The Jesus Guzman kid is pretty interesting from SD. A RH 1B/LF. Hes hit at every level so far and in his first real chance as a starter he took off (.312 .369 .478 .847).

Yep, P’cola Brave, not only am I not surprised Ed Wade went back to the Phumblins, I called it.
After hand-delivering Roy Oswalt to the Phumblins despite receiving better offers (most notably from the Cardinals), Uncle Eddie even made sure Houston paid almost all of Oswalt’s salary. Then, he gave his former employers Hunter Pence at the deadline. He had to know he was getting the boot after guiding the Astros so far into the basement they needed a stairway just to find darkness. What better way to ensure going back to your old stomping grounds.

As seen last week when the Niners lost to the Cards, I am well aware they cannot overlook any team. They are still playing for something and will not let up next week. (Although, if they win tonight and next week and the Saints lose, they will clinch the #2 seed. GO FALCONS!!!)

Same old crap. Braves are looking for a right handed power hitter. For how many years now? We had a good SS but he didn’t hit good enough. (He did, however, hit 15 home runs in 2011)) We’ll probably get some joker at SS who hits worse than AGon and much worse defense. But, all that is ok because Wren is comfortable with the team we have. Good or Bad, he makes the same money. He doesn’t want to give up any of our good prospects.

Damn it, you can’t get a Mickey Mantle by giving up a Milo Swartz.

I like the idea that Frank Wren has waited until the top Free Agent pitchers are off the market Burhle, Wilson and now even Darvish. This establishes that all teams wanting quality starting pitching must trade for it. Latos is also out of play so that makes Gio & JJ the two top targets left. The Braves should be in their best position of the offseason now until spring training. I’d rather have Prado for sure than Seth Smith. Prado is very valuable to the Braves as he’s Chipper’s back up and can play 2b and 1B in case of an injury to Uggla or Freeman. I think we trade from our surplus which is pitching. For me I’d have to be blown away to trade Prado unless it’s to Baltimore and we get both Adam Jones and JJ Hardy back in the deal. If we traded JJ and Prado for those two that would make sense. Hinske can play 3B for short spells ( a day or two) and we have Brandon Hicks if we need him to spell Chipper in case of a DL stint. We wouldn’t miss Martin as much if we had Hardy at SS and Jones in LF. We could get by with a solid glove at 3B to spell Chipper because we’d be getting good production from SS and LF.

Ward

December 20th, 2011
2:55 am

I like the Baltomore idea too, much better than the Rockies. Seth Smith is about as equal,as Prado. Slightly difference, but not much.It will be interesting to see what happens, but the longer there is no news. I feel that Prado, and J.J. will be staying.

“But if they move Prado, it sure seems they’d need a backup third baseman in addition to a backup shortstop, rather than one who could do both. Otherwise, who’d play third if Chipper got hurt and rookie shortstop Tyler Pastornicky (assuming he’s starting) struggled or just had nagging injury or needed a day off?”

– DOB

Yes, indeed. The return on Prado would have to be darned good, given the situation on the left side of the infield.

Or it could just mean that the teams that were the most desperate for quality pitching acquired what they were seeking. The rest of the teams are bargain hunters, just like the Braves, and may not be willing to pay top dollar in the trade market for a guy like JJ with a history of health problems. GIO seems to be in bigger demand than JJ and I haven’t seen anything close to impressive in what teams are offering the A’s for him. If I were looking for pitching I would not mortgage my future on a guy like JJ who may be lights out for a couple months then sitting on the bench with a sore (shoulder\ribs\knee\you name it) for half the season.

Great update, DOB. I know that he is trying, but if FW does not upgrade the club after shedding $20,000,000 in payroll from last year (KK, Nate, Gonzo and Lowe) he will be a major league failure. Backup infielders and AVERAGE left fielders are the easiest positions to fill.

The Braves either need to sign Beltran or stand pat. No one wants Cody freakin Ross or Seth Smith. Prado is better than both. Still though, with all of the money coming off the books next year, I think we could afford a 2-3 year contract for Beltran if we back loaded it a bit. We could then trade JJ for a prospect and keep Prado to back up Beltran and Chipper to make sure they stay fresh.

I want a fun team to watch this year. Payroll doesn’t concern me.

DOB – has a team ever posted for a Japanese player and then not signed him? Would the player then go back to Japan, or would the team with the second highest posting fee get a shot?

DOB: What is the payroll situation? We got rid of KK’s $7 million, Nate’s $5 million, Gonzo’s $2.5 million and Lowe’s $5 million for a total of $19.5 million. We will then have arbitration increases of maybe half of that. Why can’t we get a decent free agent with that? Why get rid of Prado when we haven’t spent what we have to spend? First of all, McCann gets a raise after hitting all the qualifiers of $5 mil this year and Uggla makes almost $4 mil more this year than last year. That’s almost half of your savings right there. Add an extra $2 mil on Prado, another $2 mil on Jurrjens and you’ve already spent $13 mil of the savings. Add the rest of the arb eligibles and you end up with somewhere around $5 mil left – which is about the amount that has been speculated they have.
