Adam Jones trade is a great trade for the direction that Liberty Media and Frenk Wren and there direction they want to take the Braves in. They want younger, cheaper, mid level players. They want to avoid players going to free agency or arbitration. They want to sign cheap 1 yr veterans to help out the overly hyped talent waiting in the wings.
This formula is to reduce payroll to make bigger profitable wealth year after year. They can do this because of the Braves history of being so successful. Pretty much riding on the coat tails of the 14 divisional run.
DOB, I agree, the general bias here is to overvalue our players, undervalue those on other teams, and fail to understand that the “metrics” in any trade are going to be pretty much even. The surplus value is going to be based on each team’s needs positionally.
I have seen the O’s own press out more stock in their prospect shortstops, and they view Hardy as a “bridge,” albeit a darn good one. Jones and Prado I view as a straight up deal. We would need to put in another piece with JJ to equate to Hardy.
My confidence in my own ability to analyze these things is pretty darn low, but that’s my two cents.

Except that Jones is making 3.5 this year (which is a good deal for the team, admittedly), will have his third arbitration season next year, and will be a FA after that. He’s not a cheap, mid-level guy anymore.
And besides, he just might be the most overrated guy on the blog. A good player, but not performing at the superstar status that many here think he is.
If you can’t look at what he’s done so far, project his numbers outside of that stadium and the potential that he had coming into the majors as a prospect, well, then the guy isn’t much to you.
He’s ready to bust out BIG TIME once he gets out of San Diego.
Oh, I don’t think your theory is wrong; I just don’t think Adam Jones quite fits it! I wouldn’t mind having him on the club at all, just think the price in players/prospects will be more than he’s truly worth.
I guess it doesn’t matter what Wren does because regardless:

And whatever I say some will still call me “dummy” and “backstabber”
Did they check to see if Bonds used enhancing level performance drugs throughout the trail? Seems to me he got a light slap on the wrist, he must of been on something to get a verdict like that…. hmmmm….
Seattle–oh, I don’t think anyone disagrees with that sentiment, and if you ask me it’s an excellent way to run a ballclub. I’m not a huge fan of big FA signings; I think they often burden the club more than they help. I think selective FA signings are best.
What’s better than paying Tommy Hanson and Jason Heyward 400K to be awesome? Not much. Plus they free up more money to get a big FA if you really need it. People don’t think we have any big FA, but we do–we’re paying Chipper 14MM, Uggla 13MM, McCann 12MM and Hudson 10MM. Just because we didn’t make a big splash signing them doesn’t mean we don’t have ‘em…
Plus the Braves will have to re-sign Bourn (probably wont) and McCann. B-Mac has 1 or 2 years with a club option. Huddy will probably retire in 3 years???
Chipper is going to be good for 2/3 of the season. Keeping Prado makes logic then trading him.
The only way I see a trade happening is if the Braves get an absurd deal. I dont see that happening.

When I first got home tonight I was in a mood to ask for everyone on the blog’s Top 10 “blow off steam” songs. Although I’m much calmer now, it still seems like a good idea.
Got another one if you like swing from the thirties and forties. PAROV STELAR, Austrian-born, has been fusing swing with jazz and funk. Try CAT GROOVE for starters if you like the idea.
If you want to blow off steam, get mellow with the weed-head group NIGHTMARES on WAX. Steady tokers, man. Try that 195 Lbs for starters, and check out the disc cover. Seriously bummed man, like ‘Up in Smoke’ CHEECH and CHONG stuff.
I think 2 cheap years of a 25 yr old All-Star starting pitcher with a career ERA of 3.40 is worth at least a career .264/.320/.435 SS. I think 3 yrs of Hardy’s career .756 OPS is close to equal of 2 years of JJ.
The thought was O’s need pitching are not going to compete in the next 2-3 yrs while Hatdy is there. O’s need JJ more than a SS no matter how good.
I think 2 cheap years of a 25 yr old All-Star starting pitcher with a career ERA of 3.40 is worth at least a career .264/.320/.435 SS. I think 3 yrs of Hardy’s career .756 OPS is close to equal of 2 years of JJ.
well yeah if he had been healthy all season, no doubt. Gonna be a little hard to find a GM who is gonna trade a quality player for a pitcher who has spent the last third of the last two seasons on the DL, and has done nothing but throw 5 innings with a brace since then
Not a good way to keep your job if you give up a lot for said pitcher and he does the same thing again.
Nolie… I believe this is the type of gamble the new O’s GM should take. Hardy and his .756 OPS is not going to help the O’s compete in the next 2-3 years. Take a buy low gamble on JJ. If he really is a solid number 2, he should prove it next season and then they could try and buy out some free agent years with a team friendly contract.
JJ might not be the right starting pitcher to take on this gamble with Borass as his agent. But the O’s GM should be looking to sell high on Hardy, buy low on a starting pitcher with years before FA or who they can keep/extend till they can compete.
Just an opinion… no issues if Hardy stays in Baltimore and Pastornicky opens as SS with Braves.
I have a 7 yr old daughter, so only songs I get are Justin Bieber and commercials. But I do get revenge … I keep singing Rocket Man from some car commercial, and the whole family hates me right now.
I’m a rocket man….. burning out his fuse up here alone….

DOB,
I think 2 cheap years of a 25 yr old All-Star starting pitcher with a career ERA of 3.40 is worth at least a career .264/.320/.435 SS. I think 3 yrs of Hardy’s career .756 OPS is close to equal of 2 years of JJ.
The thought was O’s need pitching are not going to compete in the next 2-3 yrs while Hatdy is there. O’s need JJ more than a SS no matter how good.

MANNY MACHADO is in the wings, their top prospect and SS of the future. 2013 should see him close to ML ready.

well yeah if he had been healthy all season, no doubt.

How the H… did Asdrubal hit 25 homeruns last season. His 25 HRs last year is like 40% more than his first 4 seasons (18) combined.
Hardy OPS .756
TULO OPS .869

MIBravesFan,
I have a 7 yr old daughter, so only songs I get are Justin Bieber and commercials. But I do get revenge … I keep singing Rocket Man from some car commercial, and the whole family hates me right now.
I’m a rocket man….. burning out his fuse up here alone….
