What about 3 years from now when Reyes, oft injured and steadily in decline, is half the player he is today and has another 3 years on his contract at $15mil + per year?

No thanks.

In 2007 Reyes played in 160 games… and that number has been going down down down ever since (not even counting ‘09 when he played in 30 something games).

If the trend continues then he’ll be good for about 100 games a year by the midpoint of his new contract. He’s got the health problems of Chipper but is 10 years younger and with 75% less power.

Why wait until 2013? — move Freeman to SS, McCann to 1B, and let Ross be the catcher until Bethancourt is ready. Solves all the problems — no need to sign or trade for a SS — keep Prado in LF and let Hinske fill in in CF when Bourn needs a day off (or if LH pitcher is oing for the opposition, then Diaz can play center to give Bourn a break). No need to make any trades — who needs to worry about Defense just score more runs than the other team.

Dave O’Brien has the worst blog among the reporters covering baseball teams. I am always seeing other people that have scoop about the Braves before he does. I mean isn’t he supposed to be the closest beat writer to the Braves. Why do I consistently see other outlets get breaking Braves news before he does? Here are some examples: the Javier Vasquez trade a few years ago and the Derek Lowe signing by Cleveland. This guy is never the first to report Braves trades. I don’t understand it. Maybe he should be working the phones like a Chris Mortensen instead of reporting on music lyrics.

Sounds about right. We all gave Alex a lot of grief (and rightfully so), but he’s actually one of the better options available in my mind. He at least offers a good glove and an occasional homer. Wouldn’t do more than a 1-year deal for him, though.

Freeman can’t play SS… he plays 1B to hide a glaring flaw in his game:

Freeman throws like a girl. It’s true, he’s all elbow and even gives a girly “uhhhh… nuuuh” when he throws. I was amazed as I watched him during pregame warmups this last season. Every time he threw the ball he’d look around to see if anyone saw it and then run as fast as he could (also like a girl) back to 1B.

Great column and thank you DOB! Lots of food for thought. I have a bias against “giant” contracts. McCann is a good bet to be highly productive for at least a few more years, but I would be careful about the length of the contract. Fiske, Bench, Pudge are rareties in terms of the number of years they performed well behind the plate. More common is Javy Lopez career.

December 1st, 2011

Bill Walsh (architect of 5 Super Bowl Championships with the San Francisco 49ers) famously said that “it’s better to trade a player a year too early…than a year too late”.

Bobby Cox, John Schuerholtz, Frank Wren, Fredo Gonzalez (a combined 1 World Series Championship)….feel that a team should hold onto aging stars who are way past their prime…to placate Braves fans who are more attached to their favorite players…than they are to seeing the Braves win.

Bill Walsh traded Joe Montana (who still had a couple of good years left with Kansas City)…..and released Ronnie Lott, Jerry Rice and Roger Craig while they still had a couple of productive years left (Rice helped the Raiders make the Super Bowl in 2002).

It takes BALLS to make the moves that Walsh did…even though many 49ears fans voiced their opposition against seeing their favorite players go to other teams.

Trading Brian McCann this offseason…would reap the Braves HUGE dividends. With 2 years left (option year will be picked up) on his contract…he’d be perfect for the American League…where he can DH on days he doesnt catch.

Again, take away his pinch hitting appearances, McCann will not start at least 30-35 games a season (barring injury). He’s our cleanup hitter. Imagine if Pujols, A-Rod or any of the potent cleanup hitters on other teams had to sit their stars that many games?

Like it or not, trading McCann now is in the Braves best interest.

Joe Montana was traded coming off a serious elbow injury and basically forced the Niners to trade him. When Total BS (TBS) stopped carrying Braves games in 2006-07 (And Before message forums and blogs took over the web) D.O.B. was usually the most consistant source to find Braves 411 as opposed to wasting time watching BSPN

See, I disagree. I think JJ won’t have a bounceback season this year and I think his value might continue to dip. I’ve never been all that impressed with his stuff and with his FB velo dropping so much this year (with his injury history) I’m leery of him. His salary will keep climbing too. If we can get a worthwhile package for him I think it’s the smart (or at least safe) thing to move him.
