Couch Tater, I found it. What’s hilarious is that Nunez isn’t nearly enough for a pitcher like Jurrjens, even with an injured past. Nunez just isn’t very good….now that’s a return I wouldn’t be happy with.

Lots of question marks about Jair. They will probably get the best return at the deadline, if he shows good first half results. Of course, if the Braves are playing well, they may be reluctant to make a trade. May depend on the young guys performance, whether in AAA or out of the bullpen. See: Medlen

Given that it’s January 12th, I’d agree with that. Jurrjens is set to make around 5 million in 2012. If he’s traded, what exactly are you doing with the money? Cody Ross? I don’t see that. And as of right now, they have around a 87ish million payroll for 2012.

Also with Fielder not having that many ideal suitors, don’t be surprised if the Marlins get more interested. Fielder could be looking at a short term contract for a very high salary. You have to figure the Mariners will offer the best deal, but he doesnt want to play for them.

I could see Prince signing in Seattle if he has a Opt-out clause after 1 or 2 seasons. Maybe he can make them a contender and if not, he can re-test free agency. Prolly be more st base openings in a few years.

While I’m happy Wren didn’t give in and trade Prado or Jurrjens for crap, I’m not happy we haven’t signed a solid bench player. I’m sure we have around 2 to 4 million to spend. Upgrading over Diaz/Constanza or adding a solid backup 3rd baseman or a veteran Shortstop, one of those should have been done. Also Wren has said several times, he doesn’t need to make a trade to free up money… But then again he’s said Pastornicky isn’t ready only to change his mind weeks later. So whatever. I know the offseason isn’t over but up to this point, it seems Wren is content on hoping everything that went wrong last season changes for the better.
My top 2 Free agent targets still remain Wilson Betemit and Cody Ross. Common sense moves that upgrade this team and most likely will be in our ballpark in terms of price range. Longer they are free agents the lower the price drops. They are improvements over Diaz/Constanza or Sutton

We want to assure all of you that we are going to have a very competitive team for the upcoming season. This offseason was a success in that we did not “need” to make a trade because what we need is already here. Nothing offered to us was anything we were willing to consider. I said 1 of those should have been done. As of right now no free agent Shortstop is worth signing. I’m sure Hicks could produce just as much at the plate and provide solid defense as a backup. But I think the options of Cody Ross or Wilson Betemit are common sense upgrades. Either of them would reduce the playing time of Diaz of Constanza which is a positive. Either Ross plays LF when Prado is at 3rd or Betemit plays 3rd and Prado stays in LF fulltime. Sign 1 of them. Moylan made 2 million last year, they were not willing to pay him 2 mil for 2012. He’s looking at a deal under 1 mil with incentives from us. Maybe another team will gamble with more gaurenteed money.

“You wonder why fans can’t get involved with players, because they are here and gone,” Johnny Damon said.
I understand why Damon is upset and don’t blame him…but I find that line to be kind of ironic. Few players in baseball history have meant as much to a group of fans as he did when he was with the Red Sox. He was the hero of the greatest comeback in playoff history against their most hated rival and a very important member of the Red Sox first WS win in nearly a century. Red Sox fans couldn’t have been more “involved” with Johnny Damon…and he left them for THE YANKEES…over a few million dollars more. He had every right to do what was best for him, at the expense of Boston fans…but, at the end of his career, its a little weak to criticize the Rays for doing the same thing to him and the fans in Tampa.

for us, it was three man teams.
pitcher, catcher, and a outfiielder second base type guy.
the tree was first. you could lead off, but if the pitcher caught you while you were in the stretch and beaned you, you were out.
first to second was a long way. we called pitchouts..
right field was always dead. (automatic out.)
plus in my backyard we had the red monster. the house next to us. in left field.
hit the wood halfway up automatic double. hit it over dinger.
hopefully, you hit it all the way over if not the roof caught it and it was 50-50 whether or not the gutter got it.

Mark Bowman: http://markbowman.mlblogs.com/2012/01/12/braves-might-be-thankful-to-keep-both-prado-and-jurrjens/
Braves might be thankful to keep both Prado and Jurrjens
There have been numerous times during this offseason when I have been convinced the Braves would eventually trade either Martin Prado or Jair Jurrjens. Early on, there was reason to wonder if the Rockies would eventually package one of their young outfielders in a deal to acquire Prado or Jurrjens.
By the time December’s Winter Meetings concluded, there seemed to be a greater possibility of the Braves striking a deal with a pitching-hungry team that had not landed Mark Buehrle, C.J. Wilson or Yu Darvish. The belief was that once these pitchers were unavailable, there would be greater interest shown in Jurrjens.
The theory made sense. But over the past month some of these pitching-hungry teams have shown they believe their were better options – Mat Latos, Gio Gonzalez and now Hiroki Kuroda — than Jurrjens available.
So with a little more than five weeks remaining before the start of Spring Training, I’m now leaning toward believing both Prado and Jurrjens will be with the Braves at the start of the season. Yeah, I know I jinxed it, right? They’ll now probably both be dealt by the end of the weekend.
But seriously, I just don’t see it happening now. The Braves entered this offseason thinking they would only trade Jurrjens or Prado if they were blown away with an offer. As Spring Training nears, the odds of this kind of offer being made lessen.
It made sense for the Braves to at least evaluate what they might get in return for these arbitration-eligible players. But they might have been a little optimistic to believe Prado and Jurrjens still possessed the kind of value that would warrant a significant return.
Coming off a frustrating injury-plagued season marred by a staph infection, Prado still has the potential to hit .300 with 10-15 home runs on an annual basis. And his value increases when he once again becomes versatile infielder who primarily plays second base or third base.
Some clubs including the Tigers and Rockies have shown interest in Prado, but not enough to provide the Brave the kind of return they are seeking.
The same can be said in reference to Jurrjens, whose trade market value quickly diminished once his right knee became a problem after the All-Star break. Still I think it would have made more sense for the Reds to gamble on Jurrjens’ knee than Latos’ makeup.
But it really doesn’t matter what I think. The only thing that matters right now is that it appears both Prado and Jurrjens could be with the Braves at the start of this season.
This brings us right back to where we were in early November, when we discussed the great gamble the Braves would be taking if they traded either Jurrjens or Prado.
It’s great to have Julio Teheran, Randall Delgado and a wealth of young starting pitching. But with Brandon Beachy and Mike Minor the Braves projected rotation already includes a pair of pitchers with less than two full seasons of experience. This combined with health-related questions surrounding Tim Hudson and Tommy Hanson seemingly only increases the need to keep Jurrjens around a little longer.
Prado will never provide the kind of power clubs often hope to receive from a corner outfielder. But few will be surprised if he quickly regains the form that equates to consistency at the plate and the ability to produce the kind of quality at-bats that he produced before struggling with his confidence this past summer.
Some believe Prado’s struggles were a product of fatigue and others within the Braves organization believe he struggled under the direction of former hitting coach Larry Parrish. Either way, he was not the same guy he had been the previous few years.
After watching Prado take a number of first-pitch fastballs down the plate, a baffled Braves coach asked him what was happening. When Prado replied that he was “looking for (the pitcher) to hang a curve”, the coach walked away even more baffled.
In more ways than one, it was obviously a lost season for Prado.

Totally agree. Big trades happen prior to Christmas. Not in January. Free agent signings? Sure.

I think one of the keys in the Bowman article is that the Braves have not made the trades with Tigers, Rockies because the return in their opinion was not good enough. I personally do not have a problem with this at all. I would rather see Wren not make a deal then get taken in a trade. The advantage for the Braves with JJ and Prado is, if you are not willing to give up a relevant return, then we will hold on to our guys. They are valuable.

Right now he’s on the injury list too. Concussion. Elbow to the face in tuesday’s basketball game. O.k. then it’s BEACHY for JONES.

Nasty, a healthy Prado gives you an .810-.830OPS which is just fine for LF.

These chucks think they’ve got the BRAVES over a barrell. Too many good arms, not enough position players.
BTW, my curiosity regarding you guys has been satisfied. I would not consider JONES for BEACHY either. JONES hasn’t proven anything to me as an ORIOLE. Arms are worth more than position players anyway.

RC, yeah we’d have to be pretty creative on our side but I think it could be done. Although I doubt it will.

Adam Jones isn’t the solution for the price the O’s are throwing out there.

In regard to last night’s ball-game in which my grandson naturally wanted to play, “You see that logo you’re wearing {UVA]? I’m not going to let you screw that up for a basket-ball game. End of discussion.”

Maybe talks are intensifying because the Orioles asking price is down? I believe Rosenthal’s quote was that “talks were fluid” but that the Braves didn’t want to part with any of Minor, Teheran, Vizcaino or Delgado.

I didn’t notice this until today, but Dave Cameron actually wrote an article last week addressing the gap between the Braves fans’ view of Adam Jones, and the Orioles front office’s view of him. Without any comment of whether I agree or not (which I’m still thinking about), here it is:

Another way of looking at the trade is would you be happy with him now at the contract it would have taken to sign Teixeira?
This is an entirely unrelated point. The discussion of the trade and his value at time of trade is the issue. Everyone knew the Braves weren’t going to resign him. The real other way of looking at this trade is, would you rather have Kotchman or the extra draft picks the team would have had they held on and let him walk in the off-season? Just about any thing would have been a better return than Kotchman for Teixeira. Wren handicapped himself in those talks by demanding a first baseman back instead of simply aiming for the best talent in return.

Wren mentioned when he aquired Bourne that he wanted to add speed to the Braves. IMO, that would mean that he’ll look at guys like Jones and others to add to the mix of the Braves. It’ll be interesting to see just who he adds, if anyone, before ST.

Finally watched Moneyball last night. The movie is very entertaining to the point of being overly likable, especially when considering the subject material (baseball). But I actually liked the book better as the film didn’t go into the same richly detailed subject matter of statistics.
Of course , I totally disagree with Beane’s ignoring the importance of great defense. Which has killed many an A’s team in the playoff’s. However, hits + walks does lead to more base runners, which leads to more runs scored. In turn driving up pitch counts, getting into opposing teams bullpens earlier while seeing more inferior pitching. Of course, all Beane really did was reinvent Whitey ball with a better statistical analysis.

There’s always room for depth isn’t there?
We can’t do nothing(double negative) all offseason…

I’m not exactly sure where Jones would improve this club.
