As much as I loved the win yesterday, the Niners play calling was very suspect. Gore carried the ball 13 times, and that just isn’t going to get it done next week vs. the Giants or Packers. They have to run the ball more – and also Crabtree’s two drops really hurt them. Anyway, I don’t expect them to force 5 turnovers next week, however I do expect them to play better on offense. I’m rooting for the Giants today, really hoping they come out and win so we can get another home game. ;)

Still can’t believe the Yanks and Mariners made that sort of a trade. Really don’t see that sort of a deal made, and it makes me think perhaps it’d be a nice option to trade one of our young starters for an equivalent young bat. Could be something that happens within the next year, as the Braves could have like 10 starting pitching options this time next year: Hudson, Hanson, Jurrjens, Beachy, Minor, Teheran, Delgado, Medlen, Vizcaino, Gilmartin. Although like I said earlier, I don’t believe all ten of those guys have a shot of a) staying healthy or b) not being traded between now and then.

Efrim, it takes a pretty courageous GM or one who is confident in his job to trade your top prospects away. I am not sure Wren has that in him.

That was one hell of a game yesterday. I had the Saints pegged at 32 points but was way off on the Niners. I still can’t believe the Saints turned it over 5 times, I figured Brees would throw a couple of picks but credit the Niners, they just took the ball away.

Take a comparative look at the rookie LaSTELLA’s numbers in A compared to second year CHIPPER JONES in A. I really like what I’m seeing from the rookie right now.

TOMMY LaSTELLA – draft 2011 – position 2B — 2011 BA .328 – 2011 OBP .401 —- 2011 OPS .944 — BB 26 — SO 28 —- G 63 —– E 11

CHIPPER JONES —- draft 1990 — position SS — 1991 BA .326 — 2011 OBP .407 — 2011 OPS .925 —– BB 69 — SO 70 —- G 131 —– E 56

Posted this up last night just a little before 1:00 a.m. Doing it again because it really intrigued me. No idea what the relative strengths of the SALLY league were then and are now. No idea how many lefty-righties he faced as opposed to JONES.

LaSTELLA is 22, LH hitter. 5′ 11″ 185
JONES was 19, a switch-hitter. 6′3″ 200

BASEBALL AMERICA ranking

LaSTELLA unranked
JONES rank pre-1990 # 49

I am not sure Wren has that in him.

Yes, which is why I think Jurrjens is the likely candidate. I do see value in Jair staying with the team all year, however, Wren would be wasting assets if Jurrjens stays through to his free agency. So, I believe that is why Wren looked to cash in on Jurrjens this offseason – but, he just couldn’t find what he thought was fair value and I don’t believe he will, unless the Red Sox freak out, which I doubt.

They are such a physical team, on both sides of the ball. I love that the core of the team is so young. Offensive line, receivers, linebackers and secondary are all really young. I think they have the ability to win any game with how good they are on special teams and defense. Offensively, they can make enough plays.

“The Collapse” hurt the Braves in yet another way. Had the Braves made the playoffs, Jurrjens would have pitched a game (and either proved himself healthy or not).

That knee injury to Jurrjens meant that his value this offseason was not very high. Think about the haul Wren could have gained with a healthy Jurrjens that put up an entire 2011 (even if not as great in the second half as the first).

Lineup (Easily change it)

CF Bourn

LF Prado
SS Pastornicky

Bench – Ross, Hinske, Wilson, Diaz, Constanza

Rotation – Hudson, Hanson, Jurrjens, Beachy, Minor

Efrim, just kidding. You’re smart and you and I know it.

Tomahawkin, after you get over Wilson being possibly our only signing this winter, he makes sense. Good glove and after reading how he has already started to take Pastornicky under his wing, I’m thinking Wren maybe saw or heard about that and figured he’d be great for TP and signed him up.

Lineup same at last year, though how Heyward comes back could change it up. I could actually see Fredi switching he and Prado in the order at some point if JH is back to himself.

Would like to see tham get a guy like Ross mainly because I just don’t trust Diaz at all. Hinske stunk it up most all last year too.

Vabravesfan … I’m not convinced that Varvaro, Medlen, Pastornicky, Minor, or Constanza are guaranteed roster spots.

It’s possible Vizcaino is targeted for the bullpen rather than Varvaro or Medlen.

Minor could get out competed by Delgado (or even Medlen, although I doubt he’s in the running). Maybe Teheran figured out his breaking ball over the winter and comes in like the #1 prospect he’s supposed to be.

Pastornicky prolly has to lose the starting job, but he’s barely competed at AAA.

And surely with $1M, Braves could find something on the scrap heap to outcompete Constanza for fourth OF.

VaBravesFan

You really think Wren would try and trade a bullpen arm for a bench player. But why when players like Cody Ross and Wilson Betemit are out there still. With prices falling Ross could become a real option, Betemit should easily fit in our payroll right now. You keep Prado in LF, Betemit is Chipper’s backup. I think most of us would agree that Betemit is a better option to get alot of AB’s in place of Chipper over Diaz or Hinske.

Exactly, I forgot all about Vizciano. Just goes to show how much depth we have. I really don’t see them putting Mike Minor back in AAA if one of the young guns has a great spring. We have so much depth its nuts. Who knows with Pastornicky, Wren said he isn’t ready and then weeks later changes his mind so who knows. We have to figure someone gets hurt, Hanson or Jurrjens so Teheran and Delgado will get some starts. The whole Diaz/Constanza deal sucks. Diaz can’t play CF and has declined and lost his power. Constanza can play CF but IMO he shouldn’t be on a major league roster.

THawkin – I’m seriously doubting that Hinske ever plays third for the Braves this year. First base? A bit. Outfield? Yep, Might just platoon with Diaz in LF when Martin is playing third – which I would imagine might be a good bit this year. But I doubt we’ll see him at the hot corner.

I doubt that one start would have proven anything one way or the other with JJ.since he has had good spells for several months followed by injury again. It certainly wouldn’t have hurt but I don’t agree that it would have made all that much difference in the perception of other GMs.

Finding a solid bench player should have been the No.1 need for Wren this off season. I don’t think finding a backup CFer is that huge of a deal tho, Micheal Bourn is gonna play 150+ games. We need someone for when Chipper misses time to play 3rd of LF. My top 4 options at the beginning of free agency for such a roll were.

Andrew Jones signed for only 2 million. Would have been a perfect fit. RH power bat who crushes LHP. Better defender than Matty Diaz, could play a handful of games in CF or 1B as well. Great fit for a part-time roll.

Ryan Doumit signed for 3 million, Switch hitter who can play C/1B/LF/RF, Great production for a part-time guy.

Still have Cody Ross and Wilson Betemit out there.

nolie

January 15th, 2012
11:40 am

Betemit is kinda limited in decent defense, I like his bat as a backup but even at third he is not very good. I’ll be surprised if they go that route.

VaBravesFan

January 15th, 2012

Ryan Doumit actually would have been a awesome pick up. While he’s battled injuries over the years he was always pegged to be a starter. Make him a role player off the bench, most likely stay healthy. Would have been our 3rd catcher and given us flexibility with David Ross and pinch hitting. Added much needed power on the bench plus he’s versatile.

Glad you got something out of the read noles. I thought it interesting because his body type and age were more typical of a middle IF’er than CHIPPER. I’ll be right on this if GATTIS, LaSTELLA, SKINNER, GARCIA GILMARTIN and LAMM are all in LYNCHBURG to begin the season. The HILLCATS are only one forty-five from my front door. Closer than NORFOLK, D.C., or DANVILLE actually drive time. I expect the BRAVES to move TERDOSLAVICH and SIMMONS to MISSISSIPPI. A bit more problematic to visit.

And kudos to your SEMINOLES in b-ball yesterday. Nice.

VaBravesFan

Betemit is a average defender at best. But he’d only be playing 3rd base around 30 games or so depending on Chipper. Also Prado could still nab some starts at the hot corner as well. To give Hinske or whoever some ABs from LF. Betemit taking the spot Conrad had last season would be a big improvement. He’s prolly looking at a 1 yr deal around 2 million.

Lew

January 15th, 2012
11:52 am

VaBraves – As long as we have Prado, there is no need for Bate a meat. Rather than let Prado play LF all the time, we’d be better off getting someone to play LF when he’s at third – not the ther way around. He’s a much better defender at tird than in LF.

Betemit would be redundant as long as Prado’s here, IMO.

If the BRAVES move on CODY ROSS, they have to release DIAZ and pay him. Too expensive for JOHN MALONE’s budget constrained outfit. I would think a trade much more likely with DIAZ being the stumbling block.

BTW, let’s not lose sight of the fact that JACK WILSON played 2B for SEATTLE most of the time last season while he was in the northwest logging 342+ innings, 192 chances with only 2 E for a tidy .990 fielding percentage. I think that point represents the icing on the cake as to why WILSON is still a BRAVE. He plays 3B, SS, and 2B……well, a super utility guy. Now if he can tote the bags off the bus……oh right, not BULL DURHAM is it?

Much has been made about the Marlins’ and Nats’ signings this winter and the lack of those made by Atlanta. Maybe we need to look at this a bit differently.

First, both Florida and Washington has a lot of games to make uop to get close to the Braves, much less the Phillies.

Both had considerably lower payrolls than Atlanta to begin with (and considerably less attendance).

Most of the moves (Reyes excepted) were for pitching which both teams needed.

The Braves had fewer pressing needs. The Bravesa also didn’t need more pitching.

Not to mention that this has been a strange offseason. There are still Free Agents that – in past years – would already have deals. There have been fewer deals overall and several a result of the Marlins (finally) boosting payroll because of their stadium. The Yankees haven’t bought a huge Free Agent. The Red Sox have not made any appreciable deals despite their own tanking.

Very bizarre offseason this winter.

The Braves had fewer pressing needs.

True. As useless as these creatures are according to stat heads, Braves can use an RBI monster, or a few little RBI devils amounting to the said monster. OBP should improve this year from last year’s abysmal levels and a few timely hits driving in runs should take care of the glaring weakness from last year – ineffective offense.

You mean in the same way we felt about CONRAD remaining a BRAVE? if so, I’m inclined to agree. MATTY D wasn’t the same when he did his reprise last season. Maybe he reverts to his former glory. cricket – I’ve never been one to attribute futility to a hitting coach much in the past, but the comment I heard the other day attributed to a Brave around the batting cage where Martin claimed he was waiting for a hanging curve while letting two fastballs go down the middle of the plate tells me I might be wrong. The only place that approach comes from is flawed hitting coach. Maybe Greg Walker and Assistant WILL make a big difference.

Hi, Lew. Saw your little comment about Constanza yesterday. :)

I fully don’t expect him to be on the team coming out of ST. If he is, it will mean Wren hasn’t gotten us a backup outfielder who is capable of playing CF. I’m still holding out hope that he’ll sign Cody Ross, who I think would be a great addition to the bench.

Haven’t been on in a couple of days. Glad Martin was re-signed and and not unhappy about the Jack Wilson signing. He’s probably not much different than Alex (maybe a little less power), but cheaper, and in the grand scheme of things, that seems to be the Braves’ driving factor lately. If The Rev works out, he’s unlikely to be seeing much time at the plate anyhow.

For all you Springsteen Fans out there, here is what I found about the new album to be out soon:

DOB: I hope you got your tix for the upcoming tour! ;-)

“The Hollywood Reporter has quotes today from someone who has heard the new, “as-yet-untitled” and “terrific” Springsteen record. Judging by this earwitness account, it’s a wrecking ball of an album: “He gets into economic justice quite a bit. It’s very rock ‘n’ roll. He feels it’s the angriest album he’s ever made. Bear in mind, though, that [Springsteen] wrote and recorded the majority of the album before the Occupy movements started, so he’s not just setting headlines to music.”

Sonically, look for “unexpected textures — loops, electronic percussion,” according to the source, “an amazing sweep of influences and rhythms, from hip-hop to Irish folk rhythms.” The Hollywood Reporter also confirms that the album was produced by Ron Aniello.”

CB, we plan to do a bit of both. We’ll be staying close to Champion Stadium, but plan to go on a road trip the first day to catch the Braves @ the Nats. Then we’ll get to see them at home the next two days versus the Marlins and Mets. The next day will be spent at Disney, then we’ll head home the day after.

Actually season officially ends around Easter. Hotel Rates are low because the abundance of empty rooms. Rates are very competitive, but if you want to drop a wad on room rates you can begin with the Gaylord

Ravens defense looks old, imo. They are still great, though. Secondary is what makes them who they are. Their linebackers aren’t as good as they used to be.

March is a huge tourist month in Florida and the Orlando area is just busting. You will it to your liking if you are over 21. If you like to eat, drink cocktails, dance, go to live shows bring your bank president with you because there is so much nightlife there you will never see it all, but you can leave mighty broke

Also keep in mind this little ditty Locals like to say

Come down on vacation
go home on probation

cricket – I’ve never been one to attribute futility to a hitting coach much in the past, but the comment I heard the other day attributed to a Brave around the batting cage where Martin claimed he was waiting for a hanging curve while letting two fastballs go down the middle of the plate tells me I might be wrong. The only place that approach comes from is flawed hitting coach. Maybe Greg Walker and Assistant WILL make a big difference. LEW

Lew – someone posted an article being very critical of the Braves for NOT having anyone in the top 40 of players in the “Pitcher per Plate Appearance” (PPA) in 2011. Parrish, of course, was the hitting coach.

I went back and looked up 2010 when Terry Pendleton was the hitting coach. We all know that Pendleton taught a more patient approach and it certainly showed in the PPA rankings for 2010.
With Pendleton as HC the Braves had 4 of the top 10 hitters in PPA.

Who says the hitting coach doesn’t make any difference?

I made this statement yesterday which you thought I referring to you and thought I would clear it up. I certainly was not criticizing you and don’t have a clue as to where you lived.

Not down a canal 10 miles west of Ft. Lauderdale Beach but on the open water. — keylargo

What I meant was that in the worst year of my life I lived 10 miles west of the ocean on a canal in Ft. Lauderdale. The only way to get to the ocean in a boat was to go at idle speed through a giant maze of canals and waterways.

In the Keys I walk out to my deck, get in the boat and I’m in the Ocean and can go South to Cuba and north to the Florida mainland. And I can do this 12 months of the year.
