DOB, just watched the first two episodes of Amercian Horror Story on Demand.

Unreal. Now I’m mad I started watching it on TV, because it’s grabbed me so much it would be one of those shows I’d fire through in a few days on DVD. Creepy doesn’t begin to describe it. I watched every episode of The Practice when it was on, so I’m a huge fan of Dillon McDermott (sp?). Strange to see him in something so “out there”.

Once again FX has shown why they are THE network. I can’t come up with one series I’ve watched on FX that I haven’t loved. Rescue Me, The Shield, Damages, Nip Tuck, Always Sunny, Justified….. all fantastic, edgy shows.

Thanks for mentioning how good it was. While we don’t see eye to eye on much music, most TV shows you’ve praised, I’ve either already been enjoying myself, or do enjoy once checking them out. There was an article in the TV Guide (or some mag my wife gets), that I read today on it that compelled me to watch it on Demand.

I’m hooked.

Did you folks see where OSWALT and LIDGE had their options declined by PHILLIE?

My take is they are damaged goods, or past their prime, and for the good of the team, the GM is cutting them loose even though he has to eat over three million in the process. Will they resign as PHILLIES for a lot less money, or somewhere else for almost as much? Interesting development.

I’d say maybe LIDGE comes back for a serious moneycut. There are a number of relief-closers coming out through FA this off-season. Personally, I’d have no interest in LIDGE going forward.

OSWALT has wanted to be a CARDINAL since before he left HOUSTON. He’s from that area of MISSISSIPPI where tradition says you’re a ST.LOUIS fan, and he wants to go home for his retirement. Just the type of contract I’m convinced is deadly for any club on a long-term basis. I’m betting the CARDS want him as a fourth starter, but may not give him an extended deal.

This sounds like a LOWE-type situation except OSWALT would be pushed into the #1 starter slot, a big difference from the BRAVES position during the off-season of 2008.

Of course, neither LIDGE nor OSWALT are not home-grown talent, and that makes it easier. i wonder what AMARO would do with CHIPPER if he were the BRAVES GM? Or what FRANK WREN would do if he were in PHILA.?

Baseball America’s Jim Callis’ Ask BA column 10/25/11:

I knew there was disparity in the number of early-round draft picks teams had, but I didn’t realize how much until a club official sent me some research his team put together. In the last six drafts, there have been a total of 1,049 selections in the first five rounds, an average of 35 per team. Because of free-agent compensation, the total choices for the clubs run the gamut from the Blue Jays (46), Padres (46), Rays (43), Diamondbacks (42) and Red Sox (42) at the top to the Cubs (28), Orioles (28), Athletics (30), Royals (30) and Yankees (30) at the bottom.

Of course, the clubs make their own decisions as to which of their free agents to offer arbitration (a requirement for receiving compensation) and which ones to sign (knowing when it will cost them a draft pick). But it’s still odd to see that San Diego and Toronto have averaged three more choices per year than Baltimore and Chicago over the last six drafts.

No word has leaked out as to whether free-agent compensation will be addressed as part of changes to the draft in the next collective bargaining agreement. Here are the alterations I would make:

1. Overhaul the rating system, which is too simplistic (as I detailed in the Feb. 3, 2009 Ask BA). Relievers in particular are overvalued, as any bullpen arm with a pulse is rated as Type A (top 20 percent in a position group) or Type B (21-40 percent) and yields some form of compensation.

2. Eliminate compensation for Type B free agents altogether. Eighteen of them produced supplemental first-round picks in the 2011 draft: Adam LaRoche, Pedro Feliciano, Octavio Dotel, John Buck, J.J. Putz, Jon Garland, Juan Uribe, Orlando Hudson, Javier Vazquez, Brad Hawpe, Kevin Gregg, Yorvit Torrealba, Jesse Crain, Joaquin Benoit, Miguel Olivo, Kevin Correia, Randy Choate and Chad Qualls. They weren’t as valuable as the draft picks their former clubs received in return.

3. Base the sandwich picks on the net number of free agents lost rather than the raw total. For instance, the Rangers saw Type A free agent Cliff Lee depart and got the Phillies’ first-rounder in return. Texas signed Type A free agent Adrian Beltre and gave up its own first-rounder to the Red Sox. That’s fine. But the Rangers also got a supplemental first-rounder for Lee despite landing as many Type A free agents as it lost.

My changes would have shaved the supplemental first round from 27 selections to four in 2011, and they’d more accurately reflect the value of what teams lost to free agency. We’ll see what happens in the new CBA, which could be unveiled in the near future.

Big Jake: maybe if the only time you’re ever on here is in the middle of the night, you wouldn’t be familiar with me I guess, but YES there are tons of Braves fans who post comments on this blog who want to see the team sold quickly and house-cleaning take place, I can more than assure that I am far from alone on this topic as it continues to be quite clear that until we get away from corporate ownership we’re going to struggle to make noise and accountability will be nonexistant. I’m not an angry man, I’m a realistic sports fan and I’m tired of watching Frank Wren hobnail teams together in an attempt to back or sneak our way into the playoffs…

Well, those “plenty” of fans who think that the Jurrjens deal was bad are complete idiots.

Seems to me that trading a shortstop who we got for a player never heard from again and who’s salary was pretty much paid by the Red Sox and who played more than 124 games only once more and never hit above .276 again (and that in a 72 game ) season for a pitcher who in three of his four complete seasons won 13 or more games and posted a sub 3.00 ERA in two of the three was a pretty damned good deal.

So would most intelligent fans.

2007: Edgar Renteria to Detroit for Jair Jurrjens and Gorkys Hernandez

2008: Tyler Flowers, Brent Lillibridge, Jon Gilmore, and Santos Rodriguez for Javier Vazquez and Boone Logan
