@wjones

AGonzalez is a free agent — Braves would not need to offer him arbitration, simply negotiate a mutually acceptable contract.

I’d guess 2 years for $3-4M total. That’s got my vote.”

He is a free agent, but he’s OUR free agent. By offering him arb, he can accept, and the Braves can sign him to a one-year contract, or he can decline and the Braves can get compensation for him. If he accepts, he’s thinking that there isn’t a lot out there and he’d better take guaranteed money. He would decline if he thinks he can get a multi-year deal somewhere. I’d say it’s a gamble worth taking for Braves. Right on the arb or non-tender for arb eligibles. I’d be surprised if Moylan were tendered a contract, since we won’t have his services all year. Who are the others—Prado, Jurrjens…who else? Is Hanson arb eligible yet? Oh yeah, Bourn. Maybe EOF? We don’t have many, IIRC.

I’d actually be surprised if Boras allowed Bourn to sign without testing the market

Willingham strikes out a lot. He is not a player that can carry a team, so if we bring him on expecting 20-25 homers and 80 RBI’s with a .260 or average and hot and cold streaks then, fine. I’d like to see us sign Jimmy Rollins. He would have a bigger impact on improving our team. I have no interest in Reyes for many reasons, but Rollins will give us a great glove, a decent switch hitter and some needed veteran leadership (sorry, but Chipper is a future HOF’er who has never been a leader).

Bourn is a very good player, and I would like to see us sign him, but not if it means overpaying for him. With Boras as his agent we may see someone overpay. Bourn is a speedster and gold glover with almost no power. He might be worth $10 million per year, but not $15 million.

Just read about the Phillies signing Jim Thome to a 1 year deal.
With exception of his last game in Cleveland where he made a symbolic start at 3B, Thome has not played defense in 4 seasons.
What does this say about the state of affairs with Ryan Howard that they would bring Thome in to cover….

Not to answer for nolie, but Rollin’s skills have been diminishing over the past 3 years. Plus for what he would cost over a guy like Gonzalez or Barmes, he is not worth the extra money. Not now anyway.

Plus, we have two pretty good SS’s that are in the pipeline, supposedly getting closer to being ready.

Brave New World

No way Bourn is worth 10 million per. Maybe 7-8.

ueeediot

@Brave new world…
The only reason we dont sign Rollins is money. I completely agree with you though. Rollins is one of those guys you make sure you extend an offer to and make sure your fans know you made a serious offer. Not like when the limp GM we have now watched Philly gather up quality pitchers without even trying to usurp them.
Same goes for trading players with perceived value for absolutely nothing.

I like the idea of trading JJ just wish the Braves could hold onto Prado. Prado can play too many different positions hard to replace that. I liked the Uggla trade but Braves sure missed Infante last year.

@Around The Horn I totally agree with you. Wren should not make a trade just to make a trade to look good.

Francorer & Escobar had good seasons and would solve our need for a SS & LF. Also, in the recent World Series, the starting shortstops were Frucal & Elvis Andrus. Elvis, Salty (C), plus two other players were part of the trade for Texiera, who last part of one season before they let him go in trade. That’s why I was glad to see the trade with Bourne, where we know he would be part of the team in 2012.

I think we should just stand pat for 2012, keep & develop our young players and go shopping for NEED for the 2013 season. Give it one more year to observe our talent.

Let the young pitchers get more seasoning on the major league level, before we try to trade Jair or Hanson. Did both rebound from injury? Does Heyward fix the hole in his swing? Does Freeman avoid the sophmore jinx? Can the hitting coach change the culture & help struggling players? Is Gonzalez capable of being his own manager or a Bobby clone? Let Chipper have his Swan Song Tour? Is Bourne the true lead off hitter we been looking for? Can Constanza speed & ability to get infield hits help us produce more runs vs the big Power Hitting LF bat? Keeping in mind that a power hitter could give us the same numbers that Uggla did most of the season with a lot of SOLO HR’s vs RBI production. Does Uggla get a better start to his season? Can Prado improve his batting average? As stated above, if Uggla (30 HR) was in LF & Prada (13 HR) was at 2B, we would be happy with the power numbers of both players. If so, should we bring Gonzo back for one more season at SS? Liberty Media has already made a $10 million DOLLARS profit by getting rid of Lowe & Kawakami! In 2012 Chipper & the remaining Lowe salary come off the books to a tune of $26 million DOLLARS!

SO THEY SHOULD JUST STAND PAT FOR ONE MORE SEASON AND GO SHOPPING FOR 2013 AT THE END OF THE SEASON…PLAYOFFS OR NOT…$36 MILLION PLUS & TRADE ASSETS…TO LAND THE POSITION OF NEED FOR 2013.

Rollins would never be identified as a team leader, benched before for not hustling and many in Philadelphia still believe he does not hustle. The team leader there is Chase Utley.

ueeediot: One more reason for signing Rollins is that it further weakens an already weakened Phillies offense.

Not surprised by the lack of interest in Willingham. Wren has said multiple times that he wants this to be a more athletic team. If we’re already using Chipper, McCann, Freeman, Uggla, and Hinske, then Wren is looking for some speed in LF and at SS.

How about Jair Jurrjens and a lesser pitching prospect such as Todd Redmond to the Boston Red Sox for OF Josh Reddick and 3B Will Middlebrooks and then flip Martin Prado to the Yankees for SS Eduardo Nunez.
2012 Lineup:
-C: Brian McCann (28)
-1B: Freddie Freeman (22)

-3B: Chipper Jones (40)
-SS: Eduardo Nunez (25)
-LF: Josh Reddick (25)
-CF: Michael Bourn (29)
-RF: Jason Heyward (22)
Bench:
-C: David Ross
-1B/OF: Eric Hinske
-OF: Jose Constanza
-IF/PH: Brooks Conrad
-OF: Matt Diaz

2013 Lineup:
-C: Brian McCann (29)
-1B: Freddie Freeman (23)
-2B: Dan Uggla (33)

ueeediot: Agree with you on Chipper. He had a better year in 2011 than I thought he would but I think 2012 will be his last year with the Braves. Chipper made the all star team this year because he was having a respectable year in a year when NL 3rd basemen were mostly having less-than-stellar years. Chipper will be a HOF’er but we will need a new 3rd baseman. I’m not sure Prado is the answer. I would love to see David Wright at the hot corner for us.

I’d certainly not trade Jurrjens or Prado for Cain alone, no way. But don’t dismiss Cain just because of age.

DOB, has there been any other prospects names that have come up? They have two that just finished up seasons in Low-A Kane County that are intriguing. 3B Cheslor Cuthbert and CF Brett Eibner. One or both plus Cain is a pretty decent haul for Jair, imo.

So far, Braves aren’t among 10 or so teams that have called to express interest in Willingham, an Alabama native (Florence) who’s made it known he’d like to play for ATL.

With ten teams interested, A’s will definitely offer arbitration. Although, no one really knows if the compensation rules will even be in play this offseason.

I might be wrong but there seems to be less talk right now about extending Bourn.

Yup, the fact that they are looking for outfielders, and perhaps one that plays center field, makes me think that they know Bourn’s price is higher than they’d like to deal with.
