It’s Braves vs. prospects in spring finale at Gwinnett

The Braves will try something different to spice up the end of spring training in 2012, playing an exhibition game against some of their top prospects at Triple-A Gwinnett’s Coolray Field on April 3 at 6:05 p.m.

In past years the Braves played a pair of exhibition games against an American League team at Turner Field between the final Grapefruit League game in Florida and the regular season opener. Those games, sparsely attended in recent years, aren’t on the schedule in ‘12.

The Braves will open their 34-game spring training schedule March 3 with a home game against Detroit at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., and close the Florida schedule with an April 2 home game against the New York Mets.

The New York Yankees play the Braves twice in Lake Buena Vista — March 10 and March 28 — and World Series champion St. Louis visits on March 19. Philadelphia plays the Braves once at Lake Buena Vista, on April 1.

Braves pitchers and catchers report to spring training Feb. 19 and have their first workout Feb. 20. Other position players report Feb. 24 and the first full-squad workout is Feb. 25.

Individual spring-training game tickets go on sale Jan. 7 (Wide World of Sports Box office, Ticketmaster, or braves.com/springtraining). Ticket information for the April 3 game at Gwinnett will be announced later.

Waiting to see who the Braves bring to Camp and who is back with the team. Look forward to seeing some of the top prospects there to show their ability. Hope we have both speed and hitting for average and not so much hitting with POWER.

just saw this on ESPN……
• There is a trade brewing between the Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers centering around Martin Prado for Delmon Young. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez told me he wants an impact right-handed bat. Trading Prado, who can play second, third and left, would sacrifice the Braves’ insurance plan for aging veteran Chipper Jones, who is a major health risk at third base.

HEY. Congrats, seriously serious, DOB. With a comma, and including more words, YOU BROKE THIS NEWS. I swear this is the first I have read this and ‘this’ relates to the Atlanta Braves. Look at you. Breaking news and stuff. I bet Jon Paul Morosi is kicking himself over this. You should take a week or three off and celebrate. Kick back, you know? Seriously. Comma. Sarcasim.

Ray,

You’re crazy. The Braves are going to be a favorite to win the wild card or the division again next year. September is a fluke and the Braves home games being sparsely attended has nothing to do with Liberty Media owning the Braves. It has to do with how awful a sports town Atlanta is. The Braves were one of the two best teams in the NL and one of the 4 best teams in all of baseball for 5/6th of the season and attendance was down. Still over 30,000 a game but no where near what it should have been for a team as good as the Braves were through August.

DOB, Is Terdoslavich possibly being targeted as our next 3rd baseman? If so, by what date?
Who are the others that will battle it out in our farm system to replace Chipper when he retires?
Or do you see the Braves making a trade or buying a free agent to replace?

BTW, why do they wait so long and spread out all the baseball awards? Do they actually think we’re waiting with baited breath till they get to the last winner?
MLB wants a bigger audience and some publicity after season, they should hook up with an end of season, made for tv, awards show on espn. They can hype anything for a night

Delmon Young is physically going to turn into his older brother Dmitri very soon. He’ll be too heavy to do anything but DH. Giving up anybody for him, especially Prado, would be a disaster.

Fall of George: Terdoslavich’s strong 2011 season gave the Braves reason to believe he could possibly take over at third base in a year or two — IF the development continues. That’s the reason they’re moving him back to third base in 2012, his primary position in college and in his first season in the minors before he play first base at Lynchburg last season (they had Joe Leonard at 3B).

Edward Salcedo remains a top prospect and made progress last season at Rome after the Braves moved him to 3B (he split time between SS and 3B early in the season). And the Braves also have Brandon Drury, the kid from Oregon who hit .347 w/ 23 doubles, 8 HRs and 54 RBIs in 63 games at Danville last season at age 18.

But for now, Terdo is the only one of them who’s close to the majors. Given how he played against higher-level competition in the Arizona Fall League, he might be even closer than we thought a couple months ago. If he has another big season this year in Double-A or higher, he might be considered for the job when Chipper retires. Just have to see how the guy does in 2012 at a higher level, after putting up big numbers in high-A.

If you watch baseball, you should be able to tell that Martin Prado is one of those special kind of players that make the difference in big games. He’s the kind of player that the Cardinals had in abundance that made them able to achieve the incredible feat that they pulled off. For all their talk about their scouting system, the Braves just chase numbers around have never have enough of those kinds of players with big heart. Consequently, Braves teams invariably fail when crunch time comes. Forget Martin’s last season — he’s the kind of player that’s a difference maker on a a team. Trading him would be tragic.

Same goes for JJ in my opinion — he’s had some struggles, but he’s got the rare gift of Maddox-like game smarts to go with his immense talent. Anyone who saw him in the first half of this past season should realize that. I suspect there is a racial element involved with all those who have been screaming to trade JJ for years now, while holding up the often-struggling Hanson as the Braves great hope. When you throw in the pathetic dilemma the Braves have with Chipper Jones (sure you have to pay him, but do you have to continue to bat him third, just because that’s where he thinks he belongs – show some balls management), while the media continues to ladle out the Chipper cool-aid, and the fans continue to quaff it, altogether, you have one misguided baseball team management (dont’ get me started on Fredi, and that big mistake), to go with a fan base that follows baseball with a redneck football mentality. But then this really should come as no surprise, as this part of the country is primarily Republican after all. And not much reading between the lines goes on here, in baseball, as in life.

What incompetent ownership….

We hear about the Falcons going for it in overtime in their own territory. Mike Smith’s overall play-calling is questionable; that one honestly wasn’t so bad, and at least the Falcons, from the top down, want to win.

With the Braves, it does indeed go from the grassroots level to Frank Wren, but ownership is apathetic. Wren’s an outstanding GM, and the team is galvanized and professional in its scouting, etc., but no Blank or Dimitroff work for the Braves. No, sir; the same people who absolutely butchered TBS run into one of the sleaziest networks on TV run the finances here, and the fact that Prado and Jurrjens are being shopped is absurd. They’re not set to earn THAT much, anyway (not that they haven’t earned it), and yet ownership wants to trade them———–and what about Michael Bourn? Is the team AGAIN going to rent the services of a player that it needs to keep?

Yeah, great. If they trade Prado, that means Conrad playing 3rd 50% of the games since we all know Chipper can’t play too much, $13 mil contract and all. I’d rather leave LF as is until next year when Prado can move over to 3rd permanently and the Braves can look for a LF and possible CF.

Another thing about Prado, he gets accolades all around from baseball experts. He had one off year, that happens. He would’ve been around a lot longer if Bobby Cox had not been playing favorites and trying to make Kelly Johnson happen here.

Da Mick – Hadn’t thought of it in that perspective but Prado is exactly what the Cardinals were in ‘11. Just way too versatile and clutch to let get away. Also agree on your JJ/Hanson analysis. If you’ve watched baseball any length of time, Hanson with his delivery is destined to a career full of arm injuries.

Let’s Go: Braves would probably prefer to add more offense to their bench. Wilson was outstanding defensively, but as you noted, provided almost nothing in his limited at-bats with Braves, even when he had a chance to play every day while Gonzalez was injured.

JJ should be traded this off-season. Not because of any health concerns or racial bias. Just business. The acquiring team gets him for 2 years not 1 before he is FA which will return better players/prospects than when he is 1 year away from FA. The same logic can be applied to Tommy Boy next year. They both sealed their fate when they let DLowe talk them into signing a pact with the devil.

Prado is a winner. Braves need to find a way to extend him beyond his remaining arb years.
