Ugh, don’t buy the store brand coffee, too much bite. I don’t understand the love affair for Prado, he is not a left fielder nor an everyday third baseman. I can see trading him for value, however don’t give him away. Needs are obvious, a left fielder that can be depended upon and Heyward to come around (last chance). It has been a dozen years or more since the team had a really decent outfield. They have too many pitchers for the spots available, so be prudent and move once again for value. Say no to Reyes, would you want to go to war with him? A decent upgrade at catching defense is not too much to ask for, McCann is lazy back there and needs to pick it up, make him work for a contract extension. SS is a really important position, and I don’t know if their rookies are ready yet, however there is not very much available out there. The manager needs to grow or go, he needs to be on a short leash also, however I don’t think he is championship material. Frank and Fredi have a lot riding on 2012. At the end of 2012 they both will have one year left on their current contracts and neither makes enough money not to be canned at seasons end.
So if they are sold over the next 14mos they had better hope the team makes the 2012 playoffs versus coming in 3rd or worse and missing them entirely.

Chipper is still a productive player even as a 39 yr old guy last yr. Look at the numbers. He has earned his $$$$ & at an older age, he is a better defensive third baseman then he was in his prime years.
Chipper is not the problem. He has not stolen a dime. The only guys who really did not earn their $$$ were Nate Mc Louzy and Kenshin Kawacomic who will be gone gone gone Thank God.
And I know what Lowe made & his run here was not as bad as some made it out to be.
I hope the Dawgs get that RB out of North Carolina (I think his name is Matthews). He has to be tougher mentally and more mature than that disgraceful bum Crowell who needs to play in Division Two, the little girl.
Hey DOB….Martin Prado, even with his injury, had over 100 MORE at bats than Chipper in 2011. Chipper “played” in 126 games yes but a lot were pinch hit at bats only
In my (correct) opinion, if you don’t enjoy seeing Chipper still at the plate in any situation and have a smile on your face when you think about him starting and ending his career in a Braves uniform then you aren’t a Braves fan and need to go root for a team that tries to buy every free agent and doesn’t have any loyalty from their players. Chipper is the man!!!
When talking about chipper all you need to know is what he does in the off season. He hunts!!! I love chipper but the reason he gets hurt is he comes in out of shape. He does not work hart enough in the off season. I hope he proves me wrong and comes in in great shape. We made our big move during the season getting bourn. We need heyward to come back strong and ugla to go from the start and mac to the finish. We will have one of the top pitching staffs in all of baseball. If we can get a big bat for left it would be huge.
Not any player, just Chipper, Aaron, Murphy, etc. And in regards to hunting in the off season I’ve done a lot of hunting in my day and it’s actually a great way to stay in shape.
Just give me 16 more views for 10,000 total and I will leave you alone forever more here at the AJC! Thanks to all who have viewed it. This kid really wants to go to Georgia Tech. His dad is an Internal Medicine doctor. So he can afford to walk on for a couple of years. The problem is, he needs a little help from football to be accepted at Tech (to get into school there). Decent grades but only has a 26 on his ACT. High school teammate of Georgia Tech OG Shaq Mason. Video already sent to Tech coaches but hard to get it in the hands of the right guy. Any help form Tech boosters will be rewarded with 3-4 years of 90% made field goals from inside 50 yards. Watch for your self and thanks again!
I love all of this talk about Jose Constanza in LF. While Constanza is a fine bench player, he wil never do as a regular. Him in the lineup everyday makes Atlanta a punching Judy offense. We need power.
No way Wren will trade Prado(A good player with a 4.5 mil possible arbitration guy) for a platoon player. When Chipper goes down, and you know he will early and often, Prado will be very valuable to the Braves.
I don’t trade JJ either. Best starter in the majors last year up until injuries after all-star break. Plus he is a super nice guy. He took time to talk to my son at church a couple weeks ago. We need good players, even better when they are good guys!
Here’s an idea Wren…. If we have to trade a pitcher, let’s make sure we get an outfielder with power, just like, say, Javier Vazquez for Melky Cabrera.
Yea, lets trade a proven starting pitcher or Prado for a basis utility guy. That’s the way to move good players instead of signing them ourselves. This is bull. Chipper should take his old body home and move over so Prado can be everyday 3rd base. The sign a left fielder and keep our own dam pitchers. I mean come on. Im sick of trading away players for nothing but platoon players.
Pastornicky’s 25 errors and .942 fielding percentage are worrisome. With a slowed down Chipper Jones and Uggla in the infield, a GOOD shortstop with range and arm, is urgently needed. Seth Smith is a below average outfielder, doesn’t get good jumps on balls, doesn’t take good routes, has a below average arm.He struggles a LOT against LH pitching and, for playing in Denver, did not show a huge amount of power. Chipper, Uggla, ??? at shortstop, Smith in LF, doesn’t sound encouraging from a defensive point of view. Unless the Rockies throw in one of their top two outfield prospects, Wheeler or Blackmon, this would not be a good deal.
rainman34,,,Chipper owns a horse and cattle range. If you never work on a range then give it a try. Alot of hard work that will keep you in shape.
One question. How do you know what Chipper does in off season beside hunt reserve. Chipper is HOF’er give it a break.
For the folks who think Chipper is stealing Braves money: first Chipper re-negotiated his contract to make it more back loaded so that the Braves could sign players like Gary Sheffield — you remember him, right?
Also, take a look at Chipper’s WAR. Folks, the man puts up well above average WAR numbers even from last season. In arbitration, a utility player like Martin Prado would command about $5.5 million per season! The Braves simply could not find another third baseman with Chipper’s WAR (or better) for the money they are currently paying Chipper!
Even if you completely remove the fact that he took hometown discounts in the prime of his career to give the Braves the best chance to put a winning team on the field, the man is earning his money! But, when you realize why his contract is the way it is, then it seems particularly ungrateful for some fans to imply he’s stealing the Braves’ money!
hanley aint gonna play under gonzalez again. wont happen.
as for smith. its just stupid. same crap in the outfield. platoon platoon and never go and get someone…and to even think about heyward in right makes my stomach hurt…still no short stop and you dont win a world series with rookies…
I like Red Sox SS Jed Lowerie and OF Josh Reddick (born in Suwanee, went to Middle Ga) for Braves Jurrjens, or The Yankees deal Swisher and Eduardo Nunez for Jurrjens, possibly 2 prospects. The Red Sox and Yankees both want a solid starter and both are very familiar with Scott Boras. Rockies may deal Smith and Blackman for Jurrjens and prospect.
Reyes at 110 million is almost as stupid as the contract Werth got from the Nationals. Salaries are out of site! You’d think the GMs would have a little more sense.
Reyes deal is great for the Braves though. Ties up a lot of Marlin $$$. Now maybe another East team will handicap themselves for years with another stupid deal.
The Miami Marlins are likely to move Hanley Ramirez to third base. However, by signing Reyes the Marlins are also letting it be known that they are going after Albert Pujols. The Marlins are changing everything: new stadium, new uniforms, naming themselves after the city of Miami now vice the state of Florida.
But most important of all for the Braves, they are showing that middle-of-the-pack payroll isn’t going to get it done in the NL East any longer. Whether Reyes works out stands to be seen, but if they sign Pujols they’ve got a llineup to match the Phillies if not exceed it!
The Braves simply have to get a significant bat in left field to have a reasonable chance to earn post season in 2012.
Better coffee this morning. Bill, if the dogs have the ball, the other cannot score. Bobo went too conservative and went three and out too much, Murray put the ball on the ground, and momentum snowballed from there.. It is tough on a D when the other team has the ball to begin a drive deep (special teams also) in your territory. Just saying.
The Braves may very well get 90 wins next season, however that means absolutely nothing if you don’t make the playoffs and come in 3rd place in your division. The Braves have a huge mountain to climb and I don’t see them doing it. I hope I am wrong, but they have proven that time after time.
The Braves Management, all of the writers, and almost 100% of the fans are ignoring it, but there is an ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM. Ignore it all you want, pretent it doesn’t exist, or whatever — But the MOST SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM for the Braves is that they will not be able to win as long as they continue with a situation were almost all of their Starting Pitchers are becomming INJURED. Right now, three young already established Starters who should have been the core of a great rotation for years to come (JJ, Hanson, and Medlin) are all injured. This will probably NOT be a TEMPORARY PROBLEM — they may never really be great again. — This is not a one year problem – the injuries to these three pitcherss may adversly effect the Braves FOR SEVERAL YEARS. And this is just the tip of the iceberg — In the 6 or 7 years since Leo left as the Pitching Coach, how many total Starting Pitchers (counting only those who were in the rotation for a reasonable time) have the Braves had — and HOW MANY of these have NOT BEEN INJURED. Ignore this all you want, but there is no way to develop a winning team in this kind of situation.
The Mets won’t suffer from the loss of Reyes, K-Rod, Beltran, et al. The opportunity for new blood to prosper will energize them. The same will happen to the Braves when they, unload some aging players, which I hope they do as soon as conditions permit! I’m wondering if Wright could be a partial solution, with Jones the veteran presence, the super utility guy and the switch hitting power off the bench!! The question, of course, is whether the Mets will continue to clean house and unload salary.
Don:
true. But Medlin is not injured. He played great ball at the end of last year.
JJ is not expected to be in our rotation unless we cant trade him.
and Hanson has been hurt yes. But we were fine without him.
Hudson currently had surgery but is expected to be fine.
Our rotation is deep.
Im more concerned with the fact that we dont have any consistent hitters on this team.
and we still have shown no pursuit of a short stop or outfielder.
hope these winter meetings give us something.
im concerned.
dont trade prado hes a core member of this team hes clutch he can play anywhere and as far as jurjens dont trade him either we dont know the status of hanson’s shoulder and hanson and jj’s agent is saten aka scott boras who i hate. I also think we need to keep aroldys viszacanio in the bullpen hes going to be a big timer. gotta love baseball chatter in december.
GO BRAVES btw jose reyes going to the marlins hes going to injury himself the first day of spring training
Why do the Braves insist on platoonig in LF? Keep Prado and let him take over third when Chipper retires. Lets go get an overrated LF who has inflated Coors Field numbers? Diaz has less power than Prado and the reason we want to get rid of Prado is because we need more power in LF? Wren looks like he wants to make deals for the sake of making deals.
Don,
Pitchers got injured during Leo’s tenure too.
Steve Avery’s career was shortened by injury. Smoltz had more than one surgery.
Pedro Borbon Jr — injury
Odalis Perez — injured
Mike Stanton — injury
Juan Berrenguer — injury
Mark Wohlers — injury after suffering Steve Blass disease
Glavine and Maddux were unusually healthy, but their style of pitching put limited strain on their arms.
Pitchers with a lot of innings before the age of 26 stand a higher chance of injury.
Bill, I was raised on a dairy farm so i know all about it. Key word there is he owns one. He says himself he uses st to get in shape. How do I know. I watch 190 braves games a year(including st).Again I love chipper but he has made his money and has nothing to prove. He still loves the game just not enough to kill his self in the gym in the off season. Him being a hof does nothing for the 2012 Braves team so all can give that a break. If he comes in at 225 in great shape I will gladly eat my words.
Fredi and Hanley need to put aside their differences. Hanley could get us there, given he produces. Having a 1-2 punch like Bourn and Ramirez would definitely set the tables for the likes of : Chipper, Uggla, Freeman, Mac and yes even Heyward. Obviously, the Marlins are looking for a big impact. Package JJ, Prado, and even Pastornicky if it requires it to get a deal done. Hanley has at least three years on his contract left, and would truly make a difference in this offense. Hanley is owed about 11.5 and the money we would save on not having to pay JJ and Prado, would almost cover itself.
Prado is an All-Star 2nd baseman. He had an offseason (still decent) due to position change and illness.
Sure Uggs had a very productive end of season and fits the club mentality, but we shouldn’t have brought in a guy on a big contract to replace an existing stud at 2nd. We should of kept Infante and used the money elsewhere (like meeting arbitration demands for Gonzo and Bourne).
Wren is hit or miss too much for me and shouldn’t feel so obligated to make trades/deals/moves!
I had read somewhere/sometime in the recent past that Hanley did NOT want to move to third base and would likely revert into classic Hanley-mode if asked to do so (or move to center field) to accommodate Reyes. Now that the Fish have pulled the trigger on the Reyes signing, I wonder if they wouldn’t be listening to trade offers for Hanley for, say, a pitching prospect and/or Prado. Not sure if the Braves would be interested for any number of legitimate reasons (e.g. past conflict with Fredi, ability/interest to retain long term), but he sure would fill a couple of glaring needs for the Braves (right handed power bat, shortstop) right now.
Unless, the Braves get serious about improving the offense, they will finish the 2012 season third, at best, in the NL East. At present, the Braves are not as good as the Phillies or Marlins.
I understand that it’s unusual for a Boras client to agree to an extension without testing the FA market, but the Braves had that happen with Andruw when he signed his first big deal. Do you think there’s any chance JJ might go along with such a plan as well?
I wish there was more positive news on the Braves trade front. We NEED to make a trade because at this point the Braves are worse than they were at the end of the year
Third Team to add would be Tampa Bay. Braves get BJ Upton, Bluejays get Martin Prado, Tampa Rays get 2 prospects from each team and take on some of the salary for Upton.
Also we work something out for Shone Figgins from seattle.
Line up
1. Bourne
2. Figgins
3. Upton
4. McCann
5. Uggla
6. Freeman
7. Pastornicky
8. Heyward
9. Pithcer
Or imagine Figgins playing SS and keeping Jones in the lineup
I like both of these potential lineups and both could produce enough to win. Speed at the top, first 3 guys of stealing 30 plus a year and two could go 40 or 50 plus. Then you got the meat in McCann, Uggla, Freeman, Heyward, and Jones. I dont see this line up losing many games. In fact it will take this type of a line up to win the East. Phillies are not just going to let Rollins leave without finding a suitable replacement. They will probably get Araris remariz for third and Carlos Lee from Houston to boolseter the line up AGAIN.
Braves have to step it up, even more so if the the Marlins get Prince or Pujols. Which I see them landing 1 of the 2 and also acquirring CJ Wilson from Texas. This team is building (Buying) a WS calibur team. Braves need to step up and spend a little more, or else they will not keep up. Money talks at BS walks.
at the end we will see the same thing Frank Wren said the same excuses “could not, was attempted but no …” the same summer, to sign a ss profitable when they have a young boy .. we’re screwed, with some owners who do not want to spend and that’s how schuerholtz john said that he will not spend the same this year, we spend the same if they do not correct signatures. a sign Jimmy Rollins ss, if you want a power outfielder Josh willigham, and sent to Oakland gio for hanson , because with the rotation we have not won one. and more now that the Marlins are behind pujols buerhle and if able to sign, we’re in trouble if you do not make the right moves.
I dont agree with the whole platoon diaz in LF with Seth Smith? That to me seems like we are trying to make excuses of why we suck, and the season hasnt even started. Braves really need to take a look at what monsters will be facing. Washington, if they land Wilson or Burhele also BJ Upton. they jump ahead of the Braves. Marlins, if they get Burhele or Wilson and Pujols they jump ahead of Philly perhaps? Phillies, if they land Rameriz, Lee, and Gio. Then we might want to ask to play against the Mets all year, because we went from 2nd in the East to 4th. This is whats happening, its not nade up. Best we have heard from rumors are JJ and Prado for lesser quality players or possibly future good players. When are the Braves going to pony up and go out and grab that top Free Agent or a Top 10 player? I know with Liberty Media pulling the strings, were not. We neeeeeeed a new owner willing to spend, then maintain. I just dont see us being good at all next year.
I know that if everyone gave Heyward a chance he could raise his average to .235 and hit 16 homeruns and drive in 70 while only striking out 200 times……..that’s good numbers for a full season in the minors!

Not M. Prado for S. Smith plus prospects Frank — please!
The Braves don’t need another here one day and gone the next day platoon type player.
Prado’s an invaluable and versatile regular, who will have a bounce back year — after having been injured last year.
For a change Frank, please keep the players the Braves have developed.
Here’s a link to key article on the kind of team the Braves could presently have if NO TRADES had been made:

The question, of course, is whether the Mets will continue to clean house and unload salary.

true. But Medlin is not injured. He played great ball at the end of last year.
JJ is not expected to be in our rotation unless we cant trade him.
and Hanson has been hurt yes. But we were fine without him.
Hudson currently had surgery but is expected to be fine.
Our rotation is deep.

Don,
Pitchers got injured during Leo’s tenure too.

1. Bourne
2. Figgins
3. Upton
4. McCann
5. Uggla
6. Freeman
7. Chipper
8. Heyward
9. Pitcher
