If heyward plays like he is projected to it’s like we signed a huge free agent. Is it possible the costanza kid can play left. If are team stayed healthy last year we would have been alot better. Heyward,Jones,Gonzo,Beachy,JJ,Hanson,Mac,Prado all where hurt last year. The one guy that I wish would have missed some games (lowe) keep being consistently horrible. So maybe we do better if these guys can keep of the DL.

not necessarily Jeffrey. it depends on the individual swing. In its relationship to a golf swing, whippiness can actually drive a ball farther than muscle power. a certain amount of muscle if fine and ofter a help but if done incorrectly and in the wrong parts of the body it can hinder. A guy as large as Jason does not need to get as bulky as he was last year to hit with power and if might have hampered him

Braves interested in Yankees Shortstop Eduardo Nunez reported on MLBTR.

“They need offense,” said Harper’s source. “They need a shortstop because they don’t want to bring [Alex] Gonzalez back, and they like Nunez a lot. They know the jury is out on him defensively, but they think his offense is strong enough that he could move to the outfield if he can’t be their long-term answer at short.”

Atlanta did not discuss Jair Jurrjens or any specific players on their side with the Yankees, and they also showed interest in Nunez last winter. The 24-year-old infielder hit .265/.313/.385 with five homers in 338 plate appearances this past year, stealing 22 bases in 28 tries as well.

Nunez played short and third base primarily last season, getting regular at-bats when Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez hit the disabled list at different times of the summer. He also saw time at second base and occasionally filled in at the corner outfield spots. Nunez committed 20 errors in his limited time, most coming on throws, so his ability to play the left side of the infield on an everyday basis is still in question.

VaBravesFan: I made a suggestion for the Braves to trade Jurjjens and Bourn, to the Yankees for Gardner , Nunez and another minor league bat. Gardner would replace Bourn and have 4 more years before free agency, Nunez would be a short term SS until Simmons or Pastornicky are ready and the Braves would have 5 more years of him before Free agency: In addition, the Braves would save almost $12 million in payroll this year and have CF set for 4 more years, SS set for 5 more years if Nunez turns into to a above average SS or he could be a very good utility player or trade bait.

Well Nunez doesn’t strike out much at all, but also doesn’t walk much either. Has speed and is still really young. For me the main question is defense. You don’t want to mess around at a position like SS. Watching through the years you quickly realize this position is key for good defense.

Yeah, I’d be fine with him for at least until Pastornicky is ready, then he could move to another position or be a super sub type player like he is with the Yankees.

The Braves are looking to add offense this winter, and John Harper of The New York Daily News reports that they let the Yankees know they’d be interested in trading for shortstop Eduardo Nunez last week.

The 24-year-old infielder hit .265/.313/.385 with five homers in 338 plate appearances this past year, stealing 22 bases in 28 tries as well.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/braves-asked-yankees-shortstop-eduardo-nunez-trade-posibilities-grow-article-1.980241

Nunez is a long term answer at SS. With Pastornicky and Simmons in the system, it seems a little strange that they’d give up anything significant to bring him in. I’m not sure how they could think he profiles in a corner outfield spot – his bat does not play there, imo.

Efrim

November 20th, 2011
8:29 am

Later in the article, Harper suggests Swisher, Nunez and a middling prospect for Jurrjens.

I’ve watched him play and I’m not sure I’d consider him anything that special. Perhaps they think he could be the type of player that plays SS and takes over for Chipper at 3rd in 2013. Or he takes on Prado’s role.

I don’t think we match up well with the Yankees. Their strengths in the farm system are starting pitching(Manny Baneulos, Delin Betances, Adam Warren) and catching(Jesus Montero, Austin Romine and Gary Sanchez). Two things the Braves don’t really need.

braveslifer

November 20th, 2011
8:32 am

That rumor had a couple of errors to me. He suggested that JJs est arb figure was $7M. He also proposed the trade of JJ for Nunez, Swisher, and prospects and stated that the Yankees should be happy with that. That seems like a substantial overpay on the Yankees end to me.

Efrim

November 20th, 2011
8:40 am

They also said that the Braves will come down on Jurrjens asking price – I agree with this. I don’t think he’ll come down much, but I think he’d trade Jair for less than a “Greinke like package”.

Eduardo Nunez, Manny Banuelos, Slade Heathcott, and a minor league relief pitcher.

Efrim

November 20th, 2011
8:41 am

braveslifer, agreed. Doesn’t make sense if Nunez is the key piece to the deal. If Nunez is the centerpiece than it makes sense that they’d add minor leaguers.

This is much more realistic for JJ than what the writer proposed.

I agree, however I hope it was the Yankees that started the talks. With Pastornicky and Simmons in the system, I really don’t see why there is interest in Nunez. I’d want a lot more than him too, in terms of prospects. He is not a LF, imo.

After watching the Arizona fall league championship, i can see why we are interested in both Wil Myers and Tim Wheeler. if we could pickup both of them, along with Heyward, we would have the makings of good young outfield for many years.

Efrim

November 20th, 2011

This is much more realistic for JJ than what the writer proposed.

Yeah, and I’m just trying to match what a “Greinke like deal” would equal to. I don’t think it’s a great match. I’d demand Banuelos in that deal – but I wouldn’t expect them to add him.

VaBravesFan

All the time Jurrjens has missed the past 2 seasons in my opinion drops the value below a Zack Grienke type deal. Gonna be hard to get a big return. Solid chance that someone will come close to our price with the thin pitching market.

#braves long interested in nyy ss nunez (as john harper said). but him alone doesn’t rent jair jurrjens for a week. – Jon Heyman

Swisher and Nunez is a solid deal for the Braves, but given that Swisher is a free agent after next year, I’d rather Nunez + prospects for Jurrjens. Just have a hard time finding a match with their prospects, and I can’t see them dealing six years of control of Banuelos for two years of Jurrjens.

TommyP

November 20th, 2011

Nunez is definitely the super-utility guy the Braves had in Infante with perhaps a little hope he turns into more. The guy played every position last year except CF, 1B and C, I believe. Of course, his SS/3B defense was not good at all.

Swisher makes $10+ mil next year before becoming a FA? Not gonna happen, especially with Bourn about to hit FA.

njbraves

November 20th, 2011

Where would Swisher play? He’s a RF and I’m pretty sure we already have that position filled. As for Nunez, he’s awful defensively and his bat isn’t good enough to make up for that. Hate this trade.

Wonder if the Braves would deal Jurrjens for Bartlett/Headley? Headley is ready to break out but needs to get out of Petco. (.864 OPS on the road last year…805 lifetime road OPS)

The Braves would have a LF and also a guy that can slide to 3B when Chipper gets injured, in addition to a guy that will take over 3B full time when Chipper retires.

I’d have SD pick up some of Bartlett’s salary in that deal but SD could use a #2 starting pitcher in that rotation.
