Aside from the guys who won’t be eligible in 2012(Teheran, Vizcaino, Delgado, Pastornicky), here the list of other prospects to keep an eye out for in the Braves system:
Gilmartin, Simmons, Bethancourt, Salcedo, Spruill, Drury, C. Perez, Hoover, Lipka, Ahmed, Graham, Terdoslavich, Milligan, Cunningham, My. Jones, La Stella, Kubitza, Bullock, Martin, Lamm, Moore, C. Franco, Gil, Pacheco
ARK it would but would DET make that trade. I like the thinking and if it gets us the money to sign Yoennis so much the better.
2012 would then be a semi-skip year where post season was a maybe but 2013 all guns could be blazing. If Yoennis can handle ML pitch esp breaking stuff then 2012 could be very good as well.
I just wonder if Wren and the FO are going avoid Yoennis like the plague due to the Yankees and others circling him.
From what I have read the Sox are passing, the Yankees are iffy and it is the Blue Jays, Pirates and possibly the Marlins who are planning to make an offer.

Ozzie, I’m not sure I’d say 2012 would be a skip year. I think our team would be stronger with that trade and signings. We’d be much deeper on the bench and in the minors. The pitching would be the only place we may take a hit but we’re pretty deep there to avoid much of a let down.

Prado and JJ to Detroit could net us our future CF in Jackson. A top 100 mlb prospect and possible replacement when Chipper retires in Castellanos, plus 2 or 3 more good prospects. It would also remove somewhere around 12 million off our payroll. We could then sign Cespedes as our 4th outfielder and allowing him to learn the game with less stress since he wouldn’t have to play immediately. Then sign someone like Betemit and Tejada to serve as depth off the bench.

Yes, Tomahawkin, that was an “unwarranted, out-of-nowhere cheap-shot.” Again.
Efrim he banned you from his site repeatedly because you are a jerk and funny how you still are following him on twitter? Just can’t let loose of him can you? You are being spitefull. Scorned by Bill. Lol
I read that piece by Shanks this morning and agreed with it, too. In fact, it ticked me off so bad, that I wrote an email to Liberty Media to vent my frustrations, for whatever good that did.
What if J.J. wins 20 games, and the players we get don’t work out? I believe J.J. could be the ace on the staff. Just sign some player that will get you by. There’s a good Free Agent Market out there still.
Our payroll is exactly in line with our attendance. When we spent more, attendance was on a downward trend for years. You folks are asking someone to be willing to lose money. It’s one thing to ask, but then to be all indignant when they don’t? There ain’t many Mark Cuban’s in the world. Most willing to lose money also want to help run the show. Look around; it doesn’t work.
While I don’t agree with you (and I know this’ll read bad ’cause of our history), I genuinely think you folks that are so concerned should all forward such emails. Perhaps some version of yours that the masses here could tweak and send along. If Liberty Media got enough of ‘em, maybe they’d get rid of the headache. Surely, two is better than one, right?
Efrim he banned you from his site repeatedly because you are a jerk and funny how you still are following him on twitter?
Never been to his site, other than today to read an article. Never been banned from it, because I don’t really visit it.
Shanks told the truth whether we like it or not.
I disagree. I am perfectly fine with where our major league payroll is at this moment. I’d like more spending on the draft and in international players, however that’s changed now with the rules. It could be a lot worse than Liberty Media. A lot worse.
Folks, a more passionate owner could make things worse, do you not see what occurs in Baltimore and what occurred in Houston? Chicago, with Reinsdorf? Shanks clearly does not see this, or understand what those passionate owners have done to their franchises. The White Sox system sucks every single year, because Jerry Reinsdorf does not believe in prospects or paying minor leaguers bonuses, at all.
“Never been to his site, other than today to read an article. Never been banned from it, because I don’t really visit it.” – Efrim
Dammit. I was hoping there was a whole story behind this. Could’ve kept me entertained all afternoon. .. Mike, are there two Efrim-named Braves fanatics? How’d that dude feel about the scouting system’s new direction? Penguins fan? DH?
I used to write for an old website called Bravesbeat.com, and I remember the guy who ran the site (I think his name was Merv) complaining all the time about Shanks and his pay-to-read sites. I’m not a big fan of his stuff either. Mostly because there’s not much of interest that you don’t have to pay for.
WARNING – THIS IS NOT KNOCKING THE JOB FRANK WREN HAS DONE – I’m sorry, but it was Frank Wren’s decision to not have financial flexibility this winter. He made trades for Dan Uggla and Michael Bourn, gave Chipper an extension, signed Derek Lowe to a four year, 60 million dollar deal. That’s why we don’t have financial flexibility right now. Payroll has hovered around the low 90’s for quite some time. Wren is aware of this. We have payroll flexibility next year.
if I were Wren I would just stop talking to Colorado right now. They are not evidently going to budge on their OF prospect or pitching prospect to go with Smith, and Smith just really is not a big enough upgrade to make the trade anyway. I would focus on KC and Detroit to see if something can get done. If not, I do not make the trade at this time but still sign Cody Ross and Wilson Betemit
The problem is everyone was spoiled with Turner. He’s not your typical owner. Most owners see owning a team as only a financial vessel. The few that are fanatics tend to meddle more than they should. From what I’ve always read, it sounds like Ted was a perfect blend, a huge fan that visibly supported the team while letting the baseball people he hired handle the business of baseball.
“I am perfectly fine with where our major league payroll”
Seriously. Look around the league. Would I like more? Sure. I’d like five million dollars, Charlize Theron, and some sort of combination mind control/anti-aging/mute switch that works on Charlize Theron. Don’t mean it’s reality.
this is more for discussion purposes as I am curious to what the regulars think…….The Angels have said they are not signing Madson though they still need a closer What from the Angels would be a reasonable ransom from the Angels for Johnny venters and would you do the trade if you are Frank Wren?
Bourjos, Aybar, and a prospect for Venters and Pastornicky?
A trade of Venters anywhere would be a bold move but could let the Braves address SS short term, LF short term, and CF long term
BAS, No problem with you disagreeing. I went to their site and filled in a form for the email, so I can’t post it here verbatim.
Some of the points I made were:
-My disappointment with the lack of player transactions this off-season in light of the collapse and the marked improvements by teams within out division.
- The news that Pastornicky would be the starting SS after Wren publicly stated he wasn’t ready in early November.
-The reported shopping of two very good players who aren’t currently at their peak value for inferior ones with smaller salaries.
-I chided them for not providing a bit more financial support to the team when they make billions in profits and asked them to please sell the team to someone who cares about it because the fans deserve that.
If anyone else would like to vent, here is the site where I contacted them. I agree with BAS, the more, the merrier.
Sure. I’d like five million dollars, Charlize Theron, and some sort of combination mind control/anti-aging/mute switch that works on Charlize Theron
Jessica to be more consistent in picking up her friggin phone, more prospects with upside, Crosby to not have anymore headaches, a Time machine to get back right before Alex Smith went #1 instead of Aaron Rodgers. I’d like a lot of things.
Brava, I will agree that this offseason has been frustrating, especially coming off of our collapse. Any slow offseason will make you heated, unless your team just won a World Series. Just gotta remember that it’s a talented roster in the weaker league. We’ll be fine.
The Angels have said they are not signing Madson though they still need a closer What from the Angels would be a reasonable ransom from the Angels for Johnny venters and would you do the trade if you are Frank Wren?
How about signing Madson to a one year deal so he could stick it to the Phillies this season?
……..and the Braves would have the best bullpen of all time!!!! (not happening, I know)
You have a faceless owner with not a heartbeat behind Liberty, I am against ANY corporation owning a franchise. I understand the payroll is equitable, I just want to see Real people behind the teams. Flaws or no flaws. Corporations are taking over the world, do they have to take over the games we love?
Efrim, it is frustrating because, with the inaction, we are losing ground within a division where the best we could hope for the past few years was second place. Sorry if I’m not comforted by the assurances of the same folks who said there was no way the Braves would blow their huge WC lead in September.
Efrim there are some good sites out there and some really bad ones. The Internet has evolved to give us fans a voice to exchange baseball info. I remember when I played baseball before the Internet even we had to wait until Athlons, Mazeroskis, The Sporting News to name few came out every February at the bookstores to get our baseball fix, yes players kept up back then too.
I hope a trade or free agent signing occurs soon as well, however I’m not upset that Liberty Media owns this team and they aren’t the reason for the lack of activity this winter.
I wholeheartedly agree, brother. What I’d really like is some sort of Packers-model, where the fans own all or part of the team. It’s a shame we can’t figure a way in (they’d never willingly let us), ’cause with the money fans spend… But, as you said, anything but a corporation.
A Slow offseason means that Frank Wren will be Active During S. Training or right at the Trade Deadline, Bank On It!
Once we get a season ending injury to a position player or an opposing teams starter gets injured, then Wren’s phone will be off the hook…figuratively…
What’s wrong with corporations? Companies like Exxon, Coca-Cola, Miscrosoft, Apple, WalMart each employ tens of thousands of workers who receive a regular paycheck, free (or mostly free) health insurance, and a 401k retirement plan with a company match.

I still submit that “Major League” has the funniest TV edit ever, when Dorn is talking to Vaughn on the mound in the final game
That edit always sticks in my mind. Always drop that on my brother when we watch a ball game together.
But I think just about any TV airing of a Samuel Jackson film is going to be loaded with hilarious edits. Snakes on a Plane…. didn’t care much for that movie until it aired on FX with all the edits. I was dying laughing. “….monkey fighting snakes on this Monday to Friday plane…”

I vowed not to mess with such a “bad azz womanizer hunk of a man,” but since flange, raleigh, and DAP bought into your nonsense, I’ll try.
Sir (since you seem to take exception to ‘dude’), your 9:21 was a nice comeback. Mocking, funny, concise. Even your 9:53, at least with the sugar stuff. But, we both know what you meant by ‘POS.’ Anybody reading the string of posts would see that. Positive and pudding, huh? Right…
Perhaps you should leave vocabulary from “the Black community” to Tomahawkin; it seems he has a better grasp on it than you do. I didn’t think such a person existed.
Yes, Tomahawkin, that was an “unwarranted, out-of-nowhere cheap-shot.” Again.

I wholeheartedly agree, brother. What I’d really like is some sort of Packers-model, where the fans own all or part of the team. It’s a shame we can’t figure a way in (they’d never willingly let us), ’cause with the money fans spend… But, as you said, anything but a corporation.

What’s wrong with corporations? Companies like Exxon, Coca-Cola, Miscrosoft, Apple, WalMart each employ tens of thousands of workers who receive a regular paycheck, free (or mostly free) health insurance, and a 401k retirement plan with a company match.
