I went to spring training one year. Got Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s autograph. Fat lot of good that did me
Hey, Salty looks like the starter going into Spring Training.

Cody Ross makes so much sense as the Braves 4th outfielder. Said to be looking for a two year, $10 million deal. Is he worth it, based on what other centerfield-capable types have gotten this off season?
Coco Crisp signed a two year, $14 million deal (with a club option for 2014) with Oakland. He will be their starting centerfielder.
Grady Sizemore signed a one year, $5 million deal (with another $4.5 million in potential performance and award bonuses) with Cleveland. He will be their starting centerfielder, health permitting.
David Dejesus signed a two year, $10 million deal with the Cubs. He will be their starting right fielder (they still have Marlon Byrd).
Nate McLouth signed a one year, $1.75 million deal with Pittsburgh. He will be their fourth outfielder, as they have Andrew McCutcheon patrolling center.
Scott Hairston signed a one year, $1.1 million deal with the Mets. He will be their fourth outfielder.
Mike Cameron signed a minor league deal with the Nationals. Whether or not he makes the team will depend on his performance in Spring Training and whether or not the Nationals bring Bryce Harper north with them.
Rick Ankiel is still a free agent. Washington does have some interest in bringing him back, again depending on the Harper situation.
Cody Ross made $6.3 million last season with the Giants. In terms of ability, Cody Ross is kind of a tweener, not quite good enough to be a starter, but very serviceable and valuable in the fourth outfielder role. I think he is better than the backup outfielders listed above, so I would be willing to pay him more, but not $10 million for two years. If I were the Braves, I would be willing to go $7 million, maybe $8 million for two years, with a salary of $2 million or $3 million for 2012, and $5 million for 2013, when he could potentially be a stopgap replacement for Bourn.
Ross is a far better outfield option than Diaz or Hinske, and given the recent injury histories of Chipper, Heyward, and Prado, he could be in for quite a bit of playing time with the Braves. Short of bringing in a major, full-time impact bat in left field via trade, which at this late date seems unrealistic, signing Ross is the best move the Braves can make to improve the roster.
I don’t even know where that ball is anymore

I don’t see the Braves going 10-14m for a 2 yr deal for Cody Ross. I am guessing the final spots for the roster will come out of spring training. I wonder if it would be worth it to give Maggs a ST invite if he is deemed healthy. Could be a cheap and productive gamble/pickup
kl – sorry for bailing in mid convo last night…I put in my sign off but apparently I used the wrong number of … as when I opened the laptop this AM the duplicate comment thing was showing

jeffrey, nah. I am from the east coast, but I wanted the Saints to lose. Why root for the Saints? They are in the same division as the Falcons, that would be like rooting for the Phillies in the playoffs if the Braves get knocked out.

Directv and the Miami FOX station are both really dissing the people who pay for their services. This is Sat and Sunday that the NFL Playoffs are being blacked out because of their money dispute.
See? He’s already forgotten about us
January 15th, 20124:17 pm
I’m not cheering for either team but good luck VJ, Kat, Ward, & Tom.
Texans defense should move on and offense go home. They gave them every chance
2 years 10 mil is too much for Cody Ross. His numbers have declined 3 years in a row. That was his asking price over a month ago, he’s gonna have to settle for a 1 year deal with a option most likely. I’d like the Braves to offer a 1 year 3 mil deal with 1 mil in PA incentives or a option year.
January 15th, 20124:19 pm
Bad luck, VJ, Kat, Ward, & Tom
January 15th, 20124:22 pm
Wow, Rangers said they can afford to sign Darvish and Fielder, have interest in Oswalt as well.
January 15th, 20124:23 pm
Va I agree with you but I just don’t see Ross settling for that not until just before the start of spring training. I am thinking he is going to hold out for a multi-year deal as long as he can, unless someone gives him at least 7m+ for a 1 yr.
January 15th, 20124:25 pm
I have several selfish reasons I want the Giants to win and one other reason I want them to win.
January 15th, 20124:26 pm
I just want to see a cab vs. VJ showdown.
January 15th, 20124:28 pm
I think the absolute most he gets for a yearly salary is 4 mil. Coco Crisp just led the american league in Stolen bases and is a better defender and got 2 years 14 mil. Ross isn’t a everyday player.
January 15th, 20124:32 pm
So do I. The game would be in San Francisco. The Niners have beaten the Giants already this season and I like the match ups. It would mean one of us would have our team in the Super Bowl and we would both have a team to root for (even if one was more invested than the other)
January 15th, 20124:34 pm
Think about it were paying Martin Prado 4.75 mil there is no way Cody Ross makes more than him, Ross will provide good defense in all OF spots and hit around 260/320/420, possibly doing better in a pure part time role.
January 15th, 20124:37 pm
I know the money is not there, but if it were and these two players would sign affordable contracts to be bench players I am in favor of Juan Pierre and Cody Ross on the bench in place of Diaz and Constanza
January 15th, 20124:40 pm
Think about it were paying Martin Prado 4.75 mil there is no way Cody Ross makes more than him
You can’t compare a free agent to a second year arb guy. Not that I want to pay Ross more, but you’re doing Apples vs. Oranges.
January 15th, 20124:45 pm
true, but Ross doesn’t merit anything close to last years 6.3 million salary. He’s a backup/platoon type.
January 15th, 20124:52 pm
Va I agree with you IF the Braves have an offer on the table for Ross I don’t see it for more than 3m. Obviously none of the offers he has, he is exactly fond of, that is why he hasn’t signed.
It’s Apples vs. Jerky

OH, well mainline some more
January 15th, 20125:03 pm
Their Mongolian Beef was subpar, though
January 15th, 20125:05 pm
I can’t believe you ordered online and didn’t have it delivered.
PD I saw that post from Matt, and I was not going to bother with that nonsense. There is no sign of that.
McFann O O o
jeffrey d I actually had to call them yesterday!
“Delivery. What do you want?”
“Uh!…Uh…Y-ya got food there…??”
“Yes, we have food. What do you want?”
“Uuhh…gonna hafta hang up—I’ll call ya back!…[click]…Wasn’t ready for the trick question!…”

I would have if Domino’s wasn’t a half mile from my house
January 15th, 20125:09 pm
McFann – haha!! That’s part of the reason I was so enthusiastic about Domino’s online ordering.
hahaha….that’s got to be one of my favorite Gaffigan bits
Joe Buck gets more annoying with each passing season.
January 15th, 20125:10 pm
Did not use as much clock on that drive, but I guess I’m okay with the outcome…
I don’t get why people have beef with Joe Buck. He’s not bad
Wow. Packers D is just awful. As is Pats. 52-49 if they make it that far.
January 15th, 20125:12 pm
He yells too much.
January 15th, 20125:13 pm
Yeah, that one is hilarious…
Now whenever the pizza guy comes to our house, we’re always like, “He’s here! He’s here! OK, what do we do? What do we do??”
That sucks for the Giants. Can’t give Rodgers a short field.
January 15th, 20125:14 pm
McFann – I haven’t seen you online for a day or two and I left a link for you to see the details about a movie that I absolutely know you will love.
It’s The March of the Penguins. I watched it and from the start I thought about how much I knew you would enjoy it.
That whole delivery bit…I’m gonna have to listen to that tonight. Probably my favorite of all his bits

January 15th, 20125:19 pm
Here’s a rumor on the Braves …. oh yeah nothing
January 15th, 20125:20 pm
How is that not a fumble? WOW.
January 15th, 20125:21 pm
That is a fumble. Bad call for the home team Packers.
January 15th, 20125:22 pm
You’re not a fumble
January 15th, 20125:26 pm
I don’t much care for replays to begin with so it really burns me when they screw up the call anyway.
January 15th, 20125:27 pm
If you ever checked out The Angry Grandpa on YouTube, check his Extreme Meatballs episode. I am making them now, so far, so good.

Pineiro…Blanton…Kendrick. Uh oh, smelling a Cole Hamels trade for ‘prospects’ here.
January 15th, 20125:48 pm
Not exactly what I was hoping for there…
January 15th, 20125:49 pm
I do think Cole Hamels is gone after this year, however I don’t think they’d trade him for prospects. Detroit would make sense as a trade partner though(Turner, Castellenos).
January 15th, 20125:50 pm
We’re all gone after this week
That is a classic—I gotta watch or listen to it again, too…
Thanks! Actually saw that movie in the theaters—been a while, though…LOVE those baby penguins!!…

January 15th, 20125:53 pm
I believe the technical term for this game is “wild and woolly.”
Now let’s do something with that! (assuming the refs don’t overturn it without a challenge)…
January 15th, 20125:58 pm
Hey Bat, how can you root for the Giants? Didn’t Manning “game” the draft?
I was hoping for play-action on that down…
January 15th, 20126:01 pm
Let’s at least take the lead into the half…
January 15th, 20126:02 pm
I wouldn’t count on it. But then again, the last time I made a prediction, I ended up with the name doo doo for a year
January 15th, 20126:07 pm
I was not counting on it, but feeling a little bit better about the possibility now…
January 15th, 20126:10 pm
That’s why you don’t listen to Jeffrey Doo Doo
Glad that’s at the top of the page….
January 15th, 20126:11 pm
Yes he did. Some what different circumstance though. Still a valid point.
Pretty interesting thought on Cole Hamels. If they were to trade him it would make us the best team in the NL East IMO. I really dont think they can afford to pay Hamels, and were always saying the Phillies are getting old and have traded alot of prospects away and such. They could bring in a boat load of talent for Hamels if they wanted.
January 15th, 20126:12 pm
who dam giants
In the meantime, my inattention has led to Duke falling behind Clemson early. I will have to remedy that…
January 15th, 20126:14 pm
Packers defense is horrendous.
January 15th, 20126:15 pm
Packers defense is so bad and Eli Manning is a Top 5 QB. I’d take him over everyone except for the two guys he is outplaying(Rodgers and Brees), his brother(who he has as many Super Bowls as) and Tom Brady(who he beat in his Super Bowl win).
January 15th, 20126:27 pm
Chipper Jones is 45 walks away from joining the 1,500 walk club. He will be just the 18th player to accomplish this feat. For comparisons sake, 28 players have 3,000 hits.
Only 11 players in MLB history have more than 1,500 walks and less than 1,500 strikeouts. With just 1,358 strikeouts, Chipper can join this group by season’s end.
