Looks like Braves will take it close to the deadline (Monday midnight) before announcing whether they’re picking up Hinske’s $1.5 mill option. And McLouth’s, too, though we assume that’s a mere formality since they surely aren’t going to exercise the $10.65 mill. Why wait to annnounce that one tomorrow? Not sure, but sometimes they have reasons, though in this case I can’t see any way there would be a trade possibility, etc.
Fact that Braves CF McLouth was among 148 players who became free agents Sunday means $10.65 mill option was already officially declined, as everyone knew it would be. Gets $1.25 mill buyout.
In past 2 seasons, McLouth hit .210 with 10 HR, .322 OBP, .328 slugging (.650 OPS), 40 RBI in 522 AB. Yikes….

rich,Matt Diaz is under contract for this year and would have to be paid. Man, I looked at the list of free agent SS and not much there besides Reyes,Rollins. Wonder if Braves might consider going cheaper route and sign Wilson back? Hope Pastornicky gets ready in a hurry.
Perhaps a bit less as the Pirates sent some amount of cash in the deal and the Braves “average the cost” of the contract.
Though, now that I go look to find details on this I’m finding something very different than I initially thought.
The AP report: “The NL wild card-leading Braves acquired Diaz for a player to be named and cash considerations.”
Bill Brink of the Pitt Gazette: “The Pirates traded outfielder Matt Diaz to the Atlanta Braves Wednesday for a player to be named later or cash.”
AJC/DOB: “The Braves re-acquired the popular outfielder from Pittsburgh on Wednesday in a trade for a player to be named. The Pirates also gave the Braves an undisclosed amount of cash to cover a portion of Diaz’s $2 million salary in 2012.”
I looked at the list of free agent SS and not much there…
CB, I think it is a given they are going the cheaper route. I suppose their meeting could conclude that Pastornicky needs another full season in the minors. But, either way that limits the quality of player the team could target. 2 year deals are more enticing to a player than a 1 year deal. And the players almost certainly know Pastornicky is there waiting to limit their playing time. So the team would have to find a guy willing to take a bench roll on a short term deal. That’s a short list of not so inspiring players.
tiger297 and I were surmising that the BRAVES this season were not seeing as many pitches as the CARDS and RANGERS were in the series. So I looked up their pitches per plate appearance. I found UGGLA’s especially noteworthy.
After the player’s name is their pitches per plate appearance for 2011, then 2010, and cumulative for their ML career. All except FREEMAN of course. I used the CARDINALS to compare.
The league average appeared to be 3.82 per PA although the number jumped around a bit from player profile to player profile. That number was most consistant.
I was struck more by the individual results of the BRAVES personnel themselves than I was by the comparative figures. In several cases for the BRAVES, the numbers declined significantly from ‘10 to ‘11. See JONES, UGGLA, PRADO, and HEYWARD specifically

Lew, we got it pretty bad down here. It was wet, heavy snow too. And with all of the leaves still on the trees and the time of the year, tons of trees came down. I think it ended up being only around 6-8 inches – but CT isn’t used to snow that early. We got lucky and didn’t lose power, but many others did.
Efrim – We don’t even have leaves on the trees anymore. We were pretty much at the northern edge of the storm (and a bit west). Burlington, which is about an hour northwest of us had one tenth of an inch of snow.
Need to call my college roommate down in Hartford, though and see how he did.
Leyland is the last of the managers I suppose. I always watched the game with the point of view that Leyland, Cox and LaRussa were the “big” managers and most all else were junior level. It’ll be along time before some one comes up to the status/stature of LaRussa and Cox. Those two had so many years in the game and such sustained success.
Glad to hear you escaped the wet snow madness, Lew.
I lived in Chicago for 3 years and had my fair share of snow, but we never got the wet nasty stuff that you guys get… it was always dry, sandy snow.
The only thing I miss about the snow was the snow blowing… we had a super long driveway and it was an hour outside in the peace and quiet with the mini-Murphs. There’s something fun about starting with a foot of snow on the ground and cutting a path, making it nice and neat, and filling your neighbor’s yard with snow.
“coming off a down year”…?…more like coming off an injury that affected his play during the last several weeks, and from which any reasonable person would wxpect him to rebound.
His numbers at the end of the season were below his usual average. Whether or not it was based on an injury, it was worse than his career averages – hence, down year. I think McCann will bounce back and put up his usual numbers if not better. I’d love for the Braves to lokc him up so he’s our catcher over the next five or six seasons.
I won’t be surprised if Braves 1B coach Terry Pendleton (former Cardinals stud) becomes StL managerial candidate.
Candidate. I could see that. I wonder if he’d be interested in taking the job if offered. And if so, who would replace him as 1B coach. I’d imagine that would be an internal promotion rather than scouring the major leagues.
TLR is retiring huh great manager have alot of respect for what he has done. But this is a question will the braves try to get more bullpen help and give the young guys some rest or try to get a power bat via trade or FA. Also CC is a FA now but only the know what they want. Man the next couple of years are going to be great!!! Don’t give up on braves country just yet.we will win a world in the next 4 years!!!
Efrimit was worse than his career averages – hence, down year.
Yes, but until the injury his number were pretty normal (except maybe the Doubles…they were pretty much down all year). He was batting .310 when he went on the DL, so one has to think that the 40-point drop in AVG had SOMETHING to do with the stupid friggin’ injury…
Glad nolie had a good day yesterday! By saying “ew” to cab about Orlando Bloom the other night, I’m thinking that I’ve kept Stanly and the doghouse company in his absence…
Actually, Mac’s numbers were pretty much in line with his career averages. He was a bit lower in Batting Average and RBI, but we keep hearing of their insignificance.
Dude might well still win the Silver Slugger – attributable to the fact he was having a career year prior to his injury and even a terrible September couldn’t negate that.
dannyboy – for 2012, bullpen includes big three + Martinez, Valvaro, Medlen, possibley Lowe, and probably at least one of the youn’uns (Vizciano is most likely), plus others will be given a chance in Spring. If we still need someone, it will likely me a middle-inning fill-in or LH situational. I don’t see the bullpen as our greatest problem nest year. Could likely be a real strength for Braves.
Please don’t attack me over this one but wonder if Braves and McCann might work out a long term contract where the money is more back loaded? He is scheduled for 8.5 million this year and 12 next year. With Chipper’s salary likely and Lowe for sure coming off next year maybe something they might look at together.
Another former BRAVE’s player become manager retires. First GASTON, then TORRE, and now LaRUSSA. COX of course played for the STANKEES, here in RICHMOND in the mid-fifties.
Please don’t attack me over this one but wonder if Braves and McCann might work out a long term contract where the money is more back loaded?
I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. Although I don’t think they’d tear up the current deal and 2012’s 8.5 million. I do think they will work something out for 2013-2016/2017. But that may not happen until after next season.
His RBI and Doubles were down, too, but they’d sorta…been doing that the last couple years…but yeah, you take away at least September, and he had a dang good year!…
The last few weeks are clouding everyone’s minds!!…
Efrim, agreed not likely to happen on 2012 but with our payroll restrictions was hoping they might. One other way might be to go with youth in bullpen and not bring Moylan back or signing any other experienced relievers.
CB – I don’t really expect Maylan back, unless they can sign him on the cheap. They like experience, but I like the bang for the buck they would get with the young guys. If Lowe’s still around, he would add years of expeience to bullpen. Not “optimal”, but he may be untradable, and I damn sure don’t want to see him back as a trarter.
I hate to even bring it up….but has anyone seen Shaun lately? Did we finally run him off? Is he OK? He sure got tiresome sometimes, but I hope nothing bad has happened to him.
I’m sure Shaun will be back when Wren starts making some moves… he won’t be able to resist comparing whatever new guy the team gets to Heyward while explaining ad nauseum how the new guy should be taking PA’s away from Prado and not JHey.
CB – I don’t disagree at all about Lowe, but I don’t think Wren will eat the entire $15M, and I’s surely rather see him in the bullpen than back as a starter every 5 days.Of course, he could always Kawakomie him, but it wsould be at twice the price. I’m thinking someone will take on about $5M of his contract, especially if he showes ANYTHING in the Spring. Eating $10M would suck, but we could do something with the $5M.
Efrim, I wouldn’t mind seeing us bring Sizemore to play LF next year.. the problem is… he’s one of those guys that will probably come at a high price tag with a lot of injury concerns attached to him.
Transplant – They will get an outfielder that can p[lay corners – they won’t trade Prado (necessitating not only a LFer, but someone who can play third, too) and they won’t get a full timer and put Martin back to utility status. Maybe NEXT winter, but not this year.
Lew, I just think if we get through this offseason without a significant addition to the outfield, more than likely this will go down as an unproductive offseason.
AT, I agree… not looking for anything big to happen this offseason.
If the team could trade Lowe plus $10mil and sign Andruw I’d be a happy guy. They’ll need to get someone capable of playing SS everyday but I’m really hoping they actually let Pastornicky compete for the starting job in ST.
Transplant – Don’t see why it should. Prado missed time and had bad mechanics afterward as a direct result of a serious injury – no reason whatsoever to think he won’t come back to .300, .350, .450 like he hit three consecutive years prior to his injured leg. And as for the concerns about his lack of power at a power position – what would it matter if your LFer hits 14 HR and your 2B 35, or vice versa?
Wren wants someone who can play left when Prado is moved to third and to play right when (IF) Heyward continues to falter. At no time has he mentioned full time LF as a position he needs to fill – not to mention that payroll is up against it’s limits this year and will be less constrictive next winter.
Murph – Again, if they were looking for a RH hitting platoon partner, Andruw would be a good possibility. However, he doesn’t hit RH pitching all that well and he would need to hit against RH AND LH pitching if playing left when Prado was at third and NOT just platooning with Heyward. .

“coming off a down year”…?…
His numbers at the end of the season were below his usual average. Whether or not it was based on an injury, it was worse than his career averages – hence, down year. I think McCann will bounce back and put up his usual numbers if not better. I’d love for the Braves to lokc him up so he’s our catcher over the next five or six seasons.

Efrim it was worse than his career averages – hence, down year.
Yes, but until the injury his number were pretty normal (except maybe the Doubles…they were pretty much down all year). He was batting .310 when he went on the DL, so one has to think that the 40-point drop in AVG had SOMETHING to do with the stupid friggin’ injury…

I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. Although I don’t think they’d tear up the current deal and 2012’s 8.5 million. I do think they will work something out for 2013-2016/2017. But that may not happen until after next season.

Transplant – They will get an outfielder that can p[lay corners – they won’t trade Prado (necessitating not only a LFer, but someone who can play third, too) and they won’t get a full timer and put Martin back to utility status. Maybe NEXT winter, but not this year.

Another decent bullpen arm wouldn’t hurt either.
Lew

However, he doesn’t hit RH pitching all that well and he would need to hit against RH AND LH pitching if playing left when Prado was at third and NOT just platooning with Heyward. .
