Who does Win Probability Added? Isn’t that what N8’s looking for in his Brooks Conrad example? Kinda curious myself. Dude might of, on a per-AB basis, had the highest of all-time that year.
RC – what your WAR stat on McCann did for me was solidify my claim that his best year was 2008 and he has been in decline since. No, I don’t mean he’s fallen off a cliff and is no longer a valued player, but that his stats have declined, even if only slightly, every years since.
My only real problem with McCann is that he has never played as a Brave as a professional, well conditioned athlete. Quite a few (and one in particular) people claim that it makes no difference in his play, but that is simply someone who has never seen the difference that being well conditioned can make in all your activities There is nothing you do that you can’t do better with practice and conditioning. Take McCann’s running. Even if he could improve his home to first time by .2 tenths of a second, he’d get 10 more hits a year. And probably that many singles turn into doubles. Not to mention he would average more than 130 games a year and extend his career in years, not games.
WPA is a stat at Fangraphs. And yes, Conrad’s would have been crazy high per AB in 2010.
keyLargo,
I don’t know that it’s appropriate to use WAR as a stat to see whether a player is improving or declining, since the hypothetical “replacement player” is different for each year. It’s primary use is to measure one players worth vs. another over a period of time. While I know that it wasn’t the case, it would be possible for McCann to have hit 50 HR in 2007 and still have that be his lowest WAR year, if all the other catchers in the league had outstanding performances as well.
Looks like the Angels may be willing to move Maicer Izturis. I think he would be a great stop gap at SS for us. Can handle the bat pretty good: .275 .339 .389 .728 (career line). Above average defender at SS, 3B, 2B. Only makes about 3.5 mil this year before becoming a FA.

Obviouly KLaw doesn’t know the start of 2010 was nothing compared to the second half of 2010…
Of course not. The start is different than the first half. Heyward’s second half was better than the first half. Never said it was better than those first two months. Nothing was better than those first two months – “start”…
Two-month start? I don’t know nothin’ about that. But that three-run bomb off Zambrano might be my favorite Brave moment of all-time. Apologies to Sid and Spiderman.

Sorry brother. I’ve got 10/5 rights. You’re gonna have to ride this contract out.
CB, Those Hogs have made me proud despite being blitzed by the top two teams in the country. I’ve been hiding in the pine trees, mostly. Literally…30 feet up in the pines. No beef in my chili this year.
I would love to see the Braves make a splash this year but I’m not sure its in the cards. We have SP who are hurt or coming off injuries which makes it harder to deal JJ. Hudson had back surgery and the last time Hanson threw in September he still had discomfort. Moving Prado opens up money but it also opens up two holes. Not sure you can get the return that makes it a worthwhile move. If you do move him Detroit makes more sense than Colorado right now. I see smaller signings such as Jack Wilson or Cody Ross type players with a trade or two that brings depth and maybe a bullpen guy.
McCan’t – Right now just wind, supposed to have a storm coming tonight. My biggest concern is that it’s going to get into the teens tonight with the chance of snow and we have a lot of people without power. I’ve never bee in winds this bad, only heard about it a handful of times.
Conrad had a big year in 2010 with a lousy finish. 25 man guys are interchangeable year in and year out. What we got from him in 2010 was great. I don’t think anybody thought he would do what he did that year. He exceeded expectations and made them to high to ever relive. I don’t see him back this year. I figure somone like Drew Sutton will replace him.
Why must the Braves trade Heyward after only 2 seasons? He hasn’t even hit his peak yet,and most is writing him off. That is just insane…..Give him two more years, and then decide.
abwright (December 1st, 2011 10:10 am): ” ‘The length of the contract AGonzalez wanted is not a factor — ‘
It is in the sense that the Braves did not want to play the arbitration game. Since AGon wanted more than a one-year contract, why offer him a one-year contract (arbitration)?
To get the supllemental draft pick when he declined arbitration. Or to get one year of AGonzalez as a bridge to TyPast.
I cannot see the Braves getting anyone better than AGonz for just one year.
Heyward has a lot of potential to be a star player. He has to find a way to stay healthy. As long as he stays hurt his numbers will suffer because even when healthy he has a flawed swing. Add injury to that and the numbers spiral downward.
Not Wren. I wouldn’t trade Heyward, Prado and Jurrjens for Trout and Izturis. No reason to think Heyward can’t bounce back next year. And with service time included, how is that a reasonable trade for the Braves?
Agon? No thanks BLECH! offense needs a boost beyind keeping Prado in LF if Agon is re-signed may as well cancel the season, be the same outcome in Sept.
The Angels would do that trade simply for Heyward and one of the other two.
No they wouldn’t. Trout is pretty much untouchable to them. And it would make no sense to trade Trout for Jason. They are very similar players and Trout is nearly 3 years younger
Where are you in Utah? I live in Layton up on the bench, but I’m presently in Pocatello and getting ready to hit the road for home in a bit.
My wife sent me some pix and it looks like a hurricane hit our neighborhood. I think most of my trees survived, but I lost my satellite dish, and most of my gutters and fence.
No they wouldn’t. Trout is pretty much untouchable to them. And it would make no sense to trade Trout for Jason. They are very similar players and Trout is nearly 3 years younger
I don’t think the Braves would trade Heyward and Prado or Jurrjens for Trout either…..
Lookin for a deal, lookin for a deal, lookin for some players maybe I can steal,McCutcheon on my left hand , Aybar on my right, which one am I gonna dream about tonite.Lookin for a deal , lookin for a deal, Rockies wantin Prado ,and lookin for a deal.
Who said anything about it being reasonable? It does take care of the OF and SS/3B, if Wells bounces back somewhat, but it was never meant to be a realistic proposition (obviously).
Ward – I’m lucky and in an area that hasn’t been affected yet… I’ve got a back up plan if necessary though. It’s only affecting me in that I work in landscaping so my crews are going full force cleaning up for our contracts!
No they wouldn’t. Trout is pretty much untouchable to them. And it would make no sense to trade Trout for Jason. They are very similar players and Trout is nearly 3 years younger
Right, they are very similar players. Except that one has 2 years of MLB experience under his belt, AND the Angels would be getting another All-Star player in the deal. It’s the type of trade that would never be offered, but I don’t see that the Angels would turn it down if it was.
Lawrie looks like he is going to hit really well in that park too. That team is on the up….
C Arencibia, 1B Lind, 2B?, SS Escobar, 3B Lawrie, LF Snider/Thames, CF Rasmus, RF Bautista, DH Encarnacion.
SP Romero, Morrow, Cecil, Alvarez, #5
One of the best farm systems in the sport with D’Arnaud, Gose, Marisnick, Perez, Mcguire, Hutchinson, Molina, Jenkins, Nicolino and their 2011 draftees.
DS1 – I’m in West Valley, we have had some wind here but nothing like Bountiful and north is getting. I thought I was the only guy on this blog in Utah. Good to know I’m not the only Braves fan here!!!
We’re good- thanks! We managed to avoid the worst of the winds- my poor sister in law was home with 2 young kids with no power and no husband last night…she was a bit freaked out. Power outage also shut down the airport and turned Pasadena into a mess…lots of massive trees uprooted and things like that, but haven’t heard any reports of injuries…
Those two definitely provide an upgrade. Though Quentin struggles to stay on the field and with the time that Chipper and Quentin miss for injuries/days off, it scares me to have another one on the roster.
DS – If you are driving from Pokey back here you be extra careful! I grew up in the Pocatello area and that drive can be sketchy when there is little wind.
October 21, 1983: the Atlanta Braves sent Brett Butler and Brook Jacoby to the Cleveland Indians to complete an earlier deal made on August 28, 1983. August 28, 1983: The Atlanta Braves sent players to be named later and $150,000 to the Cleveland Indians for Len Barker..
Alrighty let us debunk this myth about trading Prado opens up 2 holes right now.
Prado was a starting LF’er and backup to Chipper you say right? Thus if we move him we need a LF’er and a backup to Chipper!
However, this is incorrect the team already requires an infield backup who can play SS(unless they are going to go with Sutton who isn’t a bad choice) Prado cannot play SS. So an additional player was already needed to fill a middle infield utility spot so all trading Prado ACTUALLY requires is a replacement in LF (as far as the 2012 25 man roster goes).
In fact, I have stated on here before that the way the Braves could replace him in LF would be to A)sign a LF’er who can backup CF B) trade Matt Diaz or C) trade Martin Prado. As the bench would have no spot for Prado as it would leave the team without either a SS or a CF backup… Not good.
So, remember that the team is going to get a middle infield backup anyway, and Prado’s inability to play SS is a liability to the Braves (while is ability to be a great starting 2nd baseman gives the team lots of trade value). I almost guarantee he gets traded. It’s either traded or starting in lF I can’t see any other scenario that works.
OR this either! BLech!
December 12, 1975: Traded by the Atlanta Braves with Ralph Garr to the Chicago White Sox for Ken Henderson, Ozzie Osborn and Dick Ruthven,
Ozzie should just stick to music or whatever! LOL
Worst trade Bobby Cox ever made! Paul Assenmacher
August 24, 1989: Traded by the Atlanta Braves to the Chicago Cubs for players to be named later. The Chicago Cubs sent Kelly Mann (September 1, 1989) and Pat Gomez (September 1, 1989) to the Atlanta Braves to complete the trade
Who were the other trades for Joe? I just see that the Braves traded someone for a bunch of crappy players.
I don’t think the Braves are going to make any big moves this offseason… I think next Winter will be crazy, but this Winter is going to be a slow one for any Braves fan hoping for sweeping changes. Izturis would be a nice addition, but I wouldn’t bet on seeing him in a Braves uni.
If only the Braves could take the money saved this year by trading Lowe and getting KK and McLouth off the books, put it in a savings account, let it earn some interest, and then make a run at one or two of the big names that’ll be available next year. Sigh… i know it won’t happen, but it’s fun to think about at least.
So you would be okay with Drew Sutton playing 3B for the 30-40 gms that Chipper will miss? I get what you are saying with Prado but our backup 3B needs to be able to handle starting 40 gms and putting up decent numbers, as well as the 4th OF. But I agree on him getting traded. As much as I’d hate to see him go I think its likely going to happen. Hopefully not to Colorado.
Jimmy, thanks! Good news today though, could be going home as early as Sunday. Doctors are so far amazed how quickly he’s gaining his strength back so we’re very hopefully he’ll be home for Christmas.
I wonder if Torii Hunter would be made available. Obviously for us they would need to pick up a good bit of salary but he is in the last year of contract and it would make room for them to keep Peter Bourjos and promote Trout. Though they may assume to keep Trout down another year. I believe hes only around 20 or 21 in age. They have some young talent over there in Trout and Trumbo with no real place to put them this year.
Yep, Sutton has shown the ability to get on base in the minors and hasn’t had enough consistent PA’s in the big leagues to really establish what he can do. If Sutton can play good defense at 3b and put up a .350 OBP in 30 games or so, I think the team will be just fine.Considering that there aren’t many other options if Prado isn’t going to start in LF.
I can’t see Sutton doing much worse than a Hinske/Diaz platoon for 30 games in LF, maybe in SLG but not in OBP.
Hunter has a no trade tho. So the Braves would probably have to offer an additional year at $10 mill or so to get him to accept any trades…. I’m not so sure we want 38 yr old Hunter in LF in 2013.
We made the September 2007 Mets look like the 1927 Yankees

1. McCann to the Red Sox or the Yankees for a plethora of highly rated prospects.
2. Jose Reyes signs with the Braves as a free agent. Hits 2nd in the order behind Bourn.
3. Jair Jurrjens to the Royals for Alex Gordon….plays left field for the next 10 years….hits #3 in the order (assuming Fredo does the right thing and permanently drops Chipper to #6 spot of the order.
Projected order:
1. Bourn
2. Reyes
3. Gordon
4. Uggla
5. Freeman
6. Chipper
7. Heyward
8. Ross (I’m sure that the Braves can pry a highly rated, Major League ready prospect in any trade involving McCann).
Prado becomes the super sub (we all know that Chipper will need at least 30-40 off….if Heyward struggles against lefties…Prado can take Heyward’s spot).
Starting rotation:
1. Hudson
2. Hanson
3. Minor
4. Medlen
5. Teheran (or someone Frank Wren can get good value in on the free agent market).
In essence, we’d be trading McCann, Jurrjens, 1st round draft pick……..for Jose Reyes, Alex Gordon and a some highly rated prospects.
We made the September 2007 Mets look like the 1927 Yankees

NickB…….Damn, lol! Totally spaced out on Beachy.
Revished Starting Rotation:
1. Hudson
2. Hanson
3. Beachy
4. Minor
5. Medlen/Teheran
Braves stocked in young, cheap, starting pitching. Trading Jair Jurrjens for someone of Alex Gordon’s caliber improves our lineup, Jurrjens gives the Royals the ace they need on that staff.
I know that Pastornicky’s been getting a lot of local press. However, Reyes is the real deal. Dude has speed…as well as hits for average, makes contact, is a triples machine…just an exciting, top of the lineup type of player the Braves need.

Right, they are very similar players. Except that one has 2 years of MLB experience under his belt, AND the Angels would be getting another All-Star player in the deal. It’s the type of trade that would never be offered, but I don’t see that the Angels would turn it down if it was.

Obviously for us they would need to pick up a good bit of salary but he is in the last year of contract and it would make room for them to keep Peter Bourjos and promote Trout.

1. Hudson
2. Hanson
3. Minor
4. Medlen
