If our buddy Matt Diaz could return to the level of hitting against lefties that he showed in 2006, 07 and 09; we could be a lot less susceptible to tough lefties.

While a Brave, Matty hit well in ALL years that he wasn’t injured. Coincidence? I don’t know. And then he goes to Pittsburgh and has a mediocre year with the bat.

Maybe he’s done. But being the ultra positive Brave fan, I am looking for a big bounce back year from Matt. He won’t be 34 until March.

DOB, do you have any input on whether you have seen anything in his play when he returned last summer that would indicate he is capable of a comeback?DS1

He still hit for a high average vs. lefties last season (.295), but just not with any of the power we were used to seeing from him. Went 39-for-132 vs. lefties with eight walks and only seven extra-base hits including ZERO homers. Diaz had a .336 OBP and meager .356 slugging percentage vs. lefties, for a career-low .692 OPS vs. lefties. He had an OPS below .800 vs. lefties only one other time in his career, and Diaz OPS’d at .964 vs. lefties in ‘07, 1.103 in ‘09 and .830 in ‘10.

Did he lose that much in a year for any particular reason other than age? Guess we’ll find out, but seems like he should have another good couple of years in him. I don’t think the bat’s slowed that much.

Thanks Dave. Exactly what I was looking for. I’ve known about Matt’s good showing against lefties most of his career. And in those 3 specific years, he was nothing short of phenomenal against LH pitching.

If you think his bat hasn’t slowed much, that would be a positive.

In case I forget to say it later, thanks again for all your work. And have a great Christmas holiday season!

Rival executives say the asking price for John Danks was extraordinarily high, equivalent of what the Rockies had asked for Ubaldo Jimenez. And when the White Sox weren’t able to extricate that from any of the interested the teams, they decided, in the end, to invest long-term in Danks. Maybe they looked at the upcoming free agent markets and figured that inevitably, they would be looking for a pitcher just like Danks — and wouldn’t be able to find one, unless they joined the frenzied bidding that will probably swirl around Cole Hamels next fall.

But it’s hard to square the Danks signing with Chicago’s decision to move closer Sergio Santos at the winter meetings, where GM Ken Williams said that the rebuilding had begun.

With Danks off the board, the best available starters in the trade market are now Gio Gonzalez and Matt Garza, with Jeff Niemann and Wade Davis also in the discussions. – Buster Olney’s blog

Doesn’t make any sense to extend Danks, imo. KW just comes off looking confused. He must of gotten absolutely nothing in trade talks. As to Buster’s last comment, he has routinely mentioned Gio, Garza, and one of Davis or Niemann as trade options and never mentioned Jurrjens. While Rosenthal and Heyman, especially Heyman, have been all over Jurrjens. Interesting the viewpoints of the national writers.

It’s just that there is so much hand wringing around here, because we haven’t done enough on Dec 22.

I go back to the fact that we traded for Bourn at the trading deadline and filled the need wewere going to fill this offseason. Again, if the news doesn’t come out that the Braves are listening on Jurrjens and Prado, I don’t think folks would be as anxious. Upgrade in outfield, yes, but I never got the impression that it was a monumental need like some of the other teams in the league had.

All that said, stuff usually happens before Christmas, but this years market has been so slow, that it looks like it will carry over through to mid-January.

Our Bravos still want that big bat in left field………

Yo Wren, take some advice and use common sense. Uggla, left field. Trade for some young, capable defensive minded infielders. Strengthen the up the middle defense along with adding another utility player and some more speed.

What I would do.

Trade JJ to the White Sox for Eduardo Escobar, Brent Lillibridge and one or two prospects. Move Uggla to LF. Leaving the Braves younger, more athletic, adding speed and better defensively while still lowering payroll. Like I keep saying, it’s baseball, not rocket science.

How about Will Rhymes as our backup off the bench. He could fill many holes, he can play all 3 outfield positions, 2B, 3B and SS. And he would come at a very reasonable price, probably close to league min. Only issue is he’s got limited major league experence.

Just think if the Braves signed Craig Counsell, who turns 42 in August. Some days, they’d have a left side of the infield that’s 40 and 42. And most other days, they’d have an infield with two 22-year-olds (Pastornicky and Freeman).

I was curious about when Coach’s oft-repeated ‘it’s not rocket science’ became a standardized part of our nomenclature for tasks that are thought to be not so very complex. And why is it continuing, since rocket science is hardly on the cutting edge of scientific development–that could probably be claimed by some form of genetics or bioengineering (fields which date back almost as long as modern rocket science–when you include the race for the structure of DNA won by Watson and Crick or the discovery of how DNA replicates in Meselson/Stahl).

Anyway, I digress. Apparently brain surgery was the preferred way of indicating that a task was not difficult in comparison until the 1980s, when the rocket science comparison began to show up–seemingly in comparison to coaching football. Who knows how long it will be before rocket science goes the way of brain surgery, and we identify some other way to indicate complicated skill sets.

This post is apropos of nothing. Just think that Coach way overuses the phrase.

I still think the Braves should make a run after Gio and see what happens. With no good options to clearly upgrade LF through a trade, they should see if they can pry away Gio. Similar to when the Braves needed offense but signed Maddux. The Braves could use a top lefty in the rotation to provide some balance. The Braves could beat most of the trade packages mentioned in the rumor mills without touching Teheran, Vizcaino, or Delgado.

I would love to see the Braves start the season with a rotation of Hudson, Gio, Hanson, Jurrjens, Beachy/Minor (whoever wasn’t moved in the package for Gio). If all goes well – Hudson, Hanson, Jurrjens, and Medlen all show they are healthy and effective, the Braves could move Jurrjens in the summer for a much better package than what they could get today. If they are having health problems in the rotation, then keep him.

Give Cody Ross a chance.

Well, the Rangers are out of it and the Orioles wouldn’t want to give up top prospects given the position they are in. Again, Red Sox are a great fit. Probably the best fit in terms of prospects and a major league ready LF in Josh Reddick. Yes, it is. Love the sweet peppers/sausage combo, and then when you add on the fresh garlic and fresh spicy red peppers they give you in the back by the ovens, oh man… when is lunch?

I didn’t even notice the little private area before, because it’s not really much of a space. It’s all the way in the back left, behind the 3rd row of tables. It looks like a small little closet or work room or something (my wife just told me it said “Dough Room” above it), with a plexi glass window, with one bench table (like those in the rest of the place) in there. Not a posh space or anything, but useful to get a little space from the crowd. To his credit, Blank and his wife were hanging out in the back amongst the crowd watching the ovens while they were waiting for their pizza.

ESPN rumor mill is reporting that the Braves packaged Martin Prado and Jair Jurrjens for Adam Jones, but that the Orioles balked at the deal. Personally, I am glad the Orioles did balk, and I think they were stupid to do so! Getting both Prado and Jurrjens for Jones would have been a steal. Is Wren really that high on Jones? The man is a career .275 BA/.313 OBA type player with 25 HR power in a homer-friendly park. I’m thinking those stats are not much different than what Prado could do there, and Jurrjens is a good young starting pitcher.

The O’s are doing exactly what the Braves are doing. They have a guy that they like, but if you want to over pay for him, they might consider a trade.

Pretty simple, really.

No deal today.

What was reported this morning was Baltimore wanted two of Minor, Beachy, Tehran, Delgado and Viz. The Braves balked at the idea.

We are going to need to trade a high pitching prospect to get a top of the line hitter. Pitching doesn’t win alone you need hitting. Look at us over the past three years with the worst hitting outfielders in baseball. If we had picked up Big bat at trade deadline good chance we make playoffs. Maybe trade Minor and JJ for Adam Jones and pull up Gilmartin for that lefty we need.
