What about 3 years from now when Reyes, oft injured and steadily in decline, is half the player he is today and has another 3 years on his contract at $15mil + per year?
December 1st, 20115:43 pm
Then there was the Jermaine Dye for Michael Tucker trade… leave it to Schuerholz…. sheesh!
December 1st, 20115:45 pm
In 2007 Reyes played in 160 games… and that number has been going down down down ever since (not even counting ‘09 when he played in 30 something games).
If the trend continues then he’ll be good for about 100 games a year by the midpoint of his new contract. He’s got the health problems of Chipper but is 10 years younger and with 75% less power.
December 1st, 20115:47 pm
Wren is Einstein compared to some of the crap JS pulled. JS had 4 thoroughbreds Madduz, Glavine Smoltz, and Andruw/Chipper,and he rode them till the saddle wore out!
December 1st, 20115:51 pm
Giants in discussion with Alex Gonzalez.
December 1st, 20115:53 pm
Still cant believe JS traded Andy Marte. Terrible move. We could still have him to be Chippers replacement!
December 1st, 20115:58 pm
Giants probably gonna sign Alex Gonzalez. Wouldn’t that be something.
McFann O O o
December 1st, 20116:01 pm
Oh! OK, thanks…
WMT2007MLLT1927Y 1. McCann to the Red Sox or the Yankees for a plethora of highly rated prospects.…2. Jose Reyes signs with the Braves as a free agent.
If that happens, I may have to find a new team…
December 1st, 20116:02 pm
Giants talks have gone from Reyes to Gonzalez. Reyes is a 6WAR player, Gonzo is a 1.
December 1st, 20116:10 pm
I think McSoxx would be a good name. IMHO
Sign him yesterday. The only issue is when do you move him to first base. Can Freeman play third or take an outfield spot?
December 1st, 20116:12 pm
N8, I think you need to become more familiar with the definition of “strawman”. What I said might not have been to everything you said, but it was definitely referring to part of what you said
and besides, only your ego would have made you assume that your post was all I was commenting on.
I’m glad I am so humble and not like that
December 1st, 20116:13 pm
I was gone all day, Have we signed Pooholes yet?
December 1st, 20116:14 pm
And a previous blogger just had to go and mention the terrible decision to trade Jermaine Dye—that put me right back into the same melancholy state I’ve had since Sept.
December 1st, 20116:16 pm
I’m waiting for the next 20 paragraph missive from N8…
December 1st, 20116:17 pm
nolie , he’s signed they’re just waiting for one thing before they announce it
hell to freeze
December 1st, 20116:19 pm
It has been a lot of years since we first heard about hell, maybe the climate has changed.
December 1st, 20116:20 pm
Dye had two poor years right after we traded him and then three good ones and then he would have been gone anyway. worse deals have taken place any number of times
December 1st, 20116:23 pm
I don’t know CB. several good friends are down there saving me a spot and they said to bring a fan and plenty of ice water….
December 1st, 20116:25 pm
Brewers, Cardinals, and Giants in talks with Alex.
December 1st, 20116:28 pm
I can’t see anything good about Agon signing with anyone else. Even a two year contract would be OK as you can see how easy it would be to move him next year if we needed to.
Why wait until 2013? — move Freeman to SS, McCann to 1B, and let Ross be the catcher until Bethancourt is ready. Solves all the problems — no need to sign or trade for a SS — keep Prado in LF and let Hinske fill in in CF when Bourn needs a day off (or if LH pitcher is oing for the opposition, then Diaz can play center to give Bourn a break). No need to make any trades — who needs to worry about Defense just score more runs than the other team.
December 1st, 20116:31 pm
IIRC they still have until the 12th to change their mind and offer a contract, if someone doesn’t sign him first
December 1st, 20116:32 pm
Dave O’Brien has the worst blog among the reporters covering baseball teams. I am always seeing other people that have scoop about the Braves before he does. I mean isn’t he supposed to be the closest beat writer to the Braves. Why do I consistently see other outlets get breaking Braves news before he does? Here are some examples: the Javier Vasquez trade a few years ago and the Derek Lowe signing by Cleveland. This guy is never the first to report Braves trades. I don’t understand it. Maybe he should be working the phones like a Chris Mortensen instead of reporting on music lyrics.
December 1st, 20116:35 pm
another idiot heard from…….
December 1st, 20116:36 pm
Cleveland didn’t sign Lowe. The Braves traded him. And if you don’t like DOB’s blog, there are plenty of other places you can spend time.
December 1st, 20116:38 pm
Hello blog peeps, how’s you all doing?
Wait, did someone just mention moving Freeman to SS??
December 1st, 20116:39 pm
among many other out of the box ideas. pretty funny post
Amazing video of a high school senior from Columbia TN who kicks the ball dead straight 75-80 yards in the air. He was successful on 54 of 54 attempts this season….100%. Now he needs a college team.
Watch for yourself…it is unreal!
December 1st, 20116:40 pm
Hi Chris, howya doing?
December 1st, 20116:41 pm
Yeah, but it was only because McCann is already in CF.
Steve from OH
December 1st, 20116:42 pm
Sounds about right. We all gave Alex a lot of grief (and rightfully so), but he’s actually one of the better options available in my mind. He at least offers a good glove and an occasional homer. Wouldn’t do more than a 1-year deal for him, though.
I mean, he does kinda suck, but so do most SS these days it seems.
December 1st, 20116:43 pm
Pierre – why not go to those quicker places then? I mean, clearly you’re just wasting your time here. Precious time that you could be using complaining on the internet.
December 1st, 20116:44 pm
Man, I guess some people only see what they want to see
ok now we got another conversation going between two avatars of the same idiot
Got it. So Freeman to SS, Bmac to CF, Ross in LF, bring back Chino and let him catch.
December 1st, 20116:45 pm
“I’m waiting for the next 20 paragraph missive from N8…”
Keep waiting. It’s not worth it.
December 1st, 20116:47 pm
and a name stealer too
Yeah, Hinkse in RF also
things are pickin’ up
December 1st, 20116:49 pm
“….and besides, only your ego would have made you assume that your post was all I was commenting on.”
If you’re into humor on the ole’ blog, you might as well pack your bags and move along. Not going to get any funnier than that. Nolie commenting on somebody else’s ego? Too funny. How did Seinfeld put it?
Leave on a high note?
Might as well. Nothing funnier will ever be posted. Thanks nolie. Welcome back.
December 1st, 20116:50 pm
We could put Chipper at catcher, he is already old and bent over.
December 1st, 20116:51 pm
yup, I thought it was pretty damn funny when I posted it N8, or whoever you is…
December 1st, 20116:52 pm
Doing good nolie, been hella busy.
I’m so so glad to see you’re doing better, had been thinking about ya.
Freeman can’t play SS… he plays 1B to hide a glaring flaw in his game:
Freeman throws like a girl. It’s true, he’s all elbow and even gives a girly “uhhhh… nuuuh” when he throws. I was amazed as I watched him during pregame warmups this last season. Every time he threw the ball he’d look around to see if anyone saw it and then run as fast as he could (also like a girl) back to 1B.
December 1st, 20116:53 pm
Murph, you should know by now that there are no flaws with any of our Braves players.
December 1st, 20116:54 pm
yup , Free throws like a girl and runs like a crippled sloth. sign Pooholes now!
December 1st, 20116:55 pm
Great column and thank you DOB! Lots of food for thought. I have a bias against “giant” contracts. McCann is a good bet to be highly productive for at least a few more years, but I would be careful about the length of the contract. Fiske, Bench, Pudge are rareties in terms of the number of years they performed well behind the plate. More common is Javy Lopez career.
We made the September 2007 Mets look like the 1927 Yankees
December 1st, 20116:57 pm
Bill Walsh (architect of 5 Super Bowl Championships with the San Francisco 49ers) famously said that “it’s better to trade a player a year too early…than a year too late”.
Bobby Cox, John Schuerholtz, Frank Wren, Fredo Gonzalez (a combined 1 World Series Championship)….feel that a team should hold onto aging stars who are way past their prime…to placate Braves fans who are more attached to their favorite players…than they are to seeing the Braves win.
Bill Walsh traded Joe Montana (who still had a couple of good years left with Kansas City)…..and released Ronnie Lott, Jerry Rice and Roger Craig while they still had a couple of productive years left (Rice helped the Raiders make the Super Bowl in 2002).
It takes BALLS to make the moves that Walsh did…even though many 49ears fans voiced their opposition against seeing their favorite players go to other teams.
Trading Brian McCann this offseason…would reap the Braves HUGE dividends. With 2 years left (option year will be picked up) on his contract…he’d be perfect for the American League…where he can DH on days he doesnt catch.
Again, take away his pinch hitting appearances, McCann will not start at least 30-35 games a season (barring injury). He’s our cleanup hitter. Imagine if Pujols, A-Rod or any of the potent cleanup hitters on other teams had to sit their stars that many games?
Like it or not, trading McCann now is in the Braves best interest.
I am pretty anxious for the winter meetings to begin
December 1st, 20116:58 pm
Every time he threw the ball he’d look around to see if anyone saw it and then run as fast as he could (also like a girl) back to 1B.
I never saw a girl hit a baseball 450 feet though.
It never ceases top amaze me how many people who can’t stand the blog, DOB or the Braves, spend so much of their free time here telling us how much they don’t like it.
December 1st, 20117:01 pm
No Braves played.
No games scheduled.
Late game tonight.
Fiske, Bench, Pudge are rareties in terms of the number of years they performed well behind the plate. More common is Javy Lopez career.
Braves54 – I started to use Javy as a comparible catcher to McCann as far as getting into shape goes, but then I thought about how I wasn’t sure that Javy was living better through Chemistry.
December 1st, 20117:02 pm
Hope you are well and the weather is not confining.
December 1st, 20117:04 pm
I bet Rosie O’Donell could do it
December 1st, 20117:06 pm
she can likely run faster than Free too
December 1st, 20117:07 pm
Maybe Janet Reno
RE: ROSIE O’DONNEL’s character:
If loose-lip syndrome could do it, I’ll bet she surpassed 450 feet. Jeezus…….A League of Their Own.
December 1st, 20117:08 pm
As long as she is not singing National Anthem.
Alex No Can Hit
I’m pretty anxious for the Braves to get a LF !
Joe Montana was traded coming off a serious elbow injury and basically forced the Niners to trade him. Ronnie Lott was not released, he left as a free agent, as did Rice (who was also coming off a major injury and was not resigned, mainly because of Terrell Owens). None of them were let go in their prime, or when they were the best player on the team.
December 1st, 20117:09 pm
Wait a minute…
ALA the fat lady KATE SMITH? Ya’ gotta’ be in PHILLY for that.
December 1st, 20117:10 pm
consider the source, cab
December 1st, 20117:11 pm
Now, that is a PL sighting. He just couldn’t refrain from his “………your time post” usual entrance music. He’s all sorts of awful.
O.K……enough yuck’s, later chuck’s.
December 1st, 20117:12 pm
richbrave – A foot or more of snow last week and none left – it’s been in the mid 50;s since then and just got colder today.
December 1st, 20117:13 pm
Fiske, Bench, Pudge are rariies….
Leave Bench off that list — He fell off the cliff once he turned 33.
December 1st, 20117:14 pm
Steve, I agree on Alex. I sure hope it ain’t Tyler/Wilson with Seth Smith and Matt Diaz in LF.
December 1st, 20117:15 pm
The Braves already have a LF. It’s between CF and the left foul line
December 1st, 20117:16 pm
yeah Efrim, he shows up from time to time, always with a few avatars in tow to make it look like someone is stupid enough to agree with him. The N8 posts were likely his too. now that DOB spends so little time here when the cats away, the mouse will play
You mean you don’t like platoons, Efrim?
I know. Just thought I’d mention the reasons Bill Walsh (who is one of my sports idols, by the way) made the decisions he did…had nothing to do with maximizing value.
December 1st, 20117:18 pm
And it’s not that I’m really pining for AGon back or anything, but he’s…serviceable? And we do need a SS…
I like platoons, just not ones that aren’t better than Prado for roughly the same cost..
“Dave O’Brien has the worst blog among the reporters covering baseball teams. I am always seeing other people that have scoop about the Braves before he does. My Man? Did You ever Stop To Think That D.O.B.’s blog is The Current version of the old TBS for a lot of Out of State Braves Fans who don’t get the Braves Media outlet that we get here in The “A”…?
December 1st, 20117:20 pm
Lew, there’s some anger within Braves fans. All those years of exiting the payoffs early started the build up and most recently the collapse exploded their anger and disappointment. All this talent through the years and 1 world title. No sense on some of the constant whining and rediculous posts from a few though.
December 1st, 20117:21 pm
nolie, yeah, he stinks. That week or so period of him pouting that one year was awful.
Steve, sounds more and more that it’ll be Tyler with a vet backup..
I liked PLATOON, and I like platoons too when useful
December 1st, 20117:22 pm
Not that I’m agreeing with Pierre, but how do “Out of State Braves Fans” not have access to….everything on the internet?
Tell me about it. Not too hot on selling low on Prado at this point in order to get Matty D more at-bats. And Prado can be more valuable to us at more than 1 position…something we may really need.
I’d rather explore the Jurrjens market, myself.
December 1st, 20117:25 pm
And DOB is the best. What in the world woud anybody hate on our Dave for? He’s done nothing but feed us Braves and baseball entertainment though the years. Throw in some hilarious comments, movies/music and good, sometimes weird ass food, and that’s our buddy.
We got your back DOB
I don’t see JJ going anywhere. He is at a lower trade value now and might be needed with Huddy getting cut on.
December 1st, 20117:28 pm
“Not that I’m agreeing with Pierre, but how do “Out of State Braves Fans” not have access to….everything on the internet?”
When Total BS (TBS) stopped carrying Braves games in 2006-07 (And Before message forums and blogs took over the web) D.O.B. was usually the most consistant source to find Braves 411 as opposed to wasting time watching BSPN
Now D.O.B.’s page is easy to find with the advent of twitter and mlbtraderumors.com among other media outlets that weren’t around as late as 5 years ago…
nolie, I hate platoons. Not that they can’t work, but we’ve had some bad experience with them and I’m scarred I think.
December 1st, 20117:29 pm
See, I disagree. I think JJ won’t have a bounceback season this year and I think his value might continue to dip. I’ve never been all that impressed with his stuff and with his FB velo dropping so much this year (with his injury history) I’m leery of him. His salary will keep climbing too. If we can get a worthwhile package for him I think it’s the smart (or at least safe) thing to move him.
I think either side of the coin is a gamble, honestly.
And not worried at all about Huddy. Sounds like he’s just getting a microdisc or something, absolutely nothing to worry about.
“And DOB is the best. What in the world woud anybody hate on our Dave for? He’s done nothing but feed us Braves and baseball entertainment though the years. Throw in some hilarious comments, movies/music and good, sometimes weird ass food, and that’s our buddy.

No Diggidity! No Doubt!
What was wrong with Ryan Langerhans??
December 1st, 20117:30 pm
Like it or not, trading McCann now is in the Braves best interest. _ We mad
No its not, you dummy.
Lee in S GA
December 1st, 20117:31 pm
I mean, he does kinda suck, but so do most SS these days it seems.
it may be the hardest position to play…he does suck…so good bye…I do not want to see this guy on the team any longer….his days are over…but then he will probably be a backup somewhere ..come off the bench and W.S. here we come….damn life and sports ain’t fair
December 1st, 20117:34 pm
nolie, a customer came in our store and as I was helping him he mentioned the Braves. I swear I have no idea why he mentioned them, but he did. We got to talking about what they should trade for and he said Jurrjens will bring in more than what I thought. I doubt it. Such an injury risk and has shown too he wears down towards the end of a season. Not good. GM’s aren’t dumb, they analyze every single thing before pulling the trigger I’m sure.
Anyways, cool guy, huge Braves fan. Season ticket holder and goes to the fan fests they have.
December 1st, 20117:36 pm
Tomahawkin, what’s up dude?
December 1st, 20117:37 pm
“nolie, I hate platoons. Not that they can’t work, but we’ve had some bad experience with them and I’m scarred I think.”
I don’t Like OF platoons…But I do Like 1ST Base Platoons that were sucessful
A few years back…
J Franco and A. LaRoche Platoon was a success and most recent The B-Macc-Rossy Tandem is the best in the Game In My opinion…No other Team can F with it…
December 1st, 20117:39 pm
“Tomahawkin, what’s up dude?”
Getting Tuned Up for Thursday Night Football, Beavis and Butthead And Rasslin! Talk about some Damn Good TV on Tonight…
And I still cant get over our Epic Choke Job!!!
December 1st, 20117:40 pm
well let’s hope he is right BRIAN, that would be a good thang
STEVE, I am not worried about Huddy either except when he will be ready again, you might be right about JJ, but I’m not sure that’s how the club sees it. I do know that most GMs are likely to view him with skepticism as Cashman said last week
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
