HEY! 1 again!
December 19th, 201110:19 pm
If this Rox rumor is true and its Smith/Wheeler for Prado…
Ii Wrens plan really having Seth Smith/Matt Diaz start at LF and Pastornicky at shortshop?
How the heck does that make the offense better for 2012, and where is the added payroll that he was talking about?
December 19th, 201110:20 pm
is wrens plan**
December 19th, 201110:21 pm
Falling 1 game short and trying to bring back the same squad is a bad strategy IMO. Add in the fact that we’ve moved two vets and added just a rookie.
There is a reason why we play 162 games and dont stop mid August. This is a solid team and a borderline playoff team which seems to be our building strategy these days. Everything has to fall into place next year for the Braves. Im still hopeful for an upgrade, that doesnt include the Seth Smiths/Ronny Cedenos of the world.
December 19th, 201110:23 pm
How in the name of the Flying Spaghetti Monster does Ashes and Fire not make your top 50?
December 19th, 201110:26 pm
If possible, I would sort the three albums I bought this year into a coherent order, but it is too difficult for me…
December 19th, 201110:27 pm
“Trey–Work is okay. Last week was good–had a lot of money coming in. But still trying to make lots of cuts. I think i am finally getting past the point of having to let staff go after lots of cuts this fall.”
Moe, I’m glad to hear that it is going okay for you. Sounds like you are starting to get a hold of the job much better. It just takes time once you start something new.
December 19th, 201110:28 pm
no prob Venice
Thanks for the new log DOB. Very good considering you’re almost forced to reach for things concerning the Braves. No leaks or nuthin.
December 19th, 201110:29 pm
One of my faves from this year got an honorable mention – absolutely love Adele’s 21.
December 19th, 201110:31 pm
The rockies need pitching more than Prado. They will be better off taking Jurrgens and a prospect like Lipka or a pitcher for Smith plus Wheeler.
December 19th, 201110:33 pm
Glad to see local Bradford Cox’s Atlas Sound on your list…that album is awesome.
December 19th, 201110:36 pm
Here’s the thing that turns me off of a Smith/Wheeler package … they’re both lefties. Especially with Wheeler since he’d be the future of us. Freeman/Mac/Heyward and if they were to sign Bourn long term then adding another lefty in Wheeler is LHH overkill. Is it not?
December 19th, 201110:38 pm
Surprised cold war kids didn’t make your list. It’s definitely not their strongest album (robbers and cowards is superb) but it’s still solid.
#48 for DBT? Really?
Longtime MLB GM Ed Wade has returned to the Phillies in a scouting position
Is anyone really suprised by this.
Wheeler may improve the team longterm, but Smith doesnt do anything to improve the team for 2012. Taking away Prado or Jurrjens to add another lefty doesnt add up.
December 19th, 201110:39 pm
WHERES MASTODON!!!!!!? But anyway…good list i suppose.
Mark in WR
December 19th, 201110:41 pm
Look again, Chris. Mastodon made it. One of the best bands anywhere, any genre.
I guess you weren’t too impressed with the Chili Pepper’s new album.
Intriguing hip-hop selections, very cool to see Pharoahe Monch getting praise in the AJC.
Shoutout to ATL product Killer Mike as well.
December 19th, 201110:42 pm
How ’bout that? Two of my favorite albums made the top three (”Bad As Me” and “El Camino”). I only own four out of the Top 50 (”Undun” and “So Beautiful or So What”), so I guess I did pretty well.
I’m sure I’ll glean some good stuff from this year’s list.
Thanks for putting it together, DOB.
December 19th, 201110:43 pm
Trey–It is getting better. Most definitely. Still stressful but becoming more manageable. How are you doing? Are you getting home for the holidays?
December 19th, 201110:45 pm
I actually met Black Joe Lewis and most of the Honey Bears in Wilmington. They were good dudes. They were opening for Okkervil. It was an amazing show.
Frank from KS (now in CO)
December 19th, 201110:46 pm
Oh heck, Wren had a chance to sign a SS, but he sit there and let Rollins resign with Philly.
(insert eye roll)
December 19th, 201110:48 pm
Still holding out hope the Braves acquire Maicer Izturis.
Good to see Tom Waits at #1 but where’s the new RHCP album????
December 19th, 201110:50 pm
Wren seems to have a problem with keeping his stories straight depending on what side of the bed he gets up on.
November 8th, Pastornicky isn’t ready yet.
December 2nd he says “We’re comfortable with him at shortstop at the major league level. We think he’ll grow and get better, and offensively he’s shown us that he can handle the bat over the last year and a half. I think he’s at least a 20-plus stolen base player at the major league level, and his numbers in the minor leagues were double that… Some of that would be predicated on where he bats in the order, as well.”
So without taking a bat off his shoulder in the off season, Pastornicky is suddenly big leagure ready when a month ago he was not?
I think Wren overestimated the market and the longer he waits the more likely it is that he makes a panic move with JJ or Prado and ends up with a dud deal that is going to look more like payroll relief than actual help for the team on the field.
December 19th, 201110:51 pm
They will be better off taking Jurrgens and a prospect like Lipka or a pitcher for Smith plus Wheeler…Manolo
Braves prolly wouldn’t trade JJ alone for Smith and Wheeler, let alone add a prospect too
What does it mean if you have listened to the music of only 3 of DOB’s top 50 albums for the year?
Too much MLB on XM maybe?
December 19th, 201110:52 pm
No love for Leonard Cohen’s Songs from the Road? Or was that last year?
December 19th, 201110:56 pm
means you have good taste Wayne
I see we have one of out whiners back under another name…….
December 19th, 201110:57 pm
I’d say sign Cody Ross for 2 yrs/ 9 mil and try to trade w/ the Angels for Maicer Izturis.
December 19th, 201111:00 pm
I must admit that I don’t know Kurt Vile but was just listening to the namesake original Kurt Weill. He and Brecht formed a great duo.
December 19th, 201111:01 pm
you would think that if the Braves really wanted Ross they would have signed him already so someone else wouldn’t keep him from them.
December 19th, 201111:02 pm
Watching Davidson challenge KU. Thinking about you, Dave. Don’t stress,
December 19th, 201111:03 pm
I think Dave has a point … if Braves really wanted Ross would they not have signed him by now? I have a feeling he won’t be on the market much longer.
nolie–I agree with you about Ross. If he is still there and they need someone, then they will consider him. But I don’t think he is a target–no reason to pay more to have him than Prado.
December 19th, 201111:04 pm
Dave, it’s Destroyer – Kaputt, not the other way around.
While on that topic … it’s funny how much i like Neko Case and Destroyer individually … but don’t care much for New Pornographers.
December 19th, 201111:05 pm
P’cola– I would also love Macier Izturis. What would it take to get him? He does makes some $$ though.
so you like older porn better huh?
I only saw your post after I hit submit, no joking. Great minds think alike. Right? Or did I just get lucky that once?
December 19th, 201111:06 pm
The Reds are interested in Ross, according to MLB Trade Rumors.
December 19th, 201111:07 pm
A guy who had a really good year that theres been no talk about is Reed Johnson. I guess hes your poor mans Cody Ross.
December 19th, 201111:08 pm
Jeff Passan @JeffPassan 1m
The Texas Rangers have won the posting auction of Japanese right-hander Yu Darvish with a record $51.7M bid, sources tell Yahoo! Sports.
December 19th, 201111:09 pm
He makes $3.8 this year in the last year of contract. I don’t know what it would take now that they sure’d up their rotation w/ CJ Wilson. They kind of have a logjam with position players. I don’t know if there is a prospect that would fit and maybe a decent bullpen arm.
December 19th, 201111:13 pm
Izturis looks to have one season left at 3.8 mil. his numbers are ok, but just a career 95 OPS+. nothing all that special except in comparison to what has been available as free agents at SS this year IMO
doesn’t look like he has played all that much short, but plays about 5 different spots
December 19th, 201111:14 pm
Wow – DOB’s boys fall to Davidson…
He would be a perfect fit. Plays 2nd, ss, 3rd. I think he is affordable.
Maybe they want Merek back. Kidding
December 19th, 201111:15 pm
nolie don’t want to talk to me anymore … ok.
I’d rather have Eric Aybar than Izturis.
If Matt Diaz is on the roster in 2012…wheww….expect more of the same!!! It would not surprise me to see a “Big announcement” from the Braves…..”we have signed Matt Diaz to a 5 year deal, for $500,000.00 (yes I know it is well below the league minimum, but his worth and value)..to be our starting left fielder. We feel he deserves this contract and deserves to be our starting left fielder after his outstanding 2011, while sitting on the bench for the Pittsburg Pirates and being such an integral part of our monumental collapse down the stretch…..1 of our many efforts to strengthen our roster……btw..he is a helluva club house guy”
I don’t know what is worse, that I just wasted my time by typing this post, or that he would be considered to start/platoon in left field.
December 19th, 201111:16 pm
we talked about Reed a lot last season at the deadline P’c. he would prolly be cheap but he seldom gets many PAs most years
DOB – we had to opt out of watching Kansas play USC Thursday because I work late – sorry about tonight…
I like Cody Ross for his flexibility to play all 3 OF slots. But if FW is making a play for a larger profile OF’er (Adam Jones type) then it would make perfect sense that he not pull the trigger on a FA signing before exhausting all the other options.
But if you wait too late, you might not get to dance.
December 19th, 201111:17 pm
No games scheduled.
LHRP ARODYS VIZCAINO [0.00 ERA] 1.0 IP, 1 H, 3 BF, 2 GO/ 0 AO.
No other games scheduled.
Future BRAVE SS RONNIE CEDENO [.261 BA] 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B .
No BRAVES played.
Only game scheduled.
sure I do CTB, just need some time to respond, I’m an old man afterall…..
December 19th, 201111:18 pm
I’d about as soon have Ross as Jones myself
Izturis doesn’t knock your socks off but its an offensive upgrade from what we’ve had. UZR has him as a plus defender at SS. I know a whole season there may change that but you have to like the increase while giving Pastornicky time to mature. If something happens to Chipper then Izturis can slide to 3B w/ Pastornicky at SS if no one else is added to OF.
December 19th, 201111:19 pm
How many different monikers does this make?
December 19th, 201111:20 pm
Awesome blog DOB. Even more impressive considering nothing has happened! You’re a real pro. Thanks!
December 19th, 201111:21 pm
yeah P’c I see some advantages in Izty, would depend on what the want back since it is just one season
Reed Johnson might be the perfect 4th outfielder.
But you’re young at heart nolie and that’s what matters. Ya know, TnBrian is in the past … he had a fun ride, but we all should move on.
December 19th, 201111:22 pm
Matt Diaz just seems to be a waste of space on the roster. I’m really shocked at the complete lack of power last year. He still had a .295 average against LHP but absolutely no power.
December 19th, 201111:23 pm
I don’t like the fact that Jones doesn’t walk much.
GG. TTFN Y’all. Take care.
December 19th, 201111:26 pm
Uh-oh, 1 yard line. Field goal coming up.
December 19th, 201111:27 pm
Tom – o ye of little faith…
Was the Ed Wade hiring payback to him for handing them Hunter Pence? Heck, he would qualify for a Braves FO job if that were the case.
Moe, I’m alright, for the most part, but the stress is slowly getting worse. I am home for the holidays, but dreading going back next Wednesday to work.
Looked like a touchdown to me…
December 19th, 201111:28 pm
The only one for me. Someone else may post under this name or with similar views…..I’m on the coast, Savannah….
It did to Harbaugh, too
December 19th, 201111:29 pm
Sell your crap someplace else… we’re all stocked up, here!
Sure looked like a TD to me….
December 19th, 201111:30 pm
Why does Wren want to deal Prado for Seth Smith? I hope he has some very unpleasant things happen to him if he makes that deal. “Hey lets trade for a guy who, in a hitters park like Coors, hits .283 lifetime with 15 homers last year compared to Prado who is a lifetime .290 hitter, has more seasons with 100+ OPS+. Oh yeah and Prado is a year younger. We need more guys with age. Gotta get that average age up some.” That sounds very solid Frank. You need to step down because you are insanely stupid.
Nice, LAdy (and Efrim)!
December 19th, 201111:32 pm
The Braves and Rockies have continued discussing a possible deal that would send Seth Smith to Atlanta for Martin Prado, according to MLB.com’s Thomas Harding. The Braves appear to be seeing what they can get for Jair Jurrjens first, however. Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports examined possible suitors for Smith earlier today, including the Braves despite their preference for a right-handed hitter.
I don’t see the upgrade here in moving Prado. Especially at this point in the offseason. I don’t think Smith away from Coors and Matt Diaz who is coming off a 0 HR year is going to make the offense better. If anything it puts another LH bat in the lineup.
Why don’t we wait until FW makes a bad trade before we crucify him for doing so? OK
December 19th, 201111:35 pm
DS1 – why wait for facts to cloud our judgment?…
Why don’t we wait until FW makes a bad trade before we crucify him for doing so? OK
No! We need to stop him from doing something foolish.
CAB – Me too! Good thing they got it to him the next play, he earned that one!
December 19th, 201111:37 pm
Someone noted on Twitter while ago that Darvish’s $51.7 posting fee was higher than five MLB teams’ payrolls in 2011. And that’s just the posting fee. Rangers still have to sign him to a contract, which I’d guess will probably push the total cost to way more than $100 million, perhaps even the $125 million neighborhood. (They get the posting fee back if they can’t sign him.)
December 19th, 201111:38 pm
Enjoy watching the miss, but feel so bad for my guy Mile when they show him on the sidelines…
If Smilin Frank wanted to make that Seth Smith deal, it woulda happened a LONG time ago. Frank is not going to do it, or he’s trying to get a max haul out of the deal.
While I love Marteen, I do trust FW to make good moves for the Braves.
December 19th, 201111:40 pm
Dan Frazer, a character actor whose Hell’s Kitchen upbringing prepared him for a long run of roles as a blue-collar type or a cop, most notably as the beleaguered supervising officer Capt. Frank McNeil on “Kojak,” died on Friday at his home in Manhattan. He was 90.
Mr. Frazer was also in two of Woody Allen’s early comedies. In “Take the Money and Run” (1969), he played Mr. Allen’s thieving character’s psychiatrist. In “Bananas” (1971), he was a priest again, peddling New Testament cigarettes in a send-up of a TV commercial. “New Testament cigarettes — I smoke ’em,” Mr. Frazer’s priest says, exhaling smoke and sticking a thumb skyward. “He smokes ’em.” (NY Times)…
It’s good to watch the Niners just run all over the Steelers, couldn’t do that against the Ravens. The O Line looks a lot better this week!
Concerning Yu…………. and some folks thinks a Carlos Beltran signing would be a big risk.
Darvish was, reportedly, looking for $75mm for 5 years. Yeah, anything even close would put the entire deal at over $100mm.
December 19th, 201111:41 pm
As I’ve said all along, I think Braves would trade Prado to Rockies for Seth Smith and a center fielder, preferably Wheeler (I don’t think they’d take Blackmon). But I still can’t see them trading Prado straight up for Smith.
December 19th, 201111:42 pm
December 19th, 201111:43 pm
Watched KU lose to Davidson tonight in Kansas City. Sloppiest and least impressive KU team in a decade or more. The run of seven consecutive Big 12 titles is going to end this season for KU, barring major, major improvement.
Davidson, on the other hand, executed well and hit big 3’s when they had to.
December 19th, 201111:49 pm
Well… HOLY smokes!!
Aldon Smith. Beast.
December 19th, 201111:51 pm
Sloppiest and least impressive KU team in a decade or more
And KU will still beat my Trojans by 20+…
December 19th, 201111:52 pm
The Steelers are tying to hand this one to us………..
December 19th, 201111:54 pm
