As tempted as Shanny might be with trading a TON to move up and select Andrew Luck, IMO it would be a mistake. Doing so wouldnt allow us to build a team around him going further with so many future draft choices gone. I’m a diehard fan and I’m used to the losing culture. I mean the last time they were great I was in diapers… But I’d like to see us get the QB we want where we draft and then trade back to stockpile more picks. Shanny is here on a 5 year deal to build the Redskins. While I expected us to win more than 5 games, Injuries killed us. But were going in right direction with the youth movement.
January 1st, 20129:45 pm
Kat – that helps, however…
For discussion sake only, who here would trade Beachy, Delgado, and Bethancourt for McCutchen?
January 1st, 20129:54 pm
This is why I kinda wanted the Falcons to play Dallas instead of the Giants. They kaboom too easily at times.
January 1st, 20129:55 pm
I would make that trade in a heartbeat. They would ask for more tho.
January 1st, 201210:03 pm
I would want to keep Beachy tho. I’d offer more than that too. If we did add McCutchen I believe that would force us to trade Prado. I’d ask for prospects only in return to help re-stock us after giving alot of McC. Then use the money saved from trading Prado to sign Wilson Betemit to be Chippers backup.
Delgado/Spruill/Bethancourt/Simmons/Perez (Example Offer) for Andrew McCutchen
Martin Prado for 2 good prospects
sign Wilson Betemit
sign McCutchen to a contract comparable to Justin Upton.
This scenario would make a bold statement and give us one of the best defensive Outfields in baseball. LF McCutchen CF Bourn RF Heyward Plus where adding a impact player for years to come.
January 1st, 201210:12 pm
Why does everyone want to trade our best catching prospect? McCann is at $13M this year and will be $15M or so on a long term contract if the Braves sign him after this option year when he will be a free agent. I’m not so sure I want a Ryan Howard like player with a Ryan Howard like contract bogging down the Braves in the future.
January 1st, 201210:16 pm
VaBravesFan Our defense at Shortstop is gonna be worse for sure.
that seems to be a sure thing, but it would be pretty likely even if gonzalez was coming back. alex gonzalez had the defensive season if his career in 2011. he will probably never repeat it. pastornicky just needs to offset it a little with his bat for it to be a wash or an improvement. gonzalez was really bad at the plate, almost comletly negating his defense.
im not seeing how removing almost all the dead weight that was left from the team makes it weaker. and it might still get better, too.
January 1st, 201210:21 pm
Pretty cool dream scenario lol
I agree about Bethancourt, I was just using him in example offer, but for the deal Brian suggested I think we would all pull the trigger.

Why does everyone want to trade our best catching prospect?
I’m not everyone and I do not think a team should depend sooooo much on this position (McCann) seems be their answer current answer to everything….catcher batting clean-up not a smart choice to me for any team..this day and time anyways….he (McCann) is out of the game itself at least every 4th to 5th game…position is too demanding an wears a player down…also ages a player like boozing and bar hopping…but I’m sure many will disagree…but McCann is not the future of this franchise …don’t care how many All – star games he has been in..only a little topping on the cake so to speak
January 1st, 201210:45 pm
DAP, see I don’t believe in that. AGon saved his pitchers’ ass with his play at SS. His offense was magnified mainly because of the guys who are supposed to be the offensive forces did not suppy as much as they should’ve. Fredi, for the most part, planted his butt at the bottom of the lineup and it being an unlucky year for the Braves, too many opportunities came up with him at the plate and he failed most times.
His glove will be missied, I think. Bet our groundall ace pitcher is already missing him.
January 1st, 201210:47 pm
DAP, AGon has always been a solid defender. I’d bet money he will be as good, or pretty close to as good at SS as last year in ‘12.
January 1st, 201210:50 pm
I would like to get a look at Pastornicky playing on major league surfaces that play truer and have better lighting than minor league fields. Also having that vacuum cleaner named Freeman may reduce the error totals that ended up being errors in the minors.
Alex Gonzalez made 12 errors or 2 per month. I can live with 18 or 3 per month, maybe even 24 or 4 per month because not all errors lead to scoring.
Gonzo at 2 errors per month and Pastor at 3 or 4 per month or less until we see how much he has improved over last season
January 1st, 201210:52 pm
I don’t think Cody Ross is a Brave this year. I’m with some on here who say that they probably would’ve signed him by now if they thought he’d be a good fit. I still think JJ goes for a young hitter like Austin Jackson.
January 1st, 201210:55 pm
Then again, Wren might be waiting to see exactly what he could eventually get for JJ before committing to a FA like Ross.
Damn if I know, but I’m ready to see what might just happen in these coming weeks.
January 1st, 201211:00 pm
“I’d say there is only one team with a better linebacking core than the Niners(Texans), and it’s really close.” Efrim
My Chiefs are going to be in that “conversation” next year if they find an adequte 2nd MLB to pair with Derrick Johnson. With Tamba Hali and Justin Houston on the outside, that’s 3/4 of a really solid if not fantastic 3-4 LB crew. Then when you add in Eric Berry coming back next year to pair with Kendrick Lewis, Brandon Carr and Brandon Flowers, the “back 7″ on that defense are pretty outstanding.
Just gotta find a way to find 3 new guys for the D-Line, because Dorsey and Tyson Jackson aren’t cutting it. LOL
January 1st, 201211:03 pm
I didnt like the Tyson and Dorsey picks for yall.
January 1st, 201211:07 pm
My Chiefs are going to be in that “conversation” next year if they find an adequte 2nd MLB to pair with Derrick Johnson. With Tamba Hali and Justin Houston on the outside,
N8…your Chiefs have not been in any conservation since Len Dawson won the super bowl in 1970…I think……so I would not bet any money on that…what even is more shameful they are in a powder puff division…
January 1st, 201211:17 pm
That was very useful…
January 1st, 201211:20 pm
Feeling much better now…
January 1st, 201211:24 pm
I’ll be back on the case tomorrow, folks. Will try to come up with something for a new blog. Who knows, maybe we’ll even have a move to report (though at this point, not holding breath waiting).
January 1st, 201211:28 pm
Congratulations to your Giants, VJ, and Kat, and Ward, and anyone else that is a Giants’ fan!
See you next weekend Atlanta…
January 1st, 201211:29 pm
Good night, Tony…my condolences to noted Cowboys’ fan Paul What’s-his-name…
January 1st, 201211:30 pm
January 1st, 201211:31 pm
Thanks, Tom! Did your team make the playoffs?
January 1st, 201211:33 pm
We just snuck in, buddy.
January 1st, 201211:35 pm
Good – I was rooting for you…
January 1st, 201211:36 pm
VJ.. nice game! Next weekend’s game against Falcons should be good. Atlanta may have a place in my heart for baseball but NY has the football piece..go big blue!
January 1st, 201211:39 pm
Kat – the Falcons did become my 2nd favorite team living there, but it’s not a very close 2nd…
Nolie, I’m also surprised at the ongoing confusion of some here over the shortstop position. Players such as Theriot or Cedeno are being considered for backup shortstop/utility role, not starting shortstop (and I get sense that Cedeno interest has been minimal). Pastornicky is penciled in as the starter and the Braves are just looking to add a competent backup so the kid isn’t thrown entirely into the fire without any proven veteran who can help and be at the ready to face a particular pitcher or just to give Pastornicky a day off, or play a while in case of injury.
Theriot isn’t much defensively, but at this point he’s probably the best guy left on free-agent market. He’s significantly better offensively than Cedeno, whose production is comparable to Gonzo’s — without as much power.
January 1st, 201211:40 pm
Congratulations, Ward, whenever you show up…
January 1st, 201211:51 pm
Pastornicky…..I LIKE IT
January 2nd, 201212:04 am
Too many syllables
January 2nd, 201212:08 am
‘grats, VJ, Kat & Ward. We will not be on speaking terms next Sunday at 1pm though.
January 2nd, 201212:09 am
Jeffrey’s team moved up in the playoffs
January 2nd, 201212:13 am
This is one of those hope for the best but expect the worst kind of playoff runs, imo. What with last season’s “run” being an epic fail.
January 2nd, 201212:16 am
What with last season’s “run” being an epic fail
Well, last year the Packers went 10-6 and were a 6 seed….
January 2nd, 201212:21 am
Gives me hope. I’d be happy with Matt Ryan’s first playoff win though.
ken, i am just like you a falcons fan. but a georgia guy.
not a huge NFL fan.
we got lucky today. would of rather”d of played dallas.
got lucky not having to played the saints.
January 2nd, 201212:22 am
Or, “Ryon” as the AJC home page has in one of the smaller headlines on the front page.
January 2nd, 201212:24 am
At least it wasn’t Crayon
January 2nd, 201212:26 am
Yeah, Brees and the Saints are as hot as anybody right now. They have a good shot at taking down the defending Super Bowl champs.
January 2nd, 201212:29 am
I hope you are as proud of Matthew Stafford as I am…he represented us very well this year, as did AJ Green.
even as a Falcons fan Brees seems pretty cool….
January 2nd, 201212:42 am
As past president of the BBWA (sp?), I would be very interested in your take on nolie’s post at 9:12 tonight.
January 2nd, 201212:49 am
For discussion sake only, who here would trade Beachy, Delgado, and Bethancourt for McCutchen?…brian
I would but I bet the Pirates would not
January 2nd, 201212:51 am
ken, just imagine if megatron would of gone to Georgia.
January 2nd, 201212:54 am
VJ- The G-Men……………I’m getting that Division cap………..Cruz…………………………..
January 2nd, 20121:01 am
VJ- Thanks, and Congratulations too. We avoided a double callapse.
January 2nd, 20121:02 am
Next year nothing, but secondaries, and more offensive line men.
January 2nd, 20121:05 am
nolie, for the talk? macc is tex waiting to happen. if we fall out of the race. macc is a huge chip.
considering our limiteted budget.
we dont have budget to pay a catcher in the nl 14 million a year.
January 2nd, 20121:07 am
uga: megatron would have looked good in red and black.
January 2nd, 20121:08 am
ken, better then reggie ball trying to toss the ball to him.
January 2nd, 20121:09 am
I hate to say it but I agree about McCann. While I would love for him to follow Chipper’s path kinda hard to see it with as much money other teams are throwing around. But for what its worth I’m friends with Brian McCann on facebook and told him I hope you stay a Brave for Life, he said “God Willing I will be”
January 2nd, 20121:12 am
Maybe McCann will take less money to stay, who knows. If there is a player on are team willing to do that, I’d pick McCann.
January 2nd, 20121:13 am
ken, did you read the paul johnson’s reply to losing to utah?
“well i laid a game plan out there and our guys just came up short”
the guy is the smartest guy in the room.
just ask turkey neck.
Coach (2012 Fredi's beisbol fandango)
January 2nd, 20121:15 am
Falcon’s are 1-3 against playoff caliber competition. I don’t think they are up to the task.
January 2nd, 20121:17 am
Well, we always called them that “little ole vo-tech school down from The Varsity”. Just some good old fashioned hate, a perfect phrase for the relationship between the 2 schools.
January 2nd, 20121:19 am
VaBravesFan, he is a catcher. he aint piazza.
his numbers dont equate 13 or 14 million a year. he is a luxury on a high payroll team.
not on this team.
January 2nd, 20121:21 am
ken, that little trade school right.
that said we are lucky to have mark richt.
January 2nd, 20121:22 am
macc is tex waiting to happen Uga
oh baloney. MacC has three or four years left
January 2nd, 20121:24 am
paul johnson is an arse. a total arse. two more years tops.
even their guys will not dispute.
January 2nd, 20121:25 am
I’d trade those three for McCutchen in a NY minute, but I doubt it would be enuff
I was checking some sites, and nothing. I think all we will see is a SS signing. I read an article on Louis Durango, and he might be challenging for the out-field spot in the Spring. He can use his speed, and bunt to get on.He might be a player to watch if we like the scrappy players? Will J.J. be traded?Possible, but wouldn’t hold my breath?
January 2nd, 20121:27 am
nolie, he is under control two more years.
if we fall out of the race this season, IF, woud you not consider trading him?
January 2nd, 20121:28 am
January 2nd, 20121:33 am
if i were his agent i would have him looking at the american league.
that is where is service will be extended.
the dude can hit. give him the dh and favorable matchups and he might hit 30 dingers.
January 2nd, 20121:39 am
Agree on Paul Johnson, he’s a jerk.
What has happened to Chris Berman’s voice? I’ve never been a fan of his bombast, but now he sounds like some demon from a Z-grade horror movie. On the other hand, Linda Cohn looks better than she did 20 years ago, but that’s not saying a lot. I haven’t watched ESPN Sports Center in a long time, they got rid of most of the reporters I liked.
January 2nd, 20121:41 am
talking about being overated “woody allen”
January 2nd, 20121:43 am
So my wife’s wallet was stolen yesterday in Kolkata. Usually, such a thing should just be a nuisance–cancelling credit cards, putting in a fraud alert with the credit bureaus, and being out some cash. Alas, her green card was in the wallet. Without it, she can’t come back to the country. And, of course, it was on the morning of the first day of a three-day holiday weekend. And the consulate in the city does not deal with/issue green cards. I might end up doing the solo thing for a bit more time.
January 2nd, 20121:45 am
ken, funny you mention linda cohn. her brookyn mets voice is hard to hide.
she takes shots at atlanta whenever she gets a chance.
January 2nd, 20121:47 am
ken, linda cohn looks like john elway.
January 2nd, 20121:50 am
Maybe for a complete body of work, but he has most definitely had his moments. Annie Hall, Manhattan and Hannah and her Sisters are all great work. Some of the early comedies–Love and Death comes to mind–are wonderful. I agree that he has had long stretches of very weak films, but he has his moments.
January 2nd, 20121:53 am
uga-brave 1:47 am post comedy………LOL
January 2nd, 20121:55 am
Kathy Griffin looked like she fell from the ugly tree, and hit every branch down, and she took the New Years rating down with her……..
January 2nd, 20121:57 am
Talk tomorrow,have Monday Off,and Peace Out………
January 2nd, 20121:58 am
moe, i knew annie hall would come up.
but for a director of several films he does not add up.
i know from the art fan crew, he would have his fans. that said i think he somewhat overated.
January 2nd, 20122:03 am
Bas, there goes ward looking not like not ward at 1:55.
January 2nd, 20122:07 am
uga-brave–I agree. I was a big fan, when younger but have been sorely disappointed with much of his overall work. Even in the heyday of his work, there was much that was derivative (his homage to Bergman in Interiors of to Fellini in Stardust Memories) or that was schlock (Husbands and Wives, perhaps). Out of his dozens of films, I think only a few stand out. But those few are quite good. I mean Tolstoy wrote some pretty crappy books–Resurrection or The Forged Coupon. But those couple of books–War and Peace or Anna Karenina–are really quite impressive. (Not to say that Allen is a Tolstoy but was thinking of Tolstoy because of the War and Peace reference and because I was reading Isaiah Berlin’s essay ‘The Hedgehog and the Fox’ on Tolstoy earlier.
January 2nd, 20122:15 am
uga: she looked like John Elway’s ugly brother, but I was surprised when I saw her a few days ago for the first time in ages, she has had some “work”.
Good night all and Happy New Year. I enjoyed the Blog today, some good conversation and not a bunch of “bi!chy little girls” as Sam Axe of Burn Notice calls and idiot.
Enjoy the games tomorrow.
January 2nd, 20122:22 am
My favorite Woody Allen movie is “Sweet and Lowdown” with Sean Penn and Samantha Morton. Not a typical Allen movie, but just a visual and musical treat with some beautiful 30’s jazz and a terrific performance by Ms. Morton.
January 2nd, 20122:23 am
January 2nd, 20122:24 am
i know ken knows GATA.
January 2nd, 20122:26 am
Uga brave- That was me,just put a little joke out there. peace my friend, and Peace Out……..
January 2nd, 20122:43 am
uga: that would be what Erk would say, right?
January 2nd, 20122:50 am
absolutely. get after that ass. erk, the man.
then loren, would say well larry down here on the sidelines it is pretty froggy. back yo you larry.
January 2nd, 20122:51 am
till tmmrw. ken.
January 2nd, 20123:02 am
Moe Berg, uga-brave: Woody Allen’s Midnight In Paris was one of my favorite movies of 2011 and his best since at least the mid ’90s, in my opinion. He had a long drought, but to me this one was as enjoyable as Hannah and Her Sisters and Manhattan. I think it’s also become his highest-grossing movie ever.
January 2nd, 20123:08 am
pulp fiction on hbo. tough not do continue watching.
January 2nd, 20123:12 am
actually, it is a hard movie not to continue to watch.
great movie. top ten for sure.
January 2nd, 20123:16 am
nolie, he is under control two more years….Uga
if you mean McCutchen, you are wrong.. he has only played two full years and 100 or so games. there is no way he only has two left. Efrim said he has 4 left IIRC, but he has at least three
January 2nd, 20123:21 am
nolie, do you ever sleep?
January 2nd, 20123:26 am
usually from 6am to 3 pm unless something is scheduled
January 2nd, 20123:28 am
well, i gotta go. later you old scout.
January 2nd, 20123:29 am
He will be arbitration eligible in 2013, and will be eligible for free agency after the 2015 season if no extension is reached…..PIRATES PROSPECTS site
so 4 years indeed, Efrim was correct
January 2nd, 20124:28 am
Nolie, nice to see that someone is still up.
