I have no real trouble with Gonzo coming back considering the alternatives available. They have till Dec 12 to offer him a contract IIRC, but it seems like he wants more than one year and they don’t.
my thoughts, they will move prado to SS for this upcoming season. they will then sign a permanent left fielder through free agency or trade. this allows one more year for SS Pastornicky in the minors. prodo will move back to third the following year after chippers retirement. all holes filled with only one major move and a better offense to boot!
Braves will prolly go down the list, offering every available SS a 1 year deal (with OK) money, ala Jaimie Carroll. Every team that is willing to offer aging veteran SS a 2-year deal will scoop the Braves.

sigh. more stoopid, baseball ignorant talk. The two greatest hitting coaches on the last 50 years or so were Charlie Lau and Rudy Jaramillo, neither one of whom hit a lick
I’ll take a lights out closer over a back of the rotation pitcher every day. might even take a lights out set up man over a mediocre starter
I sure hope Minor and Delgado are better than back end guys. I think they can both be solid mid rotation types. As to the value of a shut down closer or reliever over starters, it’s a tough call for me. Case by case basis sort of thing, imo.

The slate is clean for the next Houston general manager: The only Astros player signed for 2013 and beyond is Wandy Rodriguez.
Slate is pretty clean for Frank Wren too. Dan Uggla is the only player guaranteed a contract for 2013 and beyond.
Ah but Efrim, the Astros’ slate is pristine in cleanliness. There isn’t anything in the minors or majors for that team. And they are heading into a new league that year. In effort to make the AL West “tougher” Bud moved the most useless team in the business.
nolie but I think not offering Gonzalez arbitration means that wren has another SS in his sights, and doesn’t want to have to wait to find out if Gonzalez accepts before pulling the trigger on this other deal…DAP

be cause he doesnt have to give an answer until december 7th. if wren has a deal he has his eye on, he doesnt want to be hamstrung, waiting until the 7th to make sure he isnt going to have 2 SS on his roster. sure, gonzalez might have answered by now…but he doesnt have to, so why expect him to? no, i thinkif wren didnt have someone else in mind, he wouldnt have had a problem paying gonzalez’s arbitration salary of around $4mil.
Jay (with all the Numbers after his name) – That roster is something else. Seems you traded Prado for an infield bench player. Dude, it’s Kimbrel, not Kimberly and Medlen ain’t a Loogy. Sheesh.
Jed – Jack Wilson is better than AGon on defense? Really? REALLY????
Mitchell – How’s that pitty party working for you? Why do you even follow the Braves if you feel that way? What a Maroon.
NO MORE WREN – Wren has not done a good job as GM. HE’S DONE A GREAT JOB AS GM. Tell me, without hindsight, what you would have done differently, in light of the budget restrains. Another Maroon.
Mike – Prado at SS? Really? NOT!
nolie – I dopn’t always agree with you, but you continue to show your depth of baseball knowledge, as in your @2:45.
Just my thoughts (not worth much) – I would like to see us aquire a LF for now and future, with good OBP and some pop…and at least servicable on D.
Bridge guy for SS. I expect some combo of Pastor, Turdo, and Simmons at 3B and SS by 2013.
I hope we can keep Prado as a super sub at several positions, and insurance at 3B. If not, we MUST find another Infante/Prado type.
Trade JJ if you must, but I would prefer to wait until trade deadline/offseason 2012/2013. Hopefully he will be healthy, and value increase. Also, I would like to see how Hanson is doing.
Any news on JACK WILSON? Could we actually be headed for a ‘Jumpin’ JACK the flash’ moment or rather, season?
I understand A-GON’s desire for a mult-year deal. His career is near it’s end. But thank you Mr. WREN for just saying ‘no’ to another career-ending retirement deal. We don’t need them.
And a comment on the new CBA regarding the hard-cap draft going into effect. My grandson will in all liklihood play for VIRGINIA and get a degree before entering the draft. The money for a degree plus the contacts he would make would offset a hard-slot offer IMO. I suspect there will be far fewer youngsters taking the pro’s money going forward with a hard-slot in place. And I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the lawyer-agents aren’t looking at some way to litigate against that portion of the new agreement. There’s a lot of commissions at stake and player monies on the line here.
How about international players? Are they to be hard-slotted too? Or does this just effect U.S. residents. Might precipitate some foreign residency moves if it doesn’t.
rich – Good luck to your grandson, in baseball or not. The degree from UVA has great value, and he can still go pro afterward.
Doubt there’s a case against the CBA in light of the anti-trust exemption (which I believe only MLB enjoys among the sports. That’s why, for example, NFL and NBA owners can pretty much move their teams when and where they wish).
I know about the ant-trust exception for MLB. It takes an act of Congress there, but they must be brain-storming collectively as we type. Were the agents and representatives allowed to participate in the new CBA negotiations? And I’m still wondering if my grandson should move in with my wife’s first cousin, and next door to ‘Big Papi’ in Dominica. Heh!
Someone asked me about possibility of Jurrjens-for-Yonder Alonso (from the Reds). I think that’s unlikely, since Reds will demand far more than just a Jurrjens alone for Alonso, a slugging young 1B who has also played LF. They want a front-line starter or closer for him, reportedly, but I think they’d also demand a piece or two in addition to that pitcher. And the front-line starter would preferably be one without health questions, I’m sure.
Talked to someone who also said he doesn’t think they’ll trade Alonso, that they’ll keep him because they know they’ll probably need a replacement for Votta a year from now when they might have to trade him because of $ (Votto’s owed $17 mill salary in ‘13, then is eligible for free agency after that).
David O’Brien, I’m surprised the White Sox haven’t came up in any rumors with our Braves as of yet. But then again they have what we want and vice versa, while Frank Wren tends to keep a tight lip.
I like the look of our club with the exception of SS. Throwing a prospect into the mix at the start of the season rarely works for any team. Think the Cubs would consider JJ and Diory for Starlin Castro? I like the thought of Bourn and Castro 1, 2 in our lineup.
And even IF the Cubs would consider trading him – in almost 300 MLB games, the kid has hit over .300, .340, with a .766 OPS and over 30 2B two consecutive years and makes the MLB minimum.
An injured pitcher and a minor league scrub surely won’t get the job done. I’d be willing to bet that they want Teheran, Delgado, Bethancourt, AND Jurrjens in return.
Wow. Guess the Homer in me hoping the price wouldn’t be that high. Still not big on the idea of Pastornicky starting the season at SS, and don’t see too many affordable SS FA’s you would want to waste the money on.
13 Stitches – Yeah, got to agree on the availability of good shortstops – not much apparently out there.
Bet ots of clubs would love to have Castro, though. The Cubs are going to rebuild over the next couple of years and feel that he’s an integral part of the rebuilding effort.
Starlin Castro is 21 and five years away from free agency…..any questions?
Are questions limited to just those that relate to Starlin Castro or can they be about anything? I’ve got a lot of leftover turkey and was hoping you might suggest some recipes.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Pastornicky can and will be a great SS. I’d just hate to see him thrown into the mix too early and struggle at the plate like Frenchy, or worse end up as a head case like Davies. Our pitching staff is relatively young, so I’d think the SS position defensively would be vital. I wouldn’t want that kind of pressure to start the season.

The defense would probably actually be better off if they moved Chipper back to his orginal postion and stuck Prado at 3B.
I’m afraid that Chipper at age 58 (or whatever he is now) has more range at SS than Prado would. Which pretty much sums that up, huh?

but I think not offering Gonzalez arbitration means that wren has another SS in his sights, and doesn’t want to have to wait to find out if Gonzalez accepts before pulling the trigger on this other deal…DAP
not sure how that makes sense since he might have agreed by now. I think he doesn’t wanna pay what he thinks Gonzo might get in arb. Last time he offered ark he got bit in the butt, as they also did b4 with Maddux. I doubt they will offer arb much anymore until they free up funds, if then

In effort to make the AL West “tougher” Bud moved the most useless team in the business.

be cause he doesnt have to give an answer until december 7th. if wren has a deal he has his eye on, he doesnt want to be hamstrung, waiting until the 7th to make sure he isnt going to have 2 SS on his roster. sure, gonzalez might have answered by now…but he doesnt have to, so why expect him to? no, i thinkif wren didnt have someone else in mind, he wouldnt have had a problem paying gonzalez’s arbitration salary of around $4mil.

A few thoughts after reviewing this page –

The Braves current depth chart at SS:
1.Tyler Pastornicky age 21 RH / 5-11 170
2.Brandon Hicks age 25 RH / 6-2 200
3. Diory Hernandez age 27 RH / 6-0 185
4. Josh Wilson age 30 RH / 6-0 175
5. Drew Sutton age 28 BB / 6-3 200
6. Matt Lipka age 19 RH / 6-1 195
7. Andrelton Simmons age 21 RH / 6-2 170
In case anyone is wondering why Lipka and Simmons aren’t higher it’s because neither is likely to see big league action in 2012.
