I won’t say why bother when you write a new blog, DOB. I appreciate any news concerning the Braves. At this point, you may have to do like some on the ole blog and make some stuff up! The Braves have left the building.

I just think adding a better 4th OF or back up 3rd baseman would have been my #1 need this off season. With a limited budget and unwillingness to trade prospects this is the best route to improve the roster. With Chipper when you factor in days off and a great chance of him being injured you have to count on Prado playing around 30 to 50 games at 3B. I just think using Diaz/Constanza that much is a negative..

The thought doesn’t thrill me, either. But, assuming health and normal production from 1-6, the team should have enough offensive depth to withstand the absence of one player. That’s assuming that Fredo will put his “regular” guys out there with some regularity, LOL. Last year, he had a tendency to rotate his days off so much, that he never had his best 8 out there.

Lets say WSH does sign Fielder. There’s no way anybody can tell me there’s not at least an ounce of worry and maybe even a tad of frustration on even the biggest “homer”, supportive fans. They know who I’m talking about here.
I’m supportive and even a homer to a point, but damn, Braves should be a little worried at this point,IMO. These are teams you face the most. They can have a lot of say in your success throughout the season and if you get a playoff spot. I don’t completely buy the “we love our team and aren’t worried about what those other guys are doing”. BS! Yes you are.

I would be very concerned. We already have a hard time beating them….They sign Fielder and put him in that lineup it makes everyone better. Then after this season they’ll be spending on a CFer, and most likely Bryce Harper will be ready who is comparable to our Heyward. Chance to be a monster team going forward.
Now if we can sustain our great starting pitching and bullpen production with a much improved offense I think were the best overall team in the division this year. But I dont like that were hoping everything falls our way with out adding any depth.

the Marlins need to move Coughlin back to 2B. That will be his position long term. Moving him around in the OF completely screwed up his hitting as well as his mind. Marlins could easily be strong in the field though they have work to do with their pitching.
1B – Logan MOrrison
2B – Coughlin
SS – Reyes
3B – Hanley
LF – Ozuna
CF – Yelich
RF – Stanton
their young pitching struggles so it will be interesting to see how their #1 pick this past year works out. Chad James is a #3 starter at best – ceiling similar to Minor but without the polish of a college pitcher

Brian, this is a guy who has been rushing his entire life, he quit high shcool and got his GED in order to get his baseball career started faster. He didn’t look bad in spring last year. I agree with Harper. Lets see what happens if he does anything stupid like blowing a kiss at a pitcher after he just went yard. The minor league tactics won’t last long in the bigs. Let him do that one time and then its Zimmerman gets popped because he happens to be the next batter. IF he allows the vets like Zimmerman and Werth take him under their wing he will be fine. If not, he will be a huge problem.

We’ll see if they can sign Bourn next offseason if they sign Fielder in the next couple of weeks. They probably could, but it remains to be seen.
Bourn may get the biggest contract of any CF next year based on age, base-running and his glove. He isn’t the offensive player Victorino or Upton are. Very little chance he remains a Brave after next year, imo. Just send him that qualifying offer and get those two draft picks.

Efrim, I actually like the Nationals this year as a dark horse even if they don’t sign Fielder. I’m looking at the Braves and Nats and really don’t see a huge difference except our SP is a little better and it’s definitely deeper. Pen is ours too, but not by much. Their offense is better and defense is a wash,IMO.
I would not at all be surprised, and actually expect Wren to be thinking the team as it stands right now is perfectly fine. He could be exactly right, but the fan in me realy wants a trade for a big bat for the OF. No way that’s gonna happen. Maybe a decet platoon guy though. Just hope JHey can bounce back.

I can make a solid argument that the Braves are a #4 seed in the division as it stands today. First we have a losing record over the last two years against them. Pretty close though. Our top starters are probably even though when healthy we are deeper. Nats have changed dramatically defensively and are better offensively. Still, in a perfect scenario we could be challenging the Phillies again. Acquisitions and health will get us there. We have neither of those known yet.

“Last year, he [Fredo] had a tendency to rotate his days off so much, that he never had his best 8 out there.”
This tendency (especially early in the season) and his tendency to bunt whenever his lead-off hitter got on are hopefully two of the things that Fredo learned were not good ideas.
At least, this season, he can’t bat AGon second.

Ding. Ding. Ding. We have a winnah! And the gNats haven’t even signed Princess yet.
Braves finished way out in front of gNats, Marlins, and Mets, … even with Lowe, down years from Heyward and Prado, McLouth most of the season, Fredo’s managing style, and a historic September collapse.
Although it may happen (because it’s baseball), there is no way a solid argument can be made that Braves are the fourth best team in the NL East.

On rival divisional teams upgrading; most recently Washington signing Fielder:
Frank Wren: “We have all the pieces to compete with anybody. We love the direction we’re heading for this season and beyond. We’re looking forward to Heyward and Prado bouncing back like we think they can, for Freeman to keep developing and guys like Chipper, McCann and Uggla to once again carry the load. Then you have a young guy like Pastornicky who we see as our opening day shortstop and we feel he can be an All Star one day. We’re excited. And that’s not even taking into account the pitching we have. Top to bottom it is so full of potential. Again, we’re excited”.

it is not a bad idea to bunt when the leadoff hitter reaches base. Of course you actually have to have people who know how to bunt for it to be effective. If Bourn reaches, the #2 hitter should do everything to get Bourn into scoring position for CHipper, McCann and Uggla. Whether that is to take a pitch or swing at a bad one for Bourn to steal, bunt bourn over, hit and run, it doesn’t matter – get him in scoring position

On such a slow offseason for Braves:
Frank Wren: “It was slow for lots of teams just in general. For whatever reason, the market just didn’t develop and we were one of the teams it just didn’t happen for. We think y trading Lowe it opens a spot for one of our top pitching prospects to get his turn, whether that be a guy like Teheran or somebody else. That in and of itself is really exciting for us.
No takers for Jurrjens and, or Prado:
Frank Wren: “I think this got blown out of proportion by the media and the internet. Were we listening? Sure we were. You have to listen. But in the end, we just didn’t find a match for what we feel certain guys are worth. We’re excited to begin the season with not only both of those guys, but all of our guys”.

Frank Wren: “We have to be willing to give Chipper his days of rest. We brought Matty back because he can hit RHP so well and he is a valuable piece to have for us. Hinske is also a professional hitter. We’re excited…cough so is my bank account COUGH

There are people that will think Atlanta will win regardless. But I don’t see Florida as that much better than they were last year. Reyes is nice as well as Buerhle and Bell but these guys aren’t going to majically make FL a WS contender.
Buerhle eats innings but has always been a very hittable pitcher and has led the AL in hits allowed 4 of the last 7 years. Hasn’t had an ERA under 3.5 since 2005. Bell struggles away from Petco so who knows exactly how much of an upgrade he will be. Reyes is a gamer but struggles to stay healthy. He makes the biggest impact out of the 3 but he has to remain on the field to be a factor.
The Nationals are getting better but w/ out Fielder they aren’t quite as good as ATL. Now if they add Fielder they can quickly become a very dangerous team in the division but they get no credit for him until he signs. Right now I still see ATL as the second best team in the division w/ Washington and Florida on the rise.

You’re right, it’s not a bad idea. It’s a terrible idea, LOL. 99% of the time, anyway. Higher probability of scoring runs with a man at 1B and nobody out, than with a man at 2B and 1 out.
You want to take a pitch and attempt a steal, that’s one thing (though I’m not at all thrilled with that idea, either). But giving up outs, especially early-game, and especially-especially with nobody out, well, that’s how you kill rallies, not start them.

I don’t agree with that at all. There are times to advance the leadoff runner of an inning. I wouldn’t do it in the first inning but as the game advances the score dictates the way you play. When your playing for one run late in a game its a good way to go. Advancing your leadoff runner into scoring position through bunt is never a bad thing. Even if its an out its productive. Much better than your 2nd better sriking out or rolling you up into a double play. I don’t agree w/ doing it everytime a leadoff reaches but the situation that the game is in dictates what you do.

“N8…your Chiefs have not been in any conservation since Len Dawson won the super bowl in 1970…I think……so I would not bet any money on that…what even is more shameful they are in a powder puff division…” Lee
Agree and disagree. One dropped Kimbel Anders EASY touchdown pass from Joe Montana and the Chiefs are in the Superbowl in 93. So they were in the conversation as recently as then.
Besides, my “conversation” was about best LB crew. Which they WILL be in the conversation next year. Doesn’t mean it will translate into more wins or a SB birth. But argue all you want. You’ll be wrong.
As for the division? Really? Three 8-8 teams and a 7-9 team? Combined record of division 31-33.
Other divisions combined records:
NFC EAST: 30-34
NFC NORTH: 36-28
NFC SOUTH: 33-31
NFC WEST: 30-34
AFC EAST: 33-31
AFC NORTH: 37-27
AFC SOUTH: 26-38
Seems to me the competition is about on par with every other division. In fact if you take the 25-27 record of the 3 teams that DIDN’T win the AFC WEST it’s a better record than any of the other bottom 3 teams in every other division other than the AFC North. So one could argue it was one of the toughest divisions to win. No pushover teams anywhere in that division.
No Colts. No Browns. No Rams. No Bucs. No Redskins. No Vikings.
Not one single horrible team in that division. Every other division had at least one team with 5 or fewer wins.
But proceed.

P’cola Brave just don’t see Bourn going anywhere, unless Wren, wants to see less fans in the seats.

DOB,
I’m not sure how to contact you outside of Twitter, and I don’t have an account…So I’m not sure this will get to you or not…But I’ve got a question: I read an article (I believe from you) this offseason saying Frank Wren said he’s looking for a right handed power bat and a backup shortstop. I saw that Carlos Quentin was traded yesterday for a few propsects who supposedly don’t have much upside. If Quentin is an affordable right handed outfield bat, and if he was traded for almost nothing, why didn’t the Braves go after him? Which prospects would you compare the Padres guys to in our system? I don’t think I’ve ever written a comment to just complain about the Braves, but what happened here? Is Frank Wren just giving up on this season and gearing up for next year? Is he just hoping that every player who struggled (which seemed to be almost everyone) will rebound? What is going on here?

Oh yeah I forgot about that Nunez dude. He does seem like a fit for us I reckon. Would love to get Swisher in a deal too, but $$$ would obviously be the problem.

Basically,Carlos Quentin doesn’t fit the mold that Wren, and Fredi are looking for.

Whether Bourn is here won’t have a dramatic change in attendance. Every year people say he needs to make a big move and people will show up. Not true. There may be a few more people there at the beginning of the year but Atlanta doesn’t pack it out like other people. Probably more so because the city is full of people who aren’t from the area and already have teams they follow. Even with the playoff races we’ve had the last few years people don’t show up.
Bourn is nice but in all honesty he was very average with us during the time he was here last year. If that continues he won’t be worth the money he will be commanding on the open market. Bourn will be turning 30 in 2013 so giving a long term contract to a guy whose whole game relies on his legs is risky. There are plenty of other options in the OF next year.

Did Bourn come out,and say anything? Until he does,it’s all speculation.
