his .750 career OPS on the road is better than Prado’s .745 career road OPS…DOB

you are kidding, right? that is all but statistically meaningless

so is the 110 to 108 OPS+

I would be very reluctant to trade Prado for Seth Smith and Charlie Blackmon. Blackmon is left-handed and has never been anything more than a C prospect – Smith is a platoon left fielder with limited versatility. I don’t think the Braves match up with the Rockies at all, unless the Braves send a pitching prospect or Jurrjens along with Prado to get Nolan Arenado.

Think of how valuable Prado is to the Braves. Now imagine Chipper, Uggla, Heyward or Freeman going on the DL for an extended period of time. Now how valuable is Prado – especially in light of the other options at those positions?

Like most Braves fans I don’t want to see Prado traded. However if we could get Smith and Wheeler or Blackmon I think we should do it. It’s doubtful we will resign Bourn and next year we will be looking for a CF. This trade would resolve that issue and Smith would be a serviceable LF.

I would like for the Braves to expand the trade to include Chris Nelson of the Rockies, he is a ss but can play 3b and 2b. He could assume Prado’s position at backing up Chipper and could back up the ss position. He had good numbers in AAA but they fail off when called up to the Rockies. He is also a Georgia boy having played HS ball in Decatur. Not sure what the Rockies would ask for to include him in the trade. This trade could resolve our future CF problem, provide an adequate LF and back up to the 3b and ss position.

Any thoughts.

Is Pastornicky’s glove ready? If so, seems like letting his bat mature in live action would not be worse than Gonzo’s bat

Braves love to trade for guys they know they can’t keep. Bourn is the latest one after Drew and Teixeira, trade 4 prospects for 1 1/2 yrs. Phils gave up better prospects to Houston for Pence but 1.he’s a better player 2. has 1 more yr left than Bourn and 3. will likely sign an extension with Phils and stay many more years.
some people never learn. even rats figure out a maze at some point.

As for the Seth Smith/Tim Wheeler combo for Martin Prado……

Well hell, I would settle for Dexter Fowler/Tim Wheeler and call it a good trade. Fowler’s a much better athlete with a higher overall ceiling, and he’s three years younger than Seth Smith.

BBQ recommendation: DOB, or anyone else for that matter, if you make it to Sarasota this winter or in Spring Training you need to hit Nancy’s BBQ – it’s amazing! For years she’s only catered which she’s done for our family when we’re in town on many occasions. Last year she opened a brick ‘n’ mortar place in downtown and it’s fantastic. The Braves are in a good position where if they make the right decision they will be a very strong contender in 2012. Even with the team the way it is, they are likely to make a playoff push. I just hope all the players, but moreover, the pitchers can stay healthy. I have always wondered, though, if Prado could ever play SS? I know it is not the same as 2B and plays different, but it is closer to being 2B than LF is and if Chipper goes down, we still have versaility in some ways with Prado still on the roster. Maybe that will make the search for a LF easier. I don’t know…just asking.

Either way, I support Wren and the team! I just hope we can find the right fits and the current roster can hit better than last year.

Good read DOB, thanks.

McCann maxed out on all the escalators tied to Gold Gloves, Silver Sluggers and All-Star appearances, pushing the salary to $11.5 million.

How did Heap max those out? What was the combination? I mean, yeah 9 out of a possible 15 works for me, but I haven’t seen an explanation anywhere.

I think you meant Jurrjens here:
However, other teams could be reluctant to meet the Braves’ asking price because of a few factors: Prado has ended each of the past two seasons with knee injuries; he’s represented by Boras and could thus be difficult to retain beyond 2013; and he has less than overpowering stuff, leading some skeptics to suggest he’ll never be a true ace.

jch, no! it has been hashed and re-hashed, and to the point of regurgitation about Prado, and Pastornicky at SS for the Braves this year. Prado cannot play ss he is worthless there, and there isn’t any way in hell Pastornicky is sniffing ss for the Braves before 2013 if he even remains, Most likley given the track record of Wren, when it comes to over-hyped prospects, TRADED, seems his destiny.

I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again, 2013 is the year of the Braves, lucky if they get any higher than 4th in 2012 behind the Phils, Marlins and Nats in that order. They must rid themselves of Chipper, Lowe, Hudsons payroll (almost half the team) before they can go after a 3rd baseman and outfielder. 2013 will also be the year that all our young players will be ready for the big show.

Prado is an all-star at 2B only….not enough production at LF, some apologists would say it was staph, maybe , maybe not , I would say playing out of position along with an ailing leg caused his slip, or maybe he just peaked, and is now regressing to the norm. either way a 5 mill sub is not happening in Atlanta.

DOB, nice blog, man. Very good

What I get from Wren here is that both Prado and JJ will be traded. He said it in so many words without actually saying it.

JJ to Reds makes sense for both sides. JJ is right he is gettig groundballs. Groundball pitcher in their park is a must. Somebody on their side I’d hope they stay way clear of is Stubbs. Poor hitter, but fast and a good fielder. Hope they wouldn’t be tempted by his speed/fielding. He sucks at everything else.

BBraves

November 18th, 2011
9:29 pm

Sure hope the Braves do not sign some washed up relivers like last year. The players the Braves have in the system is better than some middle reliver they can sign as a free agent. Keep Prado and trade JJ is they can get a decent return. I like JJ but he just can make it through a whole year without injury.

Well, I cant sell my momma short on loving me
I guess that’s why she let me go so far
Momma always stopped me short of stealing
I guess thats why I had to steal that car.

She told me not to smoke it
But I did and it took me far away
And I turned out to be
The only hell mama ever raised.

I pulled into Atlanta, stolen tags and almost out of gas
I had to get some money, and lately I’d learned how to get it fast
Those neon lights was calling me and somehow I had to get downtown
I reached into the glovebox, another liquor store went down.

Chorus:
And I sing “Precious Memories,” take me back to the good ol’ days
I can hear my momma singing, “Rock of Ages” cleft for me
She tried to turn me on to Jesus, but I turned on to the devil’s ways
And I turned out to be the only hell my moma ever raised.

When they put those handcuffs on me, Lord how I fought to resist
But that agent clamped ‘em tighter, ’til that metal bit into my wrist
They took my boots and my billfold, my fingerprints, and the profile of my face
Then they locked away the only hell my moma ever ever raised.

Chorus:
And I sing “Precious Memories,” take me back to the good ol’ days
I can hear my momma singing, “Rock of Ages” cleft for me
She tried to turn me on to Jesus, but I turned on to the devil’s ways

Johnny Paycheck::::::::::::::::::

Well, I can’t recall, one time in my life,
I’ve felt as lonely as I do tonight.
I feel like I could lay down, and get up no more,
It’s the damndest feelin’; I never felt it before.

Tonight I feel like an old violin,
Soon to be put away and never played again.
Don’t ask me why I feel like this, hell, I can’t say.
I only wish this feelin’ would just go away.

I guess it’s ‘cos the truth,
Is the hardest thing I ever faced.
‘Cos you can’t change the truth,
In the slightest way. I tried.
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/j/johnny_paycheck/old_violin.html ]
So I asked myself,
I said: ‘John, where do you go from here?’
Then like a damned fool,
I turned around and looked in the mirror.

And there I saw, an old violin.
Soon to be put away and never played again.

So one more time, just to be sure,
I said: ‘John, where in the hell do you go from here?’
You know that when a nickel’s worth of beer,
When I looked in the mirror, that’s when I knew.

That there I was seein’, an old violin.
Soon to be put away, and never played again.

And just like that, it hit me,
That old violin and I were just alike.
We’d give our all to music,
And soon, we’ll give our life.
