DOB,
If this Rox rumor is true and its Smith/Wheeler for Prado…
Ii Wrens plan really having Seth Smith/Matt Diaz start at LF and Pastornicky at shortshop?
How the heck does that make the offense better for 2012, and where is the added payroll that he was talking about?

Falling 1 game short and trying to bring back the same squad is a bad strategy IMO. Add in the fact that we’ve moved two vets and added just a rookie.

There is a reason why we play 162 games and dont stop mid August. This is a solid team and a borderline playoff team which seems to be our building strategy these days. Everything has to fall into place next year for the Braves. Im still hopeful for an upgrade, that doesnt include the Seth Smiths/Ronny Cedenos of the world.

Moe, I’m glad to hear that it is going okay for you. Sounds like you are starting to get a hold of the job much better. It just takes time once you start something new.

Here’s the thing that turns me off of a Smith/Wheeler package … they’re both lefties. Especially with Wheeler since he’d be the future of us. Freeman/Mac/Heyward and if they were to sign Bourn long term then adding another lefty in Wheeler is LHH overkill. Is it not?

Salary Dump

December 19th, 2011
10:50 pm

Wren seems to have a problem with keeping his stories straight depending on what side of the bed he gets up on.

November 8th, Pastornicky isn’t ready yet.

December 2nd he says “We’re comfortable with him at shortstop at the major league level. We think he’ll grow and get better, and offensively he’s shown us that he can handle the bat over the last year and a half. I think he’s at least a 20-plus stolen base player at the major league level, and his numbers in the minor leagues were double that… Some of that would be predicated on where he bats in the order, as well.”

So without taking a bat off his shoulder in the off season, Pastornicky is suddenly big leagure ready when a month ago he was not?

I think Wren overestimated the market and the longer he waits the more likely it is that he makes a panic move with JJ or Prado and ends up with a dud deal that is going to look more like payroll relief than actual help for the team on the field.

He makes $3.8 this year in the last year of contract. I don’t know what it would take now that they sure’d up their rotation w/ CJ Wilson. They kind of have a logjam with position players. I don’t know if there is a prospect that would fit and maybe a decent bullpen arm.

If Matt Diaz is on the roster in 2012…wheww….expect more of the same!!! It would not surprise me to see a “Big announcement” from the Braves…..”we have signed Matt Diaz to a 5 year deal, for $500,000.00 (yes I know it is well below the league minimum, but his worth and value)..to be our starting left fielder. We feel he deserves this contract and deserves to be our starting left fielder after his outstanding 2011, while sitting on the bench for the Pittsburg Pirates and being such an integral part of our monumental collapse down the stretch…..1 of our many efforts to strengthen our roster……btw..he is a helluva club house guy”

I like Cody Ross for his flexibility to play all 3 OF slots. But if FW is making a play for a larger profile OF’er (Adam Jones type) then it would make perfect sense that he not pull the trigger on a FA signing before exhausting all the other options.

Izturis doesn’t knock your socks off but its an offensive upgrade from what we’ve had. UZR has him as a plus defender at SS. I know a whole season there may change that but you have to like the increase while giving Pastornicky time to mature. If something happens to Chipper then Izturis can slide to 3B w/ Pastornicky at SS if no one else is added to OF.

Why does Wren want to deal Prado for Seth Smith? I hope he has some very unpleasant things happen to him if he makes that deal. “Hey lets trade for a guy who, in a hitters park like Coors, hits .283 lifetime with 15 homers last year compared to Prado who is a lifetime .290 hitter, has more seasons with 100+ OPS+. Oh yeah and Prado is a year younger. We need more guys with age. Gotta get that average age up some.” That sounds very solid Frank. You need to step down because you are insanely stupid.

The Braves and Rockies have continued discussing a possible deal that would send Seth Smith to Atlanta for Martin Prado, according to MLB.com’s Thomas Harding. The Braves appear to be seeing what they can get for Jair Jurrjens first, however. Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports examined possible suitors for Smith earlier today, including the Braves despite their preference for a right-handed hitter.

I don’t see the upgrade here in moving Prado. Especially at this point in the offseason. I don’t think Smith away from Coors and Matt Diaz who is coming off a 0 HR year is going to make the offense better. If anything it puts another LH bat in the lineup.

Someone noted on Twitter while ago that Darvish’s $51.7 posting fee was higher than five MLB teams’ payrolls in 2011. And that’s just the posting fee. Rangers still have to sign him to a contract, which I’d guess will probably push the total cost to way more than $100 million, perhaps even the $125 million neighborhood. (They get the posting fee back if they can’t sign him.)

Dan Frazer, a character actor whose Hell’s Kitchen upbringing prepared him for a long run of roles as a blue-collar type or a cop, most notably as the beleaguered supervising officer Capt. Frank McNeil on “Kojak,” died on Friday at his home in Manhattan. He was 90.

Mr. Frazer was also in two of Woody Allen’s early comedies. In “Take the Money and Run” (1969), he played Mr. Allen’s thieving character’s psychiatrist. In “Bananas” (1971), he was a priest again, peddling New Testament cigarettes in a send-up of a TV commercial. “New Testament cigarettes — I smoke ’em,” Mr. Frazer’s priest says, exhaling smoke and sticking a thumb skyward. “He smokes ’em.” (NY Times)…
