you might be right about JJ, but I’m not sure that’s how the club sees it. I do know that most GMs are likely to view him with skepticism as Cashman said last week
Probably not–they’re the pros, and I’m just some idiot on a blog. But that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. I’d love to have him prove me wrong (as long as he stays with us).
Steve from OH – I heard that Jurjens knee injury was to his right knee and thus was impeding him from pushing of the mound. I’m thinking that could be the 2 or 3 mph he seems to have lost. There seems to be no exact diagnosis for the type of injury he has but I was wondering if you had any info on it?
The knee injury? No. Haven’t been following the Braves or baseball much at all in the past year or so. It sounds plausible, though. Either way, his injury history, drop in velo, and lack of a good third pitch concern me a lot. Like I said, if we can get a good package for him, we should really consider doing it. I think we have the pitching depth to overcome losing him.

cabravesfan………Joe Montana had recovered from the elbow injury. Was the MVP in 1990….came back from the injury and played the last game of the 1992 regular season and put up some good numbers.
Many 49ers fans were pissed when Seifert (Walsh was the GM then) didnt replace a struggling Steve Young in the 1992 NFC Championship game against Cowboys. Montana was it itching to go in. Yet Young played the whole game.
Montana ended up having two pretty good seasons with the Chiefs, leading them to AFC Championship game in 1993.
Chipper Jones won the batting title a couple of years ago….got hurt in 2010…..he’s old just like Montana was. How do you think many Braves fans would have reacted if Wren traded Chipper like Walsh did Montana?
I never said that Montana, Rice, Lott and Craig were let go in their prime. I’m saying that all 4 were fan favorites…and had several decent years left in the them. Walsh planned their departure by making sure that he had replacements BEFORE they become washed up.
What have the Braves done to find a replacement for Chipper? NOTHING! The Braves are keeping Chipper around because many so-called Braves fans are more of a fan of Chipper…than they are of the Braves team. Chipper Jones is a shell of his former self. Below average defense….average, at best, hitting in the #3 slot of the order. Yet Braves management keeps hoping that the Chipper old will reappear.

The ‘99 team also lost Javier Lopez to injury, also Odalis Perez. Smoltz won 17 games with an elbow injury by pitching sidearm and learning a knuckleball.

Not at all sure Prado is an upgrade at 2B for the Pirates, and he would be more expensive than Walker. But Prado looks like a good fit at 3B for them. JJ’s salary, compared to one of our young arms, is not what they would prefer.
Is Prado desirable to Pittsburgh for 3B or do they have other plans for that position? Would they want JJ if we paid some of his salary for a couple of years? That would be a small sum compared to what a free agent in left field could cost us over the four years of control we would have for McCutch.
So what about Prado, JJ (with compensation) and Hoover for McCutch?
I would keep JJ and give one of our top young arms if we had to.
Just read DOB’s link to the poorly edited article on the UGA/LSU game. Made me think of a story about a young Shelby Foote. When he was starting out, he was a copy editor at a Mississippi newspaper. He was known for letting humorous typos slip through. One day there was a very ominous weather forecast–the weather person had said that they anticipated ’shifty winds’ but the newspaper published something far more sinister.
Valentine reached out to David Cone about becoming the new Red Sox pitching coach, reports Jack Curry of the YES Network (Twitter link). Cone isn’t expected to take the job but was “flattered.”
Assuming Pittsburgh was thinking about it, would Prado, a top level pitcher (JJ +cash or Tehran or Vizcaino), and Hoover be a fair price? That was really my question. Unless they have a minor leaguer or have acquired someone I don’t know about, 3B is a position where Prado could really thrive.
Honestly, I don’t think that would be enough. McCutchen is one of the elite young stars in the league and is under team control until 2016. I think it would take something like Teheran AND Vizcaino AND another top position prospect, along with Prado. They would ask for a ransom and probably get it.
Moe, you had me going for a minute. For some reason when I read your post I thought it was about David Wright, not David Cone. It made absolutely no sense. But as usual, it was me. LOL
The Pirates have Pedro Alvarez, the # 1 pick in the 2009 draft to play 3B. They would be unlikely to trade McCutcheon for players like JJ and Prado who have fewer years of team control. They have also drafted two of the top pitching prospects in the last 2 drafts. A McCutcheon for Teheran trade + throwins makes some sense, but the Pirates need the bat and speed more than another arm.

I must plead my ignorance. Is that the watered down crap that they sell in the grocery stores in Oklahoma? Why does that exist? My as well drink O’Doul’s.
yeah moe I went from south louisiana to oklahoma in college and was impressed by the folks ability to drink beer…then I started drinking it and switched to hard liquour to get a buzz
3.2 used to be a big thing in states where you had to be 21 to drink full strength booze. When I was an undergrad in Ohio, you could buy 3.2 in pitchers in the bars if you were 18. many states have changed their drinking laws since those days, not sure how much of it is around nowdays or where
This may sound weird to you, but I sometimes wonder if home-field is good for them all the way through. They haven’t lost a road-game in a long time. Maybe, playing on the “frozen tundra” will hurt their offense.
I’m still, obviously, rooting for them to remain undefeated, but I still wonder if that’s a good thing.
tiger/nolie–Yeah, I heard about it, when I moved there. Just seemed too surreal. I am tired of such different laws around alcohol everywhere I go. Chicago was the easiest–buy whenever you want/wherever you want. Apparently in NJ, grocery stores do not sell alcohol. Means an extra store to hit, when marketing. In Chicago, all liquor, wine or beer was available at the grocery store. Quite easy.
It’s so odd to me to think there are places where you can’t buy alcohol on Sundays. We can get hard alcohol at the Rite Aid down the street…3 isles over from the pharmacy…any day of the week. (not that we generally buy from there. But we could)
moe – yeah I’m with you on the alcohol laws its just crazy…when I was younger it was an issue (cause I never knew how much beer I could afford for sunday at the river until I was done with my weekend roaming on saturday night and in LA couldn’t buy alcohol until noon on sunday) Now I have enough in the cabinet that it doesn’t bother me at all
I had an AWD (Air Worthiness Directive) on my Piper once that made them take the wings off to inspect the spar that supported them. supported them. Not a cheap annual.
Dallas. So they are 7-1 in conference, which I believe would be the first tie breaker since they are in different divisions…but it might be common opponents, but there have to be 4 and I am not sure they have that many…)
kl – yeah I normally save double the annual to cover what they might find and if they don’t I pick something else to upgrade…2 years ago I got a GPS last year I got a handheld radio…this year I will get a new headliner
My past mechanic was very unreliable so I’m switching to someone new this year so I doubt I get the headliner.
nolie – in most states purchase was illegal but possesion was not (or something like that) so we would buy it in louisiana and bring it to panama city beach for spring break…plus it was much cheaper at albertson’s
We buy most of our beer and wine at the grocery store. VJ gets other stuff at Total Wine (they have an amazing selection of hard alcohol). I once had someone at Target tell me I couldn’t pay for my wine at the pharmacy counter, so I paid for everything else there, went 4 feet to the regular counter, and bought my wine. Seemed so pointless, but I guess you have to at least pretend you are not selling prescription drugs and alcohol to the same person
tiger–Yes, now I tend to be a bit better stocked than when younger. In Chicago, I perennially had house guests and was always running out of booze–was very appreciative of lax laws so I could restock.
Ooof. My mundoo is being chewed to go eat. Back in a bit.
kl – yeah I watch out for AD’s to try and keep from being surprised. They say once you have had the plane for a few years as long as you keep flying it regularly you will identify most of the squawks b4 the mechanic does. But the first annual with a new mechanic can be an interesting dance.
T. O’Hawke, that Packers/Chiefs game could get ugly. Then again, if the Chiefs would have had anybody that qualified to be a high school QB on the field last Sunday, they would have won against the Steelers. Chiefs defense plays pretty solid at home. But I’m afraid Mr. Rodgers and his friends are gonna wipe the turf at Arrowhead with some Chiefs players.
if you visit often enough that I need restocking and you aren’t bringing a bottle with you soon you will find your favorite out of stock every time you visit…
Speaking of music, I’ve lined up a blog interview with an accomplished rockin’ guitarist/songwriter with whom many of you are quite familiar, a guy who’s also a hardcore Braves fan from Alabama — none other than Jason Isbell. Said he’d love to do an interview for the ol’ blog. He’s touring but we’ll probably do it Saturday while he’s traveling between shows in St. Louis and Kansas City.

I must plead my ignorance. Is that the watered down crap that they sell in the grocery stores in Oklahoma? Why does that exist? My as well drink O’Doul’s.
