Hey Larry, have the Cards improved themselves? The Marlins by the way finished more than just a little bit behind the Braves. And they have holes in their pitching staff. Busch, Rays have a stock full of prospects. One of the reasons and the main reason they are probably not going to re-sign Upton next yr is because he has had some problems in the clubhouse and more importantly his numbers are not all that great. He has yet to live up to his potential. And they only need a few minor tweaks. Yes their payroll cannot compete with the redsox or the yanks.
Seattle, here are Upton’s numbers the last 3 yrs 09-11 avg 241 237 243 obp313, 322, 331 ops 686,745, 759.. plus he is going to hit the FA market soon. Those numbers for the cost, no thanks.
why do u want to trade your best pitcher for because jj was the braves best pitcher last few years. just a knee problem a the end of the years. so why trade him?
gogo,, personally I would like to see the Braves keep him. But Braves need to find a solid LF. I thought and I bet most of us were under the impression that finding a solid LF’er is easy. In fact one of the easiest positions to find a solid player. I looked at those that play LF and their stats. There are only a small handful and most of those are practically untouchable.

Nope, i think i didn’t. So stop being a stupid idiot putting words in my mouth (or words in my keyboard, whatever). I just implied that every team in the division is improving except the Braves.
JC, I never said YOU said anything about the braves not trading etc. You are the one that said they will finish 4th etc. If you want to resort to name calling go right ahead. MY point is for those that are spouting out doom and gloom and those that have all of the answers, there is no reason to watch or blog because you have all of the answers. And all i was saying that the braves are still in better shape than the Marlins and the Nats. The Mets are a non factor. There are a lot of teams that have not improved themselves yet.
so what are the chances to get better is u don’t want spend money. last season the problem was the run support. if they will score more run braves had a chance to win the division. and they will have a great chance to go to the world series because the staring pitching was great it was better than St Luis.

For those who would like to see Seth Smith in a Brave Uniform…..WHY????? He hit ,284 in Denver, and only hit 13 hrs. If he can’t hit more than 13 hrs in Denver his chances of hitting more than 5 in Atlanta aren’t very good.
I guess open as is. Run Diaz and Prado out there. Ugh. Hope Heyward gets it right. Hope Uggla hits a steady .265 all year. Hope Chipper looks as good all year and over 120 games as he did at the start of last year. He came out of the gate hitting it pretty hard. Hope Pastornicky can field and hit at the MLB level. Hope Bourn, Freeman and McCann can do it all.
This is REALLY sad… not only are the Braves sitting on their hands and not making moves, but the only rumors about a potential trade are for players like Seth Smith.
After last season’s monumental collapse, the Atlanta fans NEED to see a change… if Wren does nothing, it should come as no surprise that there are less fans in the seats in 2012
I have a question, why does it seem this winter has been slow in general. Not just the Braves–non existent, but there are a lot of teams out there that need a closer like Boston, Angels, O’s etc. There are guys like Madson sitting out there and others that seem to be on the trading block. There are many that need SP but very little movement on Oswalt and others. Oswalt is claiming he only wants a 1 yr deal to prove that he is healthy. Overall, especially on the trade side, it has been slow. Just wondering why?
bmahlon, you are right that probably has a lot to do with it along with a position of strength. The Braves have the luxury of having a quite a few guys that are ready to take JJ’s spot. Its always nice to make a move from a position of strength. It just seems to be a slow winter for braves, yanks, redsox, cubs, ray’s, and many more.
Its not that the Braves do not have the money to spend, its just that one of the richest corporations in the world who owns the Braves WILL NOT for whatever reason spend the money.
I am sure that Frank would have pursued guys like Cuddyer or Beltran (which is not a bad gamble for 2 yrs) had LM allowed him to do so.
Once and for all, the problem is not Mr. Wren, it really is not Fredi (though the collapse puts him on the warm seat this yr), its not Chipper and its not Mc Guirk.
It is our corporate shirts who do not give a rats taill about you and the quality of entertinment product you get watching an ATL Braves game.
Boycotting does no good so as a MLB fan, have to just accept that ownership is not going to do what it takes to win. The only way we win is if we overachieve and get on a luck roll.
Championships are not win in ATL GA., plain and simple. That goes for the Falcons, Dawgs, Hawks, TEch, etc. It cannot be done here.
Cheap ownership like the Braves have don’t deserve a team. You can’t operate on a shoestring budget and compete with free-spending teams. The luck has run out. The Braves are officialy not better than the Phillies or Marlins now.
The Braves ownership are billionaires that make the Braves operate on a limited budget. It’s like the owner of a McDonald’s (burger) franchise making their son eat off $2 per day… Sell the damn team.
Read where the Braves are suing Disney over Trademark concerns over new movie titled “Brave.” Maybe Liberty Media can swing a settlement for $20M or so for payroll use…
Don’t understand why trading Prado is even being considered. Before last leason, he was probably the best all round player the Braves had. Good BA, good OBA, great clutch hitter. Odds are he will have a far better year next season than any of the trade options being talked about.
Don’t understand why trading Prado is even being considered. Before last leason, he was probably the best all round player the Braves had. Good BA, good OBA, great clutch hitter. Odds are he will have a far better year next season than any of the trade options being talked about.
Trading Prado and JJ is considered in part because you have to give something to get something and they are guys that other teams would want.
Why would anyone want Denard Span who has not been that good since 2009 and Tysoushi Nyshikoia just stinks. That is a worse return than names like Lorenzo Cain, Seth Smith and other names talked about.
Seth Smith is 29 years old, and could have a break out year as a solid everyday player, but at this point I wouldn’t trade him for Martin Prado. Smith has shown a knack for coming up with clutch hits to win games, and he’s got some power. But he’s an average fielder and hasn’t shown an ability to hit lefties or to be an every day player. Here’s the key stat: Over the last 3 years (1200 AB) his OPS vs lefties is about .600 and his OPS against righties is almost .900. He’s a great candidate to platoon but does not fit what the Braves need at all. Keep Martin, who is also very clutch and fits what the Braves need at multiple positions.
Keep Prado! The Braves should be looking to trade from the position they have some depth (starting pitching).
I think Wren is brilliant to wait out the market, because as the free agent starters continue to be signed, his leverage in trade talks will increase. He still needs to make the right deal, of course.
If the Braves are going to offer one of their good starting pitchers to the Rockies, the asking price should be somebody like Dexter Fowler, who hits lefties and righties. Dex is the same age as Charlie Blackmon, and has had a lot more success at the major league level.
Adding another left handed batter is not the answer!
If you’re offering a proven starter, demand equal value in return (not a platoon player).
Wait for the right deal. Time = leverage.
Kind of a catch 22 with Chipper. We need to have him to have a good year to succeed, but if he has a good year, he may want to stick around for a couple of more years and tie our hands financially.
Every year that Chipper Jones is on the roster, is another year his replacement is behind. Get Jones to retire, hire him as hitting coach and get someone who will be able to play more than 50 games a year. Isn’t that one of the reasons people got on Bobby Cox? Too loyal to his players?
Chipper needs to retire. We are grateful for the glory years but hangin on to play 75 games and hamstringing (pun intended) the team from having a 162 game 3rd baseman is selfish.
JS to FW: What have you done to improve the team? Remember I wrote that letter to the fans.
FW to JS: Well, I fired the hitting coach.
JS to FW: That won’t help because too many of our hitters stink so bad that no hitting coach can fix them.
FW to JS: Oh, I didn’t know that Uncle John. Can I go to the bathroom now?
JS: Geezzz
Well one person above thinks Chipper only plays 50 games per year, while another thinks he plays 75. Gee, wonder which one is correct?
But, hey, don’t let the facts get in the way of a perfectly unfunny rant! Yes, I realize that Chipper isn’t getting any younger and he won’t be playing 150 games next year. But you might want to look up and find out how many third basemen played in more games than him. Or how many Braves. The answer might surprise you. But I doubt you really want to know–that might spoil your pity party.

The Braves want a power hitting LF and a back up for Pastornicky okay I get that what the Braves need. Okay why not sign Gomes to a minor league deal and sign and I know this won’t be very liked and sign Tejeda and use him as a infield role like 3rd SS and 1st.
Come on, wjones !! Chipper is so slow running the bases, you can time him with a sundial. Yes, hero worship is great, but every great player must realize that he is not helping the team anymore. How many games was Chipper out last year during those horrible losing streaks? A lot more than he played, that’s for sure. Bring up the next stud from Gwinnett and move on.
Don’t count the Braves out on the Adam Jones deal just yet. He is the power bat we need, he can play anywhere in the outfield, and with their dearth of pitching I bet the Orioles would take Jurrgens and Delgado. I would like to keep Prado for 2013 when Chipper is gone. Of course, if we have to send him to Baltimore, we would need to resort to a journeyman backup for Chipper until 2013 when the Braves will have his money available to land a quality replacement. Of course, there is another option. Wait for Chipper to retire, replace him next winter, and make a run in 2013. None of us want to wait, but it is an option.
Looks like no sign of the Braves is still going on. They have done jack crap since that Sept epic collapse. I love the team, but I am not wasting a single dime on this team this year. My direct tv bill will go down significantly this year due to not ordering the mlb extra innings package. I am not going to a game this year in Milwaukee either.
To make a long story short, until they prove that they want to contend, I am not showing any kind of support for them. If Wren and company want to stand pat, then I hope after the miserable season they will have in 2012, that they all get fired. I am tired of spending my hear earned money and supporting a team that just doesn’t get it.
I will count the Braves out on Adam Jones. He is the type of player that the Braves could use and makes sense so that is why I am counting them out on getting him because we all know that the words “Braves” and “Common Sense” don’t ever pop up in the same sentence.
why u want to trade Seth Smith for Martin Prado when Prado is a better player that will make Colorado a winner in that trade. in the last 3 season Prado i AVG is 307 13+ HR and 58+ RBI THAT PRADO
AND SETH SMITH AVG 270 13+ HR 50+RBI AND ONLY PLAY THE OUTFIELD SO i see prado
a better player.
You think we let are shortstop go help brewers repeat in there divison we let Marlins get top notch players n a better manager which and new ball park will sold out for awhile Marlins will draw 3 million fans this season as change name to Miami which is better Tampa will remain in american league till they move to Montreal in 2014 ….Phillies same we stink why Braves an Wren no go after Prince fielder we need Pop not splat in line-up and if freddi Gonz starts season bad Frank Wren Job on line…as is freddi also u blew playoffs and all Wren n freddi did was tip there hats!Look for upset as Miami under new manager wins East Phillies 2nd nats 3rd That team that plays at ted and Mets in 2012!
Go, AGon did not do a very good job hitting. It will not be very difficult to get the young kid to perform equally with a bigger upside at a much cheaper price. IF Pastor gives us the same numbers or slightly above at several million less then it is a good thing. Why would the Braves go after Fielder? That would not be spending money wisely when Freddie is sitting there. And finally the Marlins still have not made enough moves to make up for the large deficit. My guess they will start off hot but only slide down as the summer hits. They do not have any depth to overcome any injuries.
with Bourn leaving via free agency after 2012, and Prado imploding in LF and Heyward not rebounding, the Braves will be looking for an entire new outfield this time next year.
How come Beaves organization can’t produce any speedy outfielders who can hit for average & power? (please don’t cite Francouer & Heyward)
Well, as I read the postings, I didn’t keep an exact count of folks opinions–but clearly the majority have grave concerns about our ability to compete next year and the main concern is the offense. I am with the majority. In fact, I have the exact same concerns now about the offense as I did this time last year. Unless Braves management/ownership gets us a big stick, once again we will struggle to score and waste more good pitching.
How bout the Braves do 4 things to make this team better. 1 is sign Coco Crisp to L.F and sign him to a 3 year 12mil contract if its affordable. 2 sign a third catcher so Ross and McCann can have a cple of days off like in Aug/Sept someone like Kendall, J.R. Towles, Posada or Varitek. 3 Now I know this wont be a popular signing but what bout signing Miguel Tejada to be the back up SS/3rd for Chipper and Pastornicky and also use as a RH bat off the bench.
They want you to believe that all that money they saved went to other players for bonus, raises, and arb’s. Which is true. But they made a whole lot more money that they want to keep and not spend. Where not suppossed to know about that money though. Keep it on the DL
As long as fans attend games @ Turner Field to watch mediocre to occasionally competive baseball, Liberty Media will continue to turn a modest profit and do nothing to upgrade the product. Why should they?
Bringing on board local or regional heroes like McCann, Francouer, & Heyward, among others, is a sure-fire way to stimulate local interest in the team; and winning is secondary.
However, before blaming Liberty Media for payroll restraints, bear in mind recent World Series teams like the Rangers, Giants, Rays, Marlins, Rockies & Cardinals all reached the big dance with payrolls comparable or smaller than what Frank Wren has had to work with.
$30 million alone was paid to Lowe, Kawakami & McLouth last season; or about 1/3 of the entire payroll. Not exactly bang for the buck. Is Dan Uggla really worth $14 million a season for a .232 batting average and the occasional solo HR ? Is that Liberty Media’s fauilt?
This time next year, when Michael Bourn has left via free agency and the outfield is patrolled by rejects off other teams, there will be a lot of anger in Braves Country.
One thing is a given as for as the Braves getting any help for next year. His name will have to be hispanic sounding or hank will have to ok the deal. After all he brought us heyshood. The greatest thing since baseball was invented. What a joke.
Signing Coco Crisp would not help unless you think average players is the way to a championship. Lets do like Charlie Manuel did when they signed Hunter Pence it was sign a impact player or do not sign anyone.
The Braves ownership will not spend the $$$$$ to sign an impact guy.
They will not even sign a Cuddyer or Willingham, what makes anyone think they will go for a Hunter Pence or a Carlos Beltran (went to STL) type for a couple yrs.
And if fans think of completely staying away from the games, it exacerbates the problem. Hey, we lost the Thrashers because people completely turned their backs on a poor product. That product is looking okay in Winnipeg right now. A little patience and we might could have kept them though ownership there did not help.
As a fan you are stuck between a rock and hard place.
Coco Crisp does not do a heck of a lot for me, especially if you have to give him $5 mil or so.

Hungry United States of America the 13th Empire of Solomon newly born in 1612. For long time brothers you have been deceived by Priory of Sion, about the decendant of Lord Solomon, Merovingian Family.
Originally the decendant of Lord Apollon was Ise Family Japan, Yoon Family Korea. Yamato Tribe assisted the family. But in 1856 Babylon Empire inventd Neutron, and soon by alienation between north & south america, Freemason lost crown and started to protect not Ise Family but Merovingian.
Merovingian was the king of Israel not Yamato, by the tactics of Babylon, Babylon’s friend Israel took the act of Yamato & Ise & Solomon.
So now USA think Solomon’s decendant is Merovingian, their tribe is Israel, their christ is Jesus not solomon. After all, whole Israel Tribe & Merovingian’s subordinate Freemason may think the fake solomon, the dark lord’s family is real & seven fraud are seven angels.
But now Yamato Tribe lost crown to fake Ise family emperor, Beast’s subordinate. And no hope is on earth because earth lost crown. That’s your fault. Not heaven’s.
Returned Solomon’s people, from sincere heart, Heliocenter can promise the salvation under the last judgment.
After being implanted in 2003 september until now, nobody did exist on earth who could fight with babylon just like me. With sackcloth I prophecied 1,215days around until now. No more safe internet server I can withstand exist except for Yahoo Japan & Naver Korea. Yahoo Korea blocked.
Time is near. Stupid nation of the coward. Without living crown, people must extinct, this is the law of nature. Natural selection, weak people without living crown always can be changed into devil tribe.
Don’t think Lord Solomon didn’t salvate you, think natural selection disposed you. Lord Solomon didn’t receive any salvation request from you.
In past B.C 3700 around Lord Solomon gave Gold about 10,800 Ton toward 12 empire just before he went back to heliocenter, do you remember? freemason? forgot? ^*^ at near future Solomon will confiscate the gold.
People who salvated will meet with me and would know who I am. Children? don’t worry about them. Theseday? I disposed Clone Army of Babylon Empire nearly. You know well I think? look at Kim Jung-Il. ^*^
Coco Crisp hit 264 last year with 8 home runs and 54 RBIs, I thought the Braves wanted a power hitting left fielder and by the way with all his power his lifetime batting average is 275.
We’d be a lot better off with Prado playing left field and can Coco fill in at third for Chipper.
Is it against ajc rules to comment on side blogs? — Finkerstein
Of course it’s not “against AJC rules.” We like people to comment on all the blogs. People just tend to gravitate back to the main blog after commenting on one of the other blogs, such as this one. The main blog is quite easy to identify — go to the AJC’s Braves page, and the “main blog” is the one beneath my picture (or Carroll’s picture, on days she’s covering as the main beat writer).

My direct tv bill will go down significantly this year due to not ordering the mlb extra innings package. I am not going to a game this year in Milwaukee either.
To make a long story short, until they prove that they want to contend, I am not showing any kind of support for them.

Not only is he old (37) and oft-injured (played 90 games in 2011), but he hit a whopping .239 with 4 homers last season.

Of course it’s not “against AJC rules.” We like people to comment on all the blogs. People just tend to gravitate back to the main blog after commenting on one of the other blogs, such as this one.
