With the Falcons doing their thing(again), the best I can hope for is another West Coast meltdown for the Saints. I’m pulling for the niners as I do appreciate defense and I would also appreciate greatly the Saints losing.

Can we get a Yes/No vote on whether we are going to hold jeffrey to the doo doo for 2012?
Jim Schwartz with the quote of the weekend talking about the Lions loss: “This game was about missed opportunities on defense.”
No, Jim, it was about your defense and it’s inability to tackle, get pressure on the quarterback, stop the run, or prevent the Saints from running up 626 yards of total offense. That’s a bit more than “missed opportunities”
One World Championship (1995 Braves World Series Championship) to show for all those seasons of play….with no realistic hope of any Atlanta sports team willing one in the near future.
Ironically enough I think the Braves are Atlanta’s best chance at winning a championship. Our pitching is solid, if not for a complete offensive letdown last year we would have been in the dance. Seemingly all of our biggest bats (and the lesser ones) gave us less than average production. As fans I think we hope for better than average performances and settle for average but I don’t think any of us imagine subpar years for the majority of the lineup. Prado, McCann, Heyward, Uggla, and Gonzalez. That was most of the team. If we just get average performances we could be a very dangerous team given our pitching. We won’t be ranked as the favorites to win it all, but how many favorites actually win it all? Besides being a favorite might as well be a death nail for an Atlanta team. Barring major injuries I think the braves are in good shape for the most part.
1. Signing Derek Lowe to a 4 year, $60 mil contract.
2. Signing Kawacrappy to a 3 year/ $23 mil contract.
3. Trading for McLousy and paying him $15 mil over 3 years (buyout included)
4. Re-signing Chipper to a 3 year/$42 mil contract.
That’s $140 mil over 4 years (2012 included) that could have been better spend in other areas that would have given us a much better chance of seriously competing for a World Series championship.
Not only do we need new ownership…we need a new GM…and John S. and company need to go as well. Hopefully after we collapse in 2012….change will come.
I mean, they have three really good pitching prospects, a polished LH starter who has a #3/4 ceiling, a high floor SS in Pastornicky and then some upside guys in Simmons, Bethancourt and Salcedo. After that it’s a mixed bag of meh.
Yeah Jake, I don’t think it bothers anyone if we talk football here. You make valid points about the defense and the linebackers. I like VanGorder, and loved him when he was with the Dawgs, I’m just beyond frustrated with the third and long failings.
I still remember the final nail in the coffin in the playoff game with the Cardinals, four years ago, was the Cards converting on 3rd and nineteen.
Whaddya think of Terdoslavich? He strikes me as a very confident kid. Not really a Pete Rose type player, but with that sort of drive. Talks about how being a major leaguer is all he and his dad have ever dreamed about.
Of course he’s our prospect, so I love him for that. But I think we’ll see how he does in AA next year.
They just extended Morales and it looks like they want to do the same with Aybar. Izturis is expendable. Obvious the only hole they have on that solid team is some pen help.
I can understand why a lot of folks don’t care for the NBA. And I don’t have issues with that. Kinda like how I could care less about hockey and soccer. Just my preferences.
But I was big on the NBA when I was a kid, and I’ve pulled for the Warriors (Run DMC) in the 80’s, the Rockets (Hakeem the Dream) in the 90’s and now the Jazz (J-Slow still rocks) in the 00’s. Just being this close to a decent team helps. And there are no real pre-madonna’s on our team which helps.
Jake W……our so called pitching strength is a pipe dream.
1. Hudson’s back injury makes him far from a sure thing.
2. Jurrjens’ knee…same thing.
3. Hanson’s shoulder…same thing as well.
4. Beachy…..coming off injury in 2011.
5. Minor and Teheran…both very hittable pitchers who have yet to prove they can consistently get out ML hitters.
7. Medlen…..while I’m actually high on Medlen, he is coming off an elbow injury that required him missing most of 2011.
One other thing to factor in. It is assuming a lot that the trio of Kimbrel, Venters and EOF will be as dominant as they were the first 5 months of 2011. Relievers who are overused one year…have been known to struggle the following year. If many on here are going to assume that Prado and Heyward are going to rebound in 2012…then you should also assume the possibility that Kimbrel, Venters and EOF wont be as effective in 2012.
Our pitching is a huge question mark. Injuries, age, inexperience are all issues that could blow up our season.
DS1, there is more than “meh”, I guess. Terdoslavich, Ahmed, Drury, Lipka, Milligan, La Stella, C. Perez, and tons of kids that could project as relievers in Graham, Martin, Lamm, Moore. They are just all out of the top 8 I listed above. I’m hoping for a real good draft in 2012. But to answer your question, there is still A LOT of questions around Joey T.
I’m just beyond frustrated with the third and long failings.
Unfortunately I think the 3rd and longs play into our big weakness. Other teams know since they are likely passing on 3rd and long to bring extra protection and if we can’t create pressure it all falls on the secondary which is the major weakness on the defense.
Oh and the Arz game I remember fondly as the last game with Keith Brooking, now he underachieves in Dallas.
I grew up a die hard Lakers fan, watching Magic, Kareem, James Worthy and the like play beautiful basketball. I was devastated the day Magic announced he was retiring. Was also a huge Sac Kings fan for a while. But the game has become something unwatchable to me these days. I’d rather watch college basketball or just about any other pro sport.
Have never watched Tebow play before (maybe saw him in college once or twice). Don’t really have a horse in the race, but I pull for Tebow because so many people don’t. Just going for the underdog.
And I like a person that takes a stand. (now, if he could just throw better……… I’ve heard that’s his Achilles heel?)
Gotta admit that I am kind of excited that Barry Sanders’ kid committed to Stanford. Should be fun to watch, if he’s even 1/3 of the player his daddy was…
Those series in the early 2000’s that they had with the Lakers got me hooked. I had interest before that but those were some classic series. Having the Hawks be somewhat competitive has definitely kept my interest.
Those series just about killed me. Still remember some of the horrible calls that went against the Kings in Game 6…not sure what year, but the play involved Doug Christie getting hit in the face with Kobe’s elbow and the ref calling a foul on Christie
I wouldnt want the Braves to trade Venters, just saying a team like the Angels who are going all in would prolly offer a great return that would be enough to consider.
I loved the Kings back then and it made me despise the Lakers. They had some fantastic playoff games. Kings fans had their hearts broken just like us so many years in a row.
My biggest pet peeve about the NBA is the “superstar calls”. The way I see it is if they are that great they don’t need the help. The inequity in officiating is definitely my biggest frustration with the league. Derrick Rose can get tapped and draw a foul, Teague can be thrown out of bounds and nothing.
Yup, lots of Gore. Love what I’ve seen from Kendall Hunter this year. First four picks: Aldon Smith, Colin Kaepernick, Chris Culliver and Kendall Hunter. Hit it big on all of them, although obviously Colin is an unknown entity – but I’ve heard great things.
That original Arco Areno that was built as a temp home for the Kings, was a wild and extremely LOUD place. I think it only held about 10K folks, but the flooring was wooden and the fans would stomp like there’s no tomorrow!
I loved the Kings back then and it made me despise the Lakers. They had some fantastic playoff games. Kings fans had their hearts broken just like us so many years in a row.
The East was horrible back then too. You just knew if the Kings got by the Lakers they would win it all. Just a shame for those fans because that was a great team. Tough to fall just short so many times.
Went to plenty of games at Arco- the wood floors were awesome. Place was the loudest arena I have ever been in, especially during a play off game against the Lakers…
It’s sort of amazing that once The Owner and Her Husband turned day to day control of the Niners over to Jed, the team began a steady improvement, from personal decisions to management decisions to play on the field. Jed is his uncle all over again. Thank God for that.
I think much of the craziness here comes from fans who are more ijnto football than really into baseball as a sport
I definitely agree with this. The NFL and MLB couldn’t be further apart in terms of sports. One loss can kill you in football, in baseball you just have 162 games. Series in the playoffs instead of one and done. The patience required to be a baseball fan is just not there.
Lots of Steeler fans in Denver. A lot of Yellow Towels.
i guess if you mean a person always on the go and getting things done you could spell it do do, but iffen you mean someone full of it like Jeffrey is you should probably use doodoo
ChattTownBrian: I guess you entirely missed the point, the sarcasm, related to the italicized comment I referenced. Understandable that you would (but not really).
Football is, by it’s very nature, a violent sport and it elicits a more volatile response from fans. I tend to get screechy and ranty and drop curse words that I didn’t even know I could string together when I am watching football. Baseball is a much more congenial sport, and the fan base, while as passionate as any about their team, responds in a similar manner.
We are never going to have a real winner in this city. Even the beloved Dawgs are at the pretty good but not elite category.
The 1990’s Braves are the only pro team that has ever given us anything elite to cheer about. I know, only one WS championship but the did get to 5 WS and that should count for more than given credit for.
The Dawgs have not been a real elite program since the early 80’s when you really think about. Pretty good at times, but not a serious BCS champ contender like Alabama, LSU, and Florida has been. Even Auburn and Tennessee has given their fans more than the Dawgs give us.
We are all in a cursed state and it cannot work for us.
You want to move away from Mike Smith and Matt Ryan? Well, remember the Leeman Bennett firing and look what we got after that.
The Hawks have the monopoly on being fairly good (except for the time between 2000 and 2007. They can be fun to watch but do not expect too much.
And my Thrashers, I miss em but you know the story.
We are cursed and its never gonna work for us not for a billion yrs. As sports fans this state is the Hades of being a sports fan and it cannot ever be done.
These announcers are really bad. The Steelers did NOT challenge if it was a fumble- they challenged if it was complete. Which it WAS NOT! Even if the ball is allowed to move, IT CAN’T BE DROPPED!
But just in case you’re one of the millions of Americans who forgot to purchase that distinctive work of American literature, I can pass along a few highlights:
• Larkin won nine Silver Sluggers. You know how many infielders have won more in the history of the award? Exactly one: Alex Rodriguez (who won 10).
• Larkin also made 12 All-Star teams. Want to guess how many shortstops in history ever made more than 12? That would be two luminaries named Calvin Ripken Jr. and Ozzie Smith.
• And the accolades didn’t stop there. Larkin won an MVP award, three Gold Gloves in a row (while Ozzie was still active) and both major off-the-field awards that honor character and contributions to the planet beyond the ballpark — the Roberto Clemente and Lou Gehrig awards.
• This man also brought a unique power/speed package to his position. His .815 OPS ranks sixth among all shortstops in the live-ball era who got at least 5,000 plate appearances. He was a 30-30 Club member who was also the answer to the trivia question, “Name the only shortstop to steal 50 bases in any season in the ’90s.” And his 83.1 percent stolen-base success rate ranks fifth among all modern members of the 200 SB Club.
• But it’s when you start comparing Larkin to his peers that you truly begin to comprehend why they’re about to start chiseling his plaque. That .815 career OPS was 137 points higher than the average shortstop of his era (.678). His .444 career slugging percentage was 83 points higher. His .371 OBP was 54 points higher. And his .295 lifetime average was 39 points higher. In other words, even factoring in his (gulp) 14 trips to the disabled list, Larkin towered above his fellow shortstops in a way no NL shortstop has since the days of Arky Vaughan, back in the 1930s and ’40s
So there’s an expression we use to describe players like that, ladies and gentlemen. And it goes like this:
I see the Angels have given a well deserved extension to Howie Kendrick. Good for him.
That is what teams who are trying to win do, and they stepped up and are trying to get better after two disappointing years.
Not a Halos fan but have to say good luck to them. I like teams that keep their pieces together and give it the good old try. I like it when guys who have been with an org get extensions from their team they put in their time with.
Hate to say it Falcons fans, but nothing made more happy as a Chiefs fan than watching Tony Gonzalez mope off the field after that crushing loss.
Chiefs would have won the AFC West with Gonzalez on their team. And would be playing at home right now against a beat up Steelers team. But he didn’t have “time” to wait for a rebuild.
Hope the dude never wins a playoff game. Am I bitter? You’re damn right I am. Good riddance. Go to the HOF as a Falcon as far as I’m concerned.

I wouldnt want the Braves to trade Venters, just saying a team like the Angels who are going all in would prolly offer a great return that would be enough to consider.

Only went to a few games there though……..

The East was horrible back then too. You just knew if the Kings got by the Lakers they would win it all. Just a shame for those fans because that was a great team. Tough to fall just short so many times.

This was one of my favorite plays in NBA history. Kobe had been elbowing Raja the whole series, and he’d had enough of it.
Raja can score 0 points per game all year, and he can STILL be the starting “2″ on my team ALL year because of this play!!

It’s sort of amazing that once The Owner and Her Husband turned day to day control of the Niners over to Jed, the team began a steady improvement, from personal decisions to management decisions to play on the field. Jed is his uncle all over again. Thank God for that.

Jayson Stark
Hall of Famer.
