if my life depended on it…
I mean, there has never been a time in my life when there are more quality shows on than in the past couple of years.
I disagree. TV these days is crap. Right now I’ve got one show that I look forward to in Modern Family. The rest? Pretty horrible.
Maybe it’s because I don’t have time to get into the 1 hour weekly dramas that are touted on the blog, but man o man, television just feels like it’s gone downhill lately.
I find myself watching more movies lately than anything. Not out of choice, but because there’s either nothing on worth watching or because I’m late to the dance on all of these new “blockbuster” dramas.
ken – Agreed…Hill Street Blues truly broke new ground, and was a superior quality show. It had a gritty, “reality” feel to it, seen often now, but never before.
The captain of the Costa Cocordia said he “slipped and fell” into the lifeboat instead of helping the passengers of the cruise ship to escape. It made me start thinking about the historical events that might have changed if someone had “slipped and fell”. John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald immediately came to mind, then what if Neil Armstrong had “slipped and fell” when he was stepping down the steps on the moon.
On the Braves front what might have changed if others had “slipped and fell”? What if Chuck Knoblauch fell when faking out Lonnie Smith or Jack Morris ” slipped and fell” when walking down the steps of the dugout against the Braves. How history could have changed.
You probably haven’t missed a lot and those classic sitcoms are timeless.
Reminds me of how the video game Guitar Hero brought all those classic 70s and 80s rock songs to a whole new generation of kids. My 8 year old grandson loves Foghat and Ted Nugent and thinks it’s so cool that I saw them live back in the day…I love it!
Murph – The best of the current shows are dramas, with the exception of Modern Family. I agree that there is a lot of crap on too, but there are a lot of channels now, with a lot of programing time to fill. You have to be discriminating, and look around.
That said, I even find some of the reality shows to be entertaining. There are MANY terrible ones, but I enjoy some, including The Amazing Race, Top Chef, and Chopped. I generally enjoy ones that involve competition, where you win by actually doing something, not by avoiding being “voted off” by the rest of the morons. It goes without saying that the trashy Bachelor, Kardashian, Real Housewife, etc, etc, stuff is pure junk, at least in my opinion.
I don’t think I could handle the cold weather. And really it’s nice where I live, quite street, on a cul-de-sac. I can sit on the screened back porch and listen to the waves crash on the beach, love that. I just don’t need, and am beginning to not want, all this much living space.
I love the “he should have spent another year in the minors” comments.
Like any of us really know that for a fact. Truth be told, most of these kids in the minors will never make the adjustment once they get to the show to stay long term. It’s more about strength, stamina and maturity. Some have it at an early age but not the skills. Not many kids out there that have Mac’s ability to slow the game down and concentrate on making the adjustments. Heyward doesn’t have that ability yet and Frenchie may never.
jeff r Indeed. The Braves have done it on occasion, too. Perhaps Heyward was rushed?
i dont really think so. he barely played in AAA, but he lit it up his rookie season…doesnt that show he was ready? i guess you could argue that it caught up with him last year, but i think that was injuries more than development. im guessing the last guy we rushed was shafer.
I just don’t need, and am beginning to not want, all this much living space.
I’ve got two spare bedrooms… cheap rent in exchange for babysitting services and some light cleaning. You can have your own TV, PS3, and all the wireless internet you can use.
don our Second Baseman could in the middle of his career start having an acceptable batting avarage and on base average — Is the going to happen????
i just wanted to opine that our 2nd baseman already puts up acceptable avg and obp numbers, outside of his horrific slump last season. he is a proven player.
At first glance that sounds like an attractive over. But then again, I doubt my housekeeper would be willing to commute to do the cleaning, and even when my own nieces and nephews were your kids ages, though they cracked me up, my tolerance level for them was a few hours at best.
A great family movie that just came out on DVD is Courageous. Its a cop movie with chases and gun fights, so maybe not 3 year old material, but i recommend it.
DAP, she’s 4 now, so she could probably handle it.
Came out of my office last night to find the kids sitting on the couch watching one of the Die Hard movies. Always a little disturbing to hear your kids belly laugh because a guy got blown up.
Great conversation this morning, folks, y’all have a good day. I have a lunch date with a young lady I have not seen and barely talked to in 27 years…reckon we’ll both look the same?
ST is less that a month away, right? GO BRAVES.
Bat, I understand. Offer will stay on the table, though, so if you change your mind, you know where to find me.
To sweeten the deal you can have the spare bedroom with it’s own private bath and patio. Pretty nice room. Between all of the kids’ activities you wouldn’t have to interact with them much. Maybe do some light sparring with the 4 year old after karate class or paint a picture with the 5 year old… both are fairly self sufficient, wipe their own butts, etc.
jeff r Indeed.
————————————————————————————————————-
I don’t believe injuries is the excuse for Heyward’s poor season. I believe opposing pitchers figured out that he can’t hit a low inside breaking pitch. So that is all he sees. Until he learns to shorten his swing and become more disciplined at the plate I don’t see him turning it around.
Murph – My kids always enjoyed watching movies with us…watched their favorites many times. Of course, there were the obvious ones…Disney, animation…but others you would never think of. 2 off the top of my head were Scavanger Hunt (Tony Randall and a plethora of character actors), Support Your Local Sheriff (James Garner and many character actors, very funny). They also loved Peewee’s Big Adventure, and the original Willy Wanka and the Chocolate Factory. Many others I will think of later.
raleigh, that’s funny… my kids’ favorite movie for a while was The Three Amigos. I used to sing “Blue Shadows” to them every night to get them to fall asleep, and when they finally got a chance to watch the movie they loved it.
The 5 year old wanted to dress up as Carmen for Halloween, but only if the 4 year old dressed as El Guapo, which she refused to do.
Murph – I was pretty damned good at all of the Sesame Street voices. Had to read the book and keep in character every night to get my son to sleep. I do a great Count.
Lew – Same here. My best voices were Grover and Cookie Monster, although I could do a decent Bert and Ernie, as well. The kids loved all those Muppet movies, too. Premature death of Jim Henson was a trajedy.
Mac – Unfortunately, no. We are in Orioles/Nats territory…And the local Time-Warner Cable is in a 4 year old p@ssing contest with MASN, owned by Peter Angelos, and provider of Orioles and Nats games…We can’t get them. You can buy the MLB package (which carries most Braves games) on cable for about $40/month for the season, but Nats and Os games are blacked out (even when they play the Braves). We are 250 miles from DC, but still blacked out. It’s maddening. Western NC is in the Braves territory.
raleighbraves – ubfortunately, Disney considers that the privelege of working with Mickey and Donald comprises a good bit of their comepnsation – that and getting into any of their parks (except where the Braves train) for free. I’d rather he got more money – from them and not from me.
Mac – Good things about the area offset the issue with Braves, and I can highly recommend the NHL Hurricanes for entertainment. If you come to Garner, you will likely run into Scotty McCreery at some point (still at Garner High School), although he doesn’t work at the Lowe’s food store any more. He and some buddys had rented a lux box at a recent Hurricanes game.
Mike – I remember watching the first episode of CK in 1955. So does my wife. We only got 2 channels, so it was that, or the Today show. Many happy hours if front of the TV with the Captain and the gang. I particularly loved Mr. Green Jeans.

I don’t believe injuries is the excuse for Heyward’s poor season. I believe opposing pitchers figured out that he can’t hit a low inside breaking pitch. So that is all he sees. Until he learns to shorten his swing and become more disciplined at the plate I don’t see him turning it around.
