Brave New World
October 25th, 20117:22 pm
I keep reading that the Braves had the “worst collapse” in MLB history. Was it a big collapse? No doubt. But the worst? I’d say the Red Sox collapse in 2011 was worse given their standing as a favorite to win it all. While the Phils had a very strong regular season, their first round collapse is magnified because this was supposed to be their year. The Braves were overachievers and were having a great year until Hanson and Jurrjens went down. I doubt history will remember the Braves 2011 as the “worst collapse.” But who cares? The Phils choked in the first round, and I’m enjoying the World Series (Rangers will be champs), and looking forward to the Braves in 2012.
October 25th, 20117:25 pm
Damn, DS1!! Youze always getting into it with bloggers ain’t cha?
October 25th, 20117:30 pm
Wayne, time to ditch Da Sensitive 1 for new moniker. I mean really.
October 25th, 20117:41 pm
Youze always getting into it with bloggers ain’t cha? @Trey
consider who he was getting into it with tonight
DS1 = Da Sarcastic 1
October 25th, 20117:44 pm
BraveFaninBC, yeah. I know.I was just kidding with him.
October 25th, 20117:46 pm
Damn, DS1!! Youze always getting into it with bloggers ain’t cha? — Trey
Wayne doesn’t get into it with bloggers, Trey, just a-holes. Of course, that’s just one man’s opinion.
October 25th, 20117:48 pm
Any updates on my nolieeee polie?
Still thinking about you. Get well soon, you, me and our eee’s have a big year coming up campaigning for our teen teen.
October 25th, 20117:49 pm
Braves need a hitter for left field and stick Prado back in the utility role where he is more valuable. Knowing scared Wren though he’ll just get a back up plan for LF or RF to go with Diaz. A really cheap option that won’t produce, much like most all his acquisitions in the past.
Chipper will once again be counted on to be the 1999 Chipper and it will fail …..once again. Health and his power have fallen to the floor, especially his health.
So go ahead Wren and get you a really cheap backup player and feed all the fans the same old that “Heyward will bounce back, McCann and Prado are healthy, Freeman’s swing will prevent a sophomore slump, pitching is deep (although 90% of them cannot go past six innings) blah blah blah”
October 25th, 20117:51 pm
You know, there actually are a few folks here who I respect and who also didn’t like the Teixeira trade (Gone Viral is one), and they mainly can make a point for degree. But, mostly, when I see some poster start ranting about that trade, I know pretty much right off the bat that they neither understand the concept of present wins value versus future potential wins value nor that present wins increase in value over time. All this to say that a Tex trade rant, half a decade later, is a pretty big flag waving in the wind, emblazoned with “I’m such a doofus!” But that’s just me, of course.
October 25th, 20117:52 pm
KEEP NATE? Have y’all gone nuts?
October 25th, 20117:53 pm
Tom O’Hawke, I know that. I was just kidding with him.
We’ll have to wait for his nephew, Big Jake, to get any updates, Soph. He sometimes comes on very late at night.
The only other one that might know, that has ties to the blog, is Moby Grape/Big’un. But he’s in Italy, I believe. Although, I guess they have the internet there, too.
October 25th, 20117:54 pm
BTW The new George Pelecanos book THE CUT is great.
October 25th, 20117:55 pm
I realize that, Trey. When I was catching up on the blog, I was thinking along the same lines as what you posted. You beat me to it.
October 25th, 20117:57 pm
Yeah, I hope he realizes I was kidding and not to take it seriously, Tom.
McFann O O o
Murph He won last year’s AJC Blog MMA Tournament.
October 25th, 20118:00 pm
I’m absolutely sure he won’t take it seriously, Trey. He’ll probably appreciate it.
I am also wishing the very best for nolies health.
October 25th, 20118:04 pm
Was Lipka moved because he can’t play SS, or because we need a CF’er? — DS1
Moved to take advantage of his speed and athleticism, and because the Braves feel like they’ve got depth at shortstop now with Pastornicky, Simmons, 2011 draft pick Nick Ahmed, and, further down in minors, a 20-year-old Nicaraguan kid named Elmer Reyes.
They don’t have nearly that kind of depth at CF in the system, although they have hopes for guys like Todd Cunningham and Mycal Jones, now Lipka might really have good potential for the position.
October 25th, 20118:08 pm
Blah blah blah! The ones that will scream at me for my rants are the same ones that’ll scream and shout when Wrens moves fall flat once again when the season is in motion. You know I’m right. This team and organization have become so frustrating for me as a fan the last few years that I have become a ranter regarding my beloved Braves. It is obvious I do not like the current GM, manager and am not a fan of how so many of my fellow Braves fans are so passive about the stubbornness and failure of our team nowadays. You guys like being tugged and pulled into believing every year only to watch them agonize you at the end? I am personally sick of it. No reason this team with the talent can’t compete with Philly or the Cardinals of the league. Absolutely none. No excuses.
October 25th, 20118:15 pm
you are too obnoxious for most of us to care what you think
October 25th, 20118:23 pm
Guess everyone left so I will also. Peanut needs his walk so outta here. Have a good one or two tonight y’all.
October 25th, 20118:24 pm
BravesfaninBC, obvious I am not wanted here, so my obnoxious ass will leave. I do not fit in with this crowd. Nothing I say is being taken seriously and that is not fair. DS1 was a jerk to me saying my post was not worthy of being read. I then retaliated and get sucker punched for that by everybody. All I wanted was to find a place to vent my opinions on my team with fellow fans hoping to find at least one other that share my opinions and I get sucker punched for it. Totally unfair.
I can take a hint.
October 25th, 20118:32 pm
Secret Agent, at least one person did agree with your post, fonz. Mission accomplished.
Oh, and not calling fellow Braves fans “fat losers” could help you fitting in around here.
October 25th, 20118:38 pm
Secret Agent, I have to admit that I didn’t really read what was going on between you and DS1, so I have no qualms with you.
October 25th, 20118:39 pm
Damn, I feel kinda bad for Secret Agent.
Go back to page 5 and take a look…
October 25th, 20118:41 pm
Secret Agent isn’t Dentz. Or at least, if it is, he’s masking his usual crud well.
All this to say that a Tex trade rant, half a decade later, is….
Can’t believe that was 4+ years ago. Time goes fast.
October 25th, 20118:44 pm
The guy’s an a-hole, Trey, and just putting that ridiculous act on.
If you start falling for that idiot’s crapola, I’ll… I’ll… uh… something!
October 25th, 20118:45 pm
Trey, I think some people are just lonely. Ones that talk a big game like secret agent are really the ones that are lonely or whatever. His/her last post kinda proved that to me.
October 25th, 20118:55 pm
Braves feel like they’ve got depth at shortstop now with Pastornicky, Simmons, 2011 draft pick Nick Ahmed, and, further down in minors, a 20-year-old Nicaraguan kid named Elmer Reyes.
They don’t have nearly that kind of depth at CF in the system, although they have hopes for Todd Cunningham and now Lipka.
I wonder where Nick Ahmed starts next year. I’d guess Rome, but I could see them pushing him to Lynchburg. Reyes is a good example of the Braves finding prospects in countries that aren’t as popular for Baseball like Nicaragua. Big presence in Panama – as many know.
October 25th, 20119:01 pm
Daughter’s home today….finally. Gotta’ take better care of herself if she wants to live to see that future Baseball HOF’er she just had grow up.
And personally nothing worse in the occlusion department internally…….thank god! This is an annual check for me now, so all’s well that ends well I guess.
To press on:
SS TYLER PASTORNICKY [.365 BA - 104 AB] will be 22 next season, and looks to have a real shot as back-up to A-GON in the spring. He has proven out to this point, but has little track record with the BRAVES so keep your fingers crossed. I really don’t put any stock in what he did in the TORONTO system. So far, he’s passed every test as a BRAVE. Interestingly, his fielding percentage has waned as a BRAVE even as his bat has waxed hotter and hotter for ATLANTA.
22 year-old SS AL SIMMONS [.311 BA] has emerged as a legitimate prospect in the BRAVES system. Most say he’s offensively challenged, but a steadily rising BA in A+ all year long tells me he can handle the stick adequately at least, and he can learn to adapt to pitching. A strong arm seems to be his best asset. Somehow, I don’t envision him being PASTORNICKY’s caddy in ATLANTA. The guy’s got skill and determination. I’m thinking he may just be the one as an A-BRAVE for a decade. This year in MISSISSIPPI will pretty much tell us what he can do. Most guys emerge from A-ball as suspects. AA usually tells the truth about their abilities. I am very optomistic about our 2nd round pick from 2010.
Ditto JOE TERDOSLAVICH [.286 BA -age 23] the other half of LYNCHBURG’s thunder and lightning dynamic duo last season. JOE’s tearing up the pitching this fall in ‘ZONA, and can play either 3rd or 1st. I like his chances of being CHIPPER’s understudy in 2013 if JONES vests in the option year, or possibly supplanting PRADO in 2014.
Catcher CHRISTIAN BETHANCOURT [.289 combined BA ROME/LYNCHBURG] was floundering in low A-ball in 2010 [.251 BA]. A promo to A+ seems to have kick-started his career however. I could see BETHANCOURT being in ATLANTA to supplant ROSS by 2014. If he can climb the ability mountain before him, he might be the heir-apparant to McCANN in three years. His stick is not BRIAN’s however, and will never be in my opinion.
October 25th, 20119:03 pm
Prediction: Pretty soon it’ll be Feb. again and that numbnut FW will have done absolutely nothing to improve the team. But we will have a new hitting coach.
October 25th, 20119:11 pm
Damn FELIX, you really are a genius. Let’s nick-name you CAPTAIN OBVIOUS.
October 25th, 20119:13 pm
I read the Big Jake account on his uncle nolie…
Those are terribly serious issues he is having, obviously, and my thoughts are with him. He’s getting a fairly decent prayer for him a bit later when i hit the hay…
I’ve only been around here since March, but i came to have great respect for nolie 3 or 4 months ago now…he is a very decent and good man by all indications and i hate to hear of his struggles. It really is a bummer but i’m optimistic for him.
October 25th, 20119:18 pm
REYES only hit .177 in ROME after his promo from DANVILLE.
AHMED hit .262 in DANVILLE.
The organization can’t send REYES on up the line with that result, and being on the bench is no good. REYES and AHMED both have to play to improve, or to wash-out. Maybe AHMED does go to LYNCHBURG to replace SIMMONS.
October 25th, 20119:19 pm
cab, should I read his comments? I’m not really sure if I want to, if they’re that bad.
October 25th, 20119:20 pm
Big Jake, if you get on tonight, let us know Nolie’s status, if he is improving.
October 25th, 20119:22 pm
Secret Agent, at least one person did agree with your post, fonz. Mission accomplished. — TnBrian
Now he has a 3rd, Brian, – Felix.
What the hell was he complaining about?
You da’ man. Keep swimming bro, and I’ll see you further upstream.
October 25th, 20119:23 pm
You should skim them- you won’t feel bad for him anymore…
October 25th, 20119:24 pm
Normally, I am pretty insensitive to folks and their feelings cab, but if I don’t see the whole thing and see someone as an “outcast”, I do show a little bit of pity. Maybe I’ll read ‘em.
October 25th, 20119:27 pm
Understandable. But after going back and looking, don’t think he deserves it.
October 25th, 20119:28 pm
DH TODD CUNNINGHAM [.324 BA] 0-5, 2 SO.
All international leagues, late games.
October 25th, 20119:30 pm
October 25th, 20119:33 pm
Thanks for all of the info, richbrave.
Have a good night.
October 25th, 20119:34 pm
Trey, thanks bro. You don’t seem like a bully. Just because I might have a different view or express it differently doesn’t mean I should get picked on. Majority rules and I am in the minority. I won’t bother the gifted ones with my unwanted presence. It is nothing new.
October 25th, 20119:37 pm
October 25th, 20119:38 pm
Efrim Can’t believe that was 4+ years ago. Time goes fast.
Whoa. Yeah, that’s wild…hard to believe…
October 25th, 20119:40 pm
You are not allowed to complain about how long ago something was until you are at least legal to drink…
October 25th, 20119:50 pm
time to engage the scroll button again…………..
October 25th, 20119:52 pm
DS1, shutup! You’re stupid!
October 25th, 20119:53 pm
I am sorry folks. I saw a couple of bloggers beating a dead horse about what a bad GM FW is, so I just started pushing their buttons.
Damn little devil on my left shoulder made me do it!
(Trey, I saw the humor in your comments earlier.)
How’s the gang tonight? I sure hope we hear some good news about nolie tonight. Dude has to be getting better, with all the prayers sent up for him.
October 25th, 20119:54 pm
cabravesfan You are not allowed to complain about how long ago something was until you are at least legal to drink…
Yeah, well, that won’t be much longer…
October 25th, 20119:56 pm
Serious comment. If you want to continue with the line that FW is a bad GM, you are not going to get any leverage from the more stable bloggers. You will though seek out others that feel the same. Folks that really don’t know shyt about baseball’s inner workings or the Braves FO. Trying to be serious with you here, but if you continue with your harsh comments about FW, I will be forced to scroll on past.
That’s MY right to do here.
October 25th, 20119:58 pm
Listen to cab. She is wise for her years!
Where were you and VJ earlier when I needed a tutor?
October 25th, 20119:59 pm
VJ is working and I was…not reading the blog
nolie famous around here I take it. What is wrong with him?
Nice of you to compile a list of well wishes for nolie.
I think I know the truth though. I think he heard that I was going to be in the Fort Myers area in early December, so he is hiding from me so he won’t have to see me!
October 25th, 201110:01 pm
nolie is a staple around here. An old catcher and scout. Lots of baseball knowledge. He’s in the hospital with some pretty tough ailments.
He’d disagree with your point that FW is a bad GM. Sorry.
I suspect it’s at least a few years…
October 25th, 201110:05 pm
Let’s talk potential trade/FA possibilities.
Chase Headley of SD? Learned how to take a walk in 2011. Don’t know much about his D, but he plays third and LF. Kinda like Prado, but takes a few walks.
Drew Sutton as the backup infielder? Don’t know much about him, but he hit OK last year.
Doumit will probably need too much money.
Andruw: would he fit in as a backup? Could he handle it? Could WE handle it?
Would you take a flier on DeRosa?
October 25th, 201110:09 pm
DS1, well I hope he gets better. I don’t care who disagrees with me, Wrens trades/signings have flammed out more than anything.
I think I know the truth though. I think he heard that I was going to be in the Fort Myers area in early December, so he is hiding from me so he won’t have to see me! — DS1
Can you blame him?
October 25th, 201110:10 pm
so, what do you guys think about that Teixeira trade?
October 25th, 201110:12 pm
Thanks for getting back to me on Lipka. Sounds like he still has some skills that might work out. And this Cunningham kid also sounds like a possibility.
As for Terdoslavich, he has GOT to make the team eventually, with a name like that. I am still hurt that Riann Spanjer-Furstenberg didn’t cut the mustard………….
Yeah, this is true…
Nah, not as many as you might think—my immaturity keeps my secret…a secret…
October 25th, 201110:13 pm
Not in the least!
Andruw? Hell no. DeRosa is injured seemingly all the time. No thanks. Headley? Don’t know much about him, but we need an everyday left fielder who could preferably hits right handed. Of course Wren will go the cheap route unless he can somehow trade Lowe , one of his huge mistakes, which will be extremely difficult.
October 25th, 201110:16 pm
McFann has everybody fooled. She is actually a he, and a fellow inmate here at Leavenworth with me. “SHE” is just 3-4 cells down from me. She’s in for torching an entire rain forest, I hear.
And I think “SHE” is about 45 years old. A young buck four shore!
October 25th, 201110:28 pm
Lowe was the best choice when signed. And in 2009, he was an anchor for the staff. If you recall how badly our rotation stunk in 2008, you’ll know why he dealt Flowers for Vazquez, signed KK and Lowe. We truly needed them. We didn’t know for sure if Huddy would be effective again. Hanson was still in the minors, and JJ had only pitched 1 year.
Hard to blame a guy for fixing the problem. Everybody forgets what it was like in 2008 with starters like Buddy Carlyle, Jorge Campillo, James Parr and JoJo Reyes taking up a lot of starts. Tim Hudson and Mike Hampton were hurt. And JJ was the only decent pitcher that lasted the whole season.
And Wren has a budget. He can’t NOT go cheap. Most of his salary budget is used up. Ownership tells him what he can spend, and that’s what he works with.
What’s not so hard to understand about that?
Positives: Jurrjens, Ross, Hinske, Glaus (carried this team a year and a half ago for over a month) Uggla (where would we be in 2011 without him), and he has constructed a good pen for several years in a row now.
But I guess if he doesn’t hit 1.000 on trades and FA acquisitions, he will be a failure to many!
The A Bomb - OUTCHOKED ® TWICE!
Just passing by in the offseason. Sorry to hear about Nolie. Prayers.
October 25th, 201110:40 pm
Thanks for the Tom Verducci link on yesterday’s LaRussa mess. Very interesting read. It’s very similar to the one Poz wrote after the 21 inning game against the Mets.
Both are LaRussa over-management masterpieces. The latter game, of course, was the one which featured Braves legend Joe Mather in a pitching role.
October 25th, 201110:41 pm
Ah, DANG!! Cover blown…busted!…time for a new IP address and moniker!…
October 25th, 201110:42 pm
It’s an incredibly helpless feeling, worrying about nolie, and not being able to know what’s going on – you know?
I noticed a person or two wondering what hospital he was in. Even with that knowledge, what do you do? Call patient information and ask about the condition of “nolie”?
October 25th, 201110:44 pm
Wait…you mean “nolie” isn’t his real name??
October 25th, 201110:45 pm
Amen! I’m sure Big Jake will let us know as much as nolie wants to be known. Gotta respect his privacy too.
But helpless is the feeling four shore.
Sorry, but you needed to be outed!!
I know, right? Never been in a situation like this, and I don’t like it…
Every morning now when I come on the Blog, I do a search for “nolie” along with my “Mc” and “Mac” scans…Get well soon, buddy!!
nolie I think refers to the Seminoles………… I think.
October 25th, 201110:46 pm
DS1 Gotta respect his privacy too.
Very, very true.
Sure, but I never thought you’d be the one…
McFann O O o Get Well Soon, Nolie!!
October 25th, 201110:47 pm
I did it for BMac…
That would be the logical guess
October 25th, 201110:48 pm
Call patient information and ask about the condition of “nolie”?
I’d ask for some information on a former catcher, horse breeding, mental health professional, bad ass, you know the guy I talking about, how’s he doing?
October 25th, 201110:49 pm
Nolie’s one of a kind, that’s for sure.
cab, it may be and it may not be. It could be just a name that he goes by and may not be his birth name.
October 25th, 201110:51 pm
I think DS1 is correct- “nolie” is an homage to his beloved Seminoles.
You call and ask for nolieeeee polie. 5 eeeee’s, all lowercase. They’ll find him.
or DS1 may be correct that it is just used in reference to Seminoles.
October 25th, 201110:52 pm
That might work, Bat.
You’ve always got those wheels turning.
I think so, too, cab.
October 25th, 201110:55 pm
I’m glad keyboard Bat is back but once in a blue moon I do miss the unique posts of smartphone Bat.
Listening to my guy Matt Barkley on Dan Patrick from this morning
October 25th, 201110:56 pm
I do a search for “nolie” along with my “Mc” and “Mac” scans _ McFann
That’s why I call McCann, Heap, then I can take a shot, yet avoid those searches and the beat down that follows.
October 25th, 201111:00 pm
Well, thanks, I’m sure Blunderberry Bat will be around from time to time.
I’m sure Big Jake is giving Nolie the well wishes folks are giving him on the blog and I am sure he will be happy to read them when he gets back in action.
October 25th, 201111:01 pm
Guess I’ll had “Heap” to that list, as well…
Jaime Garcia scares me a bit for tomorrow nights’ game. He’s been bad during the post season. He might be due.
Sure hope not.
October 25th, 201111:03 pm
OK, well, time to turn in…hope there will be some good news about nolie when I come back in the morning!
DS1, I’m just ready for the World Series to end. I’m not interested in either team. Plus, it’s time for the off season trades. Hopefully we can get some better players this off season.
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
