I do think there is more to the Braves farm than the five prospects Newman mentioned(Gilmartin, Simmons, Bethancourt, Salcedo, C. Perez). Zeke Spruill, Brandon Drury were named in BA’s Top 10 prospects. Nick Ahmed and J.R. Graham could be solid major leaguers from the 2011 draft. And they have a lot of relief pitchers. All that said, he’s pretty much right based on what’s in the system currently.

Let’s just hope 2012 is the best draft we’ve had since 2007…..

Murph – The market isn’t exactly overflowing and those who have made deals got way more than the Braves have available to pay.

If what they are looking for is a Veteran ss with lots of MLB experience (and an All Star just a couple seasons back) and cheap as a backup for when/if Pastornicky needs it, then Tejada makes plenty of sense.

If he’s in shape and motivated, he could be a good pick up.

Tejada’s last two seasons have been really bad: .259/.298/.362, 83 OPS+ in over 1,000 plate appearances. He played 44 games at 3rd, 42 games at SS, and 4 games at 2B in 2011 for the Giants.

I like the Tejada idea if he comes cheap.

He’s no worse than any name that’s been bandied about.

He’s apparently getting into top shape right now. (and despite the steroids from years past, it takes a ton of working out to make those steroids worthwhile so we know the guy will put in the hard work)

Have you seen how the guy really enjoys playing baseball? He’s fun to watch and easy to root for, in my opinion. Probably be a great addition in the clubhouse.

I know three-way trades almost never work, but try this one on for size.

ROCKIES get Martin Prado
YANKEES get Seth Smith + Rockies prospect + Braves prospect(s)
BRAVES get Nick Swisher

This deal works for all three clubs. The Rockies get the second baseman they covet, while only giving up Seth Smith, who is expendable, and a prospect.

The Yankees are obsessed with not going over the luxury tax limit. They also want to get younger and more athletic. This move would give them the payroll flexibility to go after Yoennis Cespedes. If Cespedes isn’t MLB ready right away, they could do a lot worse than a right field platoon of Seth Smith (.830 OPS, mostly against RHP) and Andruw Jones (.851 OPS, mostly against LHP). And if Cespedes is ready, Smith would be a very competent and not terribly expensive DH/pinch hitter or trade bait.

The Braves get Nick Swisher, one of the very few players I would trade Prado to acquire. He is a professional hitter who gets on base and drives in runs. It would be nice if a condition of the trade would be a negotiating window to try to extend Swisher beyond next season. And Swisher does have a limited no-trade clause. Given that the Braves only control Prado for one additional year (through the 2013 season), I might do this trade even without the extension and take my chances on resigning Swisher in free agency (in 2013 when the Braves should have additional funds available).

If the Yankees have any interest in JJ, which they should in spite of Cashman’s comments to the contrary, this deal could be expanded. (And it would help pay for Swisher.)

but your the prospect guy, so tell me…is this really a bad thing or is that alot of young talent in the minors?

They have graduated a lot of guys, especially after this year when Teheran, Vizcaino, Delgado and Pastornicky are no longer eligible as prospects. My biggest concern is that they have very little in the lower levels. Nice depth in Double-A and Triple-A. But you’d like to see them have a few more prospects with some upside in Danville and Rome, and they do not have this, which will cause them to have their weakest farm system in a decade. It’s possible that they kill it in the 2012 draft and go for upside to fill the rookie leagues with, as they have plenty of high floor players at the mid-levels. That’s what I’d like to see after two straight drafts focusing on signable, high floor depth.

Anyway, to answer your question, the Braves have one of the most talented group of players 25 years old and younger in the majors, which is great. However, every team is allowed to draft players every single June, and there is really no reason as to why any system should be completely empty or as shallow as the Brave system potentially could be. Shame on farm directors if this happens, regardless of the position you are selecting in.

PD

If the Braves FO signs Tejada to a minor league deal with an invite to ST as a NRI and he battles and wins a job good for everyone. If another player wins that job good for them. There is only one way to find out who is right for the job, it is called “competition for the position”. If Tejada isn’t cut out to make the grade he washes out and is released. How is that a bad thing? That means a better man won and will represent the team at that position.

How about the Braves trade Prado and JJ for prospects to dump salary and make a run at Yoennis. If 2013 is going to be their year (freed up salary money and maturation of players will put this team in a good position) then get Yoennis now, put a platoon in LF (if needed) and just view 2012 as a mulligan year.

Wren will have 30-40mm to spend next season depending on Chipper and an OF of Yoennis, new CF and hopefully a repaired Heyward would finally put some real swat in the OF.

Fredi is Cuban and perhaps that would be a draw for Yoennis.

A messy idea I know b/c the platoon in LF could be as horrible as Diaz/Constanza with Hicks backing up Chipper but we have seen similar Braves teams in recent past.

Yoennis suitors are laying low and the 50mm deal he was expected to garner is now drifting back to 34-40 over 4-5yrs.

The guy is looks like Bo Jackson and hits a ton. Has the potential to be a 5 tool guy. The Braves won’t get that type of developed ML player under Liberty. They won’t get Hamilton, guys like Kemp etc so take a bit of a risk on Yoennis. It won’t be like pissing away 15mm a year on Lowe.

Would Tejada back up Chipper? Because having a 40 year old Chipper Jones at 3rd and 38 year old Miguel Tejada at SS scares the hell out of me.

Yes, but from the Braves standpoint, it’s not as frightening and therefore more appealing than having Omar V. back up 3rd and short.

Tejada’s last two seasons have been really bad: .259/.298/.362, 83 OPS+ in over 1,000 plate appearances.

The last two seasons: .246/.282/.411/.693/87 over 1,000 PA for Gonzo and he was our starter. If Tejada is a backup, that’s not too bad. Shouldn’t cost much either. And he kind of fits with the description of the need…

With both Cespedes and Jackson on the roster, we could run an extra right handed hitter out there against Lefties. Possibly having an entire outfield of right handers if Diaz was in LF, Jackson in CF and Cespedes in RF. Our bench could be awefully deep.

Nothing would wook for me in a deal where we would lose MARTIN. I think he will come back with a very good year, would hate to see him playing against us.

VaBravesFan; Keith Law is constantly wrong on minor league players.
I can’t wait to see how brillant people think he is after a few seasons working in his new job with the Houston Astros evaluating talent for them.
Funny, the Blue Jays fired him and their minor league system became one of the better ones since his departure!
Terdoslavich can swing the bat, but the question is can he find a position to play?

George, if he went to the Tigers he won’t necessarily be playing against us. But if those scenarios could play out the Braves would be the team to beat next season.

Actually Keith Law is one of the better prospect gurus. While he may come off as a dick, he’s just telling you his true opinion of the player regardless if its your favorite prospect or not. He doesnt sugar coat anything to give a fan more optimism about a guy. Plus he is right most of the time.
