Aside from the guys who won’t be eligible in 2012(Teheran, Vizcaino, Delgado, Pastornicky), here the list of other prospects to keep an eye out for in the Braves system:
Gilmartin, Simmons, Bethancourt, Salcedo, Spruill, Drury, C. Perez, Hoover, Lipka, Ahmed, Graham, Terdoslavich, Milligan, Cunningham, My. Jones, La Stella, Kubitza, Bullock, Martin, Lamm, Moore, C. Franco, Gil, Pacheco
January 5th, 20121:15 pm
I did get the ages wrong, he must be early 50s now, but he did have some good years with us.
January 5th, 20121:16 pm
ARK it would but would DET make that trade. I like the thinking and if it gets us the money to sign Yoennis so much the better.
2012 would then be a semi-skip year where post season was a maybe but 2013 all guns could be blazing. If Yoennis can handle ML pitch esp breaking stuff then 2012 could be very good as well.
I just wonder if Wren and the FO are going avoid Yoennis like the plague due to the Yankees and others circling him.
From what I have read the Sox are passing, the Yankees are iffy and it is the Blue Jays, Pirates and possibly the Marlins who are planning to make an offer.
2 a.m. or so last night, ready for bed, but channel-surf and land on Pulp Fiction on cable, Christopher Walken “gold watch” monologue. Hour later, “Zed’s dead, baby. Zed’s dead.” That movie never gets old. Couldn’t turn it off, even though I have it on DVD….
January 5th, 20121:17 pm
Keith Law is constantly wrong on minor league players.
No, he’s actually pretty good. As are most of the prospect guys out there right now.
January 5th, 20121:19 pm
Ozzie, I’m not sure I’d say 2012 would be a skip year. I think our team would be stronger with that trade and signings. We’d be much deeper on the bench and in the minors. The pitching would be the only place we may take a hit but we’re pretty deep there to avoid much of a let down.
It was a great movie, can’t count the times I have watched it.
January 5th, 20121:20 pm
That movie never gets old.
Vincent: Jules, if you give that f###in’ nimrod fifteen hundred dollars, I’m gonna shoot him on general principles.
Top 5 favorite movie for me. Braveheart, Shawshenk Redemption in there too. Love ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’ as well. Although pretty sure that’s just because of the first 30-40 minutes.
January 5th, 20121:22 pm
Can Tim Raines please just make the HOF? Please?
January 5th, 20121:23 pm
VaBravesFan: I disagree and The Blue Jays Do as well. I will Believe the Braves Scouts and Organization over anything that Keith Law has to say. His personality has never bothered me, but as is most draft and player analyst’s, he is remembered for his hits rather than his misses.
January 5th, 20121:27 pm
after Yunel’s “attitude” and the bust that was Kawakami, I don’t see the Braves making a big play for an expensive “ML ready” Cuban OF with no minor league experience
January 5th, 20121:30 pm
the Braves do need to be more aggressive at some points in the draft. The last few drafts are too stocked with low ceiling, higher floor safer picks. We need some picks that are higher ceiling high school type picks. Spend money on the draft and player development. It is much cheaper to draft and develop your own players than sign expensive free agents to Powerball type contracts. Of course some will flame out but that is why you can never have too many prospects
brian, your probably right but I’d like to see them do it.
January 5th, 20121:31 pm
I will Believe the Braves Scouts and Organization over anything that Keith Law has to say.
Why would the Braves scouts or player development people say bad things about their prospects? What do they have to gain upon using negative statements regarding their minor league talent? Of course everything they say of their prospects will be glowing, however it’s fun to read other sources of knowledge on the subject, who may not have a bias opinion on the matter.
January 5th, 20121:36 pm
loving the Marlins clubhouse wtih Hanley, Big Z, Reyes and Ozzie – there should be some sweet meltdowns to watch this year.
January 5th, 20121:37 pm
Prado and JJ to Detroit could net us our future CF in Jackson. A top 100 mlb prospect and possible replacement when Chipper retires in Castellanos, plus 2 or 3 more good prospects. It would also remove somewhere around 12 million off our payroll. We could then sign Cespedes as our 4th outfielder and allowing him to learn the game with less stress since he wouldn’t have to play immediately. Then sign someone like Betemit and Tejada to serve as depth off the bench.
January 5th, 20121:38 pm
“loving the Marlins clubhouse wtih Hanley, Big Z, Reyes and Ozzie – there should be some sweet meltdowns to watch this year.”
It’s a strong possibility the Marlins could finish last in the division with that clubhouse.
January 5th, 20121:39 pm
Buster_ESPN Buster Olney
Wade Davis’s ERA vs. BOS/NYY/TOR — 4.57. Versus all other teams, in first 2-plus years in majors–4.08. His name has come up in trade talks.
Wonder if the Rays would be willing to trade in their division to a team like Toronto.
January 5th, 20121:40 pm
By all accounts Yoennis as a fantastic attitude, work ethic and no ego. He is putting everything he has into getting into the ML and doing well.
Kawa was already washed up and Yunel was a prima donna. Yoennis will make about what we paid McLouth per year. I suspect he will put up better numbers for 7mm or so per.
January 5th, 20121:42 pm
Of course, best use of Wade Davis is outside of the AL Eastern division, if you are looking to acquire him.
January 5th, 20121:43 pm
Efrim: It is much easier from Keith Law and other analyst”s to predict the top 100 prospects in baseball, but we all know that fail a lot of the time. Law proved to be a poor scout for the Blue Jays and was fired. I think most fans that keep up with prospects could go year to year being fairly accurate on picking the top 100 prospects in baseball. It is the scouts and personel people in the Braves Organization that have found the Beachy’s, Jurrjens, etc. that I trust WAY above Keith Law and any other of the internet and MLB channel analyst’s.
The Braves moved Terdoslavich unexpectedly to the AFL because they saw something in him(a very good swing) and wanted to see how he manage jumping up in competition aganst guys that had played at levels above him. He did quite well it looked like to me.
We will see how it plays out, but when have you seen any of the Law’s, Mayo’s Etc. call themselves out on all the predictions they got wrong?
By all accounts Yoennis as a fantastic attitude, work ethic and no ego. He is putting everything he has into getting into the ML and doing well.
Kawa was already washed up and Yunel was a prima donna.
So you are going to call Yunel out for being a prima donna, but have no problem with a player who has never played an inning in the majors, yet has already released 2 videos of over 30 minutes a piece touting how awesome he is, including one that has him pretending to save Ahmad Green from a raging river?
Certainly sounds like a guy with no ego….
January 5th, 20121:46 pm
Hello everyone! I bet I could leave the blog for two months come back, and everyone would still be talking about trading Prado,or J.J. little humor.
RC, that was strictly by coincidence.. lucky for Green, Yoennis was filming that day close to the raging river.
January 5th, 20121:48 pm
Had to put our cat to sleep sad day,but will get over it. Cat got reaaly sick.
January 5th, 20121:49 pm
Law proved to be a poor scout for the Blue Jays and was fired.
Was he fired or did he leave on his own terms? And do you know that cat that was running the place at the time? JP isn’t exactly the most sane person in the world, ya know?
Ward, sorry to hear that.
January 5th, 20121:52 pm
Come on, folks, unless Cespedes is standing knee deep in a dumpster ten years from now (and Frank Wren is still in their employ), there’s no way the Braves are going to sign him.
January 5th, 20121:54 pm
If you have ever seen the TV edit of Pulp Fiction when Jules is asked which wallet is his. He say’s the one that say’s Bad Mother Friend. I can’t tell how hard I laughed. Got to love TV edits.
What’s the over/under for how many games before Zambrano and Hanley Ramirez get into it?
January 5th, 20121:56 pm
Arkansas-Fist time I ever had to do that,but I’ll be O.K.
I still submit that “Major League” has the funniest TV edit ever, when Dorn is talking to Vaughn on the mound in the final game:
“I’ve only got one thing to say to you Vauhgn. Strike this [guy] out!”
Trying to stretch the word “guy” over 4-syllables is fantastic.
Truth, who wants to sign him for 10 years? I’d bet he’ll perform up too the amount he’ll get compared to others.
January 5th, 20121:58 pm
Ward, yeah I had to do it for the first time about 4 years ago with my German Shepard. It’s not an easy thing to do, but doing the right thing rarely is.
January 5th, 20122:04 pm
Yeah, and agree. Read some post on “Pulp Fiction.” Favorite part is when the girl took too much dope, and almost died, and they were all freaking out.Eric Stoltz was real funny in that role.It was funny when they finally suck the needle in.
January 5th, 20122:06 pm
I like your ideas and I think you need to give Wren a call to put them in motion asap. I really see a fit for both teams…Jackson in ATL and the Tigers for Prado. Stop messing around with Jones and Baltimore and go for Jackson with better D and younger.
The name is just a combo of my fav baseball and football teams. So do you have any ideas for who the Braves should go after for the OF?
January 5th, 20122:07 pm
this ain’t your daddy’s Miguel Tejada
DOB – agreed on Pulp Fiction. I remember when I first saw that movie, it was the night before I drove out to college, blew me away. Still good movie despite the numerous other movies that came after trying to imitate it.
It’s weird, but I will sit and watch a movie on TV, even with commercials, despite having it on DVD, but its not like I will put the DVD in and watch it.
January 5th, 20122:09 pm
BravePack, thanks for the vote of confidence. I just really want this team to not only look short term but long term as well.
January 5th, 20122:11 pm
Puma, I do the same thing.. it always irritates the wife. She always comes in and says, “We’ve got that on DVD. why in the world are you watching it on tv?”. So don’t think your alone there.
January 5th, 20122:13 pm
The videos are a product of his agents not the player. He is a kid and the machine of agents as we know loves to dress up their product.
Kawa was great 10 years after we got him. Yunel had a rep that preceded him.
I still submit that “Major League” has the funniest TV edit ever, when Dorn is talking to Vaughn on the mound in the final game
That edit always sticks in my mind. Always drop that on my brother when we watch a ball game together.
But I think just about any TV airing of a Samuel Jackson film is going to be loaded with hilarious edits. Snakes on a Plane…. didn’t care much for that movie until it aired on FX with all the edits. I was dying laughing. “….monkey fighting snakes on this Monday to Friday plane…”
10 years before lol….
January 5th, 20122:14 pm
BravePack, not much now. I wouldn’t mind a package of prospects. But the major league options seem to have dissipated into nothing.
January 5th, 20122:16 pm
Well, I just got a job. Start tomorrow. Gotta take a 1.50 pay cut from where I was before, but guess its better than no job.
January 5th, 20122:17 pm
Trade talk with Seth Smith has cooled down, but if Rockis sign Cody Ross, then they will trade Seth Smith. Latest news to the rumors.
January 5th, 20122:18 pm
My question is? Do we want this to happen.?
January 5th, 20122:20 pm
Ward, no we don’t. We want to trade with the Tigers to get Jackson and Castellanos.
He’s just awful. But once and a while, I just have to check his twitter feed and see what’s the next ridiculous thing written by him.
Tejada-would be a good vetran back up SS.Wouldn’t be a bad idea for the Braves to sign him. Always liked the way he plays.
January 5th, 20122:21 pm
It will be interesting to wait, and watch this spectalce.
January 5th, 20122:22 pm

AJC’s O’Brien hits on reason talks cooled w Braves and Smith. Braves need protection at 3b for chipper before moving Prado

I vowed not to mess with such a “bad azz womanizer hunk of a man,” but since flange, raleigh, and DAP bought into your nonsense, I’ll try.
Sir (since you seem to take exception to ‘dude’), your 9:21 was a nice comeback. Mocking, funny, concise. Even your 9:53, at least with the sugar stuff. But, we both know what you meant by ‘POS.’ Anybody reading the string of posts would see that. Positive and pudding, huh? Right…
Perhaps you should leave vocabulary from “the Black community” to Tomahawkin; it seems he has a better grasp on it than you do. I didn’t think such a person existed.
Yes, Tomahawkin, that was an “unwarranted, out-of-nowhere cheap-shot.” Again.
January 5th, 20122:25 pm
Oh my, I’ve come here to the news of the Braves’ possible interest in Miguel Tejada? Could we please revive the Seth Smith/Adam Jones rumors?
Efrim-Smart move keeping Prado.
Gary O – I’d put it around 64…what’s the over/under for how many plays the left side of that infield “takes off” this year.
January 5th, 20122:29 pm
Efrim, Shanks told the truth whether we like it or not.
January 5th, 20122:30 pm
Efrim he banned you from his site repeatedly because you are a jerk and funny how you still are following him on twitter? Just can’t let loose of him can you? You are being spitefull. Scorned by Bill. Lol
DOB-Could the Braves ever be interested in Ryan Ludwick?
January 5th, 20122:32 pm
I read that piece by Shanks this morning and agreed with it, too. In fact, it ticked me off so bad, that I wrote an email to Liberty Media to vent my frustrations, for whatever good that did.
January 5th, 20122:33 pm
Bas since you are being a d!ck about it you are now officially a P-O-S
January 5th, 20122:35 pm
Parent Over the Shoulder?
January 5th, 20122:36 pm
What if J.J. wins 20 games, and the players we get don’t work out? I believe J.J. could be the ace on the staff. Just sign some player that will get you by. There’s a good Free Agent Market out there still.
January 5th, 20122:38 pm
Our payroll is exactly in line with our attendance. When we spent more, attendance was on a downward trend for years. You folks are asking someone to be willing to lose money. It’s one thing to ask, but then to be all indignant when they don’t? There ain’t many Mark Cuban’s in the world. Most willing to lose money also want to help run the show. Look around; it doesn’t work.
Thanks, PD. Glad we’re clear.
January 5th, 20122:39 pm
Does POS mean = Positively Outstandingly Smart?
January 5th, 20122:40 pm
While I don’t agree with you (and I know this’ll read bad ’cause of our history), I genuinely think you folks that are so concerned should all forward such emails. Perhaps some version of yours that the masses here could tweak and send along. If Liberty Media got enough of ‘em, maybe they’d get rid of the headache. Surely, two is better than one, right?
January 5th, 20122:41 pm
Cuban, would be O.K. with me,but Owners can be more self centered. Look at Jones, and Dallas.
January 5th, 20122:42 pm
Efrim he banned you from his site repeatedly because you are a jerk and funny how you still are following him on twitter?
Never been to his site, other than today to read an article. Never been banned from it, because I don’t really visit it.
Shanks told the truth whether we like it or not.
I disagree. I am perfectly fine with where our major league payroll is at this moment. I’d like more spending on the draft and in international players, however that’s changed now with the rules. It could be a lot worse than Liberty Media. A lot worse.
January 5th, 20122:46 pm
I hope Prince goes to the Nats.
Folks, a more passionate owner could make things worse, do you not see what occurs in Baltimore and what occurred in Houston? Chicago, with Reinsdorf? Shanks clearly does not see this, or understand what those passionate owners have done to their franchises. The White Sox system sucks every single year, because Jerry Reinsdorf does not believe in prospects or paying minor leaguers bonuses, at all.
January 5th, 20122:47 pm
“Never been to his site, other than today to read an article. Never been banned from it, because I don’t really visit it.” – Efrim
Dammit. I was hoping there was a whole story behind this. Could’ve kept me entertained all afternoon. .. Mike, are there two Efrim-named Braves fanatics? How’d that dude feel about the scouting system’s new direction? Penguins fan? DH?
January 5th, 20122:48 pm
I used to write for an old website called Bravesbeat.com, and I remember the guy who ran the site (I think his name was Merv) complaining all the time about Shanks and his pay-to-read sites. I’m not a big fan of his stuff either. Mostly because there’s not much of interest that you don’t have to pay for.
I would like Prince to go to Japan……
January 5th, 20122:49 pm
WARNING – THIS IS NOT KNOCKING THE JOB FRANK WREN HAS DONE – I’m sorry, but it was Frank Wren’s decision to not have financial flexibility this winter. He made trades for Dan Uggla and Michael Bourn, gave Chipper an extension, signed Derek Lowe to a four year, 60 million dollar deal. That’s why we don’t have financial flexibility right now. Payroll has hovered around the low 90’s for quite some time. Wren is aware of this. We have payroll flexibility next year.
January 5th, 20122:50 pm
if I were Wren I would just stop talking to Colorado right now. They are not evidently going to budge on their OF prospect or pitching prospect to go with Smith, and Smith just really is not a big enough upgrade to make the trade anyway. I would focus on KC and Detroit to see if something can get done. If not, I do not make the trade at this time but still sign Cody Ross and Wilson Betemit
Mike, are there two Efrim-named Braves fanatics? How’d that dude feel about the scouting system’s new direction? Penguins fan? DH?
January 5th, 20122:51 pm
Prince in Japan? I guess Tom Waits wouldn’t be the only one big there.
DOB, saw it was coming on (Pulp Fiction) and forced myself to go to bed. Knew I would be up till the very end. Agreed, never get tired of it.
January 5th, 20122:52 pm
The problem is everyone was spoiled with Turner. He’s not your typical owner. Most owners see owning a team as only a financial vessel. The few that are fanatics tend to meddle more than they should. From what I’ve always read, it sounds like Ted was a perfect blend, a huge fan that visibly supported the team while letting the baseball people he hired handle the business of baseball.
“I am perfectly fine with where our major league payroll”
Seriously. Look around the league. Would I like more? Sure. I’d like five million dollars, Charlize Theron, and some sort of combination mind control/anti-aging/mute switch that works on Charlize Theron. Don’t mean it’s reality.
Wren, should just sign some Free Agents. There are some solid ones out there.Wait until All Star Break, and then make a trade.
this is more for discussion purposes as I am curious to what the regulars think…….The Angels have said they are not signing Madson though they still need a closer What from the Angels would be a reasonable ransom from the Angels for Johnny venters and would you do the trade if you are Frank Wren?
Bourjos, Aybar, and a prospect for Venters and Pastornicky?
A trade of Venters anywhere would be a bold move but could let the Braves address SS short term, LF short term, and CF long term
January 5th, 20122:53 pm
January 5th, 20122:54 pm
Why the rush? If there is no hurry……..
January 5th, 20122:55 pm
BAS, No problem with you disagreeing. I went to their site and filled in a form for the email, so I can’t post it here verbatim.
Some of the points I made were:
-My disappointment with the lack of player transactions this off-season in light of the collapse and the marked improvements by teams within out division.
- The news that Pastornicky would be the starting SS after Wren publicly stated he wasn’t ready in early November.
-The reported shopping of two very good players who aren’t currently at their peak value for inferior ones with smaller salaries.
-I chided them for not providing a bit more financial support to the team when they make billions in profits and asked them to please sell the team to someone who cares about it because the fans deserve that.
If anyone else would like to vent, here is the site where I contacted them. I agree with BAS, the more, the merrier.
January 5th, 20122:56 pm
All,I’ll talk later tonight after work. It’s been cool, and enjoy your post, and ideas. Peace My Friends…….
Sure. I’d like five million dollars, Charlize Theron, and some sort of combination mind control/anti-aging/mute switch that works on Charlize Theron
Jessica to be more consistent in picking up her friggin phone, more prospects with upside, Crosby to not have anymore headaches, a Time machine to get back right before Alex Smith went #1 instead of Aaron Rodgers. I’d like a lot of things.
January 5th, 20122:59 pm
Brava, I will agree that this offseason has been frustrating, especially coming off of our collapse. Any slow offseason will make you heated, unless your team just won a World Series. Just gotta remember that it’s a talented roster in the weaker league. We’ll be fine.
January 5th, 20123:00 pm
The Angels have said they are not signing Madson though they still need a closer What from the Angels would be a reasonable ransom from the Angels for Johnny venters and would you do the trade if you are Frank Wren?
How about signing Madson to a one year deal so he could stick it to the Phillies this season?
……..and the Braves would have the best bullpen of all time!!!! (not happening, I know)
January 5th, 20123:01 pm
Efrim is just a Wren hater.
January 5th, 20123:04 pm
You have a faceless owner with not a heartbeat behind Liberty, I am against ANY corporation owning a franchise. I understand the payroll is equitable, I just want to see Real people behind the teams. Flaws or no flaws. Corporations are taking over the world, do they have to take over the games we love?
Efrim, it is frustrating because, with the inaction, we are losing ground within a division where the best we could hope for the past few years was second place. Sorry if I’m not comforted by the assurances of the same folks who said there was no way the Braves would blow their huge WC lead in September.
January 5th, 20123:06 pm
Efrim there are some good sites out there and some really bad ones. The Internet has evolved to give us fans a voice to exchange baseball info. I remember when I played baseball before the Internet even we had to wait until Athlons, Mazeroskis, The Sporting News to name few came out every February at the bookstores to get our baseball fix, yes players kept up back then too.
January 5th, 20123:14 pm
I hope a trade or free agent signing occurs soon as well, however I’m not upset that Liberty Media owns this team and they aren’t the reason for the lack of activity this winter.
January 5th, 20123:19 pm
I wholeheartedly agree, brother. What I’d really like is some sort of Packers-model, where the fans own all or part of the team. It’s a shame we can’t figure a way in (they’d never willingly let us), ’cause with the money fans spend… But, as you said, anything but a corporation.
Tomahawkin (The Godfather)
January 5th, 20123:23 pm
A Slow offseason means that Frank Wren will be Active During S. Training or right at the Trade Deadline, Bank On It!
Once we get a season ending injury to a position player or an opposing teams starter gets injured, then Wren’s phone will be off the hook…figuratively…
What’s wrong with corporations? Companies like Exxon, Coca-Cola, Miscrosoft, Apple, WalMart each employ tens of thousands of workers who receive a regular paycheck, free (or mostly free) health insurance, and a 401k retirement plan with a company match.
January 5th, 20123:24 pm
Not to mentionif the Falcons make it to the Bowl then the Epic Choke! can be a little easier to swallow…but I think the Falcons are 1 and done…
January 5th, 20123:25 pm
Wish I had a dollar for every time Tomahawkin said “Bank On It!”
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
