I keep reading that the Braves had the “worst collapse” in MLB history. Was it a big collapse? No doubt. But the worst? I’d say the Red Sox collapse in 2011 was worse given their standing as a favorite to win it all. While the Phils had a very strong regular season, their first round collapse is magnified because this was supposed to be their year. The Braves were overachievers and were having a great year until Hanson and Jurrjens went down. I doubt history will remember the Braves 2011 as the “worst collapse.” But who cares? The Phils choked in the first round, and I’m enjoying the World Series (Rangers will be champs), and looking forward to the Braves in 2012.

Braves need a hitter for left field and stick Prado back in the utility role where he is more valuable. Knowing scared Wren though he’ll just get a back up plan for LF or RF to go with Diaz. A really cheap option that won’t produce, much like most all his acquisitions in the past.

Chipper will once again be counted on to be the 1999 Chipper and it will fail …..once again. Health and his power have fallen to the floor, especially his health.

So go ahead Wren and get you a really cheap backup player and feed all the fans the same old that “Heyward will bounce back, McCann and Prado are healthy, Freeman’s swing will prevent a sophomore slump, pitching is deep (although 90% of them cannot go past six innings) blah blah blah”

You know, there actually are a few folks here who I respect and who also didn’t like the Teixeira trade (Gone Viral is one), and they mainly can make a point for degree. But, mostly, when I see some poster start ranting about that trade, I know pretty much right off the bat that they neither understand the concept of present wins value versus future potential wins value nor that present wins increase in value over time. All this to say that a Tex trade rant, half a decade later, is a pretty big flag waving in the wind, emblazoned with “I’m such a doofus!” But that’s just me, of course.

Was Lipka moved because he can’t play SS, or because we need a CF’er? — DS1

Moved to take advantage of his speed and athleticism, and because the Braves feel like they’ve got depth at shortstop now with Pastornicky, Simmons, 2011 draft pick Nick Ahmed, and, further down in minors, a 20-year-old Nicaraguan kid named Elmer Reyes.

They don’t have nearly that kind of depth at CF in the system, although they have hopes for guys like Todd Cunningham and Mycal Jones, now Lipka might really have good potential for the position.

Blah blah blah! The ones that will scream at me for my rants are the same ones that’ll scream and shout when Wrens moves fall flat once again when the season is in motion. You know I’m right. This team and organization have become so frustrating for me as a fan the last few years that I have become a ranter regarding my beloved Braves. It is obvious I do not like the current GM, manager and am not a fan of how so many of my fellow Braves fans are so passive about the stubbornness and failure of our team nowadays. You guys like being tugged and pulled into believing every year only to watch them agonize you at the end? I am personally sick of it. No reason this team with the talent can’t compete with Philly or the Cardinals of the league. Absolutely none. No excuses.

I wonder where Nick Ahmed starts next year. I’d guess Rome, but I could see them pushing him to Lynchburg. Reyes is a good example of the Braves finding prospects in countries that aren’t as popular for Baseball like Nicaragua. Big presence in Panama – as many know.

Daughter’s home today….finally. Gotta’ take better care of herself if she wants to live to see that future Baseball HOF’er she just had grow up.

And personally nothing worse in the occlusion department internally…….thank god! This is an annual check for me now, so all’s well that ends well I guess.

To press on:

SS TYLER PASTORNICKY [.365 BA - 104 AB] will be 22 next season, and looks to have a real shot as back-up to A-GON in the spring. He has proven out to this point, but has little track record with the BRAVES so keep your fingers crossed. I really don’t put any stock in what he did in the TORONTO system. So far, he’s passed every test as a BRAVE. Interestingly, his fielding percentage has waned as a BRAVE even as his bat has waxed hotter and hotter for ATLANTA.

22 year-old SS AL SIMMONS [.311 BA] has emerged as a legitimate prospect in the BRAVES system. Most say he’s offensively challenged, but a steadily rising BA in A+ all year long tells me he can handle the stick adequately at least, and he can learn to adapt to pitching. A strong arm seems to be his best asset. Somehow, I don’t envision him being PASTORNICKY’s caddy in ATLANTA. The guy’s got skill and determination. I’m thinking he may just be the one as an A-BRAVE for a decade. This year in MISSISSIPPI will pretty much tell us what he can do. Most guys emerge from A-ball as suspects. AA usually tells the truth about their abilities. I am very optomistic about our 2nd round pick from 2010.

Ditto JOE TERDOSLAVICH [.286 BA -age 23] the other half of LYNCHBURG’s thunder and lightning dynamic duo last season. JOE’s tearing up the pitching this fall in ‘ZONA, and can play either 3rd or 1st. I like his chances of being CHIPPER’s understudy in 2013 if JONES vests in the option year, or possibly supplanting PRADO in 2014.

Catcher CHRISTIAN BETHANCOURT [.289 combined BA ROME/LYNCHBURG] was floundering in low A-ball in 2010 [.251 BA]. A promo to A+ seems to have kick-started his career however. I could see BETHANCOURT being in ATLANTA to supplant ROSS by 2014. If he can climb the ability mountain before him, he might be the heir-apparant to McCANN in three years. His stick is not BRIAN’s however, and will never be in my opinion.

REYES only hit .177 in ROME after his promo from DANVILLE.
AHMED hit .262 in DANVILLE.

The organization can’t send REYES on up the line with that result, and being on the bench is no good. REYES and AHMED both have to play to improve, or to wash-out. Maybe AHMED does go to LYNCHBURG to replace SIMMONS.

Drew Sutton as the backup infielder? Don’t know much about him, but he hit OK last year.

DS1

October 25th, 2011

Lowe was the best choice when signed. And in 2009, he was an anchor for the staff. If you recall how badly our rotation stunk in 2008, you’ll know why he dealt Flowers for Vazquez, signed KK and Lowe. We truly needed them. We didn’t know for sure if Huddy would be effective again. Hanson was still in the minors, and JJ had only pitched 1 year.

Hard to blame a guy for fixing the problem. Everybody forgets what it was like in 2008 with starters like Buddy Carlyle, Jorge Campillo, James Parr and JoJo Reyes taking up a lot of starts. Tim Hudson and Mike Hampton were hurt. And JJ was the only decent pitcher that lasted the whole season.

And Wren has a budget. He can’t NOT go cheap. Most of his salary budget is used up. Ownership tells him what he can spend, and that’s what he works with.

What’s not so hard to understand about that?

Positives: Jurrjens, Ross, Hinske, Glaus (carried this team a year and a half ago for over a month) Uggla (where would we be in 2011 without him), and he has constructed a good pen for several years in a row now.

But I guess if he doesn’t hit 1.000 on trades and FA acquisitions, he will be a failure to many!
